1791 Bocage View of the Temple of Poseidon, with Plato and Disciples

This is a fascinating example of the 1791 Bocage view of Cape Sounion in Ancient Greece. The site is famous for the ruins of the Temple of Poseidon (the Greek God of the sea). This view features Plato, the Greek philosopher and mathematician sitting amongst his disciples outside the Temple of Poseidon. Prepared by M. Barbie de Bocage in 1791 to illustrate the Travels of Anacharsis .

1791 Bocage Plan of the Temple of Theseus and the Parthenon, Ancient Greece

This is a fascinating example of the 1791 Bocage plan featuring the Temple of Theseus (Temple of Hephaestus or Hephaisteion), the elevation of the Parthenon, and a view of the Parthenon. The Temple of Hephaestus, located in the Agora of Athens, is considered the world's best-preserved ancient Greek temple. In the 18th century the Hephaisteion was believed to be a temple dedicated to Thesues (as noted in this map) and the resting place of the mythical hero Theseus.

1791 Bocage Plan of an Ancient Greek House, according to Vitruvius

This is a fascinating example of the 1791 Barbie de Bocage plan of a typical residence in Ancient Greece. Based on the design of the Roman architect Vitruvius, it features a key at the bottom identifying each room as belonging to the 'Apartment of the woman' or the 'Husband's Apartment'. Prepared by M. This is a fine example of the 1791 Barbie de Bocage map or plan of the Propylaea in Ancient Greece. Divided in two, the upper portion of the map shows a plan of the 'Gateway to Acropolis', while the lower half contains a beautiful view of the same. Prepared by M. This is a fine example of the 1791 Bocage plan of a typical ancient Greek gymnasium. The gymnasium or palestra usually consists of a central court surrounded by colonnades and various rooms used for bathing, storage, etc. It was typically used as a training facility for competitors in public games as well as a place for socializing and intellectual pursuits. This is an attractive 1791 map of Ancient Greece. It includes Crete, the islands of the Aegean Sean and the parts adjacent Turkey. Take from the early D'Anville map. Notes important cities and towns along with various other topographical features. Following the Battle of Corinth in 146 BC, the Greek peninsula came under Roman rule. The period from 31 BC and AD 180 in Greek history is described as the era of the Pax Romana.

1784 Bocage Map of the Battle of Thermopylae Pass, Ancient Greece

This is a fascinating 1784 map or plan of the Thermopylae Pass in Ancient Greece. Also known as 'The Hot Gateway' due to the numerous sulfur springs. This pass is the site if the famous 480 BC Battle of Thermopylae between Xerxes I of Persia and the 300 Spartans, led by King Leonidas.

1785 Bocage Map or Plan of the Battle of Salamis, Ancient Greece

This is a fascinating 1785 map of the naval Battle of Salamis fought between the Greeks and the Persians. The map depicts the 480 BC Battle of Salamis, one of the most important conflicts in ancient Greek history. According to the historian Herodotus, the Greek victory at the naval battle of Salamis, in conjunction with another victory at the land battle of Plataea, marked the end of the first Greco-Persian War.

This is a fascinating 1782 map of the Hellespont (Dardanelles) in antiquity. Cartographically based on an earlier chart by D'Anville, Barbie de Bocage's map covers the narrow strait connecting the Aegean Sea and the Sea of Marmara. Referring to the account of the Greek historian Herodotus, Bocage identifies the 'Lieu ou Xerxes fit jetter un Pont' (place where Xerxes threw his bridge).

The map covers the regions surrounding the cities of Athens, Megara (the birthplace of Euclid) and Thebes. 1787 Bocage Map or Plan of Delhpi, Ancient Greece

This is a fascinating 1787 map or plan of Delphi and its vicinity in Ancient Greece. The map covers the region from the Crissean Gulf to Amfissa. The top portion of the map contains a view of Delphi and the Rocks of Parnassus. Parnassus, in Greek mythology is a sacred to Apollo and also the home of the winged horse Pegasus. Delphi, the seat of the Oracle Pythia was considered to the center of the Earth by the Greeks. It was also home to the Pythian Games, a forerunner of the modern Olympics.

This is an attractive 1791 map of Argolis in Ancient Greece. The map covers the region southwest to the Isthmus of Corinth and includes the island of Aegina. The cities of Athens, Corinth, Troezen, Epidaurus , and Argos are identified. It is here that the Shrine of Epidaurus, dedicated to the god of medicine, Asclepius, was located. Prepared by M. This is a fascinating 1780 map or plan of Olympia (Olympus) in Ancient Greece. The map details the site of the ancient Olympics and notes many important buildings and structures, including the stadium, the hippodrome, the Temple of Jupiter (Zeus). This is an attractive 1786 map of Arcadia in Ancient Greece by M. Barbie de Bocage. Bocage based this chart on an earlier map by D�Anville. Arcadia, according to Greek mythology was the home of the God Pan. It is surrounded by Achaea in the north, Argolis and Corinthia in the east and Laconia and Messenia in the south. Highly mountainous, this remote region according to Herodotus was inhabited by 'indigenous' Greeks living there before the arrival of the Hellenic tribes. Prepared by M.
