Key Business Partners interviews Dr. Rose

Teresa Morrow of Key Business Partners, LLC (a Tampa firm that promotes upcoming authors) interviewed Dr. Rose about her latest publications, her inspirations, her tips for new authors, and more. Read the full article at KBP's site.

Q: Why did you choose to write this book?

A: I have come to understand that every food choice we make is going to have an impact on our long term health and longevity. Most physicians receive little to no training in nutrition and I think our country has to make some crucial changes in nutritional and lifestyle. We are something like #25 overall in the “first world” or highly developed countries when it comes to health and that’s pretty tragic. Raw Fusion is a manageable lifestyle, not a diet or fad.

Q: What tips would you offer beginning writers to help them?

A: What helps me enormously is to have a chapter outline – even if this evolves or changes over time. If you are writing non-fiction, create an index card file labeled with the chapters and subheadings so you can file notes and quotes. OR, you can create a master file on the computer and cut and paste to make it smoother.

Q: What is one social media tip you have to share with others?

A: People seem to respond to posts about ideas that can help them improve their lives. Something they can apply “in the moment.” I am sometimes impacted by reading a quote from a famous personage, but I’d rather read some of your own wisdom, that comes from your heart or life experience. And avoid posting political and/or religious points of view as that’s a turn off to many people.

Q: What is in the works for you going into 2011?

A: I am working on Volume 3 of the Raw Fusion Living series that will delve more into the lifestyle aspects as well as case studies. I do have some notes down for a historical, metaphysical novel that I might make some progress on this year – honestly, until I write something like that, it will be hard to consider myself a "real" writer.” (lol)

Christmas Croquettes

These taste like stuffing and make much better food combining!

1 ½ cup walnuts soaked overnight, rinsed

1 ½ cup almonds soaked overnight, rinsed

2-3 TB. chopped poultry herbs (thyme, sage, rosemary)

2 stalks of celery finely diced

½ tsp. cumin

2-4 TB. of water or vegetable broth

2-3 scallions chopped

Sea salt to taste

Dash or two of black pepper

Directions: Combine first 5 ingredients in food processor with "S" blade and mix, adding water or stock as needed to moisten. Stir in scallions. Form oblong shapes and dehydrate on Teflex or parchment paper in dehydrator for 2 hours at 145 degrees. Then lower to 115 degrees until nicely browned on outside, but still moist on inside. Total dehydration time is about 4-5 hours max.If you don't have a dehydrator, you can try these out in a metal or glass pan lined with parchment paper. Place in oven at lowest temperature and leave door slightly open. When outside is browned, they are ready.

Options: Top with Cream of Mushroom Soup.

LJ's 6 Tips to Avoid Overating this Holiday

Have a couple of pieces of fruit about an hour before the main meal.

Drink a glass of water or seltzer one half hour before your meal – if at all possible avoid drinking liquid with your meals as it interferes with digestion.

Food combining is key – if you really crave some meat, poultry or fish, have it with only salad and veggies but no starch (rice, stuffing, potatoes corn, beets). If you prefer the starch, mix that with green veggies and salad. Your stomach will thank you – you will avoid that bloated feeling and not have to loosen your pants! Next meal you can switch it out and enjoy what you "denied" yourself before.

After dinner have a cup of hot herb tea instead of diving right into dessert. Try peppermint, chamomile or lavender teas, which will relax you and help digest your meal more easily.

Take a break! Go out and get some air – maybe play with the kids or take a walk around the neighborhood before dessert. This gives the main meal a chance to settle and gets you up and moving (and bonding)!

Having some dessert is fine as long as you wait about an hour after your meal. Start with a small portion and enjoy it with a second cup of herb tea.

This article first appeared in our newsletter.
"Real Men" Like Raw!

A few weeks ago, my husband told me that a few of his hockey buddies had expressed some curiosity about the raw foods diet. Jeff, in his late 50’s, has been playing pick-up three times a week for over 5 years with a group of die-hard ice hockey enthusiasts, many of which played in college or in semi-professional and professional capacity. A core group of his buddies usually go out to lunch afterwards, where the fare is not the healthiest (i.e. chicken wings and beer) but the subject of nutrition and losing weight are often discussed.

Since Jeff has participated in a portion of my raw foods journey, by drinking green smoothies most mornings and replacing some of his former fattening snacks with raw alternatives, he’s become quite the advocate for raw snacks. He’s brought up to his buddies a few times about how good they taste and how much better they make him feel. Most of them were very incredulous that something “good for you” could taste good; one of them even said that while he was intrigued about raw foods, he was “afraid to taste them.” (I’ve gotten that reaction in my Raw Foods 101 classes about green smoothies, but the reaction is always an amazed “YUM!”)

The next time they played I prepared little baggies for them with a variety of raw and raw fusion snacks, including my “Maple-Cinnamon Walnuts,” “Cheezy Chili Kale Chips” (pictured,) and onion crackers, which everyone swears taste just like French fried onions. According to Jeff, they “wolfed” them down and have remarked several times since then how good they were and when can they get more! They did not expect to like them and that’s what makes this especially gratifying.

Raw Fusion is about finding ways to improve your overall eating habits; By substituting for snacks that are high in toxic sweeteners, loaded with unhealthy fat, salt and preservatives, you are relieving your body of the huge burden of having to digest and process those substances. You take in more nutrition (flavored and dehydrated kale snacks are loaded with vitamins and minerals) and lose weight naturally. Sounds like a win-win situation to me!

LindaJoy Rose, Ph.D. is a raw foods chef and educator, author and international expert on subconscious dynamics and the power of suggestion. She is the pioneer of the Raw Fusion movement, marrying raw and cooked foods in fun, practical and attainable ways.
