With his politically charged lyrics backed to the tradition-rooted rhythms of his acoustic guitar, Archie Roach has risen to the upper echelon of Australian music. Produced by Paul Kelly and Steve Connolly, Charcoal Lane, was one of Rolling Stone Magazine's Top 50 albums of 1992 and received an ARIA award for Best Indigenous Album of the Year. The album included the heartbreaking tune, ['Took the Child Away'],3 which dealt with the many Aboriginal children, including Roach himself, who were stolen from their parents and placed in non-indigenous households. The song went on to receive a Human Rights Achievement award - the first time that the award has been bestowed on a songwriter.

To celebrate it's 25th anniversary, the album has been remastered and expanded. It includes the iconic track ‘Took The Children Away’ as well as other classic songs like the title track and ‘Down City Streets’.It also includes previously unreleased triple j Live At The Wireless recordings and new interpretations of the classic Charcoal Lane material by Australian artists like Courtney Barnett, Briggs, Dan Sultan, Marlon Williams and Urthboy.

Throughout November, Melbourne-based indie pop four-piece City Calm Down will be featured as Rdio’s Artist To Watch.

Specialising in a decidedly retro-new wave blend of electro-pop and post-punk that falls somewhere between Chvrches, Empire of the Sun, The Horrors and Joy Division, City Calm Down features the talents of Jack Bourke, Sam Mulally, Jeremy Sonnenberg, and Lee Armstrong.

After turning heads with their Movements EP, City Calm Down’s debut album In A Restless House is set for release on 6th November. The exhilarating new single ‘Son’ opens with Mullaly’s organs and Bourke’s signature baritone vocals. The first cut from the album, the track swirls and turns, while continuing to build into a beautiful climax of pop music.

Heralding the arrival of their debut album, this month, fans will be given a glimpse into City Calm Down’s world with exclusive playlists, created for followers on Rdio. Here, fans will be able to get a taste of the band’s sound, as well as what songs they’ve been listening to, and loving, on Rdio.

Although ‘Living in the 70’s’ was released in October 1974 and was an instant smash, it only became clear the following year that Skyhooks were not only breaking both rules and records, but they were seriously breaking new ground as well. New ground as in new frontiers, as in taking the country to places it had never been before. As in changing the culture in a way that hadn’t happened seen since The Beatles visited the Antipodes 11 years earlier. Yes - Skyhooks were that different, and, in Australia in 1975, that ubiquitous.

After 16 weeks atop the national album charts with their first album, they released ‘Ego Is Not A Dirty Word’ in June and spent another 11 weeks there. Their success and their cultural impact was unprecedented for an Australian band, make no mistake,they were a very Australian band – one who sung about Australian places and an Australian life that mainstream society had barely glimpsed, and one who were all of a sudden the biggest and brightest thing in a country that was undergoing some serious changes.

So, 40 years down the track, it is perhaps inevitable that these two classic albums should be brought together to celebrate Skyhooks brilliance and success. Don't You Believe What You've Seen Or You've Heard includes the band's best in stunning remastered sound, overseen at every step by Greg Macainsh himself. It also includes a bunch of pre-album demos as well as previously unreleased live recordings from late ’74 and ’75.

With his new album, 1989, an extraordinary song-by-song cover of Taylor Swift’s iconic LP tearing up the charts, it may be time to take a look back at the album that started it all for singer-songwriter Ryan Adams.

Fifteen years ago, Ryan burst on the scene with his debut solo album Heartbreaker. Recorded in a period of 14 days, and featuring such powerhouse backing musicians as Emmylou Harris, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Heartbreaker marked a definitive artistic split from Adams’ former band Whiskeytown, and included beloved tracks 'Come Pick Me Up' and 'Oh My Sweet Carolina'.

Heartbreaker is a personal record, though powerful, and paved the way for a succession of terrific solo albums for this “bad boy of alt country”. Recorded in Nashville, Heartbreaker’s tone and lyrical theme document a breakup.

Revisit this now-classic album and have your heart broken all over again.

Fifty years ago, Otis Redding released the classic R&B album Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul. Called one of the greatest studio-recorded albums of the 1960s, Otis Blue was a triumph for the singer/songwriter from Georgia.

Recorded in a single 24-hour period at Stax Recording Studios in Memphis, Otis Blue includes songs written by Redding, as well as Sam Cooke (who had died just a few months earlier). The musicianship, sound and soul evident on this recording make the album a must-listen. Booker T. & the M.G.’s were his backing band, joined by Isaac Hayes, who played piano on the album.

Among the standout tracks is 'Respect', the same song Aretha Franklin would make her own two years later. Redding said of it, “...It took a day to write, 20 minutes to arrange, and one take to record.”. Other singles released from Otis Blue were 'I’ve Been Loving You Too Long' and 'Shake'.

A perfect slice of 1960s soul, artists from Janis Joplin to Leon Bridges have cited Redding as an influence, and on Otis Blue, it’s easy to see why.

With the Carlton Dry Independent Music Awards less than two weeks away and Rdio presenting the Best Independent Single or EP Award, we thought it best to take you through the illustrious nominees.

Our fifth and final nominee is 'Depreston' by Courtney Barnett - her second nomination in this category.

The Melbourne-based singer/songwriter first came to light in 2012 when her self-released EP, I've Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris appeared and was roundly praised across Australia. Her conversational, deadpan delivery and garage rock-infused folk-pop style caught the attention of influential website Pitchfork, which named her song 'Avant Gardener' one of its Best New Tracks during the summer of 2013.

After two subsequent EP's, a lot of US and European touring and mounting international hype, the tell-it-like-it-is troubadour released her debut album Sometimes I Sit & Think, & Sometimes I Just Sit'. Wistful and a bit detached, single 'Depreston' is loaded with Barnett's signature wry lyricism, this time telling the sombre tale of house-hunting in the suburbs of Melbourne.
