2009 Aprilia Mana 850

The Aprilia Mana 850 might have been a bike just a bit ahead of its time. Powered by a 90° v-twin developed in-house by Piaggio instead of the more sporting Rotax unit found in the RSV1000R, the Mana’s real party trick was a CVT automatic gearbox of the kind more commonly found in scooters. It’d be easy to dismiss the bike as something very unsporting, but Aprilia did their level best to perk up the drivetrain by adding a “7-speed” mode that could be shifted via handlebar-mounted paddle shift or the traditional foot-shift, and the tach-less dash adds set of sequential shift lights to aid in making the most of the 54hp on tap. The powertrain is hung from a very Ducati-ish trellis frame, and the suspension is mostly non-adjustable, although most of the components are otherwise of high quality. If all of that sounds underwhelmingly non-sportbike, you’re not alone: buyers largely didn’t choose to partake of this Mana. But the package worked quite well on the road, and reviews of the bike were generally very positive. The Mana was possibly just a bit too odd to catch on then, but as we move into a more automatic future, with quickshifters and autoblippers becoming the norm and systems like the Rekluse clutch used by MV Agusta becoming more common, perhaps it will find a second life as a quirky classic.

These Aprilia Mana 850s occupy a bit of a weird place in the motorcycling world. It seems like many “real” riders don’t take them seriously because of that automatic transmission, but there are more and more similar systems on high-end bikes these days, and I think that the somewhat primitive CVT will prove less of an impediment for future riders, assuming we can still get gas to run these things. Aside from that somewhat off-putting gearbox, the Mana is otherwise a pretty handsome and capable machine. This one has very low miles and is being sold for cheap by the original owner. One caveat: the owner does appear to have moved the front brake to the left side of the bike, although on a positive note, said braking is provided by a Brembo radial master cylinder. If you need a cool scoot and arthritis is robbing you of hand strength, you’ve got an old war wound, or you just hate clutches, this could make a pretty great do-it-all ride. And, if your spouse doesn’t like you riding motorcycles, you can just tell them not to worry: it’s a scooter…

1999 Yamaha YZF-R1

As modern motorcycles move steadily towards a future that incorporates electronics in virtually every aspect of their function, the Yamaha YZF-R1 represents perhaps the pinnacle of analog superbike development: no traction control, no ABS, no rider aids whatsoever, barely a sensor in sight, just a quartet of carburetors controlled by your right hand via a set of cables. The engine was a development of the FZR1000’s five-valve Genesis inline four, made significantly more compact by stacking the gearbox shafts. This allowed the engine to be placed to maximum advantage in the chassis for optimum weight distribution and allowed the longest swingarm possible in the shortest overall wheelbase. That engine displaced 998cc and was naturally fitted with Yamaha’s signature EXUP valve. Power was rated at a mere 150hp but, when stuffed into a claimed 390lb dry package and lacking the aforementioned rider aids, it made for quite the wild ride at the time and journalists hurled every superlative they could think of at the then-new superbike. As is always the case, other manufacturers soon followed suit, and evolution followed revolution: the R1 is still around today, but while that bike’s cross-plane crank certainly sounds amazing and offers theoretical performance advantages, the overall package doesn’t offer the same radical advantages as the original, compared to its contemporaries.

The Yamaha YZF-R1 really isn’t my style of sportbike, but that’s just my opinion, man. The bike is unquestionably an icon, a revolutionary superbike in the way that Honda’s CBR900RR is, a motorcycle that crammed big-bike power into an agile middleweight package and combined it with Japanese refinement. This example of the original R1 doesn’t have especially low mileage, but appears to be in good cosmetic condition, although those rear turn signals look a bit wonky, that TwoBrothers Racing lettering on the exhaust isn’t stock, and I’m pretty sure these didn’t come fitted with steering dampers as standard. Maybe they should have though. The $8,000 asking price is pretty steep, but these are pretty rapidly appreciating and it’s getting harder and harder to find clean examples. It’s listed as “or best offer” so if you’re in the market, maybe just make him an offer.

We have seen a handful of these Anniversary Editions on the site. Some readers love them, others meh. Jim commented last year, “As a VFR owner I can say they really are do-it-all bikes. The 1975 Honda CB400F Super Sport sits in a really interesting spot in sportbike history. It’s not the fastest thing from the era—that title belongs more to bikes like the Honda CB750—but the 400F was arguably one of the first bikes that felt like a true sportbike for everyday riders. Light, rev-happy, and fitted with that beautiful four-into-one exhaust, it was built more for carving backroads than straight-line speed.

What makes it special now is how well it balances usability and character. It definitely has character and will turn heads. It’s small by modern standards, but that’s part of the charm, you actually use all of it. Finding one with just 3,200 miles is kind of wild, and bikes like this remind you that “sportbike” doesn’t always mean extreme, it also means fun.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but this seems like a great deal.

If you are not familiar with the bike, Tad gave us some insights in 2024, “Nowadays, the “literbike” class is littered with highly-strung racetrack refugees making 200+ horsepower and weighing about as much as a pack of cigarettes. But back in the 80s and 90s, it was the 750cc class that represented this kind of single-minded speed, and 1000cc motorcycles were geared  towards a more civilized experience. Introduced in 1987, the CBR1000F Hurricane was engineered with a blend of high-tech and cost-saving elements. The engine was a 998cc inline four backed by a six-speed gearbox while other bikes in the class often used just five. That engine produced a claimed 130hp, along with 76lb-ft of torque, and was wrapped in aerodynamic bodywork that channeled air around and through the machine. But the frame was steel, as was the swingarm, and suspension had minimal adjustability: the rear shock had just five settings, and the the fork had none, although you could vary the amount of air pressure in the tubes to control things somewhat. The cost-saving measures meant that the bike undercut its competitors in terms of price, while offering an extremely competent, if somewhat bland experience.”

The bike Tad was posting had over 40k miles and was listed for $4,699. Today’s bike is listed for $3,600 with only 6,200 miles. Who’s looking for a Hurricane?

The Norton motorcycle brand was such a performance powerhouse in its day that its name still casts a shadow that reaches into the modern era, and the brand has been the subject of a number of attempts to bring it back from the dead, although most of those bikes have been so much vaporware to this point. The only exception has been the Norton Commando 961 Sport, an evolution of Kenny Dreer’s restomod Nortons of the early 2000s that were so highly modified they ultimately shared almost no parts with the original Norton Commando on which they were based. The Commando 961 began development in 2008 when Dreer’s project was taken over by a British company and the design was further modernized and readied for “mass” production, although much of the development had already been done by Dreer. As you’d expect, displacement was now 961cc, but the engine still used the original Norton design’s pushrod actuated valves and remained air-cooled. A 270° crankshaft replaced the original 360° component to further refine the engine, and an electric start was fitted with an eye toward improving the ownership experience for riders who may have already had a hip replaced… The updated engine put a claimed 80hp through a five-speed non-unit gearbox and the finished bike performs as you’d expect: the engine is rough and agricultural, but emotional and full of character. The quality Öhlins suspension and fundamentally sound suspension geometry mean good handling, and the bike is excellent fun if your expectations are reasonable.

UK businessman Stuart Garner, owner of Norton Racing Ltd, acquired the rights to the Norton Commando brand. His company, Norton Motorcycles (UK) Ltd, then established a new factory at Donington Park, Leicestershire in 2008 to manufacture a new Commando model. To be completely honest, I want to like the Norton Commando 961 Sport Cafe Racer more than I actually do. I love the idea of it, and there’s a high level of craftsmanship on display here, along with quality components, all wrapped around that handsome and charismatic chunk of an engine and gearbox. But to me the styling all looks just a bit too modern to be retro, and a bit too retro to be modern. But I’m in the minority among my motorcycling buddies: most people I know seem to just love these. And while the $16,000 asking price is far from cheap, it does buy you a pretty exclusive bit of kit, with the aforementioned craftsmanship and detailing, and quality suspension components. The admiration of all the boomers at your local bike night is included for no additional fee.

1979 Honda CBX1000

Although it’s unquestionably a handsome bike, there’s really only one reason to own the CBX1000, Honda’s big lump of late 70s UJM muscle: that giant inline six slung across the frame, with its matching cascade of six exhaust pipes. Displacing 1047cc, with dual overhead cams and 24-valves, the engine produced a surprisingly modest 105hp and the bike weighed a hefty 600lbs full of fluids. The standard suspension wasn’t really up to the task and handling was mediocre, but the engine had a wide spread of power and made glorious noises, especially with a freer-flowing exhaust fitted. A number of boutique manufacturers attempted to better Honda’s attempt by building lighter, stiffer chassis to house the spectacular engine, and a second generation of the bike offered a monoshock suspension, better wind protection from a full fairing, and fitted luggage, but the original, naked classic still commands the most attention and the highest values by far.

Aside from the weirdly low effort eBay listing that includes conflicting information [the odometer] and confusing content [READY REGISTRATION?], this Honda CBX1000 appears to be in excellent cosmetic condition with just 4,289 miles showing on the odometer. Or is it the 4,639 mentioned in the listing? Either way, the bike is fitted with a very nice, period appropriate Kerker 6-into-2 exhaust system. Sure a 6-into-6 would evoke the racing Hondas of old and announce to the world that you do indeed have a six-cylinder motorcycle, but the Kerker pipes look sharp, should sound great, probably weigh less, and might offer a bit more ground clearance as well. The bike appears to run, thanks to the very short, four-second clip included in the listing, but otherwise there isn’t much information here. I’d have some questions for the seller before plunking down the nearly $20,000 being asked.

This 1998 Ducati 916 SPS is one of approximately 100 units produced between the end of 1997 and early 1998, and this example was acquired by the current owner on BaT in May 2022. Now showing 5k miles, the motorcycle is finished in red with white accents.
