Algimantas Jomantas - Lithuania 1993

My apologies for a huge mistake I made about Algimantas Jomantas.
He was born in August 1934 and passed away on Lithuania's Independence day February 16, 2004.

Lithuania gained its Independence on February 16, 1918 by proclaiming it, as it did again on March 11, 1990. Lithuania was the first of the Soviet Union republics [?] that declared Independence as the Union dissolved.

Independence was lost in 1795 and once again in June of 1940.

I mention this because ALGIMANTAS JOMANTAS's movie LITHUANIA 1993 depicts how Lithuania looked in 1993.

Algimantas could draw comparisons to when he was a child of 10 in 1944 and fifty years later.

This movie, LITHUANIA 1993, deserves being watched for this reason - his visual portrait and his personal comments. It is also worth watching to see how much has changed under an Independent Lithuania and how quickly the Lithuanians wanted to remove old oppressive symbols, rebuild and renovate their treasured buildings, monuments, churches, etc. Also, to construct new modern structures, hotels, commercial buildings, malls, airports, seaport and infrastructure in general.

Lithuania 1993 A documentary as filmed by Algimantas Jomantas (1934 - 2/16/2004) of Geelong, Australia - Born in Lithuania - portrays Lietuva just after re establishment of Independence. He walks through various cities, towns, and notable places - Historical monuments that were left in disrepair.

He gave me his recordings on VHS tapes in 2001 and mentioned to me that Maybe "Some Day" we will be able to see these on the Internet to show a slice of life in Lithuania during different time periods.
I converted these VHS tapes to a viewable format. The results are the same quality as the original.

Algimantas passed away in 2003, but his wish finally came true. The music you hear in the background is traditional Lithuanian folk music going back hundreds of years in some cases and that of Virgis Stakenas, part of Lithuanian history.

I turned two on July 1, 1944. On July 4, 1944 my Mother,
my Father and I left Lithuania as the Soviets were about to invade Lithuania.

We fled West to seek Freedom and Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

A few months later [picture] we arrived in Salzburg, Austria.
My Mom, Uncle Juozas, cousins Bruno 13, Irvis and Ziga 2 and me 2 are pictured. Uncle Juozas took his family to Australia much earlier.
Then in October 1948, we emigrated to the United States.
We arrived in New York City on October 30, 1948 and went on to Boston by train.

The next day we came to our final destination, West Bridgewater.
As Uncle John made his last turn on Spring Street,
I noticed a large water tower to my right and gasped,
"and now we are in America."

It wasn't until that moment, almost three day's after coming to the United States,
that the feeling of being FREE and safe hit me.

I was now six years of age.

Sixty nine years later after leaving Lithuania and I still get this wonderful feeling on July 4, February 16, and other days when celebrating Independence.

Freedom is not FREE - "and we are still in America." How Lucky am I.

Let Freedom Ring Here from Sea to Shining Sea and everywhere.
If it stops ringing Here, it will stop everywhere.

The13th of January Defenders of Fredom Day Documentary

On 13th of January 1991, unarmed Lithuania struggled for its right to be a free, independent and democratic country. 14 people were killed, about 1000 were injured as the Soviet occupation army and the KGB attempted to overthrow the legitimate government of the country and to seize the Lithuanian national radio and television building, the TV tower and publishing houses. The people of Lithuania demonstrated their inner strength, they defeated the Soviet aggression and defended their freedom in the spirit of truth and love.
In 2012 we commemorate the 21th anniversary of this brutal crime committed by the Soviet regime and the 21th anniversary of non-violent resistance in defence of freedom.

This documentary is dedicated to the 21th anniversary of the tragic events. The witnesses of the events of those days share their memories in the film which also presents a unique material from the archives. Subtitles are added in English.

The documentary was made by film and video studio "A Propos" in 2001. Film directors: R.Rakauskaitė, D. Ulvydas. Script writers: R.Rakauskaitė, D. Ulvydas. Camera: A.Reneckis, D.Vildžiūnas. Composer: P.Vyšniauskas.

"The Lithuanians" combined available videos for a complete presentation in memory of these events that led to Lithuania's Re establishment of Independence

Defenders of Freedom Day January 13, 1991 Remembered

Yesterday was the 21th anniversary of the tragic events that occurred in Vilnius, Lithuania at the TV tower.

Following is a reflection by Liuda Balcius of Lockport, NY and attached is a slideshow (in Lithuanian) by Ray Bliudnikas of the Lithuanian Heritage Society of Rochester..

"Sveikinimai Jums Draugai!

"I am taking this opportunity to share as I do each year the living reflection of what took place 21 years ago at the TV Tower in Vilnius, Lithuania. Some memories fade, but for all Lithuanians who cherish freedom of mind, soul, spirit and country, memories of those events leading to the Independence of Lithuania never fade."

"The Lithuanian National Anthem ("Lietuvos Himnas") is usually sung at Lithuanian gatherings throughout the World. There will be no better day than today to perhaps rededicate ourselves to the ideals set forth in Lithuania's "Lietuvos Himnas". I know of no other Anthem as beautiful and lyrically more meaningful than is ours."

"Lithuania, my homeland, land of heroes! Let your sons draw strength from the past. Let your children follow only the path of virtue, working for the good of their native land and for all mankind. Let the sun banish all darkness from Lithuania, with light and truth always guiding our steps. Let the love of Lithuania burn in our hearts And for the sake of our country, let unity blossom."

Fourteen "heroes" died in the siege, many young people and some under the treads of tanks. Rimantas died at 25 years of age.
