GrrlScientist presents Singing in Slow Motion (http://scienceblogs.com/grrlscientist/2008/11/singing_in_slow_motion.php) posted at Living the Scientific Life (http://scienceblogs.com/grrlscientist/), saying, Birdsong is the primary model system that helps scientists understand how the brain produces complex sequences of learned behavior, such as playing the piano. In songbirds, there are many interconnected brain regions that play specific and important role in the production of song. These brain regions are known as song control nuclei. Two song control nuclei, the High Vocal Center (HVC) and the robust nucleus of the arcopallium (RA), are especially important for birdsong because damage to either prevents the bird from singing altogether. It was hypothesized that either HVC or RA could orchestrate the rhythm of the bird's song, acting like a sort of biological metronome, but the technology did not exist to identify which song control nucleus might play this role -- until now. In an elegant combination of physics and biology, two researchers at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge invented a tiny new device that allowed them to identify HVC as regulating the rhythm of birdsong.
October edition of All Things Medical Blog carnival

This is the October edition of All Things Medical Blog carnival. Thanks to Therapy Doc for digging the stuff up. And thanks to Davex for the collaboration offer. There were plenty of new submissions. I did not check them all for the quality, though majority is of really good quality. Mostly I had checked if the posts are medically related. Also, I disagree with some posts, but better you read and judge yourself. And an announcement: As you probably know, we (particularly I) develop some sort of AI medical diagnostics. Look at Symptomat (http://symptomat.com/) program. This is an expert system, but relatively a simple one. I still need to complete the set of several thousands questions, there are only several hundreds available now. Recently in collaboration with Intelligent Avatars we had started the new project of the Doctor-Robot. So, this will be a really advanced system. We already put some money for start-up and applied for a government grant from Australia to make the nice Demo-version. If somebody wants to invest or to participate in the project, please let me know. Look at the Robot-Hosting (http://robot-hosting.com/) for some of the technology we are going to use. Basically, this will be a real robot, whom you can talk to. If you saw Sci-Fi movies were an androids work as doctors you can imagine this. The doctor-robot will be exactly like that, but a real one (not an actor). According to Shahin: “what we have now is THE most advanced computer AI system EVER created on the surface of the earth Except than the mars Rover of the NASA. Basically robot will include the medical knowledge block, own emotions block, patients’ emotions recognition block, image recognition block, speech recognition block and so on. Eventually, all those programs –like EKG reading software and X-ray recognition software will be included into the system. You may complain to this RoboDoc about your problems a lot, everything will be thoriugly considered. If the Symptomat uses some preset rules for diagnostics (which I mostly assign manually), the new Robot-Doctor will have the Neural Network, which would require teaching the robot. So my personal task will be to teach the robot the way they teach students in Med Schools. It will probably take couple of years for the beginning version only. Also, Dr. Patch Adams (http://www.patchadams.com/) will collaborate on the project (you probably know Dr. Adams (http://www.patchadams.org/) from the movie “Patch Adams”). Majority of the software is already on hands at the moment – neural network and emotions block, speech recognition and so on. However, we need to get enough hardware to have the system running fast, plus we need to combine the entire existing software into one cohesive robot. So, we would need to find more programmers. In the beginning, the robot probably will not replace a doctor anyway, but rather will be an assistant to collect history (a robot can talk with a patient for several hours in contrast to a modern physician) and present...

(http://myblogonbeauty.blogspot.com/2007/09/which-foods-to-avoid-with-medications.html) posted at Beauty and Personality Grooming (http://myblogonbeauty.blogspot.com/), saying, We all have heard of the risk of ‘drug-drug-interaction’ when people are taking more than one medication for different ailments. Most of us are also aware that taking herbal supplements in combination with allopathic drugs is hazardous. But only a few people know that there are certain, potential food-drug combinations, which clash each other, reduce the effectiveness of the drug and cause adverse reaction and complications. So keeping a close watch on the foods and drinks that you tend to binge on would be ideal in such circumstances. Discuss it with your doctor. Tiffany Washko presents What Did You Think?

A person asked me about connection of food and allergy. Let's say you have got diarrhea (loose stools more than 3 times a day), crampy feelings in your tummy because of gas and intestinal movements causing nausea. And let's say you had similar conditions before, but did not know the reason. And today you are finally sure that the reason is clear - milk. Yeah, it happened exactly after you ate some cheese and drank two glasses of milk. So, this is allergy, you think. Is it?Well. Let's think a little. True, food allergy is the reaction of your immune system to some products (usually proteins) in certain foods. Check the small Food and Allergy quiz (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/food_allergy.htm) Food and Allergy quiz for wireless (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/food_allergy.wml)

What happens when you get food allergy? Several things. Bad response of your immune system to different products may cause the food allergy. Sometime food allergy causes severe disability or even death. Don’t be scared. That’s not so common. However, that happens. Some people are getting especially nasty anaphylactic reactions from such common foods as nuts or peanuts. Others might get the reaction after consuming eggs or milk.
Review of Medicexchange.

People asked me to review Medicexchange.com (http://www.medicexchange.com/). Let’s check it. So what can we see at the site?Well, I should say this is well designed web portal targeted toward the professionals in the Radiology (primarily radiologists, technicians and so on).The site provides software designed to help to solve the radiological problems. In the same time, the site has sections of the news and other helpful information.Let’s check one of the offers that pops up when you get onto the site:For me, software that costs $8400 looks a little bit expensive (Trauma Cad for example). I mean, if it would be a home application, it would be pricey. However, quality medical instruments cost a lot (not surprising). I used sometime some professional software that really costs thousands. Considering the cost of medical care in general, that does not look bad at all. TraumaCad allows pre-operative planning for orthopedic surgeons. Hmm, considering the benefits a surgeon could get, it might be very valuable tool. I guess patient safety could be really improved.A strength of Medicexchange.com is availability of the information you need to make a purchase of software. And the best part, that you can try the software for free to evaluate it (though that probably common for many types of software, for this price tag it is really valuable feature). I did not load any software, so not sure exactly about the deal. To do that you would need to contact the sales team.Once you open up Medex homepage, you will see special deals or promotions on new software. But, what is better, to the right and on the top, you have a list of informative features: Communities, Speakers' Corner, Forum Communities include: o Breast Imaging o Cardiac o Abdominal-Pelvic o Musculoskeletal o Thoracic o Neuro Well, I should admit I am not a radiologist, so I can not really compare and say that some software is better than the other. Yet, even if you’re not planning to shop for a program, it is worth to visit Medicexchange.com (http://www.medicexchange.com/) for resources related to Medical Imaging Technology and Radiology. What I found useful for me are the well-written articles from radiologists, which are not overly filled with specific hard-to-understand details. The articles are easy to comprehend for any medical professional – MD or not. Also you can get some newsletter, or just read the news related to Radiology. That sort of gives some global view of hot topics in Radiology (at least I think they are interesting topics). Though, the site is obviously not so hot for a regular patient with non-medical background. Okay. To conclude, better visit the site yourself. I liked it and probably you will like too.

That's partially a philosophical tip about dealing with IBS for some professions, partially an ad for Bowtrol Colon Cleanser. By the way author mention that the human body should have two or three good bowel movements per day in order to discharge waste. Hmm, maybe yes, maybe no. More than 4 (some doctors say 3) in a day is considered diarrhea. So, her advice is more close to diarrhea than to normal bowel movements. I would expect 1-2 is Okay. Medically speaking, constipation is defined as less than three bowel movements per week. Severe constipation is less than one bowel movement per week Hueina Su presents Homecoming to You: Re-connecting with Your Authentic Self (http://blog.beyondhorizoncoaching.com/2007/05/homecoming-to-you-re-connecting-with.html) posted at Intensive Care for the Nurturer's Soul (http://blog.beyondhorizoncoaching.com/), saying, Whenever we say we should or must do something or feel/behave in a certain way, we are judging ourselves. We are saying that there is something wrong with whatever we are currently feeling/doing, and that's why we need to change (for someone else's sake). When you judge yourself this way, either consciously or unconsciously, on a regular basis, you are denying your Authentic Self, and damaging your self-esteem.
Bariatric Surgery for Obesity

As you well know, obesity is a serious problem leading to multiple health and social consequences. Prevention programs are important for control of the obesity epidemic. Obesity concerns your body fat. Though just being overweight may mean that your weight came from fluids, muscle, bone, fat and other tissues. When you get more calories in your food than you use in your life activities, the excessive energy source is deposited as the body fat.Your genetics, regular overeating, foods with high-fat content and lack of physical activity may shift your metabolic balance toward fat accumulation. That’s not only causing tears when you look in your mirror, but also increases your risks of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis and some cancers. When preventive measures fail, the only choice left is some treatment. You obviously already know what the treatments are:Dietary TherapyIncreasing Physical ActivityBehavioral Therapy Drug TreatmentHowever, when this fail too, some surgery might be helpful.
Effects of Marijuana Abuse

You probably know that drug addiction is one of the nagging social issues. There are several classes of the addictive drugs:Depressants (barbiturate, benzodiazepines etc)Dissociative Anesthetics (ketamine, PCP) Hallucinogens (LSD, mescaline psilocybin)Opioids and Morphine Derivatives (codeine, heroin, morphine, opium, etc) Stimulants (Amphetamine, cocaine, MDMA, methamphetamine, nicotine)Other Compounds - anabolic steroids, inhalants - solvents , gasoline, glues, gases, aerosol propellants, nitrous oxide, nitrites, laughing gas, poppers, snappers, whippets an so on.What is about Cannabinoids (marijuana)? Is it dangerous?Actually, abusing marijuana may lead to impaired memory, learning and behavior. Long use might cause lung cancer and infections.I had asked Louise to write a little bit more about the herb: “The Effects of Marijuana Abuse It’s difficult to say if marijuana is an addictive drug or not. I know there is a lot of information on the internet regarding marijuana and its effects on the body, but a lot of it is propaganda and highly opinionated or biased information. Let me try to give you some information about marijuana abuse without leaning towards one side or another. Sometimes all you need is an unbiased answer, especially if you’re wondering if you’re addicted to the substance or not. Marijuana comes from the seeds and flowers of the Hemp plant. For centuries, this plant has been grown, dried, and smoked for medicinal and recreational purposes. The active ingredient in marijuana is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) and this substance causes changes in the brain. In addition to THC, there are more than 400 chemicals in marijuana, and the brain and the fat stores in your body easily soak all of them up. This led some researchers to believe that since THC is stored in the fat cells, the drug has a longer-lasting effect on your body. When you smoke marijuana, you’ll find that your reflexes are slower and your coordination is off. Five minutes can seem like five hours. You become sleepy and relaxed. Marijuana also stimulates your appetite. Some studies have shown that you can still suffer the effects of the drug up to 36 hours later.

Welcome to the April 25, 2007 edition of all things medical. Again there are plenty of submissions. And again I probably will not comment extensively. There are some submissions from old and trusted blogs (like from Deb Serani) as well as from some new sites. Check it yourself. GrrlScientist presents Insect Cells Can Grow Influenza Vaccine (http://scienceblogs.com/grrlscientist/2007/04/insect_cells_can_grow_influenz.php) posted at Living the Scientific Life (http://scienceblogs.com/grrlscientist/), saying, One of the biggest challenges to producing flu vaccine lies in the fact that so far, scientists have had to grow it in hens' eggs. Well, as far as I know viruses can be grown in the cell cultures (I did it myself with adenoviruses and retroviruses). Then let’s say you inactivate the bug with some formalin and mix with some adjuvant – and voila – the vaccine is ready (I mean that’s in theory). Even better – to grow just some transformed cells that produce just some proteins from viruses – core or envelope – whatever you need. Insect cells are also used for decades in cell cultures (to grow baculoviruses if I remember it right). At least I remember reading some detailed protocols how to do that and thinking if I can apply that to my scientific project. Yet, hmm, I did not know that the insect cells (or eggs for that matter) are so critical to the flu vaccine. Well, I know that I know nothing (as Pluto said long ago) biotechBarry Mahfood presents Making a Better Fit through Nanotech (http://thepriceofrice.blogspot.com/2007/03/making-better-fit-through-nanotech.html) posted at The Price of Rice! Interesting, though nothing unexpected diseaseAndrea presents Japanese Encephalitis (http://www.travelvaccination.com.au/japanese-encephalitis/) posted at Travel Vaccinations (http://www.travelvaccination.com.au). There are several types of encephalitis (not Just Japanese) caused by viruses and let you never get one. Too many complications (if you survive, of course ). healthDr. Todd Narson presents Dr. T’s Guidelines To Reduce High Cholesterol High Triglycerides (and you’ll also lose weight too!!) (http://naturalsportsmedicine.blogspot.com/2007/01/dr-ts-guidelines-to-reduce-high.html) posted at Natural Sports Medicine Blog (http://naturalsportsmedicine.blogspot.com/index.html), saying, So now I can attest that by following my guidelines for lowering cholesterol and triglycerides, I have lowered both numbers signiicantly and are now well within the normal range. It works, but are you dedicated enough to your health to do it? They will work if you are willing to work at it too. Healthfully Yours, Dr. T That's mostly well known old wisdom tips.
Diaper Rash

Diaper Rash Quiz (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/diaper_rash.htm) Diaper Rash Quiz for wireless device (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/diaper_rash.wml) Let's say you change your baby's diaper. Oops, the skin is bright red on the bottom. What is this? And what should you do now? Well, red skin (content/view/228/29/) is probably dermatitis (skin inflammation) and what your baby has is most likely diaper rash.I had asked Louise to write more about diaper rush. Also check the quizzes. Diaper Rash If you're here, it's because your baby has diaper rash. I know you feel guilty about it and certainly your child's little bum is sore, but you probably haven't done anything wrong. Just because your baby has a diaper rash doesn’t mean you’ve been a neglectful or bad parent. Diaper rash happens to every baby at some point. Any number of things might cause the rash; a reaction to powders or lotions, chemicals used in the material of the diaper, or diapers that are too small and chafe against your baby. What makes diaper rash worse is the very nature of what the diaper is designed to do: A diaper holds in moisture and waste in a warm place, which is a breeding ground for bacteria. The rash starts, but you may only notice it once the rash is very red. It can even get so bad that the skin blisters.Your baby’s skin will never be perfectly smooth and free from rash 100% of the time. Diaper rash is a very normal part of your baby’s life. There are steps you can take to reduce the number of flare-ups and possibly even eliminate diaper rash.Change diapers frequently and don’t leave your baby for extended periods of time in a soiled diaper. A newborn urinates every two hours or so. As the child grows older, the time between changes will become longer and longer. With disposable diapers, find the brand that fits your baby the best. As I mentioned before, your child's rash could be a simple matter of the way the diaper conforms to your baby’s body. If you think your baby is having an allergic reaction to the diaper or one of the skin care products you are using, try different brands until you find one that works better. If you use cloth diapers, a little bit of vinegar in the rinse cycle might help remove the residue from alkaline irritants. Unscented wipes are usually the best to use, since some of the fragrances tend to cause allergic reactions. When you’re cleaning your baby, it’s important that you don’t rub the skin or the rash until its all gone. Wiping your baby’s already-sensitive bottom can irritate the skin more. Try using a bulb syringe to wash off your baby and pat the skin dry with a soft towel. Let your baby “air out” too. Leave your child's diaper off for a little while to help dry out the rash.

Caesarean section. Quiz

Do you have the scar like a raised bumpy line across your belly? So many women have a small scar in the lower part of their tummy nowadays, the scar that came after cesarean section. By the way, “caesarean section” is also a right spelling of the word. That’s the British Caesarean versus USA Cesarean difference.Roman Emperor Caesar supposedly was delivered by this method. Yet, there is a controversy, since his mother stayed alive (in the past, the section was performed to save the baby when the mother had died). In general doing everything natural supposedly should be better for your health (since we were designed naturally). Hence, vaginal delivery should be a preferred way of birth. However, there are cases when naturally delivery is impossible or harmful. Anyway, you should remember that not every cesarean section is necessary and the risks do not always outweigh the benefits of surgery. Please, check the quizzes:Caesarean section quiz (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/cesarean_section.htm) Caesarean section quiz for wireless device (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/cesarean_section.wml)I have asked Louis to write more about C-section:“Cesarean Section Thirty or forty years ago, delivering babies through cesarean section was not as common a procedure as it is today. These days, a pregnant woman having a cesarean in the delivery room is as common as a tonsillectomy or an appendectomy. I would venture to say that the use of cesarean section has become a little too common. My mother certainly didn’t have one and didn’t have the choice! So many couples who have busy lives now schedule when their babies are brought into the world through cesarean section. The procedure has become one of convenience rather than one where the original intent was to reduce the risks of childbirth to mother and child. Don’t get me wrong; cesarean section is still used to help in childbirth, but before you decide to have it done, you should be aware of the pros and cons of having a cesarean section. A cesarean section is major surgery and carries a greater risk of death than a vaginal birth. However, if you have a heart condition or other medical condition that would make a natural birth risky, then the cesarean section might a good option. As with any other type of major surgery, there is the threat of infection or a loss of large amounts of blood. General anesthesia can sometimes cause pneumonia. You might also have an adverse reaction to the anesthesia where your blood pressure drops rapidly during the surgery. If your baby’s due date was not calculated correctly, then the baby is at risk for being born prematurely. Studies have shown that many babies born through cesarean section develop breathing problems. The anesthesia given to the mother can also affect the baby, causing the child more stress than necessary. A vaginal birth sets off certain signals in the newborn’s body, and a cesarean would eliminate some of the stimulation vital to those first few minutes or...

Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome and Acid

There are many reasons why you can have sour taste in you mouth. One of the most common is obviously gastro-oesophageal reflux. Look: GERD (content/view/198/2/) Then people start to talk about acidity. For example look what Aparna wrote about acidity (content/view/276/9/) And then, if you have a stomach ulcer, you might also think about hyperacidity, which always was considered the case, though in the last 10-20 years it was shown that up to 75 % of stomach ulcers (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/pepticulcer.html) are caused by H. Pylory (or at least associated with the bug). This is, by the way, why we treat the peptic ulcers with antibiotics nowadays.Yet there are some rare conditions.I have asked Louise to talk more about one entity: Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome quiz (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/zollinger_ellison.htm) Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome quiz for wireless device (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/zollinger_ellison.wml) “Zollinger-Ellison SyndromeZollinger-Ellison syndrome is a condition where you have several tumors that form in the pancreas and the upper part of the small intestines known as the duodenum. These tumors are unlike any other, in that they are usually harder to get rid of. What happens with this syndrome is that tumors form and causes your stomach to secrete more acid than normal. This, in turn, results in ulcers and open wounds in the stomach. Sounds less than pleasant, doesn't it. The only treatment available is for your doctor to prescribe medications that will reduce the acid and allow the ulcers to heal. In extreme cases, surgery is called for. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is an infliction that doctors have yet to discover the cause. I've tried to pin down the cause myself, but haven't yet been able to. Some of the symptoms you might encounter are very similar to a peptic ulcer. You will have burning in your upper abdomen, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and bleeding along the digestive tract. Because your stomach is so sensitive, you will more than likely lose weight. (Some people think this is the best part of having the syndrome!) Even if you were to take some of the over-the-counter remedies for heartburn and excess acid, you wouldn't get much relief, unfortunately. If you have a persistent burning in your stomach and any of the other symptoms, you should talk to your doctor immediately. If you try treating yourself with medicines such as Zantec, you could be putting yourself at more risk. In effect, what you are doing is masking the other symptoms and your condition could worsen.Your doctor will probably run a number of tests. The first is a blood test to check for increased levels of gastrin. This is the hormone secreted by the pancreas that triggers acid in the stomach. You may also have to have an upper...

Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease and quiz

There are many reasons that may cause a rash on your or your child's skin. For example look: Red Skin. (content/view/228/29/) I have asked Louise to review one of the reasons, also check the quizzes: Hand-foot-mouth disease quiz (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/hand_foot_mouth_disease.htm) Hand-foot-mouth disease quiz for wireless device (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/hand_foot_mouth_disease.wml) Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease One of the most common diseases of childhood is Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease. I know you try to stress how important it is for your child to wash his hands before eating or after using the restroom at school, but you and I both know that children rarely wash their hands unless we're standing over them. Your child doesn't understand how important it is to wash his hands frequently. I'll tell you the symptoms of Hand-Foot-Mouth disease so you know what to watch for. Along with fever, sore throat, headache, and crankiness in babies and toddlers, your child will have red blisters on his tongue, mouth, and palms or soles of his feet. Now you know why it's a disease named after the hands, the feet and the mouth, don't you! Your child might get all of the symptoms or any combination of them, so if you think your child has Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease, take him to the doctor for confirmation. With Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease, there is an incubation period of three to seven days. Usually, by the time you realize your child has Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease, he'll have already had it for a week or so with no outward signs.Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease is one of those viral infections that is highly contagious and it can live for a long time on surfaces before being picked up. Your child is also exposed to many other children who might have the virus and who are equally negligent about their hygiene when their parents aren't around to tell them to wash their hands or cover their mouths or noses when they cough or sneeze. Although Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease primarily affects younger children, you and everyone else out there can catch it as well. Anyone can get this virus, and it is spread in the same manner as that with the children. There isn't a specific treatment either. If your child gets it, just try to control the fever and make him comfortable. Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease is a pretty mild disease and there is not much you can do except to let it run its course. The biggest thing to watch for is dehydration. If your child has blisters in his mouth, it might make eating and drinking difficult. If he does become severely dehydrated (remember, you can only go 3 days without water!), your doctor will have to give your child fluids through an IV.

Vision loss and Glaucoma

There are many reasons why you can loose your vision.I have asked Louise to describe one of them - glaucoma. Also check the quizzes:Glaucoma quiz (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/glaucoma.htm) Glaucoma quiz for wireless device (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/glaucoma.wml) Glaucoma Glaucoma is a common eye problem. I'm sure you've heard many people talk about it. This particular affliction is a sneaky one, too. Most people don't realize they have glaucoma until it is too late. Glaucoma is probably one the leading causes of vision loss. There are two forms of glaucoma: Open-angle and angle-closure. Open-angle glaucoma is the one most people think of when they think of the problem. This condition gradually affects your vision until you can't see anymore. Glaucoma is the name for a disease that is made up of many smaller problems with the eyes. At the back of each of your eyes is the optic nerve. This nerve is comprised of many smaller nerves that form the overall bundle. Think of the optic nerve as a cable wire. Inside the wire is a bunch of smaller wires all bound together. These nerves are what carry the visual impulses from the retina (the back part of the eyeball) to the brain. Blank spots in your vision begin to happen when the individual nerves in the optic nerve start to deteriorate. You might notice that your peripheral vision (the vision that you have from the corners of your eyes) isn't what it used to be and that your field of vision is narrowing. Eventually, left untreated, glaucoma will continue to eat away at the optic nerve and your range of vision will shrink to nothing. Your eye's shape is maintained by internal pressure. This pressure is called intraocular pressure . Your eye is a hollow ball like an inflated balloon. When that internal pressure rises, the optic nerve can be damaged. Unlike a balloon, though, your eye is filled with fluid, not air. The fluid is called the vitreous. Your eye also has a main chamber where you'll find the vitreous and another chamber at the front of the eye filled with the aqueous humor. The aqueous humor is constantly circulating in that front chamber, flushing out debris and keeping the lens moist. The new fluid created at the same time as the old fluid is drained balances the pressure. When one or the other slows down or stops, the pressure backs up.

Spine health

Ellen Willett from Spine-health.com (http://spine-health.com/) has asked me to review their site. This is what they write about it: Spine-health is a peer reviewed medical journal for patients with back pain and spinal disorders. Spine-health.com is purely a patient education website. Our mission is simply to provide the most comprehensive and unbiased, professional information to help people with back pain. All articles are written by medical professionals and have been peer reviewed by the site’s medical advisors prior to publication. Well, what can I add? The site looks very informative and professional. In the same time the authors write the articles that really targeted to a layperson. Though, I should say, the language is a little bit academic. Yet it is easy to understand for everybody. You may find information about the problems bothering you. You may find information about spinal fusion surgery as well as about mattress choice. There is also information about clinical trials for spinal problems. There are also good, interesting animations, explaining common spine problems. I really like that. So, if you have spinal questions, this site is worth to visit, to find answers to your questions.

Excessive thirst and diabetes insipidus

Do you feel thirsty? Very very thirsty? Is that a problem? Actually this could be a normal thing. However, if you drink too much and not just drink, but have persistent urge to drinking, it might be a medical or psychic disorder. The very first (and dangerous one) thing that comes to mind is hyperglycemia - high blood sugar. And high blood sugar is commonly a sign of diabetes mellitus. Diabetes is infamous for excessive thirst and urination. Other reasons for extreme thirst include such common things as sweating during exercise (or crossing a remote desert by walk, just to mention), salty or spicy foods, not drinking enough water.Medical things would include:Diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2 Diabetes insipidus Conditions after significant blood loss (due to trauma let's say) Infectious and other diseases that cause:Fever with profuse sweatingDiarrheaVomitingAdvanced problems with liver, kidney or heart. The disorders of these organs may shift fluid from your bloodstream into other tissues, causing edema and blood volume depletion. Since the mechanism of thirst reacts to the lack of fluids in the bloodstream first of all, the thirst comes. The same is true for sepsis, severe infections, significant traumas and burns.Psychogenic polydipsia, is sometime a result of a mental disorder. The patient drinks excessive water just because. Do not forget that some medications may cause thirst. Check if you use:Anticholinergics (Think about Benztropine - Cogentin, Belladonna alkaloids, Scopolamine , Atropine , Dicyclomine, Flavoxate , Ipratropium and so on. Though they usually cause urinary retention, but also fever and dry mouth. This were the thirst probably comes from)Diuretics (water pills)Phenothiazines (Chlorpromazine, Thorazine, Largactil, Promazine, etc.) -antipsychotic drugs. Demeclocycline (tetracycline antibiotics)SteroidsLithium Ecstasy - this illicit drug causes thirst. And many other drugs that might cause dehydration – the list is too long.Other reasons for feeling thirsty include: hot flashes sunburns, extreme dieting, Anorexia nervosa, brain disorders affecting hypothalamic area, stroke, brain tumor, overactive thyroid glands (hyperthyroiditis), Conn’s syndrome, Barter’s syndrome, Acromegaly, Cushing syndrome I have asked Louis to talk about one of the reasons of the thirst: Also check the quizzes about diabetes insipidus:Diabetes insipidus quiz (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/diabetes_insipidus.htm) Diabetes insipidus quiz - for wireless device. (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/diabetes_insipidus.wml) Diabetes Insipidus What is diabetes insipidus? I know right away you’re thinking either Type 1 or 2 diabetes, diseases we hear about every day. Since you say that you’ve been getting up two or three times a night to urinate and requent urination is the main indication of diabetes insipidus, I’d say there’s a good chance you should look into this illness. Some other complications associated with diabetes insipidus are:...

Cervical cancer and HPV vaccination

Have you recently followed the discussions about HPV vaccination (http://www.cdc.gov/std/hpv/STDFact-HPV-vaccine.htm)?Cervical cancer quiz (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/cervical_cancer.htm) Cervical cancer quiz for wireless device (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/cervical_cancer.wml) Just remember that you put your at higher risk for cervical cancer if you have many sexual partners and start sex early in life. All of that puts you at risk of being infected with sexually transmitted diseases. The infectious diseases cause inflammation, which, in turn, pushes the cervical cells to change. Also, substances in the tobacco smoke and hormones (from birth control pills and or from being pregnant many times) promote the cancerous changes in the cells. Having HPV on top of that is the recipe for developing cervical cancer, since HPV gets into the cellular DNA and changes it. Not all types of HPV are linked to cancer (for example 6 and 11 cause just warts), but some are (16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 68, 73, 82). Also, getting HIV infection decreases your immunity and makes you prone to different cancers, including cervical. And one of the ways to get HIV – is through the promiscuous sexual contacts. So, as you can see – this is an ancient recommendation – be modest and you will be better.Pre-cancer conditions (dysplasia and the like) are curable when followed up and treated on time.

Chicken Pox

If your child has been feeling so-so for the last few days having runny nose and a cough, and this morning you see him covered with 500 small blisters all over, what could it be? Very possibly, chickenpox.Check the quiz Chicken Pox Quiz (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/chickenpox.htm) Chicken Pox Quiz for wireless device (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/chickenpox.wml) I have asked Louise to describe the disorder: Chicken PoxYou probably are reading this because you have a child sick with chicken pox. It's a very common childhood sickness. The actual medical term for it is varicella-zoster, although chicken pox is much easier to say! Chicken pox is something almost all of us have had when we were little. You may have been young and not remember having those annoying red dots that itched horribly. I know that having chicken pox is one of my earliest memories of being sick, and I think my brother had the chicken pox worse than I did. You will see the first spots on your abdomen or sometimes the back or face, and then they will spread from there. At first, the rash might look like mosquito bites. These thin little blisters are full of fluid that eventually burst, dry up, and then crust over with a scab. The rash comes in waves over the course of two to four days. If your child has eczema, the rash might be more severe than that of other kids. Your child might complain of a sore throat, fever, stomachache or headache a couple of days before the rash shows.Chicken pox is very contagious, and children who have been exposed to it will start to show symptoms about two weeks later. Normally, a person has only one infection of chicken pox in their lifetime and it is always better that it happen when children are young. As a kid, I can recall my mom talking to other moms in the neighborhood and saying that they should get their kids to play with me while I had chicken pox. The other kids would get sick too and then the sickness would be over with! I'm not sure if that's sound advice, but it made sense at the time. Having chicken pox as an adult can cause severe complications. When your child is 12 to 18 months old, your doctor or your child's pediatrician will tell you that you need to get your child vaccinated for chicken pox. The vaccination is no guarantee that your child won't get chicken pox; however, the vaccination can reduce the severity of the sickness. If your child becomes...

Stroke and Carotid Endarterectomy

Did you ever experienced numbness? You probably did. Well, there is numbness and there is NUMBNESS.The big one often comes when a person have stroke. What is stroke?A stroke is the neurological disorder that happens if blood supply to your brain is significantly reduced. Lack of oxygen and nutrients kill the brain cells. Oops – you get loss of the brain control over you body, you see.You might start to think that you have a stroke if suddenly you get some of the following symptoms (note the word “suddenly”):Numbness and weakness of the muscles of your face, neck, arm or leg. Paralysis is a complete loss of strength in limb or muscle group.Difficulties with speech Difficulties in understanding other’s speech Blurred or double visionLoss of coordination DizzinessUnsteady gaitSevere headache or unusual headacheNausea and vomiting Decreased consciousnessMemory lossLoss of orientation Changes in perception of realityConfusionComaThough there are many other disorders that might start with the same symptoms (let’s say botulism will start with the same double vision and paralysis, and there are plenty of other reasons for headaches), still one of the first thing to think about is the stroke.Stroke quiz (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/stroke.htm) Stroke quiz – for wireless device (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/stroke.wml) Types of stroke:Ischemic Stroke – embolic (when a blood clot or other embolus from somewhere - usually heart - dislodges and goes into your brain, interrupting blood flow) and thrombotic stroke (a blood-clot clogs the arteries) Large arteries thrombosis usually happens due to atherosclerosis (plaques build up). Small arteries thrombosis often happens due to high blood pressure.Hemorrhagic Stroke happens due to a blown blood vessel in the brain. That might happen in people with high blood pressure or cerebral aneurysms. An aneurysm is an out-pouching of the weak arterial wall.Transient ischemic attack (TIA) happens after temporary interruption of blood flow to brain. It’s just shorter than stroke. The borderline is 24 hours. If it is gone in 24 hours (because the blood flow restored on its own) – that’s TIA, if it still there, it is a stroke.TIA puts you at risk for full-blown stroke. You need to realize that when develops, stroke requires emergent treatment, and even more important stroke might be prevented by following reasonable rules:Stop smoking (if you do) Control blood pressureControl your cholesterol levelControl blood sugar (if you have diabetes)Watch your weight and dietExercise Avoid stressAvoid binge drinking Avoid street drugs, especially cocaine that causes blood vessel’s spasmSimple, huh? Just common sense. That’s not a 100% foolproof recipe, but may significantly reduce your risks.Healthy foods decreasing risk of stroke (mostly because they reduce cholesterol level and, hence, plaque buildup) include:Fruits, vegetables, folate vitamin, antioxidants, fiber-rich food, soy, omega-3 fatty acids (coming from fish...

Face Swelling

Did you ever have a face swelling? Did you wonder what this is?A woman asked me what her facial swelling may mean. There are multiple disorders which can cause the swelling of your face. However, when she describes that she did not notice any other symptoms and her facial swelling happens in the morning (as the swelling she describes puffy eyes only), I might suggest couple of disorders - some kidney problem or some type of allergic reactions – cold urticaria or C1 inhibitors deficiency. Also, some blood cell tumors (or other tumors blocking veins or lymph vessels) may decrease the lymphatic outflow from face and cause the facial swelling. It could be obesity obviously. But that doesn’t' usually fluctuate much from night to day. However let's look what other problems may be over thereFace Swelling Quiz (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/facial_swelling.htm) Face Swelling Quiz – for wireless device (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/facial_swelling.wml)

Have you noticed hair loss recently? Are you wondering what’s going on? There are multiple reasons for hair loss. Some are more common than others. The treatments are also numerous (which often means there is no really ideal cure). Minoxidil is one of the drugs that were used for hypertension (high blood pressure) treatment. In late 80s the side effect of hair growth was noticed and taken into account. How exactly minoxidil works is still not very clear. However, the drug was introduced in 1988 as the medication against hair loss. I have asked Louise to review some of the hair loss reasons:

I dared to approach and to ask the Lady in Mask about the interview. She kindly agreed and found the time to answer the questions on conditions of anonymity. Considering how little time a doc has (especially family doctor), that was very kind. Also, since I was interested in some topics about the family residency issues, I asked them too.
You probably heard about mesothelioma What a terrible disease. Yeah, it is really dreadful (though rare). Also, mesothelioma is very profitable from a lawyer’s point of view. Easy money, since they already made the class suite. This is why you probably hear about the disease so often. Lung cancer is a terrible cancer, a killer number one among other types of cancers, However, lung cancer risk was connected to tobacco smoking heavily, and quitting tobacco smoking significantly reduces your chances to get the disease. Yet, majority of people you know and who will have lung problems will die (if die from lung complications) due to such disease a pneumonia. The disease is much more common in population than any cancer. Elderly are especially vulnerable. Daniel, a medical student from Brazil, who recently had pulmonary rotations in his medical school, gives you some more insight into the disease:

Do you wheeze a lot? Could that be asthma? Check with your doctor. However for your knowledge, let’s talk about asthma one more time: Asthma (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve db=PubMed list_uids=2382600 dopt=Abstract) is a rising phenomenon (http://www.armymedicine.army.mil/hc/healthtips/06/asthmarising.cfm) in the Western countries. Many scientists believe that primarily the air pollution is the cause of asthma epidemic in children. However, there is another theory: lack of parasites coupled with increased number of environmental toxins is the cause of asthma. Partially the theory is supported by the knowledge that Infection with hookworms may prevent asthma. And in some studies it was shown that lack of different gut parasites may be the trigger for increased incidence of eczema, asthma, hay fever and other allergic disorders. Daniel, a Medical Student from Brazil, writes about asthma:

Being a medical student at that time I was trying to help somehow. Yet, after reading a lot of literature about the disease, I understood that there is no ultimate cure available. Felt Helpless. We know that the disease is an autoimmune disorder. But, as with majority of other autoimmune disorders, the primary cause of the disease is still unknown. Since I did PhD in Immunology besides plain MD, I was dreaming about finding an ultimate cure. Alas. We obviously know a lot about the immune mechanism of the disease. Yet, they look more like consequences of some unknown cause, than the primary reason.

Depression and Heart Disease Quiz

Have you ever being depressed?Depressed mood is not so uncommon. Routine daily life can make you happy or vise versa. However, it becomes the problem, when depressed mood persists for significant length of time.Depending on the set of symptoms and on the length of the period, the depressed mood could mean a disorder, even such one as major depression.depression+heart problem (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/Depression_heart_attack.htm) QuizSome non-psychiatric diseases also depress mood. Which would not be a surprise, right? However they may also provoke the depression as the disorder. One of the researcher’s findings was that heart disease makes people more likely to suffer depression. And, in opposite way, depression puts you at the greater risk for developing heart disease. Also the risk of death after a heart attack is higher in depressed patients.Since the heart disease is leading cause of death in the western countries, including U.S., the significance of depression during heart disease is also high.

Somebody asked me what are blackheads and whiteheads.Acne occurs when tiny pores on the surface of the skin become blocked. Skin follicles contain hair and oily glands. The follicle opens with a pore. If too much oil is produced, it might block the pore. Also skin debris may add to the blockage. Bacteria (Propionibacterium) start to grow. The blockage (plug) is named comedone.Whiteheads are white bumps with accumulation of oil in pores.Blackheads are dark spots caused by the small plug in the pore. Whiteheads become blackheads when melanin (skin pigment) is oxidized.

Continued from part 1 and 2.So, let’s discuss the clinical trial itselfSince the US drug market is the largest one, big companies put most of their efforts over there. Several months of blockbuster drug sales cover all the enormous expenses from the several or even several tens of projects involving failed drugs. Yet, the United States have one of the toughest process of the drug approvals. No wonder that a development of a blockbuster drug costs almost a billion dollars these days. The Research Ethics in the United States included many milestones, beginning from the establishing of Food and Drug Administration. In the second part of the XX century the Thalidomide Tragedy and the Tuskegee Syphilis Study were among the prominent ones. Also, Willowbrook and the Jewish Chronic Disease Hospital Studies were notorious.

What do you know about COPD and lung diseases?

If all your alveoli would be opened and placed on flat surface, the covered area would be around half of a football field. That's how much surface of the barrier membrane between blood and air you need in order to survive and function as you do now.You lungs remove carbon dioxide form blood However, in order to exchange the gases, you lungs should perform a mount load of work. And what is important somehow the air should be delivered to the surface of those alveoli and somehow the air should be removed. Breathing is such a vital function.Shortness of breath is a thing that you quickly become aware of.To deliver the oxygen to the alveoli, a complicated system exists. The air first moves through you nose or mouth into your throat, that into larynx, then into trachea and then into bronchi. Bronchi divide, divide, divide like the branches in a tree. They divide 18 or more times. Eventually they become tiny-tiny. Those tiny air tubes deliver the air to the final destination - alveoli, and provide the way to move the air back...COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a collective name for several diseases, characterized by obstruction to the airflow. There are also some other diseases, that affect lungsTo learn more about them, try this small quiz. http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/COPD.htm (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/COPD.htm)Wireless:http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/COPD_WML.wml (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/COPD_WML.wml) Trackback (http://rdoctor.com/medical_link/wp-trackback.php?p=20) Medicine (http://technorati.com/tag/medicine) lung (http://technorati.com/tag/lung) lung+infection (http://technorati.com/tag/lung+infection) COPD (http://technorati.com/tag/COPD) tuberculosis (http://technorati.com/tag/tuberculosis) lung+cancer (http://technorati.com/tag/lung+cancer) mesothelioma (http://technorati.com/tag/mesothelioma) cough (http://technorati.com/tag/cough) sputum (http://technorati.com/tag/sputum) trachea (http://technorati.com/tag/trachea) asthma (http://technorati.com/tag/asthma) bronchitis (http://technorati.com/tag/bronchitis) cancer (/index.php?s=cancer), disease (/index.php?s=disease), symptom (/index.php?s=symptom), treatment (/index.php?s=treatment), diagnosis (/index.php?s=diagnosis), diagnose (/index.php?s=diagnose), diabetes (/index.php?s=diabetes), medical+quiz (/index.php?s=medical+quiz), problems (/index.php?s=problems), doctor (/index.php?s=doctor), pain (/index.php?s=pain), swelling (/index.php?s=swelling), herpes (/index.php?s=herpes), itch (/index.php?s=itch), health+quiz (/index.php?s=health+quiz), health+research (/index.php?s=health+research), health+care (/index.php?s=health+care), medical (/index.php?s=medical), tip (/index.php?s=tip), tips (/index.php?s=tips), problem (/index.php?s=problem), challenge (/index.php?s=challenge), links (/index.php?s=links), intrasite (/index.php?s=intrasite), symptom+check (/index.php?s=symptom+check), categorizing (/index.php?s=categorizing), biotech (/index.php?s=biotech)

3 points to know about psych illness in elderly.

Aging brings many unpleasant things. And actually, one of the bad things, that aging causes, is the assumption by other people that aging inevitably means decrease in mental activity and mental deterioration. For example, forgetfulness is universally assumed as the norm for an older adult. However it is just a stereotype. And following this stereotype may often mean a delay in the proper care.To avoid the pitfalls, you should remember the following 3 points:1. Many elderly can maintain mental sharpness throughout entire life2. Changes of behavior and mood might be sign of illness.3. A physician should check if there is a psychiatric problem. Do not assume it is just a sign of aging. Do not miss a disease. To check what you know about psychiatric disorders in older adults, try the following psych quiz: http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/Psychiatry1.htm (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/Psychiatry1.htm)Wireless:http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/Psychiatry1_WML (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/Psychiatry1_WML) Trackback (http://rdoctor.com/medical_link/wp-trackback.php?p=20)Medicine (http://technorati.com/tag/medicine) psychiatry (http://technorati.com/tag/psychiatry) depression (http://technorati.com/tag/depression) dementia (http://technorati.com/tag/dementia) delirium (http://technorati.com/tag/delirium) brain (http://technorati.com/tag/brain) quiz (http://technorati.com/tag/quiz) hallucinations (http://technorati.com/tag/hallucinations) delusions (http://technorati.com/tag/delusions) virus (http://technorati.com/tag/virus) alzheimer (http://technorati.com/tag/alzheimer) aging (http://technorati.com/tag/aging) cancer (/index.php?s=cancer), disease (/index.php?s=disease), symptom (/index.php?s=symptom), treatment (/index.php?s=treatment), diagnosis (/index.php?s=diagnosis), diagnose (/index.php?s=diagnose), diabetes (/index.php?s=diabetes), medical+quiz (/index.php?s=medical+quiz), problems (/index.php?s=problems), doctor (/index.php?s=doctor), pain (/index.php?s=pain), swelling (/index.php?s=swelling), herpes (/index.php?s=herpes), itch (/index.php?s=itch), health+quiz (/index.php?s=health+quiz), health+research (/index.php?s=health+research), health+care (/index.php?s=health+care), medical (/index.php?s=medical), tip (/index.php?s=tip), tips (/index.php?s=tips), problem (/index.php?s=problem), challenge (/index.php?s=challenge), links (/index.php?s=links), intrasite (/index.php?s=intrasite), symptom+check (/index.php?s=symptom+check), categorizing (/index.php?s=categorizing), biotech (/index.php?s=biotech)

Learn by Practice

I used to learn something by reading mostly.Yet, I found that, it is much easier to memorize the material if you also learn something in addition to reading by listening lectures, doing home work, and especially practicing, . One of the good ways to imprint the knowledge into your brain is by checking your knowledge with tests. Solving tests pushes you into active state. You not only passively scan the information; you anyway need to aks yourself the same questions while looking for the answers. Then you also pay more attention to the things that otherwise you might miss or just walked by. During the next round of reading, you will definitely pay the attention to the information, which was included in the questions.Memorizing by doing and practicing is much more efficient and there are deep intrinsic neurological mechanisms that explain how it happens. We made some quizzes for the Medical Knowledge (index.php?option=com_content task=category sectionid=11 id=58 Itemid=40). Majority of them could be solved by a layperson. Even if you do not know the answer, you may try to guess and next time you will know it for sure.If you have wireless PDA or Internet-enabled phone, try to use the following quizzes (index.php?option=com_content task=view id=147 Itemid=40). They are made in WML format.

Well. They probably do not. Unless, you agree yourself. At a point I worked in the pharmaceutical research. While studying medicine and doing medical research, I knew some rough ideas about the drug development process. I knew something about 3 phases of the trials and so on.However, I did not realize how complex the process actually is. There are actually 4 phases of just clinical trials, and several more before that. So if you are interested how they test drugs on you, let's in brief discuss the process.Trackback URL: http://rdoctor.com (http://rdoctor.com/)

Recently I had performed a small survey on my web-site. Three quarters of the participants said they agree that searching health information on the internet is a good idea.Similar surveys performed by Women's Journal on-line, shows that half of the women seek the medical knowledge on the Web. One of the trends in the patient's management is relying on self-education and second opinions. The second opinion may prevent you from unnecessary and costly procedures and treatments. A recent discussion on an AOL forum Should we use the Internet to self-diagnose medical conditions? reveals that at least half of patients recheck their medical information on-line. Notes Carie, the discussion participant, ...I have spent over a million pounds in taxes in the UK and I have not had a doctor who shows any sign of competence, interest or engagement since the 1960s. Thank God we can access information and engage in dialogue with others on the Internet... Writes another discussion participant: ...On one of our visits it was found that Pat had a very low iron level in her blood and as a result was unable to donate. She was advised to see her own GP, this she did and was put on Iron Tablets! I researched on the Internet and there were a lot of pointers indicating the beginnings of Cancer. Like a fool I failed to mention this to her for the obvious reasons. 5 months later in Feb 2001 she found a small lump in her breast, this turned out to be cancer, she had a Mastectomy followed by Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy...I have lost my lovely wife who may have survived if GP's had bothered to read her notes...
http://www.symptomat.com (http://www.symptomat.com/) If liquid (bile) stored in the gallbladder hardens into stone, that's what we talking about. The bile helps to digest fats. Made in your, liver the bile is stored in the gallbladder until your dinner (or supper, whatever). Then it goes through the common bile duct (that looks like a pinkish-green straw for drinks) into your small bowel, where the fatty food arrived. Water, cholesterol, bile salts, bilirubin and other things is what the bile is. There is also some garbage that the liver rids off - different deactivated poisons and substances that the liver throws away into the bowels. Bile salts dissolve the fat. When there is dis-balance of cholesterol, bile salts, and bilirubin bile hardens like stone.Gallstones might be small large and everything in between. From sand to an egg. Here I made a test for you. Check you knowledge about gallstones. Train your brain.http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/Gallstones.htm (http://rdoctor.com/Quiz/Gallstones.htm)
