The first time Lucy and I visited D.C. was in 2005 on Memorial Day weekend.

We reached D.C. at 4pm and walked for hours. We finally gave up bit over midnight and decided to head back to the hotel.

On Saturday we woke up as early trying to do as much as our short visit would allow us.

I wanted to go visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. It was a priority for me because while in Army basic training one of my Drill Sergeants had been a Sentinel (3rd US Infantry Regiment) a small group of soldiers (less than 550) that since 1937 have guarded the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier 24/7.

Rolling Thunder

While walking we noticed the sound of thousands of Bikes or better said”Rolling Thunder“.

Rolling Thunder is made up of people who travel from all over the globe to D.C. to honor the fallen by riding there bikes. I was impressed by the logistics on how all of these bikers where coordinating their entrance into Arlington Cemetery.

We arrived into the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier when Rolling Thuder was having a ceremony laying down flowers in memory of the fallen. I was also very impressed with the Sentinel’s precision while patrolling the tomb.

One of our next stops was area where they had artists making representations of the fallen service members from Iraq and Afghanistan. I would have never guessed the emotions that would take over me that afternoon. As I walked over to commemorate those fallen soldiers by observing the art and getting to know more about them I realize how much in common I had with many of them.

More Pictures on My Flickr Set

I had just turned 25, almost 8 years after enlisting in the Army at the age of 17. I was lucky enough that I enlisted and my contract ended just when the Iraq and Afghanistan war needed more personnel.

When I look at the average age of the fallen they where mostly younger than me. I finally broke down into tears when I approached an area where I identified images of servicemen from Puerto Rico. Someone had been nice enough to place a flag over each picture. It really shocked me that an island of approximately 4 million people with limited rights as citizens had a higher proportion of flags than any other territory.

Looking into a few more pictures, I realized I had known one of the reservists who died in combat. I could not contain myself and it took me quite some time to stop crying (I confess that as I am writing just the memory of that moment made me drop a tear or two).

It could have been Me

I had never lost control of myself by crying in a public place as an adult in front of strangers (who where mostly sharing the same emotions as I was). There I was having a blast that weekend and enjoying my time, learning about history, eating well, drinking, and I realize that I could have been any of those service members who an artist painted in memory of them.

Out of gratitude from that moment on I make sure that every Memorial Day I do something for a service member or their families. I make it a purpose by commemorating the fallen.

Make it your Priority Too

So while you have your BBQ’s think of a few things you can do for those veterans that are still around us.

Here are a 3 quick and easy suggestions:

Donate to the Fisher House an organization helping military families in many ways.

Donate to Invisible People my Friend Mark Hovarth does a great job creating awareness of veterans who are homeless. Look at Jimmy’s and Paul’s Story.

Donate Your Airline Miles.

More info here http://fisherhouse.org/programs/hero-miles.

Most Importantly make some time to learn about those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

On my visit to SXSW (South by Southwest) I was able to meet Jade Kurian president of Latakoo a video service that makes creating and sharing video easier. They also made me create a short video based on my SXSW experience.

Creating Video Easier

The reason I stopped at the Latakoo booth on the Trade Show Floor was because I have huge issues creating video. I know I need to learn more about it and as I experiment I see even more need for improvements.

There are so many moving parts to creating online video include having hardware, software, an idea, connection, and lots of time on the part of uploading the video your sharing.

Video Glitch by Skype Recorder

Jade Kurian was nice enough to offer me an online video interview via skype which I attempted to record using Skype Recorder.

During the interview I learned a lot from Jade and the many benefits that Latakoo offers as an online video platform. A few days went by and when I went to edit the video I realized that the audio on my video was not recorded and my video image was still in one frame. Confirming my learning curve when it comes to creating video.

Since the video I attempted to record seems looks more like a monologue I rather focus on the three key benefits I see in Latakoo.

Time Saver

When you upload a video to Youtube and other services, Latakoo makes it quicker for you to bring any video online. So if you are covering an event for your blog or have a need to bring video up as quick as possible then Latakoo is a the platform you may want to use as your first option.

Security

With Latakoo you can also share videos with a group of specific people such as friends or family members. The main reason I set up a website with security for my daughter was because I did not want everyone having access to her photos and videos. If you are not in the business of building websites and want to have a secure platform, sharing videos on Latakoo can provide that for you.

Remote Collaboration

When you work online sometimes you want to share quality video with someone at another location. With most platforms I know of there are too many steps in the process.

I can also take care of clients in England, Mexico, and all over the United States while I enjoy living in the tropics in Puerto Rico.

Latakoo does great for collaboration when sharing a file of videos remote users and he/she can even edit and polish the video. Latakoo has multiple clients in the Journalism field that benefit greatly from this service.

I want to thank Jade Kurian for the time she gave me helping me understand Latakoo and watch this video that she created on some great tips on shooting video for the iPhone.

Being a fan of music I tend to write posts on my favorite artists. I enjoy listening to different types of music and there is nothing I enjoy more than finding new talent and voices I can listen to.

Thanks to the efforts of my friends at Frecuencias Alternas and Puerto Rico Indie, which consistently help me, curate my musical playlists on Spotify (Special thanks to Pepe Pesante for giving me a quick 101 on Spotify months ago). By reading their blog and listening to the weekly Frecuencias Alternas Radio show I am able to sit back at least once a week and get their point of view on the latest in Indie music.

Google + Found Noah’s Music

More than a week ago I was looking at Google + and saw someone share Noah Guthrie’s video where he played and sang his own version of ” I’m Sexy and I know it”.

I like the original version by LMFAO but listening to Noah’s version made me enjoy it even more. Listening to him talk at the beginning of the video I got the feeling that it was some type of parody. When I heard him start singing I had to replay the video multiple times because his voice completely surprised me.

I searched for @only1noah on twitter and decided that I would ask him where I could support his music. I also subscribed to his YouTube channel in which I found the following video where Noah is thanking everyone that made the video go Viral.

Leveraging the Eco System

By leveraging the power of the Online Eco System, Noah published this video where he is thanking his fans. He also does a great job at updating us on what is next and what we should expect from him. Mentioning an online concert on May 29th, 2012 where he will be playing online so his fans, which can be anywhere, listen in and support his efforts by donating or better said tipping him.

Looking at how Noah has shared his talent and is managing his presence online I feel many of us can learn from Noah. If you are a musician and are trying to make it online there is even more reason to have Noah on your radar.

As I started reading Small Town Rules from @BeckyMcCray I have to say that the start of the book relates a lot with what Noah and what many of us are doing today to compete in highly competitive industries.

I will go into more detail once I finish the book and create a more formal review on the book.

If you enjoyed Noah’s work, download his song for free but even better yet try to support him with a small donation. Every dollar counts!

Controlling expenses is something I always need to get better at. I remember buying my first palm pilot, one of the first apps I added was to help me track my expenses. I have bought a variety of software to help me keep track of my finances and more importantly my spending. My biggest problem is finding one I can stick with and built to my needs.

The Solution

My company and I recently entered into a partnership with ML Studios to use our platforms and what we do with clients to enhance receiptLoader’s online presence. Receiptloader is a mobile application that saves an image of a receipt and helps you manage your receipts by storing them online and creating reports.

Pablo and Francisco created this neat application that saves time when it comes to tracking where you are spending your money. All you have to do is take a picture of the receipt, upload the image, and the application does the rest.

When I first used Microsoft Money in the late 90′s, my biggest issue was losing track of how much I spent. The gap of time in between my purchases and when I recorded the purchases on the software was so big I would lose track of some expenses.

Losing items

I also have a bad habit of losing items. I can’t count the times I have had to pay a full day of parking (when I was barely at the spot for an hour) because I lost my parking stub. The same happens to many receipts they either end up in my car or washed with my pants. Losing a receipt has multiple consequences.

Less Headaches while saving time

Having the time to sit down and track my receipts is something I never have. By taking a picture of the receipt with receiptloader at the moment of the purchase, this task becomes simple and quick. By storing my receipt online I can later go in and check how much I spent in a period of time given that receiptloader creates multiple reports for me.

A Big Favor

It would be a great favor for you to try receiptloader for 30 days.

The links below are links with a 30 day free trial so you can try with no commitment.

iPhone (IOS)

AnDroid

My objective right now would be to get feedback from someone like you with possibly a background different to mine.

Can you help me spread the word and look for ways to make receiptloader an app you would like to add to your phone?

Guest Post: Luis offered to share his knowledge on creation of videos and a better way to light a greenscreen. Thanks to his willingness to share his knowledge, Luis offered to write a guest posts for my blog.

Here is a more advanced and complete tutorial on how to use proper lighting for a video for GreenScreen! ^Raúl

Following up the blog post “Basic Greenscreen Effect”, in which I commented and made some recomendations on lighting the greenscreen. Being a regular contributor at Videomaker Forums and my years of experience (using trial and error) inspired me to make some recommendations.

I’m honored to share in this post what I learned on how to light a greenscreen a la guerrilla style including a video I made.

With this video I won a YouTube competition by TubeTape.com. I won two soft boxes lights (valued around $795). This video was recorded in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and somewhere in the Sahara Desert.

Learning to light a greenscreen without a professional lighting kit can be a challenge for any videographer. You need to come up with ingenuous ideas, like using some cardboard and aluminum foil to make a reflector or anything you can find in your house that produces light.

I like to call these ingenious videographers Vidiots because sometimes we (I’m included) use things that are not supposed to be for a particular use. In our minds if we have a lamp that produces usable light then why not use it to light our green screen set.

Who said that you can’t use aluminum foil and some cardboard to make reflectors?
I have learned a couple of useful things when lighting greenscreens a la guerrilla style that I will share in this post. The single most important thing is lighting the greenscreen as evenly as possible (this applies to both professional lighting and guerrilla equipment). If you don’t do this you will get shadows on some parts of the greenscreen making the chroma keying process in post production more difficult.

Always light your green screen as evenly as possible

Now that you know what you need to do, let’s look at some guerrilla light alternatives you can use. I bought a 1200 Watts work light from the local hardware store for around $60, three clamp lights for around $8 each and three 120 W indoor flood lights for around $3 each. Since the work light generates so much light from one spot I needed a reflector, which I made with some cardboard and aluminum foil.

This light generates so much heat that I added a fan to improve the talent experience (mostly me).
In the picture above you can see a more pro light mounted on a light stand, which I use as a backlight. These lights are supposed to be used to light stages so they are less than ideal for greenscreen lighting purposes and they get very hot. As a backlight it came up pretty good because the purpose of the backlight is to separate the talent from the background, in this case, separate the talent from the greenscreen. Basically you need at least 4 lights to light a greenscreen set; two for the greenscreen itself, one as the backlight and the other one to light your talent. In the pictures I’m showing in this post I use 5 lights (having two lights on the talent)

It’s better to have more lights than having a few when it comes to greenscreen. A four light setup is ideal and when you’re doing it a la guerrilla style you can light it without breaking your bank account. Two things you need to be careful with:

1. Connecting your lights and
2. Not getting burned by your lights (especially with the work lights).

Connect your lights to different plugs around your studio (or garage) and always wear gloves when working with the lights. If you light your greenscreen as evenly as possible you will get good results using any type of light. One last thing, if you have a large greenscreen and you are recording a close up shot, you really don’t need to light all of it. Just light the part your camera is capturing and use fewer lights for it.
Enjoy lighting your greenscreen a la guerrilla style.

A little more than a month ago I did not know what a Pecha Kucha was. For some strange reason the word Pecha Kucha has been popping up everywhere even in the recent book I am reading on Presentation Zen: Simple Ideas on Presentation Design and Delivery recommended in Guy Kawasaki’s book Enchantment.

Thanks to Angiemille and Dana Montenegro two young entrepreneurs investing in the well being of our Puerto Rico I had the opportunity yesterday to understand and be part of a Pecha Kucha event.

What is a Pecha Kucha?

When Angie mentioned Pecha Kucha a few weeks ago while attended the “A Jugar en Familia event” one of her non-for-profit events. I did some research and found out its main purpose which was to make Architects become more efficient in presenting ideas.

With 20 slides and 20 seconds for each slide giving an overall time of 6 minutes and 40 seconds each presenter needs to share their idea in a brief but complete way. Giving the opportunity for many others to share their ideas at one event.

I also learned from Angie that the Japanese word translates into Chit Chat.

My First Pecha Kucha

Dana Montenegro from SeriouslyCreative started of the night and focused his presentation on solving problems by experiencing them from the frontlines. Dana’s message was geared towards how on many occasions an attempt to solve problems is done from a cubicle and even when no solution is found they resist visiting the frontlines.

After Dana’s Pecha Kucha Mr. Bartolomé Gamundi took the floor. A published author who spoke about having Puerto Ricans become an Owners Society.

My Key takeaway from his Pecha Kucha was how we need to become less dependent of the U.S. even if it means receiving less federal fund in areas where the U.S. is failing. He made his case on how the No Child Left behind in education is imposed on us as a Colony making our education system even weaker.

I was very impressed by all the speakers but the Uberrican Pecha Kucha given by Pedro Ortiz from MindOven had many of my interested mixed into the presentation. Pedro spoke about how by presenting positive values you can trigger positive actions. He gave the example of the Ninety Nine which where superheroes created with values tied to the Koran and the Muslim religion and lifestyle.

I also enjoyed a very fun slide which expressed how locally so many people use social media to release negative thoughts instead of leveraging for social good.

That particular slide had scene of Death Wish (one of my dad’s favorite movies), strangely enough when I got home Death Wish 2 was being played on TV.

Ramphis Castro from Taino App closed the night by sharing his message of how we need to start creating more to reach our dreams and goals. He expressed on how he enters his own distortion field where he sets his mind into executing and idea and learns along the way while he reaches the goal.

The individuals who presented had a common goal of improving the well being of Puerto Rico by finding solutions instead of just identifying problems.

I am not a fan of sitting in presentations because in most occasions the presenters are not sharing information that is of value to me. In this case I sat and listened trying to absorb and internalize the many ideas these 4 gentleman had to share.

I have to Congratulate Dana,Bartolomé, Pedro, and Ramphis for making those 4 presentations look like it was something very easy to do.

My thanks to Angiemille and Dana for the invite it was a very pleasant evening where I felt like our Island has not lost its enchantment yet.

I shared a few more pictures of the event on Flickr!

I am really enjoying this weekend. The same reason I did not create a long post for Mother’s day. I wanted to make sure that I took the time to relax and get many things out of the way so Today Sunday I could spend time with Mom, Grandma, Lucy, and Lucy’s Family.

I also wanted to take the opportunity to share Rick’s Spanish Version of Daddyknows which we will be publishing soon in both languages on Papaheroes.com.

I hope you all have an awesome weekend and spend time with your love ones!

A big hug to all the MOM’s especially Mine, Lucilla, Myriam Gonzalez (my spiritual mom and Daniela’s Godmother), Grandma Lydia, and Grandma America (Rest In Peace)!

I love taking experimenting with new things and taking risks. Like every other person when I take a risk of doing something new, I know there is a probability of failing. However that does not stop me from trying out new things.

The older I get the more I realize that to achieve results you have to attempt things and get them running. On some occasions given lack of resources you might not have an option but too attempt it yourself. The reality is that taken this attitude will also bring many failures that will eventually take you to bigger and successful projects.

Analysis Paralysis

I see many people like you and me that could accomplish great things if they at least started things and later tweaked it along the way. A mistake I made when I set up my first project, as a small business owner in 2008 was the excessive planning I did without finding the proper balance on the execution side. I attempted to run my small company as the companies I consulted and worked for. I analyzed deeply every possibly situation which resulted in delaying the process where I could start recovering the resources I had invested.

Identifying Opportunities

Once I see an opportunity I go after it. Now research and analysis consists of trying to see how I can get to where I need to be with the least resources so I can start a project.

My Latest Experiments

Photography

About a month ago I had the opportunity to spend time with Alan Weinkrantz. While he was taking Pictures in Old San Juan he gave shared some great advice on why I should take my own pictures and not use Creative Commons.

For the past month I have spend a considerable amount of time using Instagram and my Point and Shoot Camera (Ricoh CX2 ← Affiliate Link) capturing images which I can use in my blog posts, presentation, and other projects. Alan helped me understand that capturing images enhances the experience of sharing my story.

Creating Video

The other day I had the privilege to learn a few things from Bianca Estrada (@biancaest) who creates some really neat videos for Payasa Agapita. Bianca and her husband Fernando took their time and drove for 2+ hours to my house. We quickly setup a green screen to create a tutorial on how easy it could be done if you just wanted to have fun. It was a neat learning experience because when we saw the end product we realized we have many things we need to improve upon.

For me it was a win situation because I saw the unique creative process Bianca and her husband Fernando use to create a videos like the one below.

Don’t Let the Experts Say You can’t do it.

I can sit here and de-construct the many glitches I found on the video I did with Bianca and Fernando and worry about how we did not get the results we expected. I rather take a different approach and look at what I gained when I published the video below when others might think we should have not shared it.

Listen to Experts that Encourage You

When it comes to video I love listening and learning from my friend Steve Garfield back in 2010 he convinced me that to create video all I needed to do was have a device that could capture video. He also wrote Get Seen: Online Video Secrets to Building Your Business ( ← Amazon Affiliate Link), I consider it a manual towards creating online video. Overall Steve does a great job at sharing his knowledge on creating videos with others.

Thanks to the glitches the video above had we received constructive criticism from someone who had some great suggestions on how we could improve our Green Screen effects video. He also accepted to create a more advanced tutorial which will be publishing as a guest post in a day or two so feel free to subscribe to my blog and receive it directly via email.

Use the Experts when You Can

My previous message of not listening to the experts does not mean you should not use them. I am a fan of hiring experts for more professional matters and things I don’t feel capable of doing. To create my logos and creative images on my website I use Rick Lipsett. When I wanted to get a new Avatar I hired my high school friend and professional photographer Cesar Santiago. Even to Cut the Grass I hire landscapers because they do a better and quicker job at it.

Maybe one day I might be able to hire the expertise of Tommy Walker from Inside the Mind to create the storyline and edit my videos or my friend Alfredo Richner from Puerto Rico Indie to shoot the video locally. Until I can afford it I will have to give it a try on my own.

I believe success is doing the things you like to do and staying away from having to do those that you don’t like.

I rather try something and fail. By not trying it you keep yourself away from the experience or opportunity to learn and improve it.

So do me a favor try something new this week?

Do something that might be out of your comfort zone?

Once you accomplish it share with those around you and listen to their feedback?

Are you up for the challenge?

There are two key things that are embedded in my nature being thankful when someone does the smallest thing for me. The second one is being very transparent with my thoughts and sharing my opinion with everyone in a healthy way.

Although some might think my transparency can hinder my business goals I try to believe the opposite. For this reason I try to focus on the part of being grateful for the opportunities and blessings I receive.

A few days ago I referred someone to a tool I love using for many of my small business tasks. I see it as a dashboard toward integrating:

My sales efforts (for CIMA IT Solutions Corp. & Human Business Wo

Invoicing – syncs with Freshbooks (← Affiliate Link)

Backup of Contacts (Syncs with Gmail Contacts)

Incoming Requests via our multiple online efforts.

Keeps track of my communications with clients, partners, and helps me track conversations online.

Makes Life Easier

In a simple phrase Batchbook allows me to have a bit of sanity and makes my life easier.

Although I am a small business owner I am trying to keep track of things that happen on Papaheroes.com, Veglatino.com, my company, HBW, this blog, and the many other efforts I am a part off.

Batchbook is small enough for me to use but robust enough that I can cover all my bases.

But overall I like dealing with companies that care about me and with this token of appreciation I know they care about me as a customer.

Are you grateful when other people open doors for you?

What action do you take to let them know you are thankful?

Sometimes a simple handwritten note can go a long way!

By the way thank you for reading this post and thank you Batchblue for showing you care!

This guest post was inspired when Bianca Estrada (@biancaest) shared with me what they had created for the videos @PayasaAgapita & Che Che are creating. We set up a time on a saturday evening and we quickly set up the green screen at my office. The lighting was not the most appropriate so feel free to blame me with the effect on the video.

Here is Bianca’s guest post and explanation ^Raúl

Creating a video using green screen is very easy, and you can achieve it with a very low budget.

I manage Payasa Agapita’s projects and events. I like to innovate and create funny skits using technology. Our inspiration to use a Green Screen emerged from creating videos for Payasa Agapita.

Why Use a Green Screen?

Making videos is fun, but each time we create a skit for a video, so many ideas come to mind which translates into different scenery. Recreating scenery each time we film is something difficult to achieve on a very low budget. At the same time, I do not want to limit the space or environment to one place because my wish is that each video offers something completely different.

iMovie

I use iMovie for video editing. This software is included in my Apple computer and I didn’t have the intentions of using another software without verifying what iMovie could do. And yes, iMovie works with Green Screen without installing anything else. Thank you, Steve Jobs!

Items you will need

- Any video camera: With capability of transferring files to your computer. Avoid using VHS, please!

- Neon green fabric: You can find it at any fabric store. You don’t need a specific green, just try to get it as close to the color as the one in the picture.

- Good-looking actors: Ok, if you are not as lucky then any person can participate

- Mac computer with iMovie ’11: If you are using a past version, the instructions may be a little different for you.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Hang up the fabric and try to avoid light reflecting in the back of the green screen. You can hold it with tape depending where you will be using it. I held our green screen fabric to the wall with tape. Don’t worry about folding marks; it won’t be noticed in the final work. Just avoid hard shades.

Regarding clothes, actors should not wear green. (editor’s note: or anything close to Green as I did in our intro video) If so, you will have problems during the editing process

Having said that… Let’s film!

Thanks to Artifex creation for the background picture.

Editing and Final Product

As I said previously, these instructions respond to iMovie ’11. At iMovie, click iMovie > Preferences and then click on “Show Advanced Tools”. That allows more functions within the software.

1. Look for the picture that will substitute the green screen. I recommend a picture with no people because when you insert the clip, it will look strange that some people move and others (the ones at the pic) are frozen. It can be a park, a lounge, a beach, or anything you might need.

2. Place the picture at the video-editing space of the software. Give it more time than the overall clip duration.

3. Drag the green screen clip and drop over the picture, at the beginning of it. It will show you some options and you will select “Green Screen”.

The green screen effect is done and you can see it. Later you can modify the beginning and end, include other things in your video or crop something. But regarding the green screen effect, it is done.

Hope you have fun creating videos at “different places”. Included is a video with Payasa Agapita and Che Che that was filmed using green screen.
