OK, so I admit, like most people, "Trapped in the Closet" reinvigorated my fascination with R. Kelly since "Space Jam" (Though the Ignition Remix is still fire). And here we see another great piece of fiction from Kells, joined this time with U(r)sher, where they seem to be dating the same girl. The innate details they include about this fake person (at least i think she's fake... one girl could get both kells and usher? i'm not even sure they go after the same age range.) Who are you? Madonna? "Hope" is supposedly co-produced by Timbaland, but hell if I can pinpoint what he did on it. And "Declare Independence" is like if Bjork went to Alec Empire from Atari Teenage Riot and said, "I'll only do a song with you if you can sample a cruise liner horn."

Two very disparate tracks. One very Canadian DJ-producer. DJ A-Trak has come a long way from being the 13 year old DMC champ to an honorary member of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz to spinning records on tour for Kanye West on "SNL" to making mash-up remixes with the likes of the Rub.

However, in each case, he definitely joined up with the ranks of each interest after it had become a burgeoning popular movement. A-Trak has a knack for being *gasp* trendy. He's got skills, but also knows how to connect with the right people at the right time...

The Little Brother beat, if not noted that it was produced by A-Trak, most would not assume such a fact. The Kid Sister track, though, is more of a ... insider-DJ type track. The kind of stuff you'd hear in one of those trendy NYC clubs that try to stay one step ahead of the game.

In the mid-90s, the Bay Area underground rap scene was run by a few syndicate-like groups. There were others here and there, sure, but the largest names were the Living Legends, Hieroglyphics and Bored Stiff. The Legends, which are composed of various rappers from up and down the California coast, have gone onto individual careers of varying success and still periodically reunite for group albums. Hieroglyphics were arguably the most famous of the groups, but their shimmer quickly faded after the home runs of "93 Til Infinity," "No Need For Alarm," "Fear Itself" and a stand up triple in "3rd Eye Vision."

But the last group, whatever happened to Bored Stiff? They were the most street of the backpacking superstars and had head bobbing, West Coast production style. One of the members, Equipto, went on to a reasonable solo career, many times pairing with fan favorite Andre Nickatina. But largely, we haven't heard from them much for about a decade.

Bored Stiff is back, though, with three new songs, and a pending album is set to drop in 2007. From the sounds of these two tracks I've provided, it sounds like they haven't abandoned their signature sound, for better or worse. In a post-hyphy, post-backpack world, can Bored Stiff hold up where few have persevered? MURS and Del are the light at the end of the tunnel.

Better than Wu-Tang Never... right? I saw Raek, Deck, GZA and Mr. Golden Arms U-God himself on Saturday night, backed by El Michels Affair, a 12 piece funk band (so they claim... i counted about 7 members on stage). Like always, they took forever to get on stage, albeit they were just anchoring the production competition that took place earlier that evening. The backpacks were in full effect, as the super rap nerds came to see the "select" members of Wu while on the other side of town, Trae and Clipse apparently set up shop and attracted, let's just say, the "CMJ Demographic." I heard it was good, though. But so was the Wu show. They tore it down with the live band. Anyway, this El Michels Affair shit is pure cut dope (Chef, get it?), and one of the nicest things I've heard in a minute.

How much money is Ghost making off making appearances on trendy Spank Rock-ish albums? Speaking of "CMJ Demographic".... I thought he was still gangsta, adding back the "Killah" to his name, but I have my doubts now. I wonder how much he knows the Canada/Falcon/fish posturing worked in some ironic-pseudo ignorant hip way (a la Dipset, but he can rap). Like the audio-version of BAPE here. Man. I'm not too mad at this track though. OK, I am. But anger makes me forget that I'm deeply insecure. Rawr.
