By the late 1980s, superbike homologation requirements were having significant influence on what was being sold in showrooms by the major motorcycle manufacturers. Honda’s rare and exclusive RC30 was an outlier, in that its entire production output was created to satisfy homologation requirements. Other manufacturers were happy to sell plenty of lower-spec but still very fast versions of their road-going sportbikes to punters who fancied themselves a dab hand at strafing apexes, while building a handful of exclusive, tricked-out versions for racers. The ZXR750, known in the US as the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-7, certainly looked the part of a World Superbike racer, but needed significant upgrades in order to be competitive on track. The RC30 was a race bike for the road, the ZXR was a road bike you could easily, if not necessarily cheaply, turn into a race bike. The engine was an evolution of their proven 749cc liquid-cooled inline four producing a claimed 108hp, installed in an all-new aluminum frame. Power may not have been top-drawer, but handling of the ZX-7 received excellent reviews at the time, although the rear suspension of the original H1 models was also considered to be outrageously stiff.

Aftermarket items are complete stainless steel exhaust by Hindle. Aftermarket windshield and levers. Factory levers are included.

Bike was forgotten in a shed for many years and has not run for nearly 4. Bare minimum it needs fuel and a battery but no attempt to start it has been made.

Tank shows no rust inside when looking inside.

I have paperwork in my name for the bike and registration papers will come with the bike.

I’m always a little leery of posting up bikes like this particular Kawasaki Ninja ZX-7/ZXR750, but it seemed like a potential opportunity for the right buyer. There are some real risks involved, and any new owners should be prepared for a complete teardown, but the bike appears to be largely complete and original, non-standard exhaust aside. Anoraks please feel free to comment below and point out if there’s anything glaringly off here. It’s obviously a bit of a gamble, but nice sportbikes of this era are getting harder and harder to find in this price range. Assuming it just needs some basic maintenance and a splash of gas, this could be a very affordable way into classic Kawasaki ZX-7 ownership, even if it isn’t one of the more desirable and exotic homologation variants that came later.

A bit of an interim model, Yamaha’s YZF1000R was sold here in the US only in 1997, before the introduction of the YZF-R1. The R1 was really a paradigm-shifting bike that helped usher in a change from big, stable, but slightly heavy literbikes like Yamaha’s own YZF1000 and FZR1000 to much lighter, more agile machines as production-based racing formulas shifted from 750cc to 1000cc. The Yamaha YZF1000R Thunderace, as it was known in other markets, soldiered on both before and after 1997 as a high-performance all-rounder, a greatest hits motorcycle pulled from Yamaha’s deep well of performance parts: the forward-canted 1002cc Genesis inline four producing 145hp, five-valve cylinder head, signature EXUP EXhaust Ultimate Power valve for increased midrange power, a stout five-speed gearbox, all hung from an evolution of the company’s Deltabox frame and stopped by a set of the company’s famous “blue spot” calipers. The bike was no lightweight at 494lbs wet, but performance was well regarded at the time and the Thunderace was capable of 164mph straight out of the box.

1996 Yamaha YZF1000R Thunderace – Low VIN #167 (Original Owner)

I am the original owner of this 1996 Yamaha YZF1000R Thunderace (VIN sequence #167). The bike has 40,800 km (~25,350 miles) and has never been crashed.

Condition & Cosmetic History: Aside from normal wear expected for a vintage bike, the only cosmetic damage occurred while in storage: the bike tipped over onto its right side while covered in thick blankets. As a result, there is a small dent on the fuel tank, along with cracked/broken fairing plastics on the right side (upper fairing, side fairing, and front fender).

Originality & Modifications: The bike is highly original, complete with all factory warning stickers still intact. The only exceptions are:

• Replacement windshield screws.

• A modified chain and sprocket kit imported from Europe (geared for faster acceleration, allowing the bike to pull easily to the redline in 5th gear, with top speed adjusted to ~270 km/h / 168 mph).

• Included extras: An aftermarket dark smoked windshield and a Wileyco Racing performance muffler.

Storage & Maintenance: The bike has been stored in a heated garage since 2015. Prior to storage, all fluids were flushed and replaced. To preserve the engine, it has been started twice a year, and the fuel was kept low and refreshed annually.

It’s not 100% clear from this eBay listing just where today’s Yamaha YZF1000R Thunderace currently resides, but the pricing appears to be in Canadian dollars and the license plate says Quebec so we’re going with “Quebec.” This one looks to be very clean, aside from a few honestly represented cosmetic issues. These are very rare here in the states, slightly less so elsewhere in other countries where they were sold for more than just one year. A last gasp of the big gran turismo literbikes before machines like the R1 decided you had to have R6 ergonomics to go with your newer, more compact package. It’s a shame, as so many superbikes offer performance that’s really only useful for short rides, and I’d love to track down a nice Thunderace, or big Ninja, or Gixxer, fit some adjustable bars, and see how they work for sport-touring. Word is they do pretty well.

This 1993 Moto Guzzi Daytona 1000 comes from the model’s first year of production and is one of 308 produced for homologation purposes. This example was purchased by the seller in 2014, and it now shows 21 miles. Power is from an air-cooled 992cc 90-degree V-twin paired with a five-speed transmission, and the bike is finished in red with gold graphics. Equipment includes 17″ alloy wheels, a Marzocchi fork, a Koni monoshock, a solo seat, a half fairing with a tinted windscreen, and a side stand. Recent work has included replacing the battery, changing the oil, and performing fuel and brake system flushes. Previously offered on BaT in May 2026, this Daytona 1000 is now offered again at no reserve with a tool roll, manufacturer’s literature, and a clean Virginia title in the seller’s name.

Up for sale is my 1990 Yamaha FZR600R with just 5,456 original miles. This is a true survivor that has spent most of its life in a garage and remains in excellent condition for its age.

The bike has received extensive maintenance in April 2026, including:

• Brand new brake lines

1995 Ducati 900SS/SP

During its production run, the Ducati 900SS/SP lived in the shadow of its sleeker, sexier, higher-performance siblings the 888 and 916. But those bikes were also much harder to live with: they suffered from increased maintenance costs and reliability issues, as well as committed ergonomics that made long days in the saddle nearly impossible for the kinds of riders affluent enough to afford an exotic Italian motorcycle. But the 900SS was a different sort of Italian sportbike. Built around the [ahem] mature air/oil-cooled two-valve, 904cc Desmodue engine producing a claimed 84hp and backed by a six-speed gearbox and dry clutch, the bike came in two flavors here in the US for most years: the very handsome half-faired 900SS/CR [“cafe racer”] with non-adjustable fork, steel swingarm, and narrower rear wheel, sold along side the more limited-production 900SS/SP [“sport production”] with full-fairing, adjustable fork, aluminum swinger, wider wheel, a bit of carbon bodywork, and a numbered plaque on the top triple. From a pure performance standpoint, the bike makes little sense. But this is one of the all-time great sports motorcycles, with a charismatic engine that punches well above its weight, excellent handling, handsome looks, decent reliability, and reasonable parts availability. If you’ve ever wondered if you might be a Ducati guy/gal, this is the perfect way to find out.

With that claimed 84hp, the air/oil-cooled Ducati 900SS/SP may not offer much in terms of horsepower per dollar, but is a great value in terms of smiles per dollar. This one is on the pricier side but appears to be in excellent condition and has a number of things going for it, besides the overall condition and low miles. The belts and valves have been done, with pics of the new belts helpfully included, meaning a couple important service items already ticked off the list for a new owner. And the set of 41mm Keihin carburetors are a very nice upgrade to the stock Mikuni CV units and would currently run a couple grand on their own, although installation is at least pretty simple if you’re handy. The D&D cans should be suitably loud, if nothing else. Again, the asking price is on the high side but, if you’re buying a Ducati, it’s a good idea to buy the best you can find as it will likely save you money in the long run. This one looks like it might be a good investment.

Selling my 1991 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-7 w/ 21.5k miles. Bike is incredibly clean and very original. The bike has never been down, steering stops are intact, bodywork and tank are in impeccable shape for an unrestored original paint bike.

This is an incredible example of one of the green Kawasakis that got so many of us hooked on this sport. I’ve babied the bike in a heated garage, starting and riding barely once per year.

The bike runs great, fuel system is well sorted (no clogged anything).

The bike is not “perfect”, but it’s a solid 9/10 or better. It would require very little to get it to perfection if that is your goal. Non-OEM items on the bike include a full Muzzy race exhaust, a fox shock, and a non-original clear windscreen. In terms of defects, there are some very minor cosmetic nits here and there that you’d expect for an original 35 year old bike. I’ve done my best to show these in the photos. A scratch on the right side fairing just below the seat, some paint flaking on the very bottom of the right fairing, and a repair on the inside of the left nose that appears to have resolved the beginnings of a stress crack in the fairing.

This is the bike that made a lot of us want a green Kawasaki before we even knew why. The J-model ZX-7 landed in 1991 with USD forks, a lighter chassis, and a reworked engine. It’s also the same nameplate Doug Chandler rode to the 1990 AMA Superbike title for Muzzy Kawasaki, with Scott Russell following it up on the homologation-special ZX-7R in 1992. That Muzzy can on this one isn’t just a period-correct mod, it’s basically a costume nod to the real thing.

Facebook Marketplace listings are always a little thin on detail, so if you want the deeper mechanical story on this platform, we covered the ZX-7R K1 homologation special back in 2018, worth a read since the standard ZX-7 and the R share a lot of DNA but not everything.

$10k for a clean, original, 21.5k-mile J-model with some race pedigree flavor isn’t crazy money for the segment right now. Would you keep the Muzzy and Fox shock as period-correct character, or hunt down OEM parts and put it back to stock?

The 599cc engine only exists because Kawasaki needed to homologate something under 600cc for Supersport racing after stuffing the 636 into the regular ZX-6R. Kawasaki only built these in limited numbers to satisfy the rules, and most of them got raced hard or parted out.

14,000 miles means still plenty of life left for a rider, and this is a bike that wants to be ridden.

At $3,500 with a known punch list, this has real potential, either as a weekend track bike or a rare piece to hang onto as these get harder to find in one piece.

1997 Yamaha YZF1000R Thunderace; fully rebuilt, big-bore, one-year-only US model.

Frame-off rebuild by me with only ~4,000 miles on the fresh motor. Chassis shows 46,000, but the engine is essentially new.

The Thunderace was only sold in the US for the 1997 model year: FZR1000 EXUP engine in a YZF frame, “bike of the year” in ’97, and the last of the old-school big-bore Yamahas before the R1. Rare here, and parts are easy since it shares them with common Yamahas.

The rebuild: I bought it in 2010 and stripped it to the frame before even riding it. While the engine was apart I installed a Wiseco 1040cc big-bore kit and replaced all the valve stem seals (the weak point on these YZFs/FZRs — mine has zero leaks). The rebuild was done to curb any potential oil consumption, not due to any internal engine damage. Fork seals and stainless braided clutch and brake lines done at the same time.

It sat in storage after an unrelated 2014 accident on a different bike of mine — this Thunderace was parked and untouched, never involved. I pulled it out last year and got it fully sorted. Fires right up and runs strong. New tires last year with almost no miles on them (still have the nubs).

46,000 miles would normally be too many for us to post, but the motor’s basically new, and that’s the part that matters here.

We’ve covered a few Thunderaces before, most recently in 2024. Quick recap for anyone new: US buyers only got this bike for one year, 1997, before the R1 took over and buried it. Everywhere else, it kept selling for years. Sellers love calling it “Bike of the Year” for ’97, we’ve never been able to run that claim down to an actual source, but the bike earns its reputation regardless.

This one’s coming from Nick, a longtime reader, and the rebuild reflects it. Someone who tears a bike down to the frame before ever riding it isn’t cutting corners.
