The Tiruchi-unit of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu will conduct the Tiruchi Marathon on Sunday. The marathon will start from Anna Stadium at 7 a.m. It will be held for men and women (open category) for 21km and 10km respectively. For men and women (below 20 years of age) the race will be for 10km and 5km respectively. Boys and girls (below 16 years of age) have to cover a distance of 5 km. Eligibility :
Upper Age : 30 years as on 1.9.2010, i.e., not born earlier than 1.9.1980

Selection :-
Eligible candidates will be required to appear for a Written Examination, information for which will be provided in the Admit card. Candidates shortlisted on the basis of their performance in the Written Test will be intimated to appear for Group Discussion/ Interview.

Written Test :-
Eligible candidates will be required to appear for objective type written test in at any one of the centres at Agartala, Allahabad, Bangalore, Baroda, Bhilai, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Bokaro, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Delhi, Durgapur, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna, Ranchi, Rourkela, Salem, Trichy, Vijaywada and Visakhapatnam.

In the written test, there will be negative marking for wrong answers, i.e. 1/4th of the allotted marks for the question will be deducted for every wrong answer.

i) For MT(Technical) - In the Forenoon session
ii) For MT(Administration) - In the Afternoon session

Group Discussion/ Interview :-
Candidates shortlisted on the basis of their performance in the written test will be intimated to appear for Group Discussion/Interview, which may be held at short notice.

Training & Probation :-
Candidates selected as Management Trainees will be placed on training for one year. The Management Trainees (Technical) will be registered as Apprentices under the provisions of Apprentices Act, 1961. After successful completion of training, the candidates shall be placed under probation for one year.

Emoluments :
The Management Trainees will be offered Basic Pay of Rs.20,600/- p.m. in the pay scale of Rs.20600-3%-46500 (E-1). On successful completion of training the Management Trainees will be designated as Junior Managers in the same scale of pay.

Rajaraja Chola the Great

Rajaraja Chola I ( 985 to 1015 CE) was an unequalled monarch who ruled the entire Southern part of India over thousand years ago, whose greatness and glory can still witnessed by the world by his magnum opus the Brahadeswara Temple in Thanjavur.

He was born Arunmozhivarman, the second son of the Parantaka Cholan II alias Sundara Cholan and Vanavan Mahadevi. His brother the crown prince the Valiant Aditha Karikalan was assasinated and there was a political instability which followed this. Even as a youngster when all the people of the country wanted to crown him as the ruler, he declined and relinquished his right and requested his uncle to rule the mighty Chola kingdom to avoid any ill feelings in the family and waited for fifteen years to become the monarch and ruled for thirty years from 985 to 1015 which was the beginning of the golden age of cholas.

Its not an exaggeration to call RajaRaja Chola an all round genius earning him the various titles which can be found in his inscriptions.

He was valiant warrior and a master strategist who built his empire by his might of his army, navy and political treaties.

He paid meticulous attention to the welfare and comfort of his people. His local administration and civil administration system was par excellence.

Rajaraja built the Great temple of Thanjavur and covered the two hundred feet high tower with gold to signal his contribution. The temple survives to this day in its original grandeur. It is a magnificient haven of architecture, sculpture and paintings.

His rule demonstrates the equality and liberty the chola women enjoyed. His sister Kundavai and queens possessed property in their own names, which they donated to charity, temples and infirmaries and issuing orders with equal validity as that of the Emperor.

Rajaraja was a staunch follower of Saivism but ensured religious tolerance and patronized all religions Saivism, Vaishnavism, Saktam, Jainism and Buddhism alike.

On the basis of GATE-2011 score, the candidates will be short listed for further selection process comprising of :

Personal Interview for assessment of different facets of knowledge, skill, attitude and aptitude.
Please note that only GATE-2011 score is valid for this recruitment exercise. GATE score of 2010 or prior to that is not valid.

Candidates will have to qualify through each stage of selection process successfully before being adjudged as suitable for selection.

Selected candidates shall have all-India transfer liability and may be posted to any Division / Unit / Subsidiary Company / Office of the Corporation.

General category candidates will have to execute a bond of Rs.1,00,000 (Rs.25000/- for SC/ST/OBC & PH candidates) to serve the Corporation for a minimum period of three years from the date of joining (date of appointment as Engineer in case of GAEs after successful completion of training).

How to apply

GATE-2010 is scheduled on 13th February 2011. For detailed information on GATE-2011, interested candidates may log on to http://www.gate.iitm.ac.in or websites of other IITs and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.
Candidates need to purchase the GATE application form as per the information provided in GATE-2011 websites. They should fill-in and submit the GATE application form as instructed by the GATE authorities and wait for the admit card to get the GATE registration number
The candidates will receive their GATE-2011 registration number printed on their admit card. On receipt of GATE registration number, the candidates need to apply to IndianOil on-line. The relevant link will be made available from 10th January 2011 at the ‘Careers’ link of IndianOil website www.iocl.com.
Candidates should click on the on-line application link, read the instructions carefully and fill-in the on-line application form giving accurate information including the GATE-2011 registration number.
Upon completion, the candidate should submit the online application by clicking the Submit button at the bottom of the page. If the same is accepted, the system will generate a unique application ID along with the completed application form.
Candidate should take a print out of completed application, affix his/her recent passport size photograph, put his/ her signature at the space provided and keep with him/ her safely for future reference.
The passport size photograph affixed by the candidate should be the same submitted along with GATE-2011 application form. In case the candidate called for GD/GT and interview, he/she should come with this printed application form, along with GATE-2011 admit card and GATE-2011 official score card.

12th February 2011 is the last date for receiving application online.

Use Gmail to make VoIP calls: Hands-on review

With Google's Wednesday rollout to Gmail, the built-in Google Talk chat app is finally getting its own voice. Specifically, a plugin that lets you surface a dial pad so you can launch VoIP calls from the Gmail.com in-box, or from within iGoogle. The big caveat is that the service is currently being rolled out only to U.S. Gmail users.

We've been expecting something like this to happen since Google snapped up VoIP company Gizmo 5 last November, and there's even been speculation that this could have been a desktop app . But no, on Tuesday we discovered the online feature in-house, on Wednesday, Google made the VoIP news official. We buckled down to review the new service as soon as we got our online update.

Calling from Gmail

We tested the Google Talk VoIP capabilities on a Window desktop, a Windows laptop, and a Mac laptop. You'll see the "Call" button in Google Talk just under your name and status bar. In some instances, clicking to activate Google Talk's VoIP service will prompt you to install the Google Talk voice and video plugin before you can begin dialing. It may go without saying, but we'll say it anyway--you'll need to have a microphone handy, either in the computer itself, or in a headset, in order to hear your caller from your computer.

The VoIP interface itself is plain, in typical Google fashion, with just a dial pad on the bottom right of the screen. One extra tab shows your call history. Making outbound calls is straightforward--just type the digits. Since the new VoIP chat feature is integrated with your Google address book, you can also type a contact's name to get their number to appear; then call, call away.

When Google has added calling functionality to your Gmail, this is what you'll see.

We were pleased with the call quality, overall, when testing with other U.S. callers on landlines and mobile phones. Calls were loud and mostly clear, however, there were a few moments of garbled voices on multiple calls. There was alsosometimes a persistent high buzz that was noticeable, but which did not distract from the meat of the call. The experience was about on par for VoIP calls, which are known to break up due to variable conditions with the callers' hardware, strength of Internet connection, and the telecommunications channels that process the voice data.

We were also able to link our Google Voice account to our Gmail account. This made it possible to receive and answer inbound calls from our Google Voice number, though it isn't necessary to have a Google Voice number to use the new VoIP feature in Google Talk. However, you will need a Google Voice account to pay for International calls (Google Voice numbers are free, by the way.)

Is Google's VoIP a Skype killer?

We're going to hold off on any final pronouncements until we live with the service for awhile and get some more local and international calls under our belt. What we will say is that there are a few compelling reasons for users to choose Google Talk's Gmail VoIP service over Skype, and convenience is chief among them.

Google Talk has already had a video chat integrated into the service; this competes with video calls made through Skype, Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, and other chat services. Adding free local and low-price international calls will be attractive to users who can easily launch a voice call from within Gmail, if video isn't an option. However, we didn't notice an easy way to switch between voice and video calls once a phone call was underway.

Having the VoIP service tie into the Google address book is another perk that could attract new users. If you're keeping track of the service offerings, then the ability to make free outbound calls from the computer to a landline (in the U.S. or Canada) may tip the scale in Google's favor, depending on your individual calling habits. Skype calls are free from any computer in the world to any other (or from one mobile Skype app to another), but calling from the computer to the landline requires purchased credits.

According to a Google's chart on calling rates (pictured above), calls cost 2 cents a minute to landlines in the U.K. and France, and 6 cents a minute to India. As CNET mentioned in an earlier post, Google says it has no plans to raise rates beyond 2010, though the company will see if it grosses enough on international calls to continue supporting free calls to the U.S. and Canada.
