False rumors have been flying. We’re being asked “Are you closing?” Since I’m answering this question every day, I’ll do it here in detail.

ReUse Action IS NOT CLOSING!

I repeat, ReUse Action IS NOT CLOSING!

In fact, we’ve never been busier. We had one of our biggest sales days in ten years this past Saturday. We own our building. We’re hiring. We continue to work on our core businesses, yes BUSINESSES. We’re not going anywhere.

The rumor that we’re closing derives from two recent business shutdowns in Buffalo:

Buffalo ReUse at 296 East Ferry Street – CLOSED!

Gothic City at 1940 Niagara Street – CLOSED!

The two similar remaining businesses in Buffalo are Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore and ReUse Action.</>

Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, two stores located at 501 Amherst Street and 1675 South Park Avenue – NOT CLOSING!

ReUse Action’s store at 980 Northampton Street – NOT CLOSING!

All these businesses are completely independent.

We’ll continue to provide Western New York with house parts, antiques, barn wood, reclaimed insulation, custom furniture and furnishings, carpentry and other building services, specialty demolition, material reclamation, consulting, pickup of donated materials, providing affordable space to creative people etc.

With everyone’s help, we continue to put materials and people back to work in our community.

We started Buffalo ReUse in 2006. We haven’t been associated with them since 2011. ReUse Action’s been in business for more than ten years. We’ve been located at 980 Northampton Street for seven years. We have fifty art, craft and small business tenants in our building. We’re growing.

We’re in business to stay.

I still remember the voice mail he first left on my phone during Buffalo ReUse days, when he called inquiring about a job posting. “Michael Gainer, George Apfel here, looking to get back to Buffalo, a long time dream of mine.”

Well, he did come back and for several years has been a vibrant, joyful spirit who crafted and shaped the Guild and ReUse Action store at 980 Northampton Street. His ability to figure out the inner workings of a century old building and his brilliant sense of humor, kindness, and loyalty combined to convey a confidence that there was almost nothing George could not do.

I struggle to characterize the role he played in our lives, because he was so much more than an employee and co-worker, he was a mentor, master technician, historian, preservationist, teacher, author, humorist, and friend and a core member of the ReUse Action family.

A few weeks back, George’s health stumbled, he was hospitalized in Rochester briefly, and only just recently returned to Buffalo.
Unfortunately, his condition deteriorated, and he was unable to return to the George we all know, a being and energy overflowing with exuberance and vitality.

Today, we honor and celebrate his life and everything he contributed to our efforts here in Buffalo to promote ReUse and Recycling, to support community regeneration and preservation, and to improve the world merely by the positivity and love that you share each day!

George Thomas Apfel, you will be cherished and missed.

We’re an actively anti-racist organization. We support peace and non-violence. We’re confident we can move forward as a community to make real changes to the current systems of inequality, lack of community safety and lack of accountability. We’re ready to serve as needed, seeking guidance from those directly harmed by racism.

Our community has rallied to support the survivors. This expresses the very best Buffalo has to offer the world. In the wake of tragedy the only path towards healing is through the direct confrontation of hate and evil acts, proactive organizing and policy to eliminate the forces dividing us, and a total rethinking of our culture and community.

The ReUse Action community stands allied with our East Side neighbors and the rest of Buffalo to be bold in our advocacy and courageous in our actions.

. . . then ReUse Action is the place! The big monster door in the picture (approx 8×8 . . . feet that is) is so heavy that our 6 ft 7 in field chief couldn’t lift it.

We’ve got many others in various states of style, condition and weight. Several (4 ft wide 84 in tall) ones we have in the store also have the cast iron frames (also super heavy). Those were cast just down the road at Lackawana Steel. What they all have is local authenticity.

Come see them . . . and knock on them . . . or any of the other doors we have in stock Tues or Sat 9-4.
