I met Jeff Teague of Atlanta Hawks through a mutual friend and Jeff was in need of portraits to hang on his walls. Well that’s my specialty! I knew I would need to come up with something creative to show the group I was photographing having fun. While I was scouting for locations, I came across the theater. That’s when it hit me, why not pop some popcorn and toss it as a way of showing some motion and fun!

After we finished our photoshoot, Jeff now has 3 large prints from our shoot hanging on his walls!

Here’s one of them:

Gamal was the winner of our facebook fan page portrait contest and we planned our photoshoot to take place at the 100 Black Men of Atlanta office in downtown Atlanta. As we started to warm up for the shoot I noticed the frosted glass wall behind Gamal, I knew that it would make a great background. After setting up the lights and doing a couple test exposures, I felt that something was missing. What could it be? That’s when I had an “aha” moment; I added a blue gelled flash to the other side of the frosted glass wall. My thinking on this was that it would add a nice accent light to outline Gamal and it would add some separation between Gamal and the background.

Here is the final result after bringing all the elements together:

As a small touch I, I brought the camera down a little so that I could get the reflection of Gamal’s fingertips on the table.
Be sure to check back, more portraits from the photoshoot will be posted soon.

Stanley and I met up in downtown Atlanta for an urban photoshoot. I wanted to keep things light so we could move quickly, our goal was to make it out to Woodruff Park while creating portraits along the way. The day before I scouted out locations to get an idea how I could incorporate the backgrounds into Stanley’s portraits.

I took along a flash and umbrella as my off camera lighting gear. Normally I try to shoot using flash whenever I can as this allows me to control two zones of lighting, the background and most importantly the subject. We started the shoot at City Hall to get Stanley warmed up and he sure did warm up quickly!

Almost as soon as we started, I knew that some of Stanley’s portraits would make incredible black and white conversions. In the above portrait, Stanley really pops from the background and he really draws you into the picture.

I am happy to present, portraits of a pastry artist: Pastries by Maria. LaToya was a blast to work with and she had such an inviting smile which made photographing her all that much easier.

I would love to give some background on LaToya and Pastries by Maria.

Pastries by Maria was started when LaToya “Maria” Billups decided to take the many lessons she learned from her grandmother and share them with the locals of Atlanta. Her grandmother was the neighborhood ‘Cake Lady’ so it only seems destiny that she would continue the family tradition. In 2008 LaToya started Pastries by Maria. She began actively sharing some of her favorite tasty treats with friends, family, and colleagues who began requesting her pastries for their own special events.

Now enjoy some of Maria’s tasty pastries!

Sometimes the weather just doesn’t cooperate and you have to make the best of what’s available. That weekend in Palm Bay, well every evening it would pour and I was starting to feel like we would have to reschedule the shoot. I had an aha moment, hmm, let’s check the weather map to see if there would be any areas without storm clouds? Sure enough there was one beach where it wasn’t raining; Satellite Beach, Central Florida. Originally we had planned to do the shoot in Fort Lauderdale.

When we arrived at the beach, the light was fading fast and I knew we had to work quickly. The wind was blowing hard too, which made everything even more trickier. Imagine using a lighting umbrella in a strong breeze, it’s like a sail.

We started out on the shore and gradually worked our way into the water. I had originally planned the shoot this way so I could get Roxanne and Collin comfortable in front of the camera. You’ll see why soon!

Now we’re getting into the water.

The most exciting part of out photo shoot was when Roxanne and Collin were both laying in the water. I wanted to capture the water when it actually went over them.
“Okay, stay with me. Stay with me.” I said to Roxanne and Collin.

And this was the result, well worth the effort to capture this moment!
I was laying on my elbows in the water to get this perspective!

I shot this portrait knowing it would make a beautiful black and white conversion. I had the light positioned so that brightest part would be Roxanne and Collin’s faces, this draws your eyes towards them while fading out the background into darkness.

You can see some of the what it took to create the water portraits here.
