The last time I visited the cathedral was in 1962/3 so our visit was little over due.

This is print would be welcome to anyone who loves railways, Bridges, or Rivers.

The print was framed and is now hanging in our private gallery and is looking for a new home.

Millers Dale is a valley on the River Wye in Derbyshire.

It is a popular beauty spot in the Peak District of England, much of the area being preserved as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Nearby is Ravenstor and Cheedale, both popular with rock-climbers. Just to the north of the Dale lies the village of Wormhill and the lesser known valleys of Peter Dale and Monk's Dale, the latter being listed as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a nature reserve.

The local landmark is the viaduct, first built by the Midland Railway in 1866. Increasing traffic meant that a second viaduct parallel to the first was built in 1905, increasing the number of tracks to four. Millers Dale railway station was at the junction where passengers for Buxtonjoined or left the trains between London and Manchester.

The area is of great interest to geologists, particularly where the strata have been exposed by quarries and railway cuttings. In Station Quarry, which is owned by the Naturalists Trust, two layers of limestone can be seen, separated by a bed of shale. At one point there is a dip in the lower layer, possibly from a watercourse, millions of years ago. This is filled with the shale and a large limestone boulder can be seen within it. Elsewhere in the area there are signs of lava flows from long-ago volcanic activity.

Northwards from Millers Dale the line entered the two Chee Tor tunnels (401 and 94 yards), separated by a 50-foot-high (15 m) bridge over the River Wye, then along a ledge cut into the rock face, before entering Rusher Cutting Tunnel (121 yards), crossing the Wye yet again by another viaduct. The line here was immensely difficult and expensive to construct, skirting, as it did, the base of the 300-foot (91 m) high ciff of Chee Tor. Chee number 1 was, until May 2011, sealed off for safety reasons, but it is now possible to walk through all three tunnels. Further on was the triangular junction for Buxton via Blackwell Mill, before continuing to Peak Forest.

Large sections of the trackbed now form part of the Monsal Trail, a cycle and walking trail.

Just when you thought there could be no more good rock autobiographies, some of the biggest icons in music are willing to set the record straight

I love a good rock autobiography. Actually, I love a bad rock autobiography, too: even a book that's guarded and self-serving and craven reveals something about the star behind it. But there was a time, not long ago, when I thought the rock autobiography was a dying art form. Most artists you wanted to hear from had already put pen to paper – McCartney, Dylan, Johnny Rotten – and the ones who hadn't were clearly determined to take their secrets to the grave. All you were left with were people with no secrets to tell or whose secrets you weren't particularly interested in: umpteen members of US metal bands, all carrying on as if they were the first people in history to work out that vast quantities of cocaine aren't necessarily fulfilling.

But Keith Richards' Life changed everything: it won awards, sold millions and got people excited in a way that no Rolling Stones album had for decades, because it was more interesting than any Rolling Stones album for decades. In the wake of its success and the face of a vast publisher's cheque, a certain kind of rock star decided that their privacy perhaps didn't need policing as zealously as all that. So it is that this year brings autobiographies from two of rock's most gnomic figures, Morrissey and Neil Young, as well as the Who's Pete Townshend and the Manic Street Preachers' controversialist-in-chief Nicky Wire. Those four are exciting because they have a way with words, as does Tracey Thorn who, as anyone who follows her on Twitter knows, is hootingly funny in a way that rather contradicts Everything But The Girl's dour image. Exciting for reasons other than prospective literary merit are Rod Stewart and John Taylor from Duran Duran, whose autobiography is apparently called – and I'm not making this up - A Million Little Seductions.

This reproduction print is part of large collection of framed prints of film actors and actress, from an age gone by, but never forgotten that we bought from an auction recently.

I must confess that I am not big fan of Marion Davies, however my mother enjoyed her films.

This print is framed and the size 20 x 25 and is in good condition.

Davies was born Marion Cecilia Douras[1] on January 3, 1897 in Brooklyn, New York, the youngest of five children born to Bernard J. Douras (1857–1935), a lawyer and judge in New York City; and Rose Reilly (1867–1928).[2] Her father performed the civil marriage of Gloria Gould Bishop.[3] Her elder siblings included Rose, Reine, and Ethel. A brother, Charles, drowned at the age of 15 in 1906. His name was subsequently given to Marion's favorite nephew, the screenwriter Charles Lederer, the son of Marion's sister Reine Davies.[4]

The Douras family lived near Prospect Park in Brooklyn. The sisters changed their surname to Davies, which one of them spotted on a real estate agent's sign in the neighborhood. Even at a time when New York was the melting pot for new immigrants, having a Britishsurname greatly helped one's prospects – the name Davies has Welsh origins. She was educated in a convent.

The sisters all hit the Great White Way, and Marion was signed on as a Ziegfeld girl in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1916.[5]

After making her screen debut in late 1916 in a fashion newsreel, modeling gowns by Lady Duff-Gordon, she appeared in her first feature film in 1917's Runaway Romany.[6] It was a film written by Marion and directed by her brother-in-law, the prominent Broadway producer George W. Lederer. The following year she starred in three films, The Burden of Proof, Beatrice Fairfax, and Cecilia of the Pink Roses. Playing mainly light comedic roles, she quickly became a major film personality, making a small fortune which enabled her to provide financial assistance for her family and friends.[5]

Cecilia of the Pink Roses in 1918 was her first film backed by Hearst. She was on her way to being the most famously advertised actress in the world. During the next 10 years she appeared in 29 films, an average of almost three films a year.[7]

Framed print that we bought from an auction in London which we have hanging on our wall at home, we have always enjoyed this print but is is time for change.

Edward John Gregory (April 19, 1850 – June 22, 1909), British painter, born at Southampton, began work at the age of fifteen in the engineers drawing office of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company.

Afterwards he studied at South Kensington, and about 1871 entered on a successful career as an illustrator and as an admirable painter in oil and water colour. He was elected associate of the Royal Academy in 1883, academician in 1898, and president of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours in 1898.

Boulter's Lock, Sunday Afternoon (1882–97) of Boulter's Lock on the River Thames at Maidenhead is one of his most well-known paintings.

His work is distinguished by remarkable technical qualities, by exceptional firmness and decision of draughtsmanship and by unusual certainty of handling. His "Marooned," a water colour, is in the National Gallery of British Art. Many of his pictures were shown atBurlington House at the winter exhibition of 1909–1910 after his death.

Bought from a local auction in large box prints and postcards and photographs.

The Croton Distributing Reservoir, also known as the Murray Hill Reservoir, was an above-ground reservoir at 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue in the New York City borough of Manhattan. It supplied the city with drinking water during the 19th century. The reservoir was a man-made lake 4 acres (16,000 m²) in area, surrounded by massive, 50-foot (15 m) high, 25-foot (7.6 m) thick granite walls. Its facadewas done in a vaguely Egyptian style.^[1] Along the tops of the walls were public promenades, offering breathtaking views. After construction was completed, it became a popular place to go strolling for residents of New York City; Edgar Allan Poe enjoyed his walks at this location.^[2]^[3] The reservoir held a total capacity of 20 million US gallons (76,000 m³).^[4]

When established, the Croton Aqueduct was once NYC's foremost water source. Amidst great fanfare, water was introduced into the Croton Distributing Reservoir on July 4, 1842.^[5] Prior to construction of the aqueduct, water was obtained from cisterns, wells and barrels from rain. The aqueduct and reservoir obtained their names from the water's source, a series of mostly underground conduits that would bring water from the Croton River in northern Westchester County to NYC's spigots.

The Croton Distributing Reservoir was torn down at the end of the century; in the 1890s. Today, the main branch of the New York Public Library and Bryant Park exist at that location. Some of the reservoir's original foundation can still be found in the South Court at the New York Public Library. Today water is primarily supplied to New York City via its three city water tunnels. The Central Park Reservoir still remains, but since 1993 has no longer been in use.^[6]

Subway commuters can see a historical plaque showing the former reservoir. The plaque is located on the wall in the underground passageway that connects the Fifth Avenue Station of the IRT #7 and 42nd Street Station on the IND Sixth Avenue Line.^[7] A few years before the reservoir was torn down, there were two tablets affixed to the Reservoir.^[8] The inscription was:

HISTORICAL AND DESCRIPTIVE ACCOUNT OF THE CROTON AQUEDUCT -- The Law authorizing the construction of the work, passed May 2nd, 1834. Stephen Allen, William W. Fox, Saul Alley, Charles Dusenberry and Benjamin M. Brown were appointed Commissioners. During the year 1834, two surveys were made--one by DAVID B. DOUGLASS and the other by JOHN MARTINEAU. In April, 1835, a majority of the Electors of the City voted in favour of constructing the Aqueduct. On the 7th May following, the _Common Council_ "instructed the Commissioners to proceed with the work." David B. Douglass was employed as Chief Engineer until October, 1836; when he was succeeded by John B. Jervis. In March, 1837, Benjamin M. Brown resigned, and was succeeded by Thomas T. Woodruff. In March, 1840, the before mentioned Commissioners were succeeded by Samuel Stevens, John D. Ward, Zevedee Ring, Benjamin Birdsall and Samuel R. Childs. The work was commenced in May, 1837. On the 22nd June, 1842, the Aqueduct was so far completed that it received the Water from the Croton River Lake; on the 27th the Water entered the Receiving Reservoir and was admitted into this Reservoir on the succeeding 4th of July. The DAM at the Croton River is 40 feet high, and the overfall 251 feet in length. The CROTON RIVER LAKE is five miles long, and covers an area of 400 acres. The AQUEDUCT, from the DAM to this Reservoir, is 40½ miles long, and will deliver in twenty-four hours 60,000,000 imperial gallons. The capacity of the Receiving Reservoir is 150,000,000 gallons, and of this reservoir 20,000,000. The cost, to and including this Reservoir, nearly $9,000,000.
