Reading Angel - In most legends, vampires are more loyal to their own kind than to anything else. Is that how it is with you?

Solomon: *chuckles* If you’ve read Devotion, you know my feelings about legends. Half-truths. Sometimes less than half. In this case, nonsense. Vampires can be fiercely loyal, but not necessarily to our own race. We are dedicated to that which we can respect and admire. For me personally, that would be the Amadis and more specifically, my matriarch and mate, Katerina. I would give my existence for her safety and wellbeing. *chuckles again* I have actually tried, but she would not allow it. Even if I did not love her, I owe her my life. Does that answer your question, young one?

For now, I will let Lauren Hammond tell you a bit about Adelaide!

Adelaide, I think for me, is one of my favorites out of all the characters I’ve written. What I love most about her, is her inner strength.

In all though, she’d good-hearted, loyal, and loving.

For most of the novel, we see her weak side.

Honestly though, let’s face it, she’s had a terrible and rough childhood. Her mother abandoned her. Her father abuses her and tries to make her believe that she’s worthless even though she’s far from it. Up until Damien comes along, she’s never really felt loved. When I write a character like Adelaide, I try to imagine what it would be like to walk a mile in their shoes. With Adelaide, I asked myselfhow I’d handle living through something like her childhood. I don’t know if I, personally, would survive it.

That’s why her relationship with Damien progresses so quickly. She has so much love to give and no one to give it to. So when Damien comes along he shows her what it’s like to give your love to someone else. And for Adelaide that’s the best and most beautiful thing in the world.

For people with true inner strength, I think the journey to find it is a slow, uphill battle. It takes time. Patience.Despite everything, Adelaide’s got some fight in her. Yes, she’s in a mental hospital. And yes it takes a while for the reader to see that fight, but it is there. Somewhere.

And you’ll get to see A LOT more of it in the sequel to Insanity, White Walls.

ABOUT LAUREN:

"It all began with a dinosaur, a T-Rex to be exact. He was the main character in my very first short story. Me and T, well, we went places. He is the reason I won my first essay contest at age ten. And he is probably one of the number one reasons, I pursued a career in writing.

Throughout highschool, I was what you would call a rebel. Someone who had convinced herself that she had life figured out at age sixteen. Still, writing was my only safe-haven during that time. I wrote notebooks full of poetry, even writing fellow classmates papers for them.

Unbeknowest to me, creative writing, seemed to be my one, true calling, my passion in life.

At age twenty, I began writing my first novel. After that, everything seemed to fall into place.

I won Best Poets and Poems of 2007, and The Editor's Choice award for my poem, Summer Days.

Also, during that time I wrote or co-wrote fifteen different screenplays, some which earned me finalist spot in various screenplay competitions.

In 2010, I've come full force, with my novel Love Sucks, that was released by Punkin House Press, in August of 2010. On top of Love Sucks, I have six novels that are slated to be released through the next five years. Also, doing some various marketing work for authors and publishers.

Shoving my feet off the side of the bed, new surroundings burn my eyes. Tan plaster walls instead of thick white padded ones. One oblong barred window. Two dressers. Two closets. Two beds.

They've moved me to a different room.

A gentle squeaking noise bounces off the walls and my eyes avert to my right. Oh crap. They put me in a room with a nut job.

They say I'm a nut job.

But not like this.

Not even close.

She rocks back and forth on her cot, knees to her chest, twisting a piece of her wiry, red hair between her fingertips. Her freckled arms are trembling. She sings with vibrato.

I am slowly going crazy. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six.

Switch.

Crazy going slowly am I. One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six.

Switch.

I think about screaming again. I think about plugging my ears. Somebody turn her off.

She lifts her head slowly, a maddening look in her big, brown eyes, an eerie smile crawling across her pale, freckled lips. “Shh,” she whispers. “They're coming for us.”

“Who's they?”

She shakes her head and lets out a cackle laced with the deepest kind of crazy. I think they put her in here with me purposely. They're trying to break me. They think if they put me around truly insane people that I'll accept my place here.

Well...They are wrong."

My Thoughts:

Tempting the Best Man is the first adult novel published under Jennifer Armentrout's adult pen name. As you all know I am a HUGE fan of Jennifer's YA novels so I bought this book the second it released and immediately devoured the whole thing.

I absolutely loved Maddie and Chase! Maddie was snarky, quick-witted, and just plain awesome! Chase is completely droll worthy. He's got some emotional issues when it comes to relationships, but that made this book all the more fun! All of their interactions together had sparks flying and were so so funny. Let's just say all those little steamy moments in Jennifer's YA novels are amplified x1000 and off the charts hot!!

All of the other characters in Tempting the Best Man were also incredible. I am seriously hoping for other books that feature some of them as main characters! All of the Gamble brothers are smoking hot and very interesting. Also, Maddie's best friend was probably one of my favorite characters in the whole book!

Tempting the Best Man is an incredible contemporary romance, full of intriguingly quirky characters, hot steamy romance, and funny moments that will leave you rolling in laughter! If you like romance with steam and charm I suggest you go grab a copy now!

INTERVIEW

RA - Besides the fun sexy-times, what was the most fun difference between writing this book and your young adult books?

Jenn - "Other than being able to name body parts, there really isn’t a difference. My YA series can be a bit sexy at times, so…"

RA - Sexy indeed! Any plans to write books for the other two sexy sexy Gamble brothers (yes this question is total self-serving, but my awesome readers won't mind either, will you all?...hehe)?

Jenn - "I’ve gotten that question a lot. I have ideas for them, so maybe. "

RA - I'll take that as a yes ;) Maddie is extremely witty and I have several favorite lines from the book. Do you have a favorite and can you tell which it is if so?

Jenn - "Probably the “Earth’s my bitch” comet line or when her father kept asking what she blew."

RA - I love the "what did you blow?" part!! Flashback to when Maddie and Chase were teens, if they were to go on a dates with any characters from one of your YA books, which would it be?

Jenn - "Chase would’ve probably went out with Alex and Maddie would’ve dated Dawson."

Body and Soul Tour: Stacey Kade Interview

Today I have Stacey Kade, author of The Ghost and the Goth series here as part of her Body & Soul Tour.

Which book in this series was the easiest for you to write? Which was the hardest?

Hmm. The easiest book, I think, was the last one. I had the momentum of the two previous books behind me, and I knew Alona and Will well by that point. Plus, I’d been imagining some of those scenes for years, by that point.

The hardest was Queen of The Dead. Writing the second book is always next to impossible, or so I hear from other authors. I have no idea why, but that was definitely true for me.

If you could have dinner with any of your characters, which would it be?

I’m cheating with my answer on this—I’d love to have dinner with Alona AND Will. I can’t choose between them. :)

Skittles or M&Ms?

M&Ms

2 paths are before you, one is very steep, one is very rocky. Which do you take?

Uh, can I call for a ride? ;) Probably the steep one. I’m clumsy and all those rocks would probably just mean I’d be tripping every three feet and getting bruised and dirty.

Wait. Does this have some kind of larger meaning, in terms of my approach to life? What does it mean that I picked the steep path?

I don't know! LOL What does it say about me that I'm thinking I'd sit down with a book until someone with a ride came along...

If there's something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call?

Um, the police? Yeah, I’m a bit of a wimp when it comes to being adventurous myself. That’s why I have characters. ;)

My Thoughts:

This review may contain spoilers for book 1 in the series, Hourglass, you can read my review HERE!

The best first line of a book ever!!! Not going to tell you what it is, but once you crack the spine you will love it! Just had to start off saying that. I love love loved Hourglass, and I could not wait to dig in to Timepiece. It was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and I was not disappointed! I will say that there was very little recap of Hourglass, and since it had been so long since I had read it, my brain took a bit to remember all the little things that had happened so I felt a little lost at first. I really wish I would have re-read it first with this one.

Kaleb is one of my all time favorite book guys! I loved him the best in Hourglass, so with him as the narrator for Timepiece, let's just say that I was one happy happy girl! He is smooth, confident, and just oh-so-sexy. He's also incredibly funny, which is probably my number one quality in a guy! Lily also become a main character in Timepiece and she is a smart-mouth, confident, young woman that is not afraid to stand up for herself, her friends, or what she believes in. I love her attitude, her style, just everything about her!

If you're worried about missing Emerson and Michael, there's no need. They still play a big role. Not as big as they did in Hourglass of course, but they are still a very real part of the story and it was neat getting to see each of them through Kaleb's perspective.

Timepiece, unlike some second books in a series, was not just a place holder. It was a suspense-filled ride from beginning to end. The rips, the time changes, it's all a constant mind-bender and you never know what is going to happen to these poor characters next. This has very quickly become one of my favorite series and I can not wait to see what crazy twist Myra McEntire will throw at us next!

My Thoughts:

I started reading WAITING knowing that I was going to be a heart-broken mess by the time it was through. I had already read GLIMPSE by Carol Lynch Williams and I knew that she has a way of taking her verse novels and packing so much emotion, power, and heart-wrenching story into them that it leaves you gasping for breath through your tears.

In WAITING London is spiraling down a hole of depression. Her mother has not said a word to her since the death of her brother, her brother who was her very best friend in the world. Her father has thrown himself into his work. Her friends don't know what to say to her. She is sad, and heart-broken, and utterly alone. When she makes a friend in a new girl who doesn't know the story of her brothers death, a little life starts to spark back into her. There's also the new girl's extremely hot brother.

Let me just say that this book is not an epic romance. It's about a girl who is struggling to cope. Watching London lash out to get the attention of her mother, and just trying to feel alive, you can't help but root for the girl. Even if that does mean she strings a couple hearts along as she goes.

I know that everyone deals with grief differently, but I could not stand this mother's selfish behavior towards her daughter!! I really just wanted to reach through the pages and smack her mother to be honest with you. I was bouncing in my seat and cheering when she finally stood up to her.

Once again, Carol Lynch Williams has blown me away with another power-house verse novel of emotional depth. I plan to go find everything else she has written and read it as soon as I possibly can! If you don't mind a little heart-break in your books I suggest you grab a copy of this one for yourself!

Today I have the wonderful Kim Purcell, author of Trafficked here. She's going to take over for a bit, so I'll just let her take it away!

"How Having Kids Can Help You Become a Successful Author (Or How Not to Blame Your Kids Because You Haven’t Made it Yet)

I’ve always had creative friends. Sculptors. Artists. Poets. Writers. In my 20’s, I heard a phrase repeated often, “I can’t have kids until …” Until my first book is published. Until I’ve established myself as a sculptor. Until my record is produced by a big label. Until someone produces my play. Until my paintings are in a museum. Until I make it.

Well, the truth is that your dreams might take a while. There are people in their early 20’s who manage to achieve their artistic/creative goals, but many people don’t. It doesn’t mean they can’t; it just means they haven’t done it yet. I saw my female friends move into their 30’s and feel disheartened that they still hadn’t done it, and their biological clock was ticking. It was now or never. They’d still write, they told themselves. (Or do whatever other creative thing they liked to do.) But then they had kids. And they stopped. They gave up. They told themselves that they’d return to it someday when the kids were in school. But the truth is that it’s damn hard to start anything after a five to ten year break.

I always tell people to keep going, and you won’t believe the excuses I’ve heard. “I don’t have room for my painting supplies now that the kid is here.” “I can’t write during naps.” “One hour isn’t enough time.” “I’m too tired after I put the kid to bed.” “We don’t have money for a babysitter.” “I need to go out at night to network if I’m going to be a sculptor.” “I need to clean during naps.” Cleaning or writing? Hmm. Not much of a choice for me.

When I was eight months pregnant, a writing teacher said to me that I could look forward to continuing my writing in another three years. I was determined to show her she was wrong. While my girls were babies, I wrote the whole time. We had no babysitter for years. I wrote during naps. I wrote while I was breastfeeding. I wrote sitting on the floor with them while they played with my toes. My rule was I had to write every day and if I didn’t write during naps – like maybe they didn’t nap that day or I was driving when they napped – then I had to write after I put them to bed.

I’m not going to say it hasn’t been tough. This last week was tough, in fact. My 4 year old is usually in preschool from 9 to 12 and this is my writing time at this point. It’s not a lot, but I need those beautiful three hours of time. I can get a lot done in three hours. This week both girls were home for Spring break. We had a lot of fun and went to the zoo and hiking and swimming, all kinds of great things. But after a couple days of no writing, I was jonesing to write. I needed it. I felt shaky like a drug addict. I started to get grouchy. Finally, I went to the gym, put them in childcare and, instead of working out, found a corner to write. After I was done, it was such a relief, I was like that smoker who’s been holding out and gets that smoke. I don’t smoke, but I’ve seen that look in their eyes, that total relief as they suck on the cigarette, take the smoke into their lungs and exhale. I’m sure if you’d seen me writing that day, you would have seen that same look.

I need to write. Writing makes me a better mom and a better person. Just as being a mom has made me a better writer. What? You can be a better writer after you have kids? It helped me, that’s all I know.

TRAFFICKED is about a seventeen-year-old girl from Moldova who is forced to work as a slave in the home of a Russian family in Los Angeles. I wrote the first two drafts of TRAFFICKED before I had my first daughter, but the experiences I had parenting our girls helped me write the next 15+ drafts of this novel. I needed those experiences to be able to write Lillian, who’s a pretty terrible mom, but who has dreams like my own. She’s trying to study for the exams to become a doctor in America. I took those really frustrating times I’d had as a mom and imagined how Lillian would react. I also know the intense love you feel for your own kids and put that into Lillian’s character as well.

All of the scenes with Hannah, the main character, or Lillian dealing with the children were more believable after I became a mom. If either character is more like me, it’s certainly Hannah; however, I’m in Lillian too. I’m usually very loving, but like any mom, I have my moments. When I mess up and yell at my kids, I say sorry and hug them close. When writing TRAFFICKED, I imagined a mom who couldn’t say sorry, who took it even further when she was mad. Lillian stops herself from hitting her kids, but then directs all her violent rage at Hannah. In earlier drafts, I saw her as evil. I couldn’t understand how a mother could keep a teenager as a slave and treat her so horribly. She’d have to be the anti-mom, I thought. Then, as I had kids, I found ways to make her more multi-dimensional. What if she wasn’t entirely evil? What if part of her motivation was to help her kids?

I think people should keep writing, painting, creating. It doesn’t need to stop when the kids come along. You never know how they’ll help you. In turn, your example can have a huge impact on your kids. Our girls draw and write all the time. I like to think they’ve been inspired by having a creative dad and a mom who doesn’t give up. They’ve seen me achieve my own dreams and when I tell them they can do anything they want to do, they know it’s true."

I'm not going to bore you with my rambling - I'll let you meet Josh!

Hi Josh, so glad you could stop by!

Thanks. I do what I can to appease the needs of my growing fan base.

Before moving to Carson City High what is your favorite thing you did for the "anti-bullshit division"?

Off the record?Oh. Yeah. It’s an interview. Anyway, I’ve heard of some kids doing some pretty sick stuff like steamlining porn into the flat screen TVs at church during mass. Also, I knew a group of kids who got a few traffic cones, reflective vests, and drilled a hole in Main Street in downtown Sacramento. The authority of bright, glow-in-the-dark orange is never questioned. Then there was this one kid I knew who took the hinges off all the classroom doors, so when the first bell rang, it was mad chaos of falling doors and teachers’ expletives. I’ve just heard of this kind of stuff, if you know what I mean.

What's the first thing that caught your eye about Michal?

She’s fearless. She has a bookie business under the noses of every Carson High authority. High brow, too, you know. She knows her stuff.
But other than that stuff, I have to say I really dig her smile. She doesn’t smile much, but there are times when she doesn’t know I’m looking, and a hint of happiness crosses her face, and it’s just freaking amazing.

First thing that comes to your mind about Mocho?

Honestly, I’m kinda jealous. He knows Michal. Like everything. And it feels like he’s got a way unfair advantage.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I don’t know. Today is what matters, you know. Not five years from today.

Meatlovers Pizza or Pizza with lots of Veggis?

Dude, I’m kind of a pepperoni guy myself. When life is complicated, keep your pizza simple.
