The Invisible Front
Also known as "The Unknown War."
The Armed anti-Soviet resistance in Lithuania 1944 to 1953.
Few know that there was such a war, a War waged against the Super Power. The biggest such armed resistance in Europe after WW II - and few knew.

February 16, 1918 Lithuania regained its independence only to lose it to the Soviets in 1944. A bitter war was fought against the Soviets 1944 to 1953 - Lithuania re established its Independence once again in 1991. The first Soviet Republic to walk out as the USSR began to crumbled.
However, they have adopted, taken names of celebrates, like Vytautas for Vytautas the Great who was responsible to the expanse of The Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Or, taking other names of Grand Dukes Like Gediminas andAlgirdas.

Then additional names spun off like Vytas, Vyte [f] and more as you will see at
http://www.thelithuanians.com/names/name22v.html#Section3

There are other names that have a rich ancient history. Remember, before there were surnames [last names] their were only first names. So, in a village, people wanted to be unique and parents gave children different names. This is how first names developed.
Take a look at over 3,500 I put together some years ago.
http://www.thelithuanians.com/names/name.html

The Etymology of VYTAUTAS
http://www.thelithuanians.com/names/name2v.html

All these are accepted genuine Lithuanian first names. Throughout Lithuanian history names developed. Read the brief history in the right hand column of the above link.

It was the first names that also helped in the development of last names of which there now over 50,000 names.

There is a lot more on names that you can read about on our website
LIBRARY tab
FIRST NAMES
http://thelithuanians.com/bookthelithuanians/node10.html

Then follow the link to
SURNAMES

So, you see name development is not a new phenomenon. Lithuanians have been at it for 4, 000 to 5,000 years, ethnic names being the oldest. Read some more.

You will notice that there have been periods when new names developed, like after Lithuania adopted Christianity.

Now, since the re establishment of Independence [and just prior] another period of new names is beginning, but these names have not yet established their place yet.

Interesting story about my Uncle Juozas. He was born in Siberia where Grandfather, Grandmother and my Aunt were exiled to. He is 8 years younger than me. In 1958 they all came to Lithuania.

Grandfather instilled a tremendous amount of Patriotism in all his children.

Uncle Juozas named his children, Vesta, Vytis and Laisvis [boys are twins]. Daring names in Soviet times.

Vytis after Vytautas, of the symbol of Lithuanian Freedom - you may notice the Vytis in several places on the website - Grey chevron with Vytautas the Great on a Stallion. Vytautas defeated the Teutonic Knights and gave the Russians a real scare, the first one.

Laisvis name is really in your face to the Soviets. Laisve means Freedom.

Vesta name from ancient Rome, a fire goddess.

This tells you much about two quiet unassuming men, very characteristic of many Lithuanians.

However, there are exceptions and I may fall in the extrovert area. But, ...

But this may give you a capsule history of Lithuanian First Names.
Oh, I also put up a YouTube video on Lithuanian First Names.
Or are You Being Lulled to..

This is part of a string I wrote - you may want to take a few minute, invest as few minutes and give some thought to its contents. My experiences started in Europe in 1942, later as a refugee fleeing the advance of Communism and am an ardent student of History - History was taught in school when I attended Grammar School and High School in the US before the Liberals switched to "Social Studies." Plus, I continued studying History and found that Western Civilization History taught in schools missed or misstated about 1/3 of actual History in the Medieval Ages because it was slanted by the historians to their National and ethnic View. This is one reason for this post - I see History repeating itself and fear that even some of the defenders may be lulled into being defenseless. This is a cautionary personal view.

Have you studied History - between 1918 and 1948? Are you aware of that period and History in General? Have you looked into the backgrounds of politicians, where they get their values - IE parents and circle of friends etc? Do you listen to what people say and actually do? Do you hold them accountable for their actions? There are about 52,000,000 in this country from one single dominant base [not political party] that will follow their immediate leadership over a cliff, or drive into a ditch ever deeper without questioning what is going on wearing blinders and earmuffs. These may be very self centered individuals that only care about themselves and do not give a hoot about the poor or the struggling middle income.

They care about themselves the "Middle Class" - think about all this. We the 100% live in a classless society. Look up what the Middle Class purports to be in a classless society. Then think about the division being talked about. Time to take off the earmuffs, the blinders and open the eyes to what has been going on.

Do we really want more of the same and much much worse? The judges will be there this year to cast their decision. Could be one of the last judgements before we lose even more, or will their be a revival to our former aspirations for our children and grandchildren. Who will take the blame or the credit for the direction we go.
_____________

Fearless Leader - has risen and is taking us down - this is the entire message of "History." People are deaf, dumb and blind when it come to "cleverness" - just like the snake oil salesman - beware of what is being sold start at the top of this string again "Have you studied History - between 1918 and 1948?" I think some may miss the message. Many have done this - blind followers of the "Pied Piper." History is repeating itself but worse - and "It is right in the open" and some just don't see it, just don't get it. Remember "Beware of False Prophets?" Well we have a boat load - look around. Stop, Look and Listen" - the train has to be stopped! I'm talking about the impact on the forest not a few blades of grass.
Importance of Lithuanian Language and History - brief
The importance of the Lithuanian Language and a brief History of Lithuania.Lithuanian history has been assumed by others and or co mingled with theirs.May this short effort inspire interest into giving Lithuania credit for all its accomplishments during Medieval History and during History in general. There are many "Unknowns" about these people and the Nation, their valiant efforts toward survival despite the odds.

Study an accurate rendition of the course of events that took place during one of the most important times in the history of man. The Lithuanians left an honorable footprint and now continue once again as an independent Free Country -
My apologies for a huge mistake I made about Algimantas Jomantas.
He was born in August 1934 and passed away on Lithuania's Independence day February 16, 2004.

Lithuania gained its Independence on February 16, 1918 by proclaiming it, as it did again on March 11, 1990. Lithuania was the first of the Soviet Union republics [?] that declared Independence as the Union dissolved.

Independence was lost in 1795 and once again in June of 1940.

I mention this because ALGIMANTAS JOMANTAS's movie LITHUANIA 1993 depicts how Lithuania looked in 1993.

Algimantas could draw comparisons to when he was a child of 10 in 1944 and fifty years later.

This movie, LITHUANIA 1993, deserves being watched for this reason - his visual portrait and his personal comments. It is also worth watching to see how much has changed under an Independent Lithuania and how quickly the Lithuanians wanted to remove old oppressive symbols, rebuild and renovate their treasured buildings, monuments, churches, etc. Also, to construct new modern structures, hotels, commercial buildings, malls, airports, seaport and infrastructure in general.

SEE LITHUANIA 1993 again or if you haven't - save the link to return to see it On Demand and forward it to Friends - share it. If you don't have time, make time or see it in installements.
There is so little worth watching. This is more than worth watching. Its a MUST SEE.
http://raymondbalta.blogspot.com/2012/01/lithuania-1993-revised.html
He gave me his recordings on VHS tapes in 2001 and mentioned to me that Maybe "Some Day" we will be able to see these on the Internet to show a slice of life in Lithuania during different time periods.
I converted these VHS tapes to a viewable format. The results are the same quality as the original.

Algimantas passed away in 2003, but his wish finally came true. The music you hear in the background is traditional Lithuanian folk music going back hundreds of years in some cases and that of Virgis Stakenas, part of Lithuanian history.
I converted these VHS tapes to a viewable format. The results are the same quality as the original. But the Historical value is there as a moment in time.

Algimantas passed away in 2003, but his wish finally came true. Most of the music you hear faintly in the background is of recorded Lithuanian folk music and piano playing, incidental to his work. Please accept this for its historical value.
'The Professor' is a man who lives by his own personal version of the Ten Commandments. After miraculously surviving imprisonment in a Nazi concentration camp through a bit of ironic fate, he writes a memoir of his life, which becomes the target of the Soviet censors.
The so-called "freedom" of Communism becomes just as oppressive as the German concentration camp.
I turned two on July 1, 1944. On July 4, 1944 my Mother,
my Father and I left Lithuania as the Soviets were about to invade Lithuania.

We fled West to seek Freedom and Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

A few months later [picture] we arrived in Salzburg, Austria.
My Mom, Uncle Juozas, cousins Bruno 13, Irvis and Ziga 2 and me 2 are pictured. Uncle Juozas took his family to Australia much earlier.
Then in October 1948, we emigrated to the United States.
We arrived in New York City on October 30, 1948 and went on to Boston by train.

The next day we came to our final destination, West Bridgewater.
As Uncle John made his last turn on Spring Street,
I noticed a large water tower to my right and gasped,
"and now we are in America."

It wasn't until that moment, almost three day's after coming to the United States,
that the feeling of being FREE and safe hit me.

I was now six years of age.

Sixty nine years later after leaving Lithuania and I still get this wonderful feeling on July 4, February 16, and other days when celebrating Independence.

Freedom is not FREE - "and we are still in America." How Lucky am I.

Let Freedom Ring Here from Sea to Shining Sea and everywhere.
If it stops ringing Here, it will stop everywhere.
