Women's
bodies are often compared to the earth. Buzzwords for this comparison (usually
found in “love” poems by men) are: “fertile,” ‘porous,' “lush,” “fruitful,” and
“wet.” On a recent trip to the desert, I reclaimed the vast terrain as a
vehicle for intersectional feminism to thrive. Sure, call my body “earthly,” if
that earth is a stretch of barren-looking land with little rain and much
scorch.

Now, the desert is a fragile ecosystem where much life does in fact
happen. There are amazing plants and
animals in that dusty wonderland with special talents and really poignant
personal narratives. But when you're driving for four hours and all you see is
the tanned hip of the sand meeting the blue jean mini-skirt of the sky, your
first thought isn't always, “There's so much life here but I'm used to more
overt ecosystems, so I'm not able to see it. What a unique landscape for
specimens to experience the world!” You think, “I'm fucking hot.” “I want a
cold beer.” And “Fuck, there is nothingout here. This is amazing,” in varying orders, (depending on how bad you want a
beer and how badly you needed to get away from all your friends).

The desert isn't dead but it challenges our understanding of what life looks
like. It's not barren, but it's not overflowing with growth in the way we have
been conditioned to understand it. In a Western, capitalist, sexist society
where life, earth, and women's bodies are idealized as fertile, porous, lush, fruitful,
and wet, landscapes like the desert—that harbor existences that thrive in
direct opposition to these standards—subvert the whole notion of what life,
earth, and women's bodies are supposedto look like and supposed to do. The
desert doesn't follow the patriarchy's rules. And neither do militant
intersectional queer feminists.

May you find your space of release from societal pressures and may you be your
best self to all those who deserve it.

Xx
–Griffin

PS “Women'' Rights” underwear is from Seattle

After my last podcast where I got song ideas
from friends, I thought it would be interesting to find songs in my collection
where there are family titles (sister, mother, son, etc.) in each song title.
Also, my grandfather passed away recently and it got me thinking more about
family. So, this podcast goes out to my grandpa—I'm sure you'd have no idea what
to make of any of this music.

-Kurt

To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select

#415 with Russ Van Cleave

Things have been hectic. The things that one
might expect (and most hope) to go well have been fine. Everything else feels
like a tumultuous roller coaster—at once, good, bad, and ugly. As such, it's
been some time since I've been able to get one of these together. Per the
usual, there is no specific agenda or theme although I did feel inclined to
include a set of African music after reading Kevin Dunn's excellent article on
African politics in Razorcake
#92. If you're one of those squeamish listeners who finds such things too
far outside of your comfort zone, then hopefully you can find some other good
spins among the old, new, and obscure tracks that are posted herein.

-Russ

To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select

Schott)

Dead Bars: I've totally heard of these guys...

Treepeople: Treepeople was the band that Doug Martsch was in before Built To
Spill came around. This album (creepy cover art and all) is the only full-length
Treepeople album I've really listened to repeatedly, but other things I've
heard by them are also enjoyable. This song is probably my favorite cut from
this record.

Big Drill Car: There have been times in my life when BDC has nearly completely
dominated my listening agenda so it came as quite a shock to me that I have yet
to play something from this classic ‘90s L.A.
outfit on my podcasts. I decided to rectify this issue by playing my favorite
song from their final record.

Seaweed: I figure since we're getting all nineties up in here, why not play
some Seaweed? This cut is from their stellar 1998 release, Actions and Indications.

C.A. Balogun & His Abalabi Group: Since Razorcake issue #92 features a pretty
bitchin' article on African politics (and also makes mention of some of music
from the continent), I decided to capitalize on this opportunity and play a
short set of African music on this podcast. This first song is a song recorded
in the late 1950s by a Yoruban group from Lagos
in Nigeria.
Nigeria, having been a
colony of Britain
since 1800, had access to recorded music from around the world early in the twentieth
century. The intermingling of different musical styles with traditional Yoruban
music led to what was called “palmwine” music or “juju” music, with the first
recordings emerging in the 1930s. This music eventually evolved into “high life”
music. All of these styles were integrated into “Afro Pop” music in the
seventies that was subsequently popularized by artists like King Sunny Ade and
Fela Kuti.

Ishmael Jingo: James Brown toured Africa in 1966 and both his music and message
resonated strongly with post-colonial Africa. The
“Afro-funk” movement was undoubtedly influenced by James Brown and his music. Ishmael
Jingo supposedly recorded this song with his band in the garage of his house in
Mombasa, Kenya in the early 1970s. If you
think you've heard it before, it's because you probably did when you watched
the movie The Last King of Scotland.

Ify Jerry Krusade: This is a cut from a Lagos
musician that features more of a rock influence. Ify Jerry had been a musician
in an afro-rock band called The Hykkers that played for soldiers during the
Biafran War. When the band broke up, Ify Jerry recorded this single. In
general, the history of all of this music is not only very murky and obscure,
but also very complex. Hopefully, these three cuts give you an idea of what's
out there.

Wet Nurse: I saw Orlando's Wet Nurse a few years
ago here in Tampa
and they were fantastic. I really enjoyed the six-song EP I picked up that
night. It was rough-around-the-edges in the way that lots of bands earlier
recordings can often be, but there are some great, well-written songs on it. So,
naturally, I was pretty stoked when I saw that Recess was going to release an
LP by them and have finally gotten around to ordering one from Todd. This is
the self-titled, first track from what I deem to be a quality spin.

Roxy Music: I've been on a Roxy Music kick lately. This cut is the last song
from Siren, which is widely regarded
as one of the best albums they released.

Clock Hands Struggle: These guys are an old and (presumably) now defunct band
from Melbourne, FL. I never saw them play. There's hardly
anything about them on the internet. My only knowledge of this band is from
this CD that I got as a freebie in a mailorder I did with No Idea oh so many
years ago. But, it's a good record and I love this song.

Fleshies: Fleshies are another band I can't believe I've neglected in this
forum for so long. On most days, I would say Brown Flag is my favorite record by these Oakland-based fellas.

Drag The River: At this point, I think most people are familiar with the work
of country-esque duo, Chad Price and Jon Snodgrass, but I thought it would be a
good idea to play this rocker from their 2008 release, You Can't Live This Way.

Treasure Fleet: Damn. I guess this is the third song from a Recess Records
release I've played in this podcast. What can I say? They do quality work over
there in Pedro. I think it's fair to say that Treasure Fleet is more of a project
than a band. This song is from the soundtrack to the movie based on the “TF3
and the Sun Machine” novella all of which is documented for your enjoyment
right here: http://www.thetreasurefleet.com/#treasurefleet. If the vocals sound
familiar, perhaps it's because you recognize them to be those belonging to
Isaac from The Arrivals.

John Doe and The Old 97's: John Doe is the only person I'm aware of who can say
they appeared twice on a tribute album to their own band. This is a cut from a
Knitters tribute album that came out several years ago. The Knitters themselves
covered one of their own songs for this album.

shoes, and Bianca's curious affection for a store called Home Goods. All that

#412 with Kurt Morris

For my 50th (!) podcast for Razorcake I asked for some help from my
Facebook friends. I told them to tell me a favorite song or two, or something
they had been listening to a lot lately. A number of them came through,
including a fair number of Razorcake contributors.Below I've included a sentence or two
about the person who recommended each song. Thanks for your help, all! I
couldn't have done it without you.

Mara'akate – Brian suggested I play one of his bands. He played guitar in
Mara'akate back when we were in college. He went to a neighboring university
and I spent a lot of time hanging out with them. We also did an online zine
called actionattackhelicopter.

Dead Trend – Like Brian, Michael suggested I play his band. Mike writes for Razorcake. The one time we hung out it
just so happened that we saw Kurt Ballou from Converge.

Russian Circles – This one's from Joe. He and I went to college together and
lived on the same floor in the dorm for a couple years.

Mastodon – This is another track from Joe. It's not that I like him more than
the other people; I just really like his two choices for songs.

Wild Animals – Rich chose this one. He's a reviewer for Razorcake and lives in England. I dig the fact that he's fifty
and still really into punk rock.

Dark Thoughts – Liz, also a Razorcakecontributor, chose this song. Liz is the only Razorcake contributor I know of who lives in the Boston area (where I reside). We hang out
from time to time and she always makes me laugh.

The Plimsouls – Jimmy chose this oldie, but goodie. Jimmy is the workhorse of Razorcake. I see more reviews by him in
an issue than anyone else. He's also a fount of knowledge about East LA punk.

Parquet Courts – My girlfriend's co-worker, Jess, chose this tune. We went to a
house show last fall where I was by far the oldest person there. It was pretty
great.

A Giant Dog – We all have that person who got us into punk; for me that was
Jeremiah. He's a walking musical encyclopedia and is always up on great new
music.

Defiance, Ohio
– When I specifically asked Jane for a suggestion she said, “You probably won't
like this, but what about this song by Defiance,
Ohio?” Whatever. I totally dig
this track.

Chamberlain – Tricia is one of my oldest friends. I've known her for over
twenty years. She was a regular customer in the record store I worked at in
high school in our hometown.

Fresh Snow & Julie Fader – Simon works with Razorcake and co-founded the LA Zine Fest. I always like her Razorcake podcasts because they make me
laugh and she has a very pleasant speaking voice.

-Kurt

To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select

#411 with Craven Rock and his buddy Kieran

“Everything has been done, so
stop making art.” This is something haters have been saying as long as people
have been expressing themselves. Just like people have always been talking
about it being the end of the world, people have been talking about how
everything has already been done and how all the stories have been told.
However, if you believe in science, the idea of the end of the world has never
been more real. If you are constantly inundated with information, than it
probably seems truer than ever that everything has been done.

Ever the cynic, I often espouse similar rhetoric. I'll be the first to mention
something has been done a thousand times or to call a band a weak imitation of
its influences—particularly when it comes to punk or rock'n'roll. Well-trod
territory, indeed. But I'm not a hater because I am truly obsessed with music;
always looking for something I haven't heard that truly excites me. It's chasing
the dragon to want music to be as fresh and exciting as it was when I was a
teenager. But I can't imagine not seeking out new music. That's like not
reading books anymore—which is something else people give up on. I haven't
given up. Sometimes, all I'm doing that's not giving up is seeking out
new music. I'm pickier. I dig deeper. I look harder. And, yes, I'm cynical.

But life without getting into music that is new to me would be a dark and
cutting insult. I got to thinking about this when I looked at this set and
realized there's not a single artist on it I've been a fan of for more than a
year or two. That wasn't even intentional.

Keep making art. Stay engaged. Don't give up.

-Craven Rock

To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select

last one looked at multiple periods (ellipses), in this one I'm using the

Interview with Western Settings

Listen Here: Western Settings Interview MP3

Western Settings is a (punkish) (pop) punk band from San Diego, Calif.
It is the kind of band that keeps getting better, that you'll catch yourself
listening to or singing along with again and again. The instrumentals are
energized and melodic, with influences running the gamut, and the uniquely
listenable, gruff vocals deliver often sentimentallyrics. When I moved from Denver to Los Angeles, Western
Settings' Yes It Is—which I was
already frequently listening to and in love with—was the first record I bought
on wax. Their next EP Old
Pain was even better.

The tagline of La Escalera Records, guitarist Will's label and home to their EP, is: “Without each other we have
nothing!” At its core, the deep connection people have to this band is clear to
me: we have each other. This is due in part to their lyrics, and in part to
them; if you have met these guys even once, there's a good chance they already
feel like friends. If you haven't met them, their records can still make you
feel that way.
Western Settings is four guys who eat burritos and make good songs—and are the
biggest sweethearts you'll ever meet besides Suge Knight.

Interview by Madeline Bridenbaugh and Todd Taylor
Introduction by Madeline Bridenbaugh
Photos by Rachel Murray Framingheddu

Ricky—Bass, vocals
Dylan—Guitar
Adam—Drums
Will—Guitar

Listen Here: Western Settings

Interview with Total Control

MP3

Australia's
Total Control makes music that bangs away with weight and heft. It's music with
hooks that shake asses, fists, and heads.

As a culture we're surrounded by pretentious, money-tongued, mindlessly
photocopied art that presents hollow gestures as genius experience. Total
Control is five blokes who named their band after a Motels song. They put a
hell of a lot of work into making multi-dimensional music, but they're not
douchebags about it. They're humble and funny instead. It's nice to put music
on and be enveloped in it, curious about it after it stops playing and to have
it travel around in your mind as a cloud, rippling through your body sure as
blood. It's something to lean on like a concrete pillar. Total Control is one
of my favorite active bands and I highly recommend you seek out both their
albums, Henge Beat and Typical System.

Click here to buy a copyof this printed interview.
Total Control was Razorcake issue 89's cover band.

Present for interview
Mikey Young: guitar, keyboards
James Vinciguerra: drums

Also in the band, but not present
Zephyr Pavey: bass
Al Montfort: guitar
Dan Stewart: vocals

Intro song
“Glass,” Typical System (Iron Lung)
Outro song
“Carpet Rash,” Henge Beat (Iron Lung)

LISTEN HERE: Total Control Interview MP3

To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select

#406 with Kurt Morris

Another grammar-themed podcast, this time focused on
ellipses. Here are some fun facts about each band.

Fugue—As featured in issue #90 of Razorcake!
Coliseum—Ryan Patterson, the singer/guitarist, also played in Automatic, The
Enkindels, and Black Cross, amongst others.
In The Face Of War—They're the only good thing to ever come out of Kokomo, Indiana.
Phoenix Bodies—Sometimes the two singers in the band would perform naked.
The Now—I punched a wall when I first listened to this band.
Youth Brigade—There are two bands with this name: one from LA and one from DC.
This is the DC one.
Whippersnapper—In a review I described their sound as “meshing a mullet and a
sleeveless shirt with a mystic wolf on it to the harmonies and progressive
guitar stylings of Southern California punk.”
Owls—This band is Cap'n Jazz minus one of the guitarists.
Jawbreaker—In an interview I once asked Adam, the drummer, if he was my dad.
(He is not.)
AFI—This song is from their pre-goth phase.
Boysetsfire—This is from their first EP, before they got bad.
Neurosis—This band is beloved by both metal fans and crusty punks. If anyone
can explain why that is, please let me know.

–Kurt welcometoflavorcountry@gmail.com

To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select
