<p>Although <em>‘Living in the 70’s’</em> was released in October 1974 and was an instant smash, it only became clear the following year that <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Skyhooks/">Skyhooks</a> were not only breaking both rules and records, but they were seriously breaking new ground as well. New ground as in new frontiers, as in taking the country to places it had never been before. As in changing the culture in a way that hadn’t happened seen since The Beatles visited the Antipodes 11 years earlier. Yes - <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Skyhooks/">Skyhooks</a> were that different, and, in Australia in 1975, that ubiquitous.</p>

<p>After 16 weeks atop the national album charts with their first album, they
released <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Skyhooks/album/Don%27t_You_Believe_What_You%27ve_Seen_Or_You%27ve_Heard/track/Ego_Is_Not_A_Dirty_Word_(2015_Remaster)/"><em>‘Ego Is Not A Dirty Word’</em></a> in June and spent another 11 weeks there. Their success and their cultural impact was unprecedented for an Australian band, make no mistake, they were a very Australian band – one who sung about Australian places and an Australian life that mainstream society had barely glimpsed, and one who
were all of a sudden the biggest and brightest thing in a country that was undergoing some serious changes.</p>

<p>So, 40 years down the track, it is perhaps inevitable that these two classic albums should be brought together to celebrate <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Skyhooks/">Skyhooks</a> brilliance and success. <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Skyhooks/album/Don%27t_You_Believe_What_You%27ve_Seen_Or_You%27ve_Heard/track/Ego_Is_Not_A_Dirty_Word_(2015_Remaster)/"><em>Don't You Believe What You've Seen Or You've Heard</em></a> includes the band's best in stunning remastered sound, overseen at every step by Greg Macainsh himself. It also includes a bunch of pre-album demos as well as previously unreleased live
recordings from late ’74 and ’75. </p>

<p>With his new album, <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Ryan_Adams/album/1989/"><em>1989</em></a>, an extraordinary song-by-song cover of <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Taylor_Swift/">Taylor Swift’s</a> iconic LP tearing up the charts, it may be time to take a look back at the album that started it all for singer-songwriter <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Ryan_Adams/">Ryan Adams</a>.</p>

<p>Fifteen years ago, <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Ryan_Adams/">Ryan</a> burst on the scene with his debut solo album <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Ryan_Adams/album/Heartbreaker/"><em>Heartbreaker</em></a>. Recorded in a period of 14 days, and featuring such powerhouse backing musicians as <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Emmylou_Harris/">Emmylou Harris</a>, <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Gillian_Welch/">Gillian Welch</a> and David Rawlings, <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Ryan_Adams/album/Heartbreaker/"><em>Heartbreaker</em></a> marked a definitive artistic split from <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Ryan_Adams/">Adams’</a> former band <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Whiskeytown/">Whiskeytown</a>, and included beloved tracks <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Ryan_Adams/album/Heartbreaker/track/Come_Pick_Me_Up/"><em>'Come Pick Me Up'</em></a> and <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Ryan_Adams/album/Heartbreaker/track/Oh_My_Sweet_Carolina/"><em>'Oh My Sweet Carolina'</em></a>. </p>

<p><a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Ryan_Adams/album/Heartbreaker/"><em>Heartbreaker</em></a> is a personal record, though powerful, and paved the way for a succession of terrific solo albums for this “bad boy of alt country”. Recorded in Nashville, <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Ryan_Adams/album/Heartbreaker/"><em>Heartbreaker’s</em></a> tone and lyrical theme document a breakup. </p>

<p>Revisit this now-classic album and have your heart broken all over again.</p>

<p>Fifty years ago, <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Otis_Redding/">Otis Redding</a> released the classic R&amp;B album <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Otis_Redding/album/Otis_Blue_Otis_Redding_Sings_Soul_(Collector%27s_Edition)/"><em>Otis Blue: Otis Redding Sings Soul</em></a>. Called one of the greatest studio-recorded albums of the 1960s, <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Otis_Redding/album/Otis_Blue_Otis_Redding_Sings_Soul_(Collector%27s_Edition)/"><em>Otis Blue</em></a> was a triumph for the singer/songwriter from Georgia.</p>

<p>Recorded in a single 24-hour period at Stax Recording Studios in Memphis, <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Otis_Redding/album/Otis_Blue_Otis_Redding_Sings_Soul_(Collector%27s_Edition)/"><em>Otis Blue </em></a> includes songs written by Redding, as well as <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Sam_Cooke/">Sam Cooke</a> (who had died just a few months earlier). The musicianship, sound and soul evident on this recording make the album a must-listen. <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Booker_T._and_the_M.G.%27s/">Booker T. &amp; the M.G.’s</a> were his backing band, joined by <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Isaac_Hayes/">Isaac Hayes</a>, who played piano on the album. </p>

<p>Among the standout tracks is <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Aretha_Franklin/"><em>'Respect'</em></a>, the same song <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Otis_Redding/album/Otis_Blue_Otis_Redding_Sings_Soul_(Collector%27s_Edition)/track/I%27ve_Been_Loving_You_Too_Long_(Remastered_Mono)/">Aretha Franklin</a> would make her own two years later. <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Otis_Redding/album/Otis_Blue_Otis_Redding_Sings_Soul_(Collector%27s_Edition)/">Redding</a> said of it, <em>“...It took a day to write, 20 minutes to arrange, and one take to record.”</em>. Other singles released from <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Otis_Redding/album/Otis_Blue_Otis_Redding_Sings_Soul_(Collector%27s_Edition)/"><em>Otis Blue</em></a> were <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Otis_Redding/album/Otis_Blue_Otis_Redding_Sings_Soul_(Collector%27s_Edition)/track/I%27ve_Been_Loving_You_Too_Long_(Remastered_Mono)/"><em>'I’ve Been Loving You Too Long'</em></a> and <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Otis_Redding/album/Otis_Blue_Otis_Redding_Sings_Soul_(Collector%27s_Edition)/track/Shake_(Remastered_Mono)/"><em>'Shake'</em></a>. </p>

<p>A perfect slice of 1960s soul, artists from <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Janis_Joplin/">Janis Joplin</a> to <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Leon_Bridges/">Leon Bridges</a> have cited <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Otis_Redding/">Redding</a> as an influence, and on <a href="https://www.rdio.com/artist/Otis_Redding/album/Otis_Blue_Otis_Redding_Sings_Soul_(Collector%27s_Edition)/"><em>Otis Blue</em></a>, it’s easy to see why.</p>

<p>With the Carlton Dry Independent Music Awards less than two weeks away and Rdio presenting the Best Independent Single or EP Award, we thought it best to take you through the illustrious nominees.</p>

<p>Our fifth and final nominee is <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Courtney_Barnett/album/Depreston/">'Depreston'</a> by <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Courtney_Barnett/">Courtney Barnett</a> - her second nomination in this category. </p>

<p>The Melbourne-based singer/songwriter first came to light in 2012 when her self-released EP, <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Courtney_Barnett/album/I%27ve_Got_a_Friend_Called_Emily_Ferris_1/"><em>I've Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris</em></a> appeared and was roundly praised across Australia. Her conversational, deadpan delivery and garage rock-infused folk-pop style caught the attention of influential website Pitchfork, which named her song <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Courtney_Barnett/album/The_Double_EP__A_Sea_Of_Split_Peas/track/Avant_Gardener/"><em>'Avant Gardener'</em></a> one of its Best New Tracks during the summer of 2013.</p>

<p>After two subsequent EP's, a lot of US and European touring and mounting international hype, the tell-it-like-it-is troubadour released her debut album <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Courtney_Barnett/album/Sometimes_I_Sit_and_Think%2C_And_Sometimes_I_Just_Sit/"><em>Sometimes I Sit &amp; Think, &amp; Sometimes I Just Sit'</em></a>. Wistful and a bit detached, single <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Courtney_Barnett/album/Depreston/"><em>'Depreston'</em></a> is loaded with Barnett's signature wry lyricism, this time telling the sombre tale of house-hunting in the suburbs of Melbourne. </p>

<p><a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Courtney_Barnett/album/Depreston/">'Depreston'</a> by <a href="http://www.rdio.com/artist/Courtney_Barnett/">Courtney Barnett</a> - A worthy nominee for the 2015 Carlton Dry Independent Music Awards for Best Single or EP.</p>
