Suh leaves Detroit, Now what?

Ndamukong Suh is set to sign a record-breaking contract with the Miami Dolphins. Signing the $114 Million deal would mean the end of his days in Detroit. What can I team do when your best player moves?

It is sad but the Detroit Lions have to move on. The salary cap issue was the main culprit for Detroit. They were tied down with the old rookie CBA and years of being at the bottom of the standings cost them to overpay their rookies. The multiple restructuring in the past years made it impossible to franchise Suh. Letting go of Suh will actually give the Detroit Lions some financial flexibilty. Here are the people who are going to be in the "hot seat" for the Detroit Lions:

1. Martin Mayhew and the management - The loss of Suh will give them a fair amount of salary to give out to possible replacements and fill other holes of the team. If Suh signed with the Lions, it would have been way more challenging for the management to improve last year's team. There are obvious holes with the Lions and none too obvious with the DT situation. Most likely, the team will parade a totally new DT combination on opening day. They lost Suh and most likely their 2011 top pick Nick Fairley as well. It is critical that Mayhew can use the available money to find someone decent enough to fill the gap. The team have needs in secondary, offensive line, and RB. The first 3 rounds of this draft will be critical as they have to draft for need and not the usual BPA strategy that they employed in the previous years. Heads will roll will if the Lions will be in another losing season.

2. Teryl Austin - If Austin can retain a Top 5 defense despite the loss of Suh, then most likely the guy will become an HC next year. Was Austin just blessed with a talented bunch led by Suh or was it his schemes and abilities that propelled the Lions into becoming the No.2 defense in the NFL? We will find out next season. It will be more challenging but if Austin will show that he is indeed a genius then this guy will probably on his way to a new and exciting gig as a head coach. Losing Suh is actually a big opportunity for him to show future employers that he is indeed ready for greater challenges.

3. Joe Lombardi - Salary-wise, the Lions are now heavily invested in the offense. If they cannot crack the Top 10 next season then Joe should go. He already has a strong-armed former top pick QB, the best WR-duo, a host of TEs, and even probably a retooled RB and OL this year. Last year, the playoff push was because of Suh and the defense. It is time for the offense to step up. The only way for the Lions to become a playoff contender this season is to have an offense than can really score at least 4 TDs a game and have a defense that can minimize scoring opportunities by limiting opponent TDs. Joe must summon his inner-Vince Lombardi.

If the Lions can be in the playoffs in the coming season then it will be a big victory for the management. It will be very hard though but if they can pull it off then the long suffering Lions fans could probably hope again that they see the Lions win the Superbowl in their lifetime.

Who wins in the trade?

1. Minnesota - They got back the former fave of the franchise to team up with Andrew Wiggins who is potentially the new face of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Garnett is old but going back to Minnesota will give some sort of perfect ending of his stellar 20 year career in the NBA. Garnett was drafted by Minnesota out of high school. Fans will definitely love this move. It is a nostalgic move that will not help them this season but Minnesota was never the same after Garnett left. The man who made the Wolves consistent playoff contenders is back. Not as a saviour but more of a mentor to the next generation of Timberwolves and probably a potential assistant coach or team executive of the organization. Garnett could even play one more season as his farewell tour.

2. Brooklyn Nets - The Nets get a young and dynamic SF that could help them make that playoff push in the final 2 months of the season. Thaddeus is definitely a better player than the aging Garnett at this point in time. Brooklyn will try their best to improve of their draft statuses because they cannot expect a good pick next year in the draft because Atlanta, the NBA's best team has an option to switch draft positions. Brooklyn is in the win now mode and Thaddeus Young will be a vital piece for their chase of a playoff spot in the weak Eastern division.

Verdict: If we just focus on stats, the clear winner is Brooklyn Nets although, Minnesota has a consolation in getting someone who has been instrumental to the franchise in the past.

San Miguel Beer grabs another PBA Title after long wait!

It has been a long wait for the San Miguel Beer franchise. Despite fielding year in and year out one of the strongest line-ups in the PBA, the Beermen has not won a championship since the 2010-11 Governor's Cup while still known as the Petron Blzaze boosters. The last time that a team named San Miguel Beer won was the 2008-2009 Fiesta Conference and the last time this storied franchise won an All-Filipino plum was way back in 2001. San Miguel now has 20 PBA titles all in all.

I am really happy for them but I am happier for the PBA fans. The fans were treated with an amazing series. It could not have a better unless of course, we wanted Jvee Casio to make a miracle 3-point shot to propel Alaska to an improbable title. Alaska has shown a tenacity that was never seen in an Alaska team. Calvin Abueva emerged as the face of the new Alaska identity. Pesky, brash, kakainis, but so good that if only he were 6-6 his talent could have landed him a spot in the NBA. Alex Compton actually outcoached Leo Austria. Compton properly managed the playing time of his players while Austria gave heavy minutes to his superstars who almost got victimised by the fresher legs of the Aces. Talent luckily, prevailed over teamwork last night. It was like the destiny star was shining on June Mar Fajardo who on that night finally claimed a PBA title. It was a seemingly long wait for the once in a generation big man from Pinamungahan, Cebu. Fajardo has a potential to eclipse Mon Fernandez and Alvin Patrimonio if he keeps on improving every conference. Now that he has the championship, the pressure has been lifted and the fears of him becoming PBA's Patrick Ewing is now gone.

It was a great series and I am one of the fans who would have wished that there was a Game 8, and Game 9. I am sure PBA has won more fans last night after watching a classic conclusion of a surprisingly competitive Philippine Cup Finals.

2015 PBA Philippine Cup Finals Game 4: Halftime Analysis

San Miguel Beer has once again taken a big lead. The Beermen finished the first period at 33-16 then they limited the Alaska Aces to 10 points in the second quarter. Alex Cabagnot is playing his best game of the series. The point guard combined with Junemar Fajardo in a 12-4 run to give the San Miguel a 23 point lead at the half.

So far, San Miguel has matched the defensive intensity of the Aces. The game was full of deflections and disruption of the passing lanes. There were lots of steals and counter steals. The difference between the two teams is that San Miguel's guards especially Cabagnot has started hitting at the outside. Cabagnot scored 16 points at the half.

Alaska will once again need to summon the magic that they have in Game 1 and 3. They are in a way used to this kind of deficits. They will definitely try to increase the pressure and speed up the game. San Miguel needs to hold on to this lead to be able to improve their confidence. If they rout the Aces this game, they will definitely send a message that they also want this title as bad as the Aces.

Why the Detroit Pistons can make the playoffs?

The Detroit Pistons became one of the hottest NBA teams after giving Josh Smith a Christmas gift of 27 million and release papers. Every since they played Santa, they have won 9 of their last 10 games. In a few short weeks, they turned from one of the lottery favourites (5-23) to become one of the dangerous contenders for a playoff spots (14-24) in the Eastern Conference. Their record may not show it but the league has noticed their amazing surge and even their fans are suddenly rejuvenated.

The Pistons are now humming and they are set to become a playoff team. If they succeed in punching their way to a playoff ticket then it will surely become one best comeback stories in professional sports history. Here are some good reasons why the Detroit Pistons can make it:

1. Stan Van Gundy - He is an accomplished coach and he has led teams to overachieve in the past. He never had a winning percentage less than .512 in a season. Van Gundy's career record was over .600 before he took over the Pistons and he never missed making a playoffs. He has what it takes to turn any team into a winner. With the Pistons, he has now the chance to become the "Pat Riley" of the Motown franchise.

2. Team Composition - Detroit became so successful in the past by assembling a deep line-up and not relying on 1 or 2 Superstars. Sure they have Isiah Thomas in their late 80's run but that team paled in comparison to the Lakers, Celtics, and Bulls when it comes to star power. The 2004 Champion team was built similarly. This year's team has so many weapons that it is hard to pinpoint who will explode in one night. Brandon Jennings is getting his confidence back but on some nights the main guard becomes Meeks, Augustin or KCP. They have a solid guard bunch that has a little drop-off in skills if the starters move to the bench. Van Gundy has a lot of good shooters in this team which is usually his team's trademark. Josh Smith was not accurate enough to fit the way the coach wants them play. Will this year be the comeback of Pistons Basketball? Highly Likely.

3. Big Men - The Pistons have a C-PF tandem that can compete with anybody in the league. Greg Monroe and Andre Drummond are at least in the top 12 in their respective positions. Monroe is practically in his contract year and he has been one of the most consistent players of the team. Drummond is one of the up and coming big men in the league and he is just 21 years old. The two of them are double-double machines and they both can play C and PF solidly giving Van Gundy some line up flexibility.

4. Bench - The bench has been a big revelation after being given more minutes when Josh Smith was released. Jonas Jerebko is playing one of his best seasons and he is an excellent stretch four in the Van Gundy offence. The Swede is grabbing rebounds and hitting shots from the outside which complements well with Drummond and Monroe. Meeks has been scoring so well ever since he came back and the Pistons only won 3 games while he was injured. Augustin has shown that he has the ability to run the offence while Caron Butler has a bit of revival with this team. The bench are a big reason why the team have very good second quarters and why Van Gundy can have so many dangerous endgame combinations.

5. The East - If the Pistons were playing the West, the 5-23 start could easily make teams throw a white flag even before the change in calendar year. In the East, everything is possible. The early season favourites are faltering. The best team is for sale. The current 8th seed is for sale. Lebron's Cavs are struggling. To make the playoffs, the Pistons need help from the other teams. They are just 2 games out of the 8th spot and 2.5 from the 7th spot. If the Pistons continue to play like a Top 3 team in the East until the end of the season, they could probably go as high as a 5th seed.

Making playoffs is not easy but if the Pistons manage to pull this off they will definitely be one of the teams to watch in the East. It could even spark a glorious run like what they did in the past decade.

Why Alaska will win the 2015 Philippine Cup Title?

Three games into the 2015 PBA Philippine Cup Finals, the Alaska Aces have taken a 2-1 lead over the favored San Miguel Beermen. In a way it is a big surprise as San Miguel led by MVP Junemar Fajardo and former MVP Arwind Santos have took double digit leads in all 3 games and yet they only have one victory to show.

Well, Alaska is summoning an inner-Ginebra in them. I never seen a team this resilient in the last few years of watching the PBA. Here are some factors why Alaska will win this tight series:

1. Blue Collar attitude - These Alaska Aces are not the same as the Tim Cone era Alaska. This year's team is more about intensity and not much about finesse and showtime. This kind of attitude or "angas" is best displayed in their leader, Calvin "The Beast" Abueva. His willingness to do the dirty work have infected the other Aces. Ping Exciminiano has transformed into a mini-beast. Dondon Hontiveros has never been this fiery. Good looking boys Thoss and Banchero are playing like tough men. The serious intensity of Alex Compton's boys have rattled the Beermen. They remind me of the Detroit Pistons Bad Boys that shackle Michael Jordan for a few years in the 1980's.

2. Comeback Kids - The Aces are never afraid playing from behind. They know they can rally and score in bunches. They seem to play better when they are behind. They have rallied from over 20 point deficits and they have been doing this all season long. Alaska got that mojo that can counter SMB's star power. Once Alaska gets the momentum, they are impossible to beat. They are slowly becoming the Ginebra San Miguel of this generation and no lead will be safe.

3. Speed and Pressure - The Aces have the speed to counter San Miguel's size. They have disrupted the vaunted half court offence of Leo Austria. The pressure caused so many deflections and delays to San Miguel's plays. It's so beautiful. They look like Pacquiao pressuring De la Hoya to give up.

4. Absence of Superstars - They are filled with good players but not the superstar kind. Calvin Abueva is their MVP but shooting and scoring is not really his forte. It's his defense and his ability to get into opponent's minds that makes him better this year. He is like a Dennis Rodman with better scoring. Hontiveros and Menk are past their primes. Thoss has been upstaged by younger and taller centers and he is now a bit undersized in the era of giants. They remind me a lot of the 2004 Detroit Pistons that cut down the star-studded LA Lakers.

Alaska's traits have full of victorious precedents and unless San Miguel make a radical adjustment this series will be going in favor of the underdogs. Alaska has a good chance of putting this series away by winning the pivotal Game 4.

Post-Mortem: San Miguel grabbed the title by winning Game 7 by 2 points. It was one heckuva Game 7. San Miguel at one point led 23 and the were leading by 21 at the half. That mammoth lead was practically erased in just 12 minutes. Alaska owned the second half. They are really joy to watch when the are behind. the Aces just do not know how to give up. They even had a 6 point lead with 4 minutes left in the game. San Miguel virtually took a page from Alaska by stealing the game in the final minutes. Can you imagine that these 2 teams are just separated by 2 points? I really give credit to the team's attitude and intensity. Alex Compton is a genius in adjustments and I look forward to a rivalry perhaps. ;)

This is the 2014 Girls U14 Football National Team that is making waves in the 2014 AFC U-14 Girls' Regional Championship for the ASEAN Region. The young Malditas will face the similarly undefeated Thailand side tonight for the championship trophy. While reaching finals has in a way branded this team as overachievers, the team is capable of beating a strong Thai team that has not conceded a goal in the tournament.

This Philippine football team is not your typical team that usually become jubilant reaching the semifinals in an ASEAN level tournament. The 2014 girls U-14 team dominates opponents and has only conceded one goal so far in the tournament. They destroyed Singapore 6-0. Then, they upset the dethroned defending champions and hosts Vietnam 1-0. They capped their group matches with a decisive 5-0 beating of Cambodia. In the semifinals, the team rallied to a 2-1 victory against Myanmar.

The leading goal scorers of the team are Cebu's Itsuko Bacatan with 4 followed by the 3 goals of Davao's Joyce Semacio. The team is composed of players all over the country. They have just played together for less than 2 months but they somehow buck the odds and slowly showing that the national grassroots program of the Philippine Football Federation is starting to bear fruit. Who knows in 5 years time, these girls will dominate the Southeast Asian football scene. It might be too optimistic but a victory in the U14 level will be a great shot in the arm for Philippine Women's football.

2014 NBA Finals Game 1: The "Heat" beat the Heat

The 2014 NBA Finals Game 1 will be remembered as the cramp game or the "heat" game. The game was close fought match until the Lebron James succumbed to cramps. The King's absence made turned what supposed to be a classic finals game into laugher. The San Antonio Spurs playing at their home court the AT&T Center proved to be more durable and sturdier in a game under intense heat because the air conditioning at the venue was busted. Lebron James left the game after making his final basket with 3:59 left due to cramps. The score was 94-92 in favor of the Spurs at that time. The home team finished the game with a 16-3 run.

Winners:

San Antonio Spurs - They kept their home winning streak alive and the win gives them confidence to win the championship that they could have won last year if not for some odd breaks. This year could be different. The breaks could be in their favor. The A/C or the lack of it was their sixth man in the game. They have shown that they can stand the heat.... both the team and the temperature.

Tim Duncan - The 38 year old is showing that he can play forever. The veteran score 21 points to lead his team in scoring in game 1. He made 9 out of 10 shots. He has always been a model of consistency all throughout his amazing basketball career. He is all-time great and kids should watch and learn

Losers:

The Fans - We were robbed with a classic ending. The game was so close until the Spurs broke away. Call me spoiled but that is not the kind of ending I want. The funs inside the venue were baked and toasted and they too deserved better. The ones watching at home would not want a game ending in a rout. The odds maker are probably livid as well. Hopefully, the next few games will be remembered for its buzzer beaters, controversial calls, finals moments, and not for the temperature of the venue or players unable to play.

Lebron James - Michael had a flu game. Lebron had cramps and tapped out? He better redeem himself in the next few games. He became a mere mortal once again and he needs a big bounce back game in Game 2. I am salivating with the idea of him scoring like 50 points in Game 2 and showing the world that game 1 was a fluke like Game 5 in the Indiana series. Well, well, well... let's see what happens.

Game 1 is over and I am already looking forward to Game 2. It is a seven-game series and the championship is still too close to call right now. The Spurs got the upper hand but it was somehow expected because they are playing at home. The complexion of the series will only change when a visiting team beats a home team. This will be a very enjoyable final match-up.

Pacquiao beats Bradley...now what?

A day after national sports icon Manny Pacquiao beat the formerly undefeated Timothy Bradley, I am left wondering what is next for Pacquiao??? Is he gonna ever fight the every choosy Floyd Mayweather? Is he going to retire? Is he going pay his taxes?

There are so many questions that linger and I am, just like the millions of fans, is wondering what's next. We can easily move on from yesterday because Manny won. It would've been so different if another controversy happened. I just hope that Mayweather will finally relent and sign on to fight most anticipated and severely hyped fight in history. I really hope it'll happen before Pacquiao turns 40 or become a senator of the Republic.

Winners and losers of the “Jerie Pingoy rule”

Winners:

Big UAAP programs – A lot of money is now being invested in UAAP schools even in the high school level. There are many competitions now that pit players in different age groups. Schools now hire more coaches, scouts, and other staff that can create a pipeline of basketball superstars. The new rule somehow protects the supposed “investment” of the basketball programs. The rule also prevent poaching from other schools although, nothing can stop UAAP schools from poaching these players earlier. Some schools have varsity teams that can be 4 to 5 team deep and many people put a lot of value with championships even at the lower levels.

NCAA – The absence of a similar rule will now somehow give the NCAA a new source of college stars. Before, it was typically a one-way street as countless of San Beda Cubs stars transformed into UAAP heroes after developing under the famed San Beda Juniors program. The Jerie Pingoy Rule will make some UAAP Jrs. Starters think about moving to the other Metro Manila collegiate league.

Smaller Collegiate leagues – Similar to the NCAA, other smaller leagues can now acquire the services of former UAAP high school players. They can somehow say to a potential UAAP dreamer to star for them for one year and get more seasoning before transferring again to their dream UAAP School.

Local players – The new rule also gives Filipino players more playing opportunities as the new rule could discourage some quality foreign players in playing at the UAAP. UAAP schools though could create a pipeline of foreigners who can be their import in the next campaign. It will be somehow more costly to schools in keeping these foreigners as normally they would have to shoulder some expenses for foreigners to just sit out 2 seasons and many things can happen in those 2 seasons.

Losers:

UP – The University of the Philippines does not have the financial backing to support a talent-rich basketball program. Homegrown basketball stars are quite rare of the Maroons. Normally, UP relies on external recruitment for their Senior’s program. They have gotten many players from San Beda but they also had acquired services from players of Ateneo, FEU, and NU. If the players need to sit out 2 years, UP will be somehow strained financially as they will support more varsity players but they can only start playing them after 2 years. Most likely, UP will be languishing in the UAAP standings in the next 10 years.

ADMU – The Ateneo de Manila University is also a loser as they are the country’s most popular collegiate basketball team. Many young players play hard in high school with dreams of donning the Blue Eagle jersey. Although Ateneo can always tap their best high school stars, their drive for more championships usually lead to players from other places. If you make a survey of what is the dream school of next year’s batch of high school seniors in the UAAP Jrs. Tournament, most likely most players will list Ateneo. It is a loss for Ateneo but not a big loss. They can afford players like Jerie Pingoy to sit for 2 years. They are just in a way hurting the FEU Tamaraws by getting the supposed next great FEU guard.

Parents – Parents of student athletes will now have to select the college where their children will play as early as the child hits high school. It might be too early but they early have to somehow chart the basketball futures of their children.

Underutilized high school basketball stars – Not all players are like Jerie Pingoy or Kiefer Ravena. For every star like Ravena, there will be 4 to 5 who do not get elevated to the senior’s team. Some have the patience to languish in Team B or Team C but some would rather play in a rival school and try to rub it to the faces of those who denied them a chance for collegiate stardom. It is not going to be easy anymore unless a player has the humility to play for a smaller league.

UAAP Basketball has been the glamour sport of the league and it has become a big business. Players are now viewed more as commodities and assets and probably people are putting to much weight on basketball, a sport where the Philippines cannot get a medal or even just qualify in World-level competitions. I cannot blame UAAP schools and their management though as UAAP Basketball is giving many of these schools exposure. Many high school students choose a certain school because of their cool UAAP program even if they are not athletes. The UAAP coolness factor could even be more important than to board exam history of schools for some kids. The power of traditional media and social media has made the UAAP bigger than ever. The rule has its benefits and weaknesses but eventually people will just adjust and the rule will just become the norm and people will not complain about it anymore.

Well, it’s sad to see one of the most effective imports in the current PBA Commissioner Cup going away because he got out of control while playing the game that he loved. It might be called intensity but in the age of Youtube and Twitter, his actions were indefensible. We have seen players brawling with opponent or even opposing fans but choking a teammate crosses the line and it made PBA watching borderline rated R. R for Renaldo Balkman.

I had high hopes for Petron and Balkman in this conference. Petron somehow dominated the pre-season and they have one of their best starts in years. Before the "historic" match, Petron was tied for first with their opponents the Alaska Aces. After the "crazy" incident, PBA Commissioner Chito Salud fined Balkman 250,000 pesos and he will never be allowed to play Asia's oldest professional basketball league.

The penalty was quiet harsh but I felt that somehow it was justified as PBA is one of the country's top entertainment shows. A lot of youngsters watch the games and seeing a big guy choke a teammate is not suitable for young ages. If the commissioner let it go, it might send a wrong message of tolerating violence inside the court. There are are lines that we should not cross. We cannot choke anyone in national TV unless we are talking about "professional" wrestling.

The Petron team is willing to give him another chance. I know how they feel as well. They just found a "perfect" import for them and now they have to look for a replacement. I do not know if they will make an appeal on behalf of the player but in a way, the team was penalized for not being able to contain their highly competitive import. Petron can move on and try to use the situation to galvanize the team but it could also break their momentum and once again lead them to underachieve. I am somehow rooting for them to bounce back but they need to find an identity that will define the team. Are they just going to be a bunch of underachievers or will they finally live up to their fan's expectations.

2012 PBA Governor's Cup Final Game 1: Poise

Poise. If you ask an avid Philippine basketball fan who is more poised between the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters and B-Meg Llamados, most likely you will hear that the latter is more poised than the two. In Game 1 of the 2012 PBA Governor's Cup Final, it was a different story. Rain or Shine played like a veteran team while 2012 PBA Commissioner's Cup champs B-Meg Llamados got carried away by the moment. The boys of Yeng Guiao were able to set a very physical tone early and eventually it got to the heads of the B-Meg camp including their coach.

It was the first time for Rain or Shine to play in the finals but it did not show as players like Paul Lee, Gabe Norwood, Jireh Ibanes, Ronjay Buenafe, JR Quinahan, and Beau Belga took turns in helping import Jamelle Cornley overcome the much more experienced B-Meg team. RoS took control of the second half after a bruising first half to win 91-80 en route to 1-0 lead in their best of 7 finals series.

It might just be one game but for sure, poise will be a factor in this series. So far, 4 technical fouls have been called including one that led to the ejection of Coach Tim Cone for doing a Bobby Knightesque act. Fans can expect to see more "mind-game" moves in both camps in the coming games. In the end, the champion will be the more poised team in the series. Who is your bet?

Some call it a joke, a robbery, shocker, fixed, rigged, etc. It could be all of the above but what else is new? Boxing has been like that. It is slowly evolving into a new version of professional wrestling. What's next? Costumes? Chairs? Tag-team? By the rate this is going, we might just make mixed martial arts an olympic sport.

The fans and the writers are all unanimous in saying that Pacquiao won the fight. Not just won, but dominated. Well, unfortunately, they weren't the judges of the fight. CJ Ross and Duane Ford saw it for Bradley at 115-113. While a 3rd judge (Jerry Roth) saw it for Pacquiao. How can that be? The fans at MGM can't believe it. The one watching TV are shocked. It is an outrage and maybe, it will be the start of change.

Change. It could be for good or for bad but it is definitely bound to happen. Many Pacquiao should decide on a new direction to take. There is so many alphabet belts already and I think Manny Pacquiao can do away with WBO. Bradley can have the belt and keep it. It was a farce anyway. Why should he go for a rematch. What for? If he goes for it, he is like validating cheats and he is a major player in the "script".

Second, promotions. Bob Arum says he will make tons of money in the rematch lol. So it was like what he was craving all along. It is a planned trilogy because if Manny won, there is no fight left except the one with Mayweather who likewise is stalling. Manny Pacquiao can do away with this non-sense. He can tell his promoter he will fight in Manila and save his best years to his kababayans. He can even walk away now and enjoy a new life preaching the right way to live and serving his constituents.

It is a time for change and Manny can have a big impact on boxing as a whole. If he leaves then probably boxing will try to fix what went wrong. He can be boxing's savior or he will be the last straw that made professional boxing extinct. Manny, it is up to you.

The Ronda Pilipinas 2012 is in its finals stages and every major prize is still up for grabs. Here are the match-ups to watch as the Ronda draws to a close.

Battle for Red Jersey and White Jersey: Mark Galedo vs. Iris Valenzuela

The Red jersey is for the overall classification while White jersey is for the King of the Mountain (KOM) title. After the crucial trek to Baguio in Stage 12, Galedo leads Valenzuela by a mere 51 seconds. Valenzuela meanwhile leads the KOM race by over 20 points after getting top points in the Hors Category climb in Stage 12. The battle for supremacy between the top two will be highlighted in Stage 13's Individual time trial. If Galedo can catch up and gain against Valenzuela, then he could be this year's Ronda champion. Valenzuela will be cycling 1 minute ahead of the leading Galedo in the ITT. Galedo captured the bronze medal in the 50km ITT in the 26th SouthEast Asian Games. He definitely holds the advantage in the upcoming stage.
The ITT was won by Valenzuela but Galedo was just a few seconds behind. The gap now between the Top 2 riders is juts 33 seconds. Barring any accidents or any unfortunate event, it looks like Galedo is set to win this year's Ronda. Tomorrow's penultimate lap is a flat stage and Roadbike Philippines will utilize some strategies to keep Valenzuela from pulling away from Galedo.

Battle for Team Classification

The team race in this year's Ronda has been full of lead changes. The top 5 teams are currently within 12 minutes from each other. V-Mobile is currently leading buoyed by its performance in Stage 12. Stage 12 team classification winner American Vinyl/LPGMA is currently second followed by Philippine Navy, Metro Manila, and One Tarlac. The team title is still too close to call and many Filipino cycling teams now are experienced in making successful race strategies so it would be harder to predict. Teams like Roadbike Philippines will just probably be using most of its team resources to support Mark Galedo but many cyclists from the Top 5 teams have also individual aspirations so let's see happens.
American Vinyl/LPGMA is just 2:52 behind V-Mobile. There is a still a chance for the second running team to overtake the leaders with 2 laps remaining.

Battle for Yellow/Gold Jersey

The Yellow/Gold jersey rankings or young rider classification was ruled by RP Team member George Oconer in the first 10 stages. A mishap in the 11th stage gave the coveted jersey to Ronald Oranza but his rule only lasted one stage as he lagged behind in the climb to Baguio. The new holder is Philippine Army/RC Cola's John Mier who finished 4th in Stage 12. Mier now leads Oconer by over 5 minutes. Mier has won bronze medals in pursuit events in SEA games, while Oconer was last year's sprint king and best young rider in the Ronda. It will be exciting to see which among these young national team members gets the title this year. The crucial ITT will definitely play a big part on their respective campaigns.
John Mier topped the young rider classification in the ITT thus increasing his lead against Oconer. It now stands at 5:29. It will take a miracle for the other riders to snatch the prestigious yellow/gold jersey from the Philippine Army/RC Cola cyclist.

In a perfect world, a Clippers vs. Lakers conference finals series would have been a first. Two teams with the same home court battling in a seven game series. Staples Center would become the center of the basketball world in May. The dream match-up however, did not materialize this year. As both teams were shown the exit by two of the hottest teams in the NBA right now.

The San Antonio Spurs brought the broom to LA and swept the Chris Paul-led Clippers. The Oklahoma City Thunder disposed the aging Lakers in 5 games. For LA fans, too bad but at least they have a good consolation with the overachieving LA Kings in the NHL.

The offseason will be very interesting for both squads. Many expect that the Lakers will be dismantled piece by piece but who knows, Dwight howard might end up in purple and gold. Who will remain? Will Pau still be there? Bynum? the rugged Meta World Peace? Who will be LA Lakers' guards? I am sure that many free agents salivate on the prospects of playing in the bright lights of Hollywood. LA will definitely contend next year but can they contain the emergence of OKC? They are in for tough rebuilding.

For the Clippers, they have a good core. Will Chris Paul sign a long term deal? It would be sad if he will go after one of the most successful Clipper seasons of all-time. They could probably make the next Stockton to Malone combo but hoping to win at least one title before retiring. The clippers are on the rise but they have a history of being so inconsistent.

Next year, there is a good chance that a Staples series will happen. Unlike baseball's subway series, a Lakers-Clippers series will be played in just one venue. It will definitely be "sui generis". I guess, I still have the impeachment bug. :)

2012 PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals: Game 7 beckons!

The current PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals that pits the Talk 'N text Tropang Texters and the B-Meg Llamados have indeed revitalized the Philippine Basketball Association. The finals series is rating well and fans of both squads are flocking to game venues to give it a very festive feel. I am so happy that the PBA is becoming the center of talk and attention of Pinoy sports fans once again.

With no Azkals match and Manny Pacquiao fight on the schedule, the PBA Commissioner's Cup final is a sure blockbuster, indeed. So what is so special with this series?

1. Coaching - Tim Cone is in the finals for the first time after leaving his longtime post in Alaska Aces. He faces friend and rival Chot Reyes in an epic match-up of arguably the best PBA coaches in the last 20 years.

2. Rivalry storylines - It's San Miguel group vs. MVP, Cone vs. Reyes, Yap vs. Castro, Yancy vs. Ranidel

3. Alternating victories - No team has won 2 straight games so far in this series. Will it be different in Game 7???

4. Yap revival - James Yap has gotten back his high-scoring self in this series.

5. Castro emergence - Jason Castro is showing that he is a future MVP of this league.

6. Soaring ratings and crowd - Game 6 was watched by over 20,000 people.

The Commissioner's office cannot wish for a better ending i guess unless this series will be down to the last shot (which could happen). I am sure many players would wish that they would be playing in one of the most anticipated PBA games in years. Many people will surely bet tens, hundreds, and probably millions of pesos for game 7.

Who would win? It is too close to call for me. One thing's sure though, I will be glued to my TV set come Sunday. How about you, what do you think?

Boston is humming lead by the amazing Rajon Rondo

Isn’t it amazing to see a guy get double figure assists in 20 straight games. In the NBA, only 3 people have done it. John Stockton in his heyday had 29 straight games of amassing more than 10 assists. Magic Johnson had 20. Now, Rondo’s streak still alive.

Since Boston is fighting for home court advantage for the first round. I am sure that Doc Rivers will keep him on the floor. Most likely the streak will extend to the playoffs. The Celtics are also similarly streaking and I think many teams will avoid a first round match-up against the red hot Boston team.

In the last 5 games, Boston went 4-1 with victories over potential playoff opponents Atlanta, Miami, Philadelphia, and Indiana. The lone loss was against the out of contention Raptors. In those 5 games, Rondo averaged 14.8 assists and he even had a triple double against Atlanta Hawks. It was his 6^th triple double in the season.

The Celtics will be facing the Nets and Bobcats in the next two games and they will be finishing the season battling 5 other teams who are fighting for playoff spots. If Boston remains hot, then I expect to see a salivating Boston-Chicago match-up in the 2^ndround of the playoffs. J

Pennisi makes it to Sportscenter

6'9" Mick Pennisi's famous flop became viral that even the guys of ESPN have given him a few seconds of fame by including his act in the top ten plays of the day. Pennisi has that reputation of being an enforcer in any team that he plays. He is sort of like the Dennis Rodman of the PBA. He does not cross dress but he knows a million ways of getting under the skin of opposing players. Well, Will McDonald now knows that someone in the PBA will not back down no matter how big or tough his opponent is. McDonald learned the hard way and Petron is sent reeling towards the bottom of the standings.

The reaction was a bit delayed and it would not have mattered since players will surely get penalized when they throw the ball and hit someone. Many really find it funny but Petron and Will McDonald is definitely not amused. This blog would really like to congratulate Pennisi for landing in the No.2 top play of the day. It is my first time to see a PBA player in Sportscenter's top plays. WTG MICK!!!!

Tale of 3 Fil-Ams in the 2012 NCAA Basketball Tournament

The March Madness has started but it ended so soon for a trio of sophomore guards who have Filipino roots. 5-10 Jason Brickman plays for Long Island University Brooklyn Blackbirds. 6-4 Fil-American Stephen Holt dons the St. Mary's Gael's jersey. Former RP U-18 reinforcement 6-4 Matthew Wright is a varsity player of the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. St. Bonaventure, St. Mary's and LIU all lost their round of 64 matches to be eliminated from the big dance.

It is sad to know that their teams lost immediately but as a consolation, I realized that we have 3 up and coming players from very good NCAA programs. All their teams won at least 20 games this season. Brickman is even No.5 in assists per game (7.3) in the NCAA. These players could be tapped by the SBP to play for the Smart Gilas in the future. All 3 are still sophomores and could still improve their games. Who knows? One of this 3 could be make it to the NBA. I will definitely be keeping my eye on them for the next couple of years.

Angel Guirado stars in the Azkal's conquest of Tajikistan

Days after being involved in a controversy, Angel Guirado gave the performance of his life to lead the Philippine Men's Football team to a victory over Tajikistan in their AFC Challenge Cup group match. The 2-1 win catapulted the Philippines to football heights that has never been reached before by its national teams of the past.

The Azkals fell behind at stoppage time in the first half via a controversial goal. Down 1-0, Angel Guirado got aggressive on the 54th minute and stole the ball from Davronjon Ergashev at the left flank. He then made an amazing cross to Phil Younghusband who kicked the ball to the back of the net and tie the match. On the 79th minute, Guirado headed home the game winner. With the win, the Philippines has a chance to be the first Southeast Asian team to win the Challenge Cup.

Angel Guirado is in the center of attention again and this time, it is for good reason. Hopefully, the Azkals will respond to the challenge in the next match as they will play without him. He got his 2nd yellow card of the tournament and he will sit out against Turkmenistan. His presence will definitely be missed.

I am sure though that his performance will be a canon-fodder for some supporters who did not like the accusation being hurled by Cristy Ramos againt Guirado and Lexton Moy. After the tournament, the 2 players will be at the mercy of the AFC disciplanary committee after being accused of sexual harassment. If he ever get some ban, I am sure that a lot of people will say that Ramos is sabotaging the Azkals ascent. It is quite hard to speculate what will happen in the coming weeks but for today, Angel Guirado is the Filipino Man of the Hour. :)

The day Pagunsan was better than Woods

I was pleasantly surprised to know that Filipino golfer Juvic Pagunsan is currently tied at 5th after the first round of the prestigious World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship. The event is held in Florida and its the first time in recent years that a Filipino is doing well against golf's best. Well, our jungolfers had their share of exploits while Dorothy Delasin and Jennifer Rosales had won LPGA events but our men cannot seem to find the grove in the Western hemisphere.

Here comes Juvic Pagunsan. He became the first Filipino winner of the Asian Tour Order of Merit last year. With the win, he was invited to the WGC event at Doral. So far, he is representing the Philippines and Asia well. He finished 3 under par in the opening round just 3 shots behind Jason Dufner and Adam Scott. He is 3 shots ahead of Tiger Woods and 4 shots ahead of World No.1 Rory McIlroy. I am sure he is happy with his performance.

If Pagunsan continue to perform well, he is in for a big windfall for this is an $8.5M event. He could also get a ton of ranking points as a WGC event only ranks behind Majors when it comes to awarding points. A win or even just a Top 10 finish here would surely put our country in the Golf World Map. Pagunsan is the Filipino golfer right now but he has the potential to be the all-time great if he continue to improve his game and avoid controversies that has hounded him in the past.

Sonny Boy Jaro upsets Pongsaklek Wonjongkam

What an amazing feat! Jaro's victory reminded me of Pacquiao's first world title in the 112 lb. class. Unlike the young Pacquiao, Sonny Boy is a veteran. At 29, some could consider that he is past his prime especially if you look at his record. His last loss was about a year ago against Hirofumi Mukai who was just on his 4th professional bout.

After the loss though, he somehow found his second win as he won 4 straight before his championship bout in Chonburi, Thailand. Nobody in the right mind would have bet for him against the legendary Thai fighter who was 83 wins in his career. Add to the fact that the match is held in Thailand. Even Alfie Jaro, Jaro's manager believed that the only to win is by knockout. And that was just what he did.

Sonny Boy gave it his all. He has lost in Mexico, Japan, Thailand, and Indonesia. Finally, the law of averages fell to his favor. Finally, he can say that he is a world champion. He won the same belt held by Manny Pacquiao, Malcolm Tunacao, Jorge Arce, and Daisuke Naito in the past. It is the belt that Pongsalek won and defended countless of times.

The victory of Sonny Boy Jaro capped the week when a 64 year old man became a bar top notcher. Their victories and vindications epitomizes the sayings that Age does not matter and it is never too late to pursue your dreams. Well done, Sonny Boy!

The Philippine Sportswriters Association feted the best in Philippines sports in its Annual Awards night. Here are the awardees for 2011:

Athletes of the Year: Dennis Orcollo, Nonito Donaire Jr.

My Reactions: Dennis Orcollo and Nonito Donaire really deserve the awards that they received. Orcollo has emerged as the best Filipino billiard player in the new decade. He has been consistent all throughout the year and he even ranked No.1 in the world rankings.

Donaire has also emerged from the shadows of Cong. Manny Pacquiao. He is slowly showing the world that he has what it takes to become a pound for pound star. This award might be one of the many he will get in the course of his career. Donaire is set to become the best boxer under 130 lb.

Another athlete who had an astounding 2011 was golfer Juvic Pagunsan. He became the first Filipino to top the Asian Tour Order of Merit. Although he became somewhat controversial in the local scene, his exploits in the Asian Tour has once again shown that the he is the best Filipino golfer right now.

Just like OFWs, these athletes are bringing in dollars to our country and I hope that our leaders will continue support them and give them venues to improve in their chosen sport. In the end, a country's sports heroes are comparable to crown jewels. Congratulations to all the winners of the 2011 PSA Awards!
