We have posted many FZR1000’s over the years, but not many are 1988 low miles with a blue color scheme. Tad’s past musings are worthy of resurrection, “Having spoken with a couple people about the Yamaha FZR1000 of the late 80s and early 90s, I’ve gotten the distinct impression that, however competent it may have been, it really wasn’t cool in the way the Suzuki GSX-R1100 was. I think someone went as far as to say they were kind of the “nerdy” choice, at least among ballistic superbikes, so it figures I’d be into them.

It is a bit ironic that the FZR would be considered less cool than the GSX-R, considering that it was a much more advanced machine in many ways. The big Suzuki was a bit of a dinosaur, with an effective, but relatively primitive double-cradle frame, while the Yamaha was built around their light and very stiff aluminum Deltabox design, the first time the concept had been applied to a liter-plus bike.

Both bikes offered a broad spread of locomotive thrust, and did just fine with five-speed gearboxes, although the FZR managed to be as fast as the GSX-R, while giving away displacement to the Suzuki. And even though the GSX-R, originally eschewed liquid-cooling as a weight-saving measure, still ended up being pretty portly. The original 1987-1988 version of the FZR1000 used a 989cc version of Yamaha’s Genesis five-valve engine, although it lacked the EXUP valve that would become another of the FZR’s signature features. Five-valve technology has proven to add additional complexity for minimal returns and isn’t often seen anymore, but the engine’s steeply-canted design and under-tank airbox set the standard for sportbike packaging.

I think ultimately, the FZR was a victim of its own success. The Genesis was smooth, powerful and possibly a bit too refined. People generally don’t buy big sportbikes because they want refinement, or because they need them. It’s the same mistake Yamaha made with their RZ500: Suzuki’s Gamma was wilder and woolier, and stole the RZ’s thunder. Here, the Gixxer’s bad-boy reputation means that it’s an appreciating object of lust, while the Fizzer can be had for relative peanuts.

For now anyway…..The FZR may never achieve the desirability of a GSX-R1100 but, given how the values of all bikes of this era seem to be on the rise and how scarce really clean examples are, now’s the time to jump in if you want to recapture your youth or just want a very cool, versatile retro ride.”

Ducati’s Tamhburini-designed 916 and its smaller-engined sibling, the 748, had a massive impact on the sportbike world. Ducati had already moved into the modern era with their 851 and 888 superbikes and proven that they could, with a few rules concessions, compete against the might of the Japanese manufacturers in international racing, but the 916 combined the company’s booming Desmoquattro v-twin performance with jaw-dropping good looks. What was really interesting was the impact the Tamburini superbikes had outside the motorcycling world, as the bike became an icon in the same way that Ferrari had, a casual shorthand for exotic speed and aspirational luxury lifestyle as it made appearances in film and television, sometimes just as a prop, as scenery, sometimes as a full-blown star in its own right. That kind of media presence reached its zenith, or nadir, depending on your point of view, with the Ducati 748L Neiman Marcus Edition, a run of just 100 bikes sold exclusively through the Neiman Marcus catalog and all finished in the same shade of Metallic Mercury.

If you’re looking for a collectible Tamburini-era superbike, you won’t find one in much nicer condition, with lower mileage, than this Ducati 748L Neiman Marcus Edition. As a bonus, the Neiman Marcus version looks very classy and understated in silver, and the bike is extremely rare, actually much rarer than bikes like the much sought-after 748R. But rarity is only one driver of desirability, and the 748L, as sharp as it looks, is really more poseur than racer, with its rarity defined simply by paint and a plaque on the triple clamp [not pictured, nor is the odometer]. Other than the paint and plaque, it’s a bone-stock 748, with a smattering of carbon-fiber farkles. And it only came as a biposto. That may be one reason there are no bids on this very clean, low mile bike yet, although another example with higher mileage did sell for just a tick under $15,000 on BaT last year, so it’s likely we’ll still see this one sell for solid money, depending on where the reserve is set.

1984 Moto Guzzi Le Mans III

Moto Guzzi’s follow up to the iconic Le Mans I and mild stylistic rework that was the Mark II version, the Moto Guzzi Le Mans III was a much more dramatic revision of the bike in terms of its appearance and its mechanical components. The classic Tonti frame remained the same, but the bodywork was all new, designed, believe it or not, in Moto Guzzi’s very own wind tunnel. The new dash featured a giant white-faced Veglia tachometer and was made of a soft, rubbery material designed, presumably, as a safety measure. Under the new, very angular skin, the revisions were evolutionary, but significant. Internally, the heads now featured Guzzi’s proprietary Nikasil-type coating while externally, the cylinder heads featured the new square design that matched the bike’s overall aesthetic. The cam, valves and displacement remained the same but, in typical 80s fashion, compression dropped slightly from 10.2:1 to 9.8:1. Happily, performance actually increased, with improvements to both horsepower and torque. The resulting bike had plenty of Guzzi’s traditional charms: distinctive styling, long-legged v-twin power, stable handling, and easy maintenance.

Very original LM3 in white. Runs well. Ready for the road IMO. I would get tires if I kept it. Missing orange fairing decals and original air box. Both are easy to source. 1 signal lens is missing tabs to hold in place. 

The Moto Guzzi Le Mans III has largely been overlooked in favor of its more desirable 1970s predecessor, but it featured evolutionary improvements and I happen to like the stylistic changes. It’s unfortunate that the seller is leaving out a few details about what’s on offer here in their written description. The photos show what appears to be a completely non-standard side-stand installed on the bike, as well as the stock item included as a spare. That could be good news, as the stock part is… not the most convenient to use, depending on how long your legs are and how flexible your ankles. There’s also a spare sump included that may or may not allow for spin-on oil filters to be used: stock bikes need the sump dropped and an internal filter changed, I believe. It’s hard to tell the condition of the white paint from the photos, but the brightwork on the mufflers suggests the bike has generally been well cared for. It even includes the funky original key! All-in-all, a very cool classic bike bargain.

Obscure, overbuilt and gone too soon.

This is our first Motus, and I’m curious to hear what you all have to say. According to what I’ve read it feels like a muscle car in sportbike form; effortless speed and tons of torque everywhere. (I’m trying to imagine Red’s 1970.5 Camero in bike form and it’s making my brain hurt. Perhaps this is more of a modern muscle car feel?)

Motorcycle.com did a thorough review of the bike if you are interested, and they spoke to one of my concerns, parts & repair. “Many enthusiasts like the idea of a big V-4 sport-tourer, but are worried about investing in a product from a new company ….  the engine maker, Pratt & Miller, is a pretty big company with a long history and a diverse product line, including defense contracting and aerospace. The rest of the parts come from outside suppliers you’ve heard of: Brembo, Öhlins , BST, Akrapovic and others. And the motor is designed to be low maintenance, with hydraulic lifters and a spin-on oil filter…. the bikes require no special tools, which would make a BMW dealers’ head explode.”

Brand new, these were selling for around $30k. Now what’s going through my mind is whether this obscure artifact is appealing to any of our collectors? Ride it or hide it? Perhaps a bit of both?

Ducati’s sculptural 916 may have made headlines for being “the world’s most beautiful motorcycle” and found its way onto the bedroom walls of teenagers all over the world. But ultimately, it was the chunkier, slab-sided Ducati 851 that was really the game-changer for the company, a bike that offered truly modern performance and helped the company make a leap forward that many of its European peers could not. It was the bike that made Ducati relevant again to a contemporary audience, and set the stage for all of the blood-red Italian exotica that would follow. Today’s Featured Listing is a Ducati 851 Strada, the “entry-level” version of this iconic superbike that would have been sold alongside various homologation versions of the bike.

Ducati’s bevel-drive/tower-shaft v-twin of the 1970s is undoubtedly a gorgeous powerplant, but it wasn’t at all suited to mass-production. The 1979 introduction of the two-valve “Pantah” engine, with its cams now driven by modern rubber-belts, was the first step in making the brand relevant to modern audiences. But, although Pantah-engined machines were successful in a variety of racing series, Ducati needed something that could compete on the world stage against the very best machines being produced by Japan. 1987 saw the introduction of the Ducati 851, a bike powered by a truly modern engine: the Desmoquattro, a fuel-injected, four-valve, liquid-cooled, dual overhead cam engine that, naturally, displaced 851cc and featured Ducati’s Desmodromic valve actuation. Producing a claimed 104hp in Strada or “street” trim, the new engine was backed by a six-speed gearbox and suspended in a brand new trellis frame.

Designed to compete in the then-new World Superbike racing series and almost exclusively available in a striking Tricolore color scheme at first, the new bike got off to a slightly rocky start on the road, with handling issues caused by the 16″ wheels originally fitted to the Strada, something that was sorted by switching to 17″ hoops on later bikes. There were no such issues on track, and upgraded “Kit” bikes homologated the new Ducati for competition, winning the 1990 World Superbike Championship. By 1991, the 851 had been superseded by the updated 888, although the two weren’t radically different. In fact, the 1992 version of the 851 Strada seen here was sold alongside the 888 SP4, and 888 SP4S homologation models.

Appeals to real Ducati aficionados
Sadly, the Ducati 851 has historically been considered less desirable than the 916. It certainly doesn’t lack significance or racing pedigree but, while it is a handsome machine, it doesn’t really hold a candle to the 916 in terms of raw aesthetics. It’s a bike that appeals to real Ducati aficionados though, rather than “enthusiasts” who wouldn’t know a Pantah from a Paso. The problem with anyone seeking an 851 hasn’t been the prices, which have generally been affordable, it’s finding a good one: these were pretty inexpensive for a long time and, as with many older Italian vehicles, were sometimes maintained on the cheap. And, with many Ducati parts being interchangeable between models, wheels, suspension components, and other bits have been mixed and matched over the years, making a truly original machine a rare find.

This particular Ducati 851 Strada is available for $12,000, has extremely low miles and isn’t completely stock, but features period-appropriate aftermarket components to upgrade the performance and, let’s be honest: the noise. The original booming four-valve Ducati twin, combined with good looks and slightly more comfortable ergonomics than the 916 that would follow? What’s not to like?

1993 Triumph Dayona 1200

In the early 1990s, “literbikes” were more gran turismo than outright sportbike, with 750cc machines representing the premier class for four-stroke performance in World Superbike racing. The Triumph Daytona 1200 was no exception, powered by a honking big 1180cc inline-four engine and six-speed gearbox with gentleman’s express quality and character. To be fair, even its little brother with a 900cc triple was trying to carve its own niche, rather than compete directly against the Japanese sportbikes of the period. The entire range of Triumphs from the reborn company were built around a modular range of engines and frames that allowed to company to easily and affordably produce new models, but this also meant the individual bikes would never be as highly developed and refined as machines produced by the larger, more financially stable Japanese companies. Instead, Triumph produced bikes like the new Daytona, devoid of boy-racer graphics, with more reasonable ergonomics and higher build quality to appeal to a very different sort of rider.

This Hard-to-Find Classic – For the True Rider

If you know, you know. This is one of those bikes that rarely pops up, and when it does, it doesn’t last long. One of 20 to leave the factory in Triumph race yellow, out of a total production run of only 300 Daytona’s that year. Imported in 1993 a rare 1200cc four designed to compete with the likes of the ZX-11, GSX-R1100.

It’s been taken care of properly from nose to tail, valve lash checks to suspension servicing, brakes ect, not abused, and it shows. Starts right up, rides smooth, and still has that raw character you just don’t get with newer machines.

Not in a rush to sell. Looking for someone who will appreciate what it is. $9200 cash/obo.

I was excited to trip over this listing, as I’m a fan of these early Triumph Daytona 1200s although the seller seems to be suffering a bit from “I know what I got.” He is correct that these are very rare, but recent examples have sold for well below his asking price. Still, even at $9,200, this is a pretty rare and surprisingly competent bit of two-wheeled kit, with good build quality, handsome looks, decent ergonomics, and mile-munching performance from that big inline-four engine. Note also that the odometer appears to read in kilometers, indicating that this is likely a grey market import, if that’s a concern for you.

1986 Suzuki GSX-R1100

The very idea of the “sportbike” has been an evolution, but a big reason modern sportbikes look like they do today is down to this machine here, Suzuki’s GSX-R1100. Roadgoing motorcycles had been available in previously from other manufacturers built around a template that included full fairings and monoshock rear suspensions, but Suzuki’s GSX-R range really helped make the package affordable and practical for average motorcyclists. Interestingly, while many of its contemporaries were quickly moving to liquid-cooled engines, Suzuki decided to use an air/oil-cooled inline four for their new sportbikes to reduce weight and improve reliability, via their Suzuki Advanced Cooling System [Note: prominent SACS logo] high-capacity oiling pump. That new powerhouse of an engine, here displacing 1052cc and producing 128hp, was suspended from an aluminum box frame that featured thicker tubing than its 750cc sibling, with a monoshock “Full Floater” rear end and NEAS anti-dive forks up front. The resulting machine was a relatively light 489lbs dry and offered stunning performance that basically defined performance for a whole generation of riders.

This example of Suzuki’s GSX-R1100 appears to be in very good condition and includes a very nice four-into-one Yoshimura exhaust that should save weight, sound better, and look sleeker than the stock system. Luckily, the seller includes the original components if originality and that funky slotted exhaust shroud is more your thing. The bike also features non-standard wheels, although I’m not clear if they’re later 17″ or the original 18″ size. Again, the stock parts are included if you want to go back to stock. Prices for these early Gixxers are pretty shocking these days, but at least that money does buy you an eminently usable classic sportbike in a package that combines heritage, style, performance, and reliability.

Back in 2017 Aaron found a Blackbird with 22,000 miles on the market asking $4,500. “Before the Suzuki Hayabusa swept in at the turn of the century to claim world’s fastest production bike status, the Honda CBR1100XX Blackbird ruled the top speed roost. When it came out in 1997, the Blackbird, named for the Lockheed SR-71 spy plane, stopped the motorcycling press in its tracks.”

Tad featured one in 2019 with only 13 miles on the odometer! That one sold quickly for $9,900. “The CBR1100XX is certainly not the fastest bike now, but it’s an incredibly capable one, with the high build quality you’d expect from a top-of-the-range Honda hyperbike and excellent reliability. Given that it was obviously never intended for any sort of competition, the road-bike focus also means the Super Blackbird has inherent versatility. This is a bike for riders who love all sorts of riding, but can only afford, or have space for one bike: commuting, canyon riding, sport-touring, all with ballistic speed. I’m sure you could even do the occasional track day on one, although it wouldn’t be your first choice… The only downside is the extra weight you often find with do-it-all bikes, but that just means stability, wind protection, and room for a passenger or luggage.”

Considering today’s bike only has 4,750 miles, $8,500 seems like a great deal.
