Been a while since we've thrown up a post. I wanted to explain why there's no episode today. There have been 2 COMPLETELY UNRELATED events from both Andy and myself. Andy had a 5-kilometer obstacle race thingy. It's called the Warrior Dash.
Unfortunately, my event was far less enjoyable. My grandfather recently passed away, so I have been out of town a bit. We have not been able to get a time where we can devote ourselves to recording, so the episode this week may be late. Or non-existent. Not sure which yet. We'll keep you guys updated!

My delight is that despite following these trends, every year it seems that Andy's bracket invariably falls short of .... well of a bracket where the team with the funniest name goes on to the next round. I felt that it was so good, that I would INVENT and utilize my once a year "David's Length Prerogative", which states that for one episode a year I get to override "Andy's 60-minute rule" and have the podcast go on and on and on and on..
Andy still shortened it, so it should SOUND the same with that hurried conversation that you all know and love (as a result of the "remove silence" feature) but there's just MORE of it.

The reasons that the podcast isn't up already are two fold.

#1. We recorded at 2pm yesterday, so I had less then 12 hours till Monday hit.

#2. It seems that the HDD that I recorded to, seems to have some issues. So it's taking a long time to get my uncompressed audio files to do anything right now. (Saving the files normally takes 4 mins - Right now it's 15 mins... each) That's also why my voice is sounding a little odd during this episode.

I don't often use this position to write a post anymore. I generally prefer to just let the episode speak for itself.
However, from time to time, I come across a gem of the internet, and I prefer not to wait for the rigid self-imposed publishing schedule that we have set up.
This is one of those times. EA, a company that we have on occasion insulted, has done something rather amazing. This site is where you can download C&C: Tiberian Dawn, C&C Red Alert, and C&C: Tiberian Sun. These are AMAZING games and are far more than worth the price of admission (which is, in this case, zero). Hope you guys enjoy this.

Long ago in the days of Napster, when you could browse other peoples' music files and download a-la-cart, I started seeing some interesting files. Mp3s that had titles like "Zelda Remix" and "One Winged Angel". These songs called to me through some unknown force, and enthralled me. My collection expanded greatly and rapidly when I discovered the OSTs for Final Fantasy, and put much of my money towards though purchases. Then I found the glory of OCRemix, and all the amazing artists there.
Skip forward about 7-10 years, and I have now seen Play, Dear Friends, and Video Games Live (twice!). Beyond that, I've been to PAX, where there are video game concerts galore!
It was somewhere in this mess of music that I first heard Mustin and the OneUps. I've been a fan of their work for some time now, and was really excited to have him on the show. For examples of Mustin's music, I would suggest hitting up these sites, or... listen to the ending. The outtro was hijacked by Andy, and features the SMB Sleigh Ride.

I rarely comment here anymore, preferring to let the show do most of the speaking for itself, but today I can not remain silent. You see, we recorded this episode on Saturday, at about 1:00. Usually, by this time, Andy has already done some editing, so that he can spread it around during the weekend and not drive himself insane. However, the late recording of this episode meant that Andy had to cram in alllll his editing into one day, Sunday, in order to have the episode out to you guys "on time". Now, I personally was expecting the episode to come out on Tuesday at the latest, and most likely on Monday night. However, here I am on Sunday night and the podcast is sitting in my news feed.

So, Andy and I both had a fantastic and amazing time at PAX. If you want to see pictures, scour the internet, he'll be in most of the ones under "Waldo and PAX09".
We managed to bring back a TON of swag, including a good number of PAX 09 avatar shirts for Xbox Live, which I will be posting to twitter. So you might want to start following us if you haven't already.
Unfortunately, Andy & I brought something else back. Now, there's been a lot of reports of the slightly less deadly but far more (if you'll excuse the pun virulent form of the Flu, H1N1 being spread around (unintentionally, I'm sure) PAX. I don't believe that this is the form that I caught, but whatever bug I picked up, it's kicking my ass. And the reports are that Andy's doing worse. We should be doing better in a few days, we're both hunkered down for some rest and - at least for myself - drinking plenty of fluids.
In any case, next week should have plenty of PAX info. If it doesn't, then it will be a random topic recap.

Not that it is terribly important, I came to a realization while reading about how Digg has (for the moment) hijacked their url shortener. These many sites: bit.ly, tiny.url, tr.im, is.gd, etc., all pretty much grew from twitter. The most remarkable thing though, is that just over 3 years ago Twitter didn't exist. In fact, it didn't gain popularity until late '08, and these services sprang up and multiplied shortly thereafter. No one could have predicted their prosperity, because without twitter and its 140 character limitation, they're pretty much useless when compared to just plain Copy+Paste.
I'm not going anywhere in particular with this one, but I thought it was interesting food for thought.

It's music related and it's got two layers to it. Which to me, means that it was too good to pass up.

The first layer is a reference to the song "Rocket 88". This song, written by the late Ike Turner (yes, Tina's Ike), is considered one of the first rock and roll songs. But as you can see i spelled it "Rockit". That's the second reference. "Rockit" was a grammy award winning song by Herbie Hancock, and was one of the first popular songs to use turntable scratching.

So, you can see why I had to do it.

If you have been listening us for two years, you may have started to see a pattern forming.
Unfortunately, this pattern shows no sign of breaking. I haven't heard from Andy in a week, and I'm just working under the assumption that his new job is kicking his ass. I'm in the middle of that wonderful part of the school year where all the projects are due and finals have begun. As such, episodes and updates may be a touch sporadic. However, we're still alive, and hope to be recording soon.

We also discussed the fact that he recently reformatted his computer and that my laptop was (again) on the fritz. So we decided that we would do a special episode, reviewing and giving thoughts on some specialized programs for Maintenance and Recovery. These are programs that Andy or myself have used at some point, and many are programs that we still use today.

Ok, here's how it works. This week I editing the podcast twice. Once was just for time and the other was with my full magic bag of tricks. And when I made the final mp3, I cut between the two of them at random points in the podcast.

The goal of the contest is to find all of those cuts. just keep a small piece of paper handy when you listen and if you hear the audio change, just write down the time and/or what was said. And if you could, give me your opinion on if the change is for the better or for the worse. Then let me know somehow what your answers are, and the winner will be the one with the most correct information.

The reason I'm doing this, is I'm starting to realize that maybe all the stuff I do for a high quality recording isn't getting transferred to the mp3, So if people can't tell where the changes are, then I don't have to do all of the long tedious work, and we could get the podcast turn around to mere hours instead of days.

Well, I have finally managed to eek out the bit of code that will handle this request. If you look off to the right, in the happy side-bar, there is now no longer a "Last 3 Episodes" section, but rather a "List of Episodes" section with a selection menu. Select the appropriate episode and hit "Go!" to be taken directly to that Episode's page!

And here we go again. Hopefully this marks the resumption of our weekly schedule. I guess you can expect this annual break in early September. So, we bring you Episode 75 - Paradise

Someone has posted "high quality" mp3s of Mega Man 9's music discs. Listening to the old (emulated) NES soundboard chipset produced music brings both nostalgia and questions to my mind. This is one of the, if not the absolute, first mainstream games to make this stylistic choice; that is, choosing to use an 8-bit sprite based system and a sound system that was the primary reason video game music has been associated with "beeps and boops." (The latter of which some people are trying very hard to overcome.)
So, what then, is the point? Are they doing it as a publicity stunt? Was it financially driven? (Cheaper Graphics -> Cheaper Game.) Is it purely a stylistic choice and they just like 8-bit? Or perhaps they were trying to make a statement about gameplay over graphics? I'd like to encourage discussion of this in the forums, and have made a post for it. Andy will almost certainly want nothing to do with it, purely because it's Mega Man 9. I think the only other series he'd care LESS about would be if Square-enix decided to do something slightly original for a change (Yes, I know.) and create Final Fantasy XIV using an SNES emulator.

We did not manage to record either of our 2 planned PAX episodes, but we DID manage to come up with one other one. Andy's working on the audio of it right now, but his laptop's harddrive is going bonkers. As such, the next episode may be a little delayed. Please stay tuned.

Andy talks about kidnapping me and taking me away from technology, but when I actually leave and don't take technology with me, he starts to panic.

Qs23: Episode 67 - WTF - The Reason

Ok, in case you wanted to know, here's the reason for the delay.

We recorded around the normal time, and I normally work on the cast while I'm at work on Saturdays. But that Saturday, I had to show somebody else how to do my job, so I wasn't able to get it done then.

The reason I had to show somebody how to do my job was because I was going to be out of the state last weekend. And since I was leaving this state at 5 am on Thursday, I had to get all my work at schoolwork done by Wednesday night. So that took up basically all the time until Wednesday evening.

So I finally get to sit down and work on the podcast. And boy was that fun. During the first 7 minutes of the cast, I tried an experiment with my mic... and failed. So that had to be fixed, After that was done, I noticed during the final mix that the audio starts going crazy around 40 minutes. (I have no clue. Computer glitch or something is my best guess) So to fix that, I had to go back and fix my experiment and then fix the out-of-sync audio.

Finally, the icing on the cake was that we had a really shitty thunderstorm on Wednesday night which knocked out the internet all night, so even if there were no problems with the audio, I wouldn't have been able to post it until I got back to the land of internet and cellphone last Monday/Tuesday.

So that's why the cast was late. And thank-goodness we didn't record last week. Cuz now we can be back on schedule without having to do anything crazy.

Well, Andy has up and disappeared on me. I have no clue where he went to nor for how long he will be there. I do know he was planning on leaving the state by Thursday morning, and that he will be leaving FROM K-zoo, so I'd have to guess he's THERE for now. This wouldn't be a problem, except he still hasn't uploaded Episode 67, which we recorded on like... Friday. So, until he gets that to me, no new episode. However, it works out fine, cause we probably weren't going to record this weekend anyways. Which you'd have known about if I had Episode 67 to put up.

Now, one last thing. We added the ability for users to submit links via the side-bar in the hopes of using some user-generated content, thereby officially making this a Web 2.0 project. However, I ask that you use this new tool responsibly. Andy and I both have the ability (and retain the right) to delete your submitted links. If you feel that we did this unfairly, feel free to contact us or make a posting in the forums. If you plead your case, we may even put the link back up.
Continued abuse will result in removal of your ability to submit new links. And we wouldn't want that to happen, would we?

Ok, so if everything went all right, you won't notice a thing. However, if it didn't... well, then I'm using this space to explain what's going on. You see, in order to update a new episode, I used to have to download the finished mp3 from andy, tag it, reupload it, edit the appropriate fields on the episode's page (Mp3 name, random topic, etc.,) publish the page (make it visible to the public,) and THEN deal with the feed. The feed itself meant opening an ftp program (I prefer Filezilla for that,) navigating to the file, opening, copy the newest item, paste it, edit the date, edit the GUID, edit the file name, edit the link, edit the enclosure, SAVE the file, upload the file, open the SSH to the server, tell it that I've updated the file, open feedburner, tell IT that the feed's been updated (this step is extra, feedburner would find out in about 1/2 an hour anyways.)

That's a lot of time spent on what should be a small task! So, I've had "create auto-generating rss feed" on my TODO list for a while, and I think I"ve finally managed to get it working. If all goes well, the new feed should absolutely replace the old one. If it goes badly.... well, I'll just have to try to restore the old feed the way it was.

Dave thinks that skit is funny. And for those who don't understand the ending of the random topic and the podcast, here's the explanation. Back in High School, I was a member of the basketball pep band. And for some odd reason, our pep band shirts had a picture of Opus on the them. Well for some odd reason, everybody kept on saying that Opus was a Platypus, even though I knew, from reading the comic, that Opus was a penguin. And I made it my goal to set the story straight with everybody.

Well, some of my friends (including my to-be-fiance) decided it would be fun just to disagree with me on this point for no other reason then to watch me get worked up about it.

So what you hear at the end, is the snapping of my psyche, as the years of constant pressure have finally taken their toll.
