It seemed like no other team embodied such a wide range of opinions at SEC Media Days last week as Arkansas.

Everybody’s got an opinion. That’s one of the great things that makes this site go is everybody bringing good, thoughtful commentary about all things Razorback.

Our predictions for conference division order were pretty much in line with the voters at SEC Media Days. But it seemed like no other team embodied such a wide range of opinions last week in Birmingham as Arkansas. Math professors would’ve had a field day with the Hogs “standard deviation.”

It reminds me of a scene from the movie “Road House.” Patrick Swayze’s character, Dalton, is an undersized bouncer charged with cleaning up an out-of-control Missouri bar. When first introduced to fellow bouncer Morgan (portrayed expertly, by the way, by former pro wrestler Terry Funk), he cracks, “You sure don’t look like much to me.” To which Dalton slyly replies “Opinions vary,” before walking away.

A lot of positive energy was displayed by Coach Petrino and the players last week. And that likely helped push the Hogs ahead of Auburn for a second place pre-season ranking in the SEC West. Experience, an easier schedule, and a better defense should have the Hogs improving greatly in 2010.

But one Alabama writer — and we use that term loosely — disagrees. Kirk McNair of BamaMag.com (a Scout.com affiliate) sees the Hogs finishing no higher than fifth in the SEC West, posting a 6-6 overall record and a 3-5 mark in SEC play:

“As for the rest of the SEC Western Division behind Alabama, we have LSU at 6-2, 10-2; Auburn also at 6-2, 10-2, but LSU winning the tie-breaker (head-to-head); Ole Miss a surprising 4-4, 8-4; Arkansas a disappointing 3-5, 6-6 (you can’t just HOPE for defense), and Mississippi State much improved on the field, but still only 1-7, 5-7.”

McNair, who is actually a former Alabama sports information director, of course has the Crimson Tide finishing 12-0. He goes on to state that one of the few things working in the Hogs’ favor is their bye week scheduling:

“Give the Razorbacks credit for one good schedule move. Arkansas has an open date after playing the Tide, a week needed for healing.”

Huh…it’s good to know some things don’t change in Alabama. As the old saying goes, we think that Mr. McNair has “lulled himself into a false sense of competence.” Excuse us now as we go pin this up on our RBN bulletin board.

To go from no bowl…to the Liberty Bowl…to a big-time bowl — or, even more incredibly, a BCS bowl — in just three seasons at Arkansas would be an amazing accomplishment for Bobby Petrino and his staff. If that should happen…wow. A lot of challenges and tough teams to overcome, though, before we get to that point.

And finally, just like Vegas, here are a few ‘proposition bets‘ — interesting side bets that we’re making well over a month before the ball is snapped.

A few notes:

Don’t get us wrong…we think Ryan Mallett is poised to have a record-breaking season. But the politics and popularity contest that is the Heisman Trophy award requires that you play for a big-name school. This year’s Troy Smith over Darren McFadden? Terrelle Pryor over Ryan Mallett. Ugh.

Surely (SURELY!) the Hogs won’t finish in last place in the SEC in total defense for a third consecutive season. If they do, then you can pretty much shoot us now and throw out every prediction we’ve made in these posts.

I don’t know about the rest of you…but I’ll just be happy when we finally beat Houston Dale. It really doesn’t matter by how much. Well…okay…maybe it matters a little bit. But as Al Davis says: “Just win, baby.”

Not sure what Sunshine was thinking when he came up with that Les Miles prop bet. We want ‘The Hat’ to stay a while longer, folks. Plus…his clock management skills are without equal in college football today.

The annual SEC Media Days event kicks off in Birmingham on Wednesday and Arkansas Head Coach Bobby Petrino is scheduled to appear on Thursday morning along with Razorback players Ryan Mallett, D.J. Williams and Jake Bequette.

For now, though, it’s time to unveil our predictions for the 2010 season — as well as ask you to give us yours. It’s always a fun time every year to have everyone share their version of what the future holds.

As always, we’re planning to do this with a three-part series of posts over the next three days so that we can fully break down all of the prognostications.

We start today with the bottom line…wins and losses.

A few notes:

Yeah…uh…we realize you may have a hard time reading these because the sunshine emanating from them is so bright. As most of you longtime RBN readers know, we’re not typically known for our unified positivity around here. But what can we say…we obviously think it’s going to be a season to remember on The Hill.

Having said that, the usual caveats apply as far as injuries, acts of God, etc. In particular, these predictions assume that a certain 6′ 7″ quarterback doesn’t experience any more phalange issues…or get struck by lightning.

For the first time in our four years of predictions, we’re unanimous in picking a Razorbacks victory over LSU. You keep on truckin’ down there Lester…we’re liking our chances against you more and more every year up here in ‘Ar-Kansas.’

Road games are always worrisome in the SEC. While the jury is still out on whether Georgia will be improved, there’s little doubt that both Auburn and Mississippi State will be better than last year. But personally, I’m most concerned about playing what could be Steve Spurrier’s best USC team on the road in Columbia.

After kicking woes plagued the Hogs in 2009, two freshmen are poised to enter stage right and contend for starting positions this season.

The Incumbents

In 2009, the Hogs ranked dead last in the SEC, and 108th out of 120 Division I schools in net punting at 32.6 yards per punt. Punter Dylan Breeding beat out scholarship kicker Briton Forester before the season and, at times, showed a big leg. But Breeding did not consistently get the ball to ‘turn over,’ which meant low, line drive, returnable kicks were the norm last season.

As for placekicker Alex Tejada, he had a decent year in 2009 by the numbers: 16-22 FGs and 58-59 PATs. Both are respectable stats, but clutch field goals (at Florida and LSU) eluded the junior from Springdale until the game-winning kick vs. East Carolina provided a 20-17 Liberty Bowl overtime win.

The Newcomers

Enter stage right this year’s contenders: Zach Hocker (6-0, 170) from Russellville, and Eduardo Camara (5-8, 160) from Cedar Hill, Texas — both on scholarship. All indications are that the Hogs would like for Hocker to take the punting job and let Camara duke it out with Tejada for the placements. All three will vie for kickoff duties.

Hocker averaged 45.0 yards per punt as a senior, while kicking a school record 15 field goals. His long field goal was 52 yards, and 58 of his 61 kickoffs were touchbacks.

Camara, who was injured some during his senior year, finished as one of the top kickers in Texas. Five of Camara’s 15 field goals were from 40+, including a 49-yarder.

Competition is good for everyone. On the special teams front, keep your eye on Hocker and Camara as fall camp begins.

Every year about this time, it’s always interesting to peruse through the Las Vegas betting lines to get a flavor for what the ‘wise guys’ think about the Hogs.

Since it’s a fairly slow time for the sportsbooks, the futures bets for the NCAA and NFL roll out during the dog days of summer to whet people’s appetite for football. Of course these are, by and large, sucker bets. But they’re still fun to check out.

So — for entertainment purposes only, mind you — here’s how one book sees the SEC, BCS and Heisman races shaping up in 2010.

A few observations after digesting these:

Arkansas’ odds to win the West are actually better than Auburn’s despite Auburn having lower odds to win the SEC outright. The likely reason is the Hogs game with Alabama is at home, while the Tigers travel to Tuscaloosa to face the Tide.

South Carolina is getting more love than you would think. The Gamecocks are 3-1 to win the East — the same as Georgia, who they play at home early in the season (September 11th).

Tennessee is getting more consideration by this book than they deserve. New coach, new systems, new quarterback, limited depth should equate to much lower odds than 4-1 (SEC East) and 8-1 (SEC Overall).

For the Heisman, Ingram and Pryor will be on teams that will have a lot of success. For Mallett to be a legit contender, the Hogs have to win at least 10 games to stay in the national spotlight.

This season is shaping up to be an interesting year for quarterbacks in the SEC. Seven teams return their starters in 2010, but only the top three seem real happy with their guy.

After a four year run of National Championships, one of the reasons the SEC may be down a bit this year is quarterback play. When a backup quarterback like Arkansas’ Tyler Wilson could easily rank fifth on this list, you know most of the conference is still searching.

If you want to win a championship, you need playmakers at quarterback…”bus drivers” need not apply. Here’s how we think the SEC’s 2010 signal callers stack up.

1. Ryan Mallett, Junior, Arkansas (3,624 PaYds, 30 TDs in 2009) — No surprise here. Mallett will likely prove he’s the best in the nation by season’s end. A 10-win season might give Arkansas its first Heisman winner in school history.

2. John Brantley, Junior, Florida (410 PaYds, 7 TDs in 2009) — Some might be surprised to see a quarterback who has never started a college game ranked so high on this list. Brantley has all the skills to be a very good pro-style quarterback — pocket presence, arm strength, etc. The Gators offense will look a lot different this fall as the “Post-Tebow Era” gets underway, and Brantley will be the beneficiary.

3. Greg McElroy, Senior, Alabama (2,508 PaYds, 17 TDs in 2009) — Still on a high from winning the National Championship last year, Alabama’s spring practice strides have the Tide faithful talking about a repeat in 2010. In his first year as a starter, McElroy went from being a “bus driver” to a “playmaker” — distributing the ball to Julio Jones, Trent Richardson, and Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram. Not flashy, but solid…perfect for a Saban-coached team.

4. Cam Newton, Junior, Auburn (2,833 PaYds, 22 TDs in 2009 at Blinn College) — After a lot of debate, Newton was awarded the starting quarterback job a week after the spring game by head coach Gene Chizik and offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn. The 6-6, 245-pound juco transfer started his college career at Florida. In the spring, he beat out last year’s backup senior Neil Caudle among others and, according to Chizik, “gives us the best chance to win.”

5. Stephen Garcia, Junior, South Carolina (2,862 PaYds, 17 TDs, 10 Ints in 2009) — Steve Spurrier doesn’t want to, but he most likely will have to go with Garcia again. Poor decision making and a penchant for throwing interceptions — at critical spots in big games — would give even the most patient coach pause. Spurrier’s way past patient.

6. Jordan Jefferson, Junior, LSU (2,166 PaYds, 17 TDs in 2009) — Want to know how irked the LSU coaches and fans were with the progress of Jordan Jefferson in the spring? They have yet to name Jefferson, a junior, the starter and are contemplating going back to senior Jarrett Lee. Yes, THE Jarrett Lee who threw 16 INTs in 2008, seven of which were returned for touchdowns. Yikes! Jefferson was 8-for-23 passing for 94 yards against an injury-depleted defense in the spring game. Not good for “Les the Hat,” who is on the hot seat in Baton Rouge.

7. Mike Hartline, Senior, Kentucky (802 PaYds, 6 TDs, 7 Ints in 2009) — Although new head coach Joker Phillips hasn’t officially named him the starter, Hartline is talking like the job is already his. “It’s my time,” Hartline said, “I’m not going to let anyone take this away from me.” His only competition is from sophomore Morgan Newton (706 PaYds, 6 TDs in 2009) and redshirt freshman Ryan Mossakowski.

8. Matt Simms, Junior, Tennessee (2,204 PaYds, 17 TDs in 2009 at El Camino College) — After the departure of the most immature coach to ever walk an SEC sideline, the Vol Nation looks to new head coach Derek Dooley to right the ship. Dooley was dealt a tough hand at quarterback after senior Nick Stephens decided to bolt this spring. That left only juco transfer Matt Simms (son of former NY Giants QB Phil Simms), and true freshman Tyler Bray. With five new starters on the offensive line, it could be a long year for Simms in Knoxville.

9. Aaron Murray, Redshirt Freshman, Georgia (No Stats in 2009) — It’s been a tough year for quarterbacks at Georgia. The Dawgs suffered through the “Joe Cox Experiment” in 2009, and then saw backup Zach Mettenberger get dismissed after an alcohol-related arrest in the spring. It’s Murray’s gig now after a spring battle with #2 quarterback Logan Gray. He’s going to be a good one, but in 2009 will be learning on the job. Experienced talent is in place around him.

10. Nathan Stanley, Sophomore, Ole Miss (163 PaYds, TD in 2009) — It was no surprise to Arkansas fans to see Jevan Snead regress in 2009. After a promising sophomore campaign, Snead led the NCAA in interceptions (20) in ‘09, then failed to get drafted after declaring for the NFL. They don’t call Snead’s former coach the “Quarterback Killer” for nothing. This year’s “bus driver” Stanley has an uphill climb ahead.

11. Chris Relf, Sophomore, (283 PaYds, 5 TDs in 2009) or Tyler Russell, RS Freshman, Mississippi State — Head coach Dan Mullen couldn’t decide on a starter in the spring, so the battle for the Bulldog starting quarterback will continue in the fall. Last year’s part-time starter Relf ran for more yards (500) in 2009 than he passed for (283). Russell is the future, but his so-so spring game line (12-26, 120 PaYds, TD) wasn’t enough to get the nod.

12. Larry Smith, Junior, Vanderbilt (1,126 PaYds, 7 TDs in 2009) — Before a hamstring tear in the tenth game of 2009, Larry Smith was putting up some decent numbers for the Commodores. “He’s got to improve on some accuracy and completion percentage and stuff like that,” said new offensive coordinator Jimmy Kiser. Ummm…yeah…that completion percentage “stuff” is pretty important.

Savor being at the top of this list Hog fans. Only 60 days until kickoff!!!

RBN tidbits from around the web. Crimson Tide fans have been issued an early warning: 'Expect war in Fayetteville' on September 25th.

A few RBN tidbits from around the web.

– The guys over at the Roll ‘Bama Roll blog have issued an early warning to Crimson Tide fans: Expect war in Fayetteville on September 25th.

“[...] Rest assured that the Hogs can smell the proverbial blood in the water at the thought of Alabama having to travel to Fayetteville to attempt to use a thin and inexperienced secondary to stop Bobby Petrino’s complex aerial assault.”

As you might expect, the fan reaction to the post in the comments section is the typical Alabama mixture of either acknowledgement or arrogance.

But blogger Outsidethelines also makes an interesting point that Razorback fans are likely to “feel very confident about their chances against LSU, Auburn, Ole Miss, and Mississippi State.”

Of course, an argument could be made that there’s a little too much fan confidence when it comes to the outcome of those games in 2010. The record does show, however, that the Hogs have played very competitively against those teams in recent years. And with a veteran Razorback team returning, it’s hard to imagine this season being any different.

– As for the wars waged in Little Rock — at War Memorial Stadium, of course – what should’ve been an nice opportunity to announce a new sponsorship with a global telecommunications provider on Wednesday turned into another public example of why the WMS Commission is still clueless.

After announcing a “big” new naming rights deal with AT&T, surely one of the commissioners realized that the gathered media might actually ask for the exact amount of the deal? “Uh…no comment.” And so now the banner headline screams: “War Memorial strikes secret deal with AT&T!”

Hmmm…we’ve already rehashed the old “Arkansas to Big 12″ argument this offseason. Maybe it’s time to once again food fight over playing more games on “Frank Broyles Field” instead of “AT&T Field?”

It’s always a good day when the RazorBloggers copy of Phil Steele’s College Football Preview (a.k.a. “The College Football Bible”) shows up.

For those of you who are familiar with Steele’s preseason magazine, you know how easy it is to get completely lost in it. Never has so much been put into 328 pages for the college football crazy.

If you’ve never seen it, take it from me, you can find yourself mesmerized very quickly. Stat Nerds (yours truly, included) can pore over this magazine for weeks and still find something new every time you pick it up.

A couple of things caught my attention right off the bat.

Steele likes the Razorbacks, without a doubt. With a #17 ranking overall, he has Ryan Mallett as the #3 quarterback in the country. Steele also has the Arkansas wide receiver corps ranked #1 nationally, and believes the Hogs could go 12-0 — 2 of his 9 power rankings project that success. But Steele also appears to like Auburn (#15) and Georgia (#19) just as much.

Auburn’s schedule sets up even better than Arkansas. With LSU, Georgia and Arkansas all at home, and with an improved defense, Steele nudges the Tigers past the Hogs with a projected second place finish in the SEC West behind Alabama.

Georgia, on the other hand, returns ten starters on offense. And, according to Steele, the Bulldogs have the best offensive line in the country. If freshman quarterback Aaron Murray can be serviceable, he likes the Dawgs to be his “#3 Surprise Team” of 2010; finishing second in the SEC East.

The only negative Steele mentions about Arkansas is he doesn’t believe that the Hogs can sustain a +15 turnover margin again in 2010. The +15 mark ranked sixth nationally in 2009, and is seen as “good fortune” — something that is not easily repeated.

“Teams with a positive, double digit turnover ratio had the same or weaker records 77% of the time [the following season].” — Phil Steele’s 2010 College Football Preview (Page 312)

See what I mean about a “Stat Nerd’s Paradise?” I love it.

On the flip side, an improved schedule and overall team experience are working in the Razorbacks’ favor. The Hogs strength of schedule went from #5 in 2009 to #33 in 2010. Swapping Vanderbilt for Florida and playing Alabama, Ole Miss and LSU at home helped that no doubt.

Steele has come up with a pretty cool “Experience Chart,” whereby he examines each team in the following categories: 1) Starting juniors and seniors; 2) Percentage of letterman returning; 3) Percentage of yards returning; 4) Percentage of tackles returning; and 5) Offensive lineman career starts.

Using that formula, the Hogs ranked #2 in the nation on the Experience Chart trailing only Boise State, who returns 20 starters in 2010. By comparison, Ole Miss ranks 117 out of 120. (Uh oh.)

In the end, Steele thinks the Hogs show improvement again, finish third in the SEC West, and play Texas in the Cotton Bowl on January 7, 2011. My gut tells me that’s on the low end of what this team is capable of doing. That’s why they play ‘em, I guess.

In case you missed the announcement earlier today, we’re pretty stoked to be a part of #RazUp, a “tweetup” gathering later this month for online Hog fans.

Our friend Brandon Marcello of WholeHogSports.com has been spearheading the planning of this event and laid out a few of the details today…including the obvious question:

What’s a “tweetup,” you ask? It’s a chance for Arkansas fans and avid Twitter users to meet up — gasp! — in person, share stories and talk all things Hogs with fellow fans and the members of the media they follow on Twitter.

We’re calling it #RazUp and the first one has been scheduled for June 18 at 6 p.m. The location has yet to be set, but it will be at a local establishment in Fayetteville. The details of the event, including the location, will be announced soon.

Having a chance to hang out in person and discuss all things Razorback with those of you who visit with us here regularly is something we’ve wanted to do for a long time. And hopefully this event can grow into a regular gathering as the seasons change from football to basketball to baseball. (Yes…there are other seasons besides football.)

All of the details will be set soon, but for now you can use Facebook or Twtvite to RSVP. Also, you can keep up with all the event info by following (and using) the #RazUp hash tag on Twitter.

Both HogBlogger and I are planning to attend and we’re excited to be participating in this event. We hope to see many of you there and, as Brandon said, “meet up, eat, drink and talk Hogs.”
