Posted From New York City
I'm the same Nelson who posted that comment on your "is yelp ripping people off" article. You already know how I feel about the yelp algorithms of "fuck everybody over, let's take over" type of thing. I hope you're reading this Ray (can I call you Ray?) .. Uhm, I'm looking all over your websites for something , an alternative and ... hm I don't see an alternative being offered. I agree, let's all bash the shit out of Yelp, they deserve it ... Maybe you have something , or someone , even a corporate entity up your sleeve that hasn't been published yet? Well anyway ... I'm posting here because you already mentioned somewhere in some link I read how busy you are (yeah so we too are busy over here). If you have a moment and you can offer something, or someone (a client) you've worked for - or a new website that someone has and you haven't told us about it yet, I'd appreciate if you let me know. I don't like any of the usual mediums except Google. I do well on google but it's not a local, community based project focusing various domains on particular cities. (In other words what I'm saying is this global thing is sorta bullshit. What we need is individual domains named for each major city. Where are the Marketing geniuses? Domains named after cities just fail because the communications guys who created them don't know wtf they are doing.)
Anyway, as always, I'd like to top this message off with another chorus of "Yelp Sucks Ass".
----- Thanks for listening -----

Comment on A Candid Yelp Advertising Review – Is Yelp Ripping People Off? by nelson

Yelp totally is bogus when it comes to paid advertising. I didn't have to pay to know that. The best way to deal with yelp.com is to set up a free website that
provides review services and KEEP it free. Don't charge for advertising, just keep it free. That website should be for small businesses only. If you want to charge big corporations then set up a different commercial website and make your money that way. yelp also has this kind of cheap thrill social network happening and if an alternative FREE and always free bulletin board/chat/dating division on the website for small business is created that will help pull consumers away from yelp as well. The best way to do all this is to gear the new domain and website toward the city it is headquartered in. That city should be New York City. Dedicate the website to consumers and businesses in New York. Build it up (remember, it needs to remain FREE) , and then as you gain consumer traffic on there, use the domain and website as a launch pad for something global.
Anyway, I agree that Yelp sucks ass. The sales people on there seem desperate like they are going to get fired for not being able to persuade us to sign up and pay. Nobody on yelp seems to really know what they are doing.
They have a communications team of amateurs. It's easy to defeat yelp, because they are sabatoging themselves every day.
