GIVING US ALL 'SOMETHING WE CAN FEEL'

So much talk is going around about whether or not Beyonce has or hasn't once again copied works for her newest video COUNTDOWN.

My thing is why are we upset either way. The fact is that artists take inspiration from one another. It has been that way for as far back as we can remember. And is there anything really wrong with that. Madonna copied from movies for her videos. Rappers use 'rifs' constantly in there music. Even the latest Jay-Z and Kanye song is a huge re-incarnation of music originally done by OTIS READING.

There is nothing new under the sun and if an artiste pays homage 'with respect' where is the dishonour. Copying is one of the greatest forms of approval there is. It is testimony that someone thinks sooo much of what you do that they are willing to copy or re-express it in their own way. In many ways this is what life is about, and it is not copying as much as it is exposing a newer, younger group to the works of the past.

Perhaps, what needs to be done is to acknowledge the legends of the past more actively when their works are used, and in that way not only do we continue their greatness, but we excel in ensuring that our own does ot look as if it has been built on the unappreciated bones of others. So perhaps the question is not if she were inspired but rather whether she acknowledges the inspiration.

Even now as you read this WHITNEY HOUSTAN and JORDIN SPARKS have been touted to be in the remake of the classic movie SPARKLE. Yes, yet another movie based loosely on the life of Diana Ross and the Supremes and while not as well known as DREAMGIRLS it does feature the iconic song

"GIVING HIM SOMETHING HE CAN FEEL"

(jordan is expected to play the lead role of sparkle, while whitney is down to the the role of her mother)

RIHANNA @ O2 - so much to say.....

The first thing that struck me about Rihanna's show at the O2, was the 'demographic'.
The stands were almost entirely filled with 16 - 18 year old blonde, white girls. Even up here in the VIP BOX that was owned/catered to for STANDARD CHARTERED saw my industry film friend and I together with some 8-10 hugely anticipating teenagers most of whom were of the aforementioned demographic.

Rihanna slinks on stage having replaced her now almost signature red tresses for the bouncy curls of the younger Ri-Ri that bounded onto the scene and into our lives many years ago. Perhaps it was the channelling of this younger version of self that left us
'excited but not moved' throughout almost 2/3 of the show. Maybe, it had to do with what was a obviously mucked up sound system that left us wanting more but not in a good way. It wasn't till her rendition of SO HARD followed by the remaking of 'prince' pieces like 'glamourous life' which found her not just Banging away on drums but almost banging some life back into the performances.

Either way the earlier part of the show saw quite a few people leaving early to avoid the rush and crush of exiting the 02 later or making rather frequent trips to the bar.

BUT BOY DID THEY MISS OUT....

Up till then - I love you Ri-Ri - but I was steadfastly unswayed. Both emotionally and physically. Like so many fans loving the music, but not quite getting the energy that we could see flowing off her and eight '8' energetic dancers. It flowed..., but just didn't reach over to us.

By the time she started crooning 'I don't want do this anymore' one of my own personal favourites I was actually glad that fans on the tarmac had taken to singing loudly along. The sound system was lacking enough for me to sit and almost write this entire blog throughout her performance.

But the seated in a flowing yellow dress at stage right 'hate how much I love u' was easily the best rendition delivered. Followed later by 'California King Bed' and the stands EXPLODED and by the time the show was winding down on and the song 'Take a Bow' started to play..... well let's just say fans sang the entire first verse instead of her while the cameras panned a close up on her face, blushing and mouthing the words WOW over and over. She explained that we were all part of history that night, she had just scored a number 1 hit in the UK and as the Golden thunderstorm of 'Umbrella' closed the show it was easy to feel like you truly were part of history.

Still I have to say for myself, Like so many of the fans that left a little bit early, I felt a tiny bit let down. The show was GREAT!! But it was not spectacular. Blame it on the sound system or on it being the first show of the gig. But on the way home talk was not about what a 'WOW' show people had been too, but centred firmly on let's not miss that tube to get home people.

Speaking in a language of their own, in the lingo of their time; it stands as what has often been the trademark of artists over time that have been revered and remembered. Often mis-understood in their own time by their peers but a force to be reckoned with none-the-less.

This legion of lyrical 'super-heroes' deliver raw and unedited the thoughts of a generation

and the consciousness of their peers.

PHANTOM - 25 YEARS ON....

When I was invited to see the rather exclusive full dress rehearsal of the the Phantom of the Opera yesterday, I had in mind, "another musical". Now don't get me wrong I loooove musicals, more than most. But there are some productions that I somehow think, well you've run your time.

WELL THE PHANTOM HAS SHUT ME UP!!!

The costuming is incredible in that I think the detail work on those dresses can be seen even up in the nose bleed seats.
The staging unparalleled in that you are 'effortlessly' carried from location to location with the actors as they wend their way through, tunnels, along rooftops and of course within the Phantom's theatre itself.
And the performances.....

BREATHTAKING, from the very first notes, the performers tug at your heartstrings literally reminding you why this is one of Andrew Lloyd Webber's greatest accomplishments.

Now this isn't something I would normally be referring to on my blog,

but if you as I, are easily swayed by a truly haunting love story, and doubly so by animation on almost every level, then make sure you don't miss this film. And if not for any of that, then how can you NOT be absolutely floored by the music of Havana, reminiscent of the style of the Buena Vista Social Club and equally as touching.

Cuba, 1948. Chico is a young piano player with big dreams. Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and romantic desire unites them, but their journey - in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero - brings heartache and torment. From Havana to New York, Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas, two passionate individuals battle impossible odds to unite in music and love.

The story artfully weaves within it's education of the period the tale of one of the pioneers in Latin Jazz of that time, none other than Luciano "Chano" Pozo Gonzales. The hot-tempered Chano Pozo was the first in a long line of Latin percussionists to have performed with the legendary giant Dizzy Gillespie, the godfather of Latin jazz in the U.S.

He, Pozo was killed in a fight at a bar in Harlem, New York, at the age of 33, allegedly over an argument regarding the quality of a bag of marijuana he had bought from his assassin. He and many other great performers of the era are artfully woven into the soundtrack of the tale.

Though I had posted a few images on facebook I think I like others are not giving the credit due to the team of individuals that are working so hard to produce this popular alternative to the Notting Hill Carnival every year. The HACKNEY ONE CARNIVAL is an event that has been growing from strength to strength over the years and 2011 was no exception. For 'true masqueraders' it's a chance a week after Notting Hill and while still in the after-glow of the UK carnival season to have ONE LAST CHANCE to don a costume and PLAY A MAS.

That's the question that flooded my mind as I woke up this morning or rather this afternoon after sleepin' in for most of the day. Carnival IS really over. I spent most of the night last night at dinner with two friends talking about that sence of euphoria that comes over you in the middle of the celebration of Carnival, and Nottinghill is no exception; more so J'Ouvert.. It is truly leveling and humbling.

No matter who we are, whether a top end model just spotted on the street; or gracing the pages of a multimillion dollar fashion campaign, Carnival has the power and ability to make us all one. For that is what it does. The stevedore and the bank manager hold hands as they gyrate to pulsing rythms that lead the way to ensuring that at the heart of it all we KNOW what is right.

There are no isms or politricks, no dem and we, just us and if we can exist together in such joy and abandonment for ONE DAY...., why not longer. Why not for life.

It's Friday, the end of the week and the beginning of celebrations that will either see you headed out to Manchester Pride, or just generally getting out of the city for the Bank Holiday Weekend or if you is Trini to the Bone like me, making final preparations for the Nottinghill Carnival.

I had the pleasure of getting up close and personal when 3CANAL was on stage at CALO's launch at Alexander Palace

and had a whale of a time on stage with my band that I'm playing with this year SUNSHINE INTERNATIONAL ARTS.

I'll be taking in a healthy dose of ABIR this Sunday, and then all that will be left is to cross London's version of the big stage this Monday in the section entitled

'DREE VAY CHILE' Fitting isn't it.

So have a good weekend, whatever you get up to.

PLAY HARD, but PLAY SAFE.

I've been bringing you images of in and around LONDON,
to highlight everyday locations that we pass by everyday.

I didn't go into the riots 'purposely' hoping to capture images of people
at their worst. But I did have to go to West Croyden.
And though the riots were over, the aftermath definately falls into the
category of seeing things in a new light.

there have been riots and revelations, updates and upheavals,
trials and tribulations and through it all we stand firm..., so why not me?

It's been quite some time since I've blogged,
I think in a lotta ways my 'spirit' was broken.
But I am blessed with the most AMAZING friends and family
and I am learning to better appreciate my faith
and to look at the little miracles that occur around me everyday
rather than waiting for signs in floods, or people walking on water.
The real test in not to walk on water or fly in the sky but to walk on the earth.
Somehow I have managed to pull through it all.

Now I look forward to letting go of the past,
and looking towards the future.
Secure in the knowledge that even though I may NOT know what it [the future] will bring
that WHEREVER I end up, that is where 'I' will be.

'I' ..., that is myself...,
pure, unadulterated and with no additives or preservatives...,
'I' will be there.

Not 'I' , as I believe the would like me to be...
Not 'I' , as I think I should portray myself to the public...
Not 'I' , as someone skulking in corners and hiding in doorways...

I AS IN ME. AS I AM WITH NO APOLOGIES.

For at the end of the day...,
if we are true to ourselves,

Welcome to the album RASCONRAD iPHONEOGRAPHY.

The world is merely a reflection of how it is viewed. We can choose to see the positive or the negative. To revel in the possibilities or bemoan that which is not achievable.
from the point of view of a photographer, I believe firmly in the adage that "the best camera is the one you have with you". For no matter the instrument, much lies with the person that wields it.

These are images.., in an around, out and about; all taken with my 'iPHONE'.
The purpose is to make you look again; glance around a second time. Revisit the place you pass on a daily basis. Come to see the world through mine eyes.
Not that i think my view is all that important, I wish only to give a new narrative to the story.

Another London Fashion Week draws to a close, and with part of my team back in school and another off on vacation (we missed ya RYAN) running around to the shows wasn't as much fun as in the previous years. But as always a show NOT to be missed was ZIAD GHANEM, for fashion both ON and OFF stage.

Fans of the talented designer gathered for the 8pm show despite london weather at it's worst, and piled into the Freemason Hall venue in Covent Garden for yet another unique presentation for his A/W COUTURE 2011 collection.

Veils, ballerinas, full figured models, joker-inspired make-up, transexuals and a KICK ASS music selection all helped to make the show one of his best to date, But as always it was his immaculate sence of both drama and design that continued to weave magic in his creations, drawing increased numbers at each presentation he holds.

The "MAN O' DA MONTH"

series was started as a way to both discover and work with up and coming talent within the fashion industry. To give them a chance to broaden their skills and

in working with them to give back to the many models who constantly give of their time and energy by gracing my lens.

We started mid 2010 so we did only six (6) men. But now we're on a roll.

For 2011, we hope to do one each month so as to have the FULL year's compliment and also to give back to their female counter-parts with the launch of our

"well, I'm 19 and as you may or may not know I'm Bulgarian. Moved here to England when I was 11 and ended up playing football for READING ACADEMY.

Although I've done a little bit of acting this is really my first full-fledged foray into modelling.
So I'm really grateful the the chance and lessons passed onto me by RasConrad and his team.

At the moment I'm running my own car valeting business, and enjoying doing my own thing.

LOL, and yes the white mercedes in the shoot is one of my 'babies..."

Hot on the heels of my

contacted me to ask who was the male model featured in the video and also on the cover of this month's RasCONRAD presents.
