Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds

Today's portion is from Deuteronomy 7:12-11:25 it is called Ekev which means "if you follow,"

Moses tells the Israelites that if they obeyed God's rules, God would truly maintain the covenant. The Israelites were to destroy all the peoples whom God delivered to them, showing no pity and not worshiping their gods. They were to burn all idols and not to keep anything.

God recalls the lessons he taught the Israelites in the wilderness for 40 years.

Miraculously their clothes did not wear out, nor did their feet swell for 40 years. God disciplined them as a man disciplines his son.

Moses warned the Israelites that they were to dispossess nations greater than they, but God would go before them as a devouring fire to drive out the land's inhabitants. God had not enabled them to possess the land because of their virtue, but God was dispossessing the land's current inhabitants because of those nations' wickedness and was fulfill the oath that God had made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Moses then reminded them about the incident with the golden calf and retells the story.

Moses reminded the Israelites how they provoked God. Moses had to lay prostrate before God for 40 days, because God was determined to destroy the Israelites. Moses recalls the two tablets and the Ark of the Covenant, the death of Aaron And the promotion of Eleazar.

Moses described God as supreme, great, mighty, and awesome, showing no favor and taking no bribe, but upholding the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and befriending the stranger.

Moses then says the Shema and instructs in the binding of scripture to their hands and forheads which is known today as taffilin. Also posted at the door is the mezuzah.
And that is Ekev in 60 seconds.

Parsha in 60 Seconds Presents Devarim

Shalom and welcome to the Parsha in 60 seconds.

Today's portion is from Deuteronomy 1:1-3:22 it is called Devarim.

We have now concluded the book Numbers and we must venture into Deuteronomy. 40 years have passed since the Exodus and Moses is giving a big speech. Moses appoints a hierarchy leadership system. The Israelites plan on taking the land and send 12 spies, find giant fruit and giant warriors. Israelites hide in their tents out of fear. God throws down with the Israelites and now nobody except Caleb and Joshua will possess the land.

Wandering begins and end when the sinful generation dies. the Israelites met plenty of people along the way. God tells them not to provoke these people or take their land with exception to Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon. While passing through Heshbon peacefully God hardened Sihon's heart and he attacked and FAILED. King Og head the news and came to fight in Bashan and FAILED. Og was so big that is bedstead was nine cubits long and four cubits wide. The land is then given to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh. These tribes were commanded to continue fighting until all the kingdoms west of the Jordan were taken down by God.

And that is Devarim in 60 seconds.

christina, I will let the rabbi provide a better answer but my understanding was that the Jewish people of the day were not interested in a suffering servant, they were looking for the "Son of David" to overthrow the Romans (we know as the 2nd coming)

hello rabbi Aharon farhi, it is an honour to know you are on this RITA Now website.

do you mind if i ask you something? could you explain to me, why the jewish people did not accept Jesus as THE one, the only messiah ? what signs or prophecies did he fail to fulfill? in other words, who exactly are they waiting for? sorry i have no practising jewish people to ask here.

i am sorry if this is an ignorant question. i am a relatively new christian, and only beginning to get to grips with our world's history of religion.

ANyway, since becoming a christian, i have a love for Israel and jewish people, which i was not aware of before. (no hostility either). i would be grateful if you have time to enlighten me,

Maybe the time of redemption will be the rapture. This could be just an opinion, but I've heard it expressed that God will not come and intervene on behalf of the Jews in a miraculous way until He first removes the church at the rapture. Here is God's miraculous intervention portrayed in scripture, but it seems it is during the Tribulation, aka the Time of Jacob's Trouble:

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Christians and Jews share the first five books of the Bible. Jews call that the Torah, the sacred scrolls revered in every synagogue in the world.

They believe they contain the words of God given directly to Moses roughly 33-hundred years ago.

But now a group of researchers says hidden within those words may be messages for us about this year -- 2012.

Rabbi Rick Winer of Temple Beth Israel in Fresno sings an ancient song.

"We have carried this tradition for thousands of years and even before we carried the scrolls we carried the melody," Rabbi Winer said.

The words of the Torah set to music. But a group of Jewish researchers say these ancient scrolls may also carry something else. Hidden, encoded details about our time and this very year.

"There is a code in the Torah. The first five books of the Old Testament. The code is real and mathematically provable. The advent of the computer has made it possible." This is from a trailer for "Torah Code 2012" -- a new documentary in progress.

Nearly 30 years ago Dr. Eliyahu Rips and a team of Jewish mathematicians became the first to use computers to search for equidistant letter codes in the Torah, and they say they found them.

"We cannot pretend that we have a real full grasp of it but using the means at our disposal we can see it is real," said Dr. Rips, a mathematician and code researcher.

They published a paper on their findings. Several books and much debate followed, but so has a steady stream of stunning "code tables." Rips and other researchers say they continue to find...with startling details about current events. But it was a documentary filmmaker's question that turned their search to this year.

"And I said so what does the Torah code say about 2012? About a week later I get a call from Jerusalem and it's Glazerson and he said, 'Oh this is brilliant. We found all kinds of tables on 2012.' A few minutes later I get a call from Professor Haralick from New York and he said, 'Richard you don't know what you've started. They've actually set up a meeting with the high Rabbi in Jerusalem to see if they can do your project with you,' and I said, 'they did?' And I said, 'why?' Because of what they've discovered about 2012 really stunned them," said Richard Shaw, with Pinlight Productions.

Not with the stuff of the Mayan calendar or Hollywood movies but with a scenario virtually ripped from today's headlines.

"Vashanaya is the year which one ve ta shin ein vet 5772, which is 2012," said Rabbi Matityahu Glazerson, a Torah code researcher.

"We have a bunch of tables on war, on World War," said Shaw.

"This is Case Olam the end of the world," said Rabbi Glazerson.

But also in the 2012 codes, says Shaw, the hope of a biblical promise fulfilled.

"There's a number of 2012 tables that talk about redemption, and they're usually connected a lot with the return of the Messiah," said Shaw.

"Here is Gerulatiel. It will be a time of redemption," said Rabbi Glazerson.

And a date.

"Passover which is Pesach which is a date for redemption for the Jewish people," said Rabbi Glazerson.

Passover...April 6 through 14, 2012. But both the researchers and Shaw say this is not a prediction.

"The Torah is not a crystal ball and none of us believe we should use it in that respect," said Shaw.

They say it is simply what they have found, encoded messages in the Torah for 2012. Messages that many choose not to believe in at all.

"Most within the mainstream Jewish community look at that and say well it's a neat trick but it's not necessarily going to guide the way we live our lives. Wether it has every event spelled out into it, if someone wants to believe that, that's fine. Me not so much," said Rabbi Winer.

But those who do believe say it won't be long before we will all see what if any meaning the 2012 Torah codes have for us.

"We feel like we're kind of entering into that period. It seems like all of those things are lining up. All the ancient prophecies and things are happening in the world today," said Shaw.

When Yaakov asks of Yosef "Who are these?" it is not because his eyes are dim or that he does not know Yosef's sons intimately. It is because in his prophetic mind's eye he see the boys' greatness in the future redemption of Israel, which is taking place today. His words are not a question but an exclamation of sublime joy and approval.

Why was Avraham avinu interceding on behalf of the wicked people of the decadent city of Sodom? Was he your typical bleeding-heart liberal who can't distinguish between right and wrong? On the contrary, Avraham was showing his faith to the one true G-d and to the role that G-d granted him as guarantor of humanity.
