Da Big Dakka is not a self-help book. But it's fucking hilarious because ORKS!

We rarely see orks tangle with the elements such as the aldari/drukhari in the warhammer universe and this book is all about that entanglement and hilarity and violence ensues. Our boy Ufthak Blackhawk, big boss of Da Tekwaaagh finds himself in the Drukhari city of Commorragh and he just can't catch a break there. From not being able to find his way around to smashing everything in his path, there is no stopping Ufthak and the way Brooks turns the failures into victories is something really fun to watch.

The thing which sets the orks apart from any other faction in Warhammer 40,000 universe, is the power of belief that the orks possess. If it's red, it goes faster. The bigger you are, the smarter you get. Faster is better. It is way too much fun to read about the antics of the orks and their little messed up warband.

The book is full of shenanigans and even if you have not read much Warhammer, you can easily read this one as a standalone book.

The book has a solid rhythm and it makes for an entertaining read. Give this one a shot!

How To Read More Books, Faster - 5 Tips (For Now)

I do not know a faster reader than my friend Vivek who goes through books like a hot knife goes through a block of butter. These days this guy reads at least a book a day and one of the first interactions I had with him was an online argument over how many books he read in one year.

He said a big number and it ticked me in the wrong way because at that time, I was reading a lot of books too and I was nowhere near that number. But, as I found out to my dismay, Vivek was right. He did read all those books and the guy is legit a fast reader. I was wrong and he was right. And there is no shame in admitting you are wrong sometimes. So how did he do it? How did he read almost a book every 2-3 days for a year?

I do not know the answer. Vivek is just exceptional, but while mere mortals like you and I can't read so many books, we can still improve our reading and retention speeds. How to do it? Let's take a look at some of the tricks and tips for reading faster and reading more.

1. Choose Interesting Books - If there is one truth that I know, it's that you can never read them all. Writers are pushing more books than ever in the history of humanity and if you want to read it all, you will need more than one lifetime.

So, choose the right books to read. Books that are in your reading ability, in your comprehension ballpark, and still push you just a little more to explore and understand. If you are into reading fiction, maybe pick up a travel book, or maybe something that covers a different topic with a dash of fiction.

2. Set Aside Time for Reading - You need to carve some time out of your schedule to read. Simple as that. It can be an hour in the morning or an hour before bedtime.

Or set up pages to read. Tell yourself that you are going to read a certain number of pages every day. It can be any book. But be religious about it.

3. Keep Track - Goodreads is a good way to keep track of your reading. Update it when you read a book some way through and it will keep you on track to read the book properly. Hell, keep a book journal to jot down interesting words or phrases from the books you are reading.

4. Limit Your Books - This is a mistake that many of us make when we take on more than we can chew and then we can't eat at all. If you have too many books on your Now Reading pile, work to whittle them to a manageable size.

It can be tempting to read many books at the same time because you can switch from one to another when you lose a little bit of interest in one book, but it works against you. You don't finish any book at all and you can't fully immerse yourself in one book. Single task your reading.

5. Don't Speed Read - What? you say, NOT to speed read? Yup, that's what I'd recommend. If you can speed read, more power to you. But you are not running a race to read more books, there is no medal at the end of reading 100-200-300 books in a year.

Enjoy your books.

Read the beautiful lines again.

Find out interesting words and speak them to hear how they sound in your mouth. Relax and immerse yourself into what you are reading.

So yeah, that's about it for now. Like this article? Let me know and I will write more like this one! Leave a comment if you have a tip or two for reading books faster!

I'd not pick this book up for a re-read. It was okay if you like books that are confusing and without any negative character as such, where the villain is revealed in the last two chapters, and so is the McGuffin.

Not a fun book to read, but there were some redeeming points, the staircase scene was mindblowing. The Ubik introductions at beginning of every chapter were good fun to read. Other than that, skip it. I didn't enjoy reading this.
This one is going into awesome book shelf. Why? because I went into reading this book without any expectations. But the murder happens in the first two chapters! We know who the murderer is and the rest of novel is a tug of war between two brilliant minds, and the only difference between the two is that one of them is a stone cold motherfucker.

I, for one, did not the see the twist coming. It was brilliant, it was so out of the blue, it left me with my jaw on the floor. That motherfucker!

How good was this book? I read the ebook and ordered the paper version because the book blew my mind. So, yeah, those 5 stars are pretty well earned.

if murder mysteries are your game, give this one a read. You'll love it.

What a ride.

Wow.

I don't think anything I will ever read will come close to the magnificence and scope of Malazan books. These books not only tax your brain and your ability to understand, but also strain your brain when it comes to remembering all the plotlines that weave through the narrative like a complex web built by spiders that are high on fucked up drugs.

You can read one Malazan book every year and you won't need to read anything else. I am so happy after reading this book. The action sequences were way beyond anything I've read. The poetry of the words was exhilarating, the history of the Malazan world, the characters, the cities, the cultures, the friendships, the humor (oh the funny bits), the heartbreaks, the badassness of characters like Karsa fucking Orlong and Kamal Mekhar, it all creates such a heady mixture of literary accomplishment and storytelling excellence that nothing can come close.

George RR Martin, sit the fuck down and just give up. Your ASOIAF is nothing compared to even one book of Malazan.

James Altucher is a strange cookie. One part motivational guy, one part goofball, one part geek and one part something more sinister. That said, Choose Yourself is a decent read. I don't read too many non-fiction books, but Choose Yourself doesn't lag in any part.

And one can really benefit from re-reading this book to take in all the tips and ideas that he offers in the book. Sure, no book is a key to making millions or living your dream. (What if your dream is you standing naked in an exam hall?), you have to understand it in your own way.

I read this book quite some time back and I am writing a review now. I think I will read it again. Just because.

So, yes. The book makes you feel good, gives you some inspirational stories and points you in the direction that might take you towards your dreams. But it's you who has to do the walking.

Murder mystery with a disturbing conclusion. The book goes along at its own pace without bothering to take the reader along, no rush. Just a calm walk. Nowhere in the book did I feel concerned for any of the characters. The intro chapters were good, but after the murder, it's all cool and calm and unbothered pace of finding the killer.

Needless to say, i am not that big a fan of murder mysteries, more like a fan of murder stories, where the murders keep happening. Give me any of that any day. April 28th and this is the first book I've finished this year!

Back to Malazan then!
Slightly less entertaining than the second book in the series, half a world, which, I think, is the most entertaining book of the trilogy.

What I liked about this trilogy was that it looked into a new direction with YA fiction, and what I didn't like was that an author like Joe Abercrombie had to hold back his hand in terms of sex, violence, and general fuckery that is a part of his books. I guess the man needed a change of pace so that whatever is coming from him next is amped to 11.

All said and done, one of the tropes in this book was better done by mark lawrence in his broken empire trilogy. I mean, come the fuck on :D, you'll know it when you read it. Perhaps it has to do something with the fact that lawrence is more of a science guy in real life, so he is better able to describe those things.

I'd really like to see an author death match between joe's characters and some of lawrence's. Because Jorg is one evil motherfucker and only Glokta can reach that kind of evil fuckedupness from abercrombie's work. But this review isn't about Broken Empire, it's about Shattered Sea books.

Yeah, you can give these a shot if you're looking for filler reading material between something like, say, Malazan series. Cuz, fuck, damn, Malazan is a heavyweight, and that would be a sheer understatement.

I don't know what I want to read next. Suggestions welcome.
Oh god, i am still 5% to go in this book, but I'll read it when I pick up my tablet in next few hours.

Other than Tehol and Bugg, this book was a drag. But even through the drag, there were parts that were good, I liked the gold coin studded emperor and his visits to the crippled god's island. There was no Karsa in this, that made me sad. I have a legit hard-on for Karsa's antics. Guy is my spirit animal.

Also, I liked Iron Bars, the guy is a badass in his own way. There was some mention of the Crimson Guard in Gardens of the Moon, I think. One of these guys saved the thief from getting killed by a tiste andii. God, that was so long ago. I am half forgetting what happened in that book. This book was a ride in a way, even though it had slow parts. I fucking hated Udinaas. What the fuck is up with that guy? I have no idea. I couldn't give two shits about the feather witch or any of the secondary Edur characters. Fillers, all of them.

I could not make myself care about the other storylines, but the banter between T & B was amazing. That made the book worth reading for me. The jokes were funny, I can't remember how to write most of the names and right now I am too lazy to look em up. But yeah, it's an important book in the series.

Right now, I am just left with a sense of unease after reading this, but maybe that has to do with something else, something personal. But fuck that. I am not sure if I want to dive into the next book right after this one. Maybe I'll read something else to lighten the mood. This was almost 950 pages. More like 2-3 books. Phew. The new jack reacher book was out some time back, I got that, maybe I'll dig into that.

Bottom line, read this for Tehol and Bugg.
This book is a good read even if you've not read the first book. Some old characters are there, lot of new characters are there, the battles are there, the fast talking, sharp-tongued father yarvi is there, but what's really missing is the world-weary point of view of Abercrombie that's all over in everything else he writes.

Yes, this YA, it can't have all the glorious sex and violence but this is also Joe holding back all the good stuff that makes his books the gut-punches that they are. Despite that, the undercurrents of classic Abercrombie are there. The pitched battles, the violence (albeit held back), the word wrangling, the situations, the accidents, the moments when you go fuck yeah!, this book is quite a ride.

What else, really looking forward to Half A War now just so Joe can get back to writing about the first law world.

What I'd find really interesting if Abercrombie did a Richard K. Morgan and wrote some balls out cyberpunk Sci-Fi.

Now THAT'S something I'd put my money on.
Anything less than five stars for a book with such immense scope would be a travesty.

That said, it's not a book for everyone. It's a difficult book to read, and even more difficult to understand in the greater scheme of things. And anyway, the first three books in this particular series are not as well written as the seven others. I have one more so-so book to go through.

Maybe it will get better after that. I hope so.

Reading such a book is a tiring experience. Your brain gets so tired that you're unable to think anything else. When you think about the events in the book and their timelines, your whole sense of time gets warped, and even if it's fiction, you can't help but think in those massive timeframes.

It can get painful. There is absolutely zero hand-holding in Malazan books and you're mostly thrown in the middle of things to figure them out on your own.

So, if you like your fiction easy, pain-free, and light, give Malazan a skip, but if you like to torture yourself a bit, dig in.
Holden and gang are amazing as always, and personally, i feel this is the strongest Expanse series book so far. The last one was okay, readable, but this one opens up a lot of further avenues for storytelling and awesomness in the Expanse universe. I really loved that we got to see the viewpoint chapters of the whole team and for that alone it was a much tighter book than Cibola Burn.

When you read a book like this, you can't help falling a little bit in love with the characters, who are not perfect, they all have their flaws and they're all very very HUMAN. This is what sets this book series apart from a wide range of space opera, the human element is strong here, it makes the books fun, it makes the characters super-relatable and it sparks hope in your heart that no matter how bad things get, you can always count on friends and family, and it'll all work out when we work together.

Right now, really looking forward to the next book and I hope they explore the threads they've unwounded in this book. Specially, a view point of Filip, because there is much more to that character than the book explored.

Over all, five star book. If you've read the previous Expanse series books, don't miss this one.
I've not read the hunger games or any of its sequels or any of the derivative works that have spun from the concept of the everyman taking on the high and mighty. The books got better somewhere in the middle, but on the whole it was the same tired concept of fighting the powers that be by becoming one of them.

I hated that the author was holding back on the violence and there was so much telling in the book. "X stabbed Y in the stomach" why not, "the sword made a sick, squelchy sound as it entered X's stomach and the tip of the blade exited from his back like an angry demon's talon." (Yeah, now you know why I can't be a writer.)

All said and done, books like this one give me hope that I can do better.

I feel like I wasted my time in reading this book. Should have read half a war instead. Why are there so many books with teenagers fighting adults and higher powers. Why? Why can't YA be anything different? Why do oppressed teenagers have to fight everything in sight. Same ol' song and dance.

Fuck it.
Can we give six stars to a book?

Or ten?

I wish goodreads added that feature for certain books. Like, once a year, a book so amazing comes along that you want to spend your once a year ten stars on that book. We're only half way through the year, but i don't think I'll read any rollercoaster ride better than Liar's Key.

The book is long. And delicious to read. The wit, the violence, the fun, the quips, the poetry of words, the backstabbing, the bravery, the friendship, the hatred, it's all there. And then there is some more.

I won't go into the plot and story of the book, but Jalan and Snorri are out on an adventure again, looking to open gate to death's domain! And they have the key to do it! It's a ride, this book and i am definitely looking forward to the next one.

There is nothing that I didn't love about this book. Everything was in the right place, in the right amount, it was scary, it was beautiful, it was funny, and it was just perfect.

Also, quotes like this one
>>

The best time to kick a man is when he is down

-- Prince Jalan of the Red March
Now what do I say about this? It's difficult to talk about such a large piece of work when you've only peeked in through the door of what it's all about. The Malazan books of the Fallen is a ten book series with many other short stories, novels and novellas based in the same universe.

The character count goes into thousands probably and it's a completely different universe. Completely different rules, a unique magic system, characters that will haunt your dreams, politics that has more twists and turns than a hill road, it's just mind-boggling and tiring to even think of writing about the Malazan series.

Many people do not like the first book, which is this, Gardens of The Moon. They find it confusing and lengthy because of the lack of world building and hand holding, but why should there be something like that? We're all mature readers, and the Malazan books push you to stretch your imagination and figure things out.

There are no answers in this one. It's just a big awesome thing that has been put in your hands, maybe like a 2000 piece jigsaw with no image given to you and you solve it as you go.

In one word, I'd call this book beautiful. And be warned, it's not for everyone.

If you like your stories simple and easy, give this a pass, but if you like strange and wonderful and badass things, pick this one up today with the rest of the nine books and forget reading about anything else for the rest of the year.

because i am not reading anything else for sure.
There were many reasons why I liked this book. The story take some time in getting no start3d but once it does, it rolls along pretty nicely.

All in all, it's a pretty believable book because I felt it's a satire on times of today and the way we live our life, always looking at one screen or the other. Our world has become our OASIS. The dystopian tinges in the book reminded me of 1984 and even though I missed on the video game nostalgia, I still get the sense of where the author was coming from.

The points that I didn't like in the book were: the lack of an evil figure and how easy it was for the main character to go through loss and problems presented to him. He had a solution for every problem. Like, God's hand on his back.

I'm basically looking for another blade of tyshalle. Where the bad dude was super bad and the good dude was ample evil too. That book spoiled every future book for me. It set the bar too high in my head.

Anyway, if you live video games, read ready player one.
It was an entertaining book, on the whole. The whole idea of wards to keep demons (corelings in the book) out and the hints at a larger world than what was depicted in the book were all interesting in a very nice way.

The book moved at a solid pace, nice storyline, and it really sets up the stage for the further books to come.

The fight scenes were really well written, but tried as I could, i could not picture the corelings or the so called demons in my mind's eye. When it comes to imaginary monsters, Jim Butcher does a really great job, but a harry dresden book, this is not. So anyway, as with many other books, there was on directly evil monster or character in the book, just men vs an evil that had no solid origin, just a core.

Too many questions in my mind after reading this.

The things that irked me about the book were that it took too long a time to build up properly. The titular painted man doesn't even show up till half of the book. And when he does, he is the alpha male kind of dude whose personality just doesn't shine through enough in the 200 pages given to him.

BUT, even with all these tiny niggles, the book was not boring. The minor characters were amazingly developed and if this book didn't have all the demons, but it was just a book about the minor characters going about their life and dealing with daily shit, it'd still be a very readable book.

I'd definitely be reading the next book in the series, The Desert Spear.
When you read a Matthew Reilly book, it's like jumping on a moving roller-coaster while it's wheels are flying off the rails and everyone is screaming for their life.

This book is no different.

I loved this for multiple reasons. The dragons were brought into the narrative in a very believable manner, and the whole myth and science of them was explained extremely well.

The chases, the explosions, the close shaves, the booms and the bangs and did I mention explosions? It's all there and the book is jam packed with it all. After reading the disappointing dark defiles, this was a much better change of taste, refreshing and as popcorn as its meant to be.

This should totally be a movie. Reilly is sitting on a goldmine of movie material books and it would be really soon that we'd one of his books made into movies.

The great zoo of china has that potential.
I've often said that reading Jack Reacher books is like eating your favorite dish where all the ingredients have been changed just a little, but the taste of the dish has an undercurrent of everything you like and then something different.

Personal sees Reacher settling an old score because the army has called for his services as an old sniper has cropped out of the woodwork. The problem here is that it was Reacher who put him in the jail in his old life as a military policeman.

Things get interesting when the sniper takes a shot at the French president and Reacher gets involved in the mix because he knows about the way the sniper thinks.

There are lot of good thinking scenes and good fighting scenes. The last fight scene is exceptionally written and Lee Child's understanding of how fights take place and the mechanics of every street fight shine through just as they've done in the last 15 or 16 Reacher books.

In all, you get an excellent scheme unraveled by Reacher, great dialogue (I said nothing), Reacher's inventiveness and the way he shreds every problem presented to him. The hallmarks of the folding toothbrush, buying only one set of clothes, thinking things through, everything is there in the book.

If you've liked Reacher books in the past, you're going to love this one and if you've never read a Reacher book, this is the best time to start.

For ofcourse, Reacher is, Sherlock Homeless.
THIS IS THE MOST AWESOME FUCKING BOOK I HAVE READ THIS YEAR AND YES THIS IS ALL CAPS CUZ I WANT TO SHOUT AT PEOPLE AND MAKE THEM READ THIS FUCKING BOOK.

FUCK YEAH, BAXTER!

Excitement aside, i read this book last year and since then i've had some time to think about it and it's indeed a masterpiece for a strange kind of literature which doesn't hold anything back. This is a world where there is pain, there is heartbreak, this is the world of Baxter which is more real than the make believe and fantasy world of others like harry potter.

Potter doesn't hold a light to Baxter who seems more real because of his imperfections. And how real is he? He could be your friend, or mine. He could be the guy you knew in school, but never paid attention to, and maybe there was much more to the guy than what was visible.

In all, a cracker of a book, a fun read and if there is going to be a part 3, Charlie Human can take my money right fucking now.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ah, yes, the title. Apocalypse Now Now is a play on the name of the movie Apocalypse Now and in South Africa, Now Now can mean anything from in 5 minutes to never. If you say that you'll do something now now, it can mean you might do it right then, or never ever.

I really really loved this book because of the intro chapters, where the main character, Baxter is running a porn syndicate in his school and trying to prevent an all out war between the school gangs. But shit really hits the fan once his girlfriend gets kidnapped by a serial killer called the Mountain Man.

It's a wild wild ride with zombies, monsters, shape-shifters, drugs, guns, and what not.

I won't go into more details, but this is the most fun I've had in recent times while reading a book.

Special addition for blog readers: I created a new category on my goodreads shelf for this book only and titled it Awesome Books. Yes, it is that good. From the intro chapters, to the south african mythos and the middle chapters where we get introduced to the world of the Hidden who have been hiding from the human community.

It is all interesting in the way that you don't read this kind of stuff in mainstream fiction where a writer actually goes deep down into the roots of his own culture and brings it to the masses in a format that really makes the reader think, speculate, and enjoy the words on the page.

This book is amazing because the way the author has amalgamated the worlds of Cape Town and the super natural community, no one else could have done it any better. There is humor, laugh out loud moments and scenes in the book that would make you think. As a package, it couldn't have been any better.

And, at the heart of it all, is a teenager with a love story and a load of new responsibilities on his shoulders. This is the kind of books that makes a person want to pick up the pen, dive deep into his own cultural mythology and spin a yarn that will leave the reader begging for more.

Once I was done reading, I was ecstatic for the next book, Kill Baxter and I knew I'd be reading that one in record time.
Time travel is a tricky business and when you're talking about a time loop where a character is destined to repeat the same day again and again, it gets even trickier.

This was a short book and it offered all it had to offer in the span of 150 or so pages. Any more than that, and things would've started to get boring. I liked many things in this book, the science of the jackets, the explanation of how the alien Mimics attack the Earth and how the world tried to fight back. There were several touching moments in the book, the interactions between the primary characters, the beautiful chapter about coffee, the end was pretty brilliant too.

But that said, the only thing I wanted more of was the battle scenes. There are several, but they seem to get over in a flash. When you're talking about super-powered armor that can completely obliterate the enemy, there should be some explosive over-the-top action.

I keep wondering how Matthew Reilly would've tackled the same novel. There would have been explosions, close calls with death, daring escapes and the world almost ending in the aftermath.

That said, it's a good book if you wanna spend a few days with extremely believable characters.

Regular gripe: no overpowering villain in the book.
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
