In a blog post announcing the sale, Spindle said:

We’ve spent the past two and a half years building a product that helps you answer the question: “What’s happening nearby right now?” Every time we’ve experimented and looked beyond local discovery, we’ve been amazed by the breadth and quality of content shared on Twitter. By joining forces with Twitter, we can do so much more to help you find interesting, timely, and useful information about what’s happening around you.

The Spindle team will be relocating and joining the Twitter team in San Francisco. As part of this change, we’ll be sunsetting the Spindle service today to focus on these new and exciting opportunities.

To our users, friends, families, investors, advisors, and everyone else: thank you for your support. It’s been an incredible journey and we couldn’t have gotten here without you.

Bloomberg reported that Vodafone told Kabel Deutschland this week that it would be willing to pay 85 euros a share compared with its initial offer of 80 euros to 82 euros for the German company.

Vodafone is said to be studying Kabel Duetschland’s books before making an official offer, Bloomberg said.

Liberty Global, which owns Unity Media, Germany’s second biggest cable operator, made an 85 euro a share offer days after the British mobile company said it was in talks about a deal.

Vodafone’s revised offer matches the Liberty Global bid valuing Kabel Deutschland at 7.5 billion euros ($10.04 billion).

Following a backlash from subscribers, MTN has brought back unlimited internet access to BlackBerry users.

In February, MTN told its BlackBerry subscribers that the BlackBerry Internet Service from MTN would be capped at 200 megabytes and was to be referred to as BlackBerry Absolute for R59 a month.

It was the out-of-bundle rate of 65c a megabyte, which applied when the 200MB limit was reached, that infuriated subscribers, who threatened to move to Vodacom or Cell C.

MTN claimed the plan was to make the network more efficient.

However, this week, MTN subscribers received an SMS that read:

“Yello! MTN has brought back your unlimited service on BlackBerry Absolute. Your service will not be capped to 200MB. Continue to enjoy a world-class experience with MTN on your BlackBerry.”

Skype announced Video Messaging in February, enabling users to the service to record a video and send it to friends. Skype boasts that the feature is completely free to use, and that Video Messages can be sent even when the recipient is offline.

Skype stated on its blog,

“You can now record and share a personal video message, even when your friends and loved ones are not available. The best part is that they’ll be able to view your video message as soon as they sign into Skype. Skype Video Messaging is easy and convenient, and only the contact you’ve chosen to receive your message can view it.”

To use the feature, you simply tap the Video Message button within a Skype app, followed by the record icon to start filming a new message. Videos can be upto three minutes long, and you’ll be able to watch it before sending it.

“Skype Video Messaging adds another great way to keep in touch with friends and family during life’s most meaningful moments. Send a video message to your friends and family today-it’s easy,”

Skype Video Messaging is available now on BlackBerry, iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows, although there’s not yet a Windows Phone app available.

The latest big Guardian exposé claims that the U.K. government spied on G20 summit meeting guests in London using various methods. British spies have reportedly succeeded in cracking the security of BlackBerry’s,.

This most recent report, shows how British intelligence agencies monitored calls and online communications of foreign delegations at two G20 summits in London four years ago. It also comes as Britain hosts a G8 summit that starts today.

That program was run by the Government Communications Headquarters, known as GCHQ, an electronic eavesdropping group.

They did this, according to The Guardian, by setting up Internet cafes at the summit at which they could intercept traffic, and using key-logging programs. Some 45 analysts tracked the data.

As The Guardian notes, however, the program was less aimed at security threats and more at “securing an advantage in meetings.”

So far in this global controversy, attention has focused on how the U.S. National Security Agency ran a program known as Prism, aimed at scouring information from foreigners via e-mail, online chats, pictures, video conferencing and social networking. Companies caught up in the program included Apple Inc., Facebook Inc., Microsoft Corp., Yahoo Inc., YouTube, Skype and others.

There was no mention in U.S. documents, however, of Canada’s Research In Motion Ltd. and its highly secure BlackBerry.

But documents seen by The Guardian suggest Britain’s intelligence groups cracked it, though there are no details of what that involved.

“New converged events capabilities against BlackBerry provided advance copies of G20 briefings to ministers,” according to a document reported by The Guardian.

“… Diplomatic targets from all nations have an MO of using smartphones. Exploited this use at the G20 meetings last year.”

On its website, the newspaper posted part of the document, with bits blacked out.

Notable is a section that boasted of “recent successes,” and what the GCHQ was able to provide British analysts and politicians during the summit, where BlackBerry devices were concerned:

“Delivered messages to analysts during the G20 in near real-time. Provided timely information to UK ministers. Enabled discovery of 20 new e-mail selectors.”

These would have been older models of the BlackBerry.

“While we cannot comment on media reports regarding alleged government surveillance of telecommunications traffic, we remain confident in the superiority of BlackBerry’s mobile security platform for customers using our integrated device and enterprise server technology,” BlackBerry said in a statement today.

“Our public statements and principles have long underscored that there is no ‘back door’ pipeline to that platform. Our customers can rest assured that BlackBerry mobile security remains the best available solution to protect their mobile communications.”

According to The Guardian report, much of this was targeted at South Africa, whose government said today it was concerned.

“We do not yet have the full benefit of details reported on but in principle we would condemn the abuse of privacy and basic human rights particularly if it emanates from those who claim to be democrats,” the Department of International Relations and Cooperation said in a statement.

“We have solid, strong and cordial relations with the United Kingdom and would call on their government to investigate this matter fully with a view to take strong and visible action against any perpetrators.”
