by Saoirse Anton

It’s September (how? Where is this year going? I think I lost a couple of months down the back of the press or between the couch cushions.) which means it is back-to-school season. It also means that after the, slightly, quieter summer months it is back-to-theatre season too. And where better to start back than at Dublin Fringe Festival? Tackling any busy festival programme and figuring out what to see can be more daunting than the task of finding lunchboxes, ties and calculators that have been abandoned since June! Luckily for you, I’m here to set your syllabus and get you started with some of my top Fringe recommendations!

Muster

The festival programme this year has a feast of multidisciplinary approaches to the stage, and this one in particular caught my eye. Described as a “live concept album blending spoken-word, rap and storytelling,” this new work from Dagogo Hart promises an insightful and courageous exporation of black masculinity, friendship, inheritance & legacy.

Arborlogues: A Botanical Recital Performed for one Tree

One of the reasons I love theatre festivals, and particularly fringe ones, is the likelihood of finding something odd or unusual that I might not otherwise have had the chance to experience. Arborlogues from Ofo Theatre definitely falls into that category. An experience for one audience member, and one tree, at a time, Arborlogues has been performed around the world for numerous people and numerous trees, inviting the audience member/participant to spend 15 minutes in gentle exchange with the chosen tree, guided by a script that brings them through a collection of stories, prompts and actions. If you’re keen to experience something truly new and different this Dublin Fringe Festival, then this production may be the one for you!

Afronauts

This production from Circus Zambia and Wake the Beast, co-produced by Civic Theatre and Dublin Fringe Festival, looks set to be a lot of fun. Described as “the story of the greatest space mission you have never heard of,” this production recounts the true story of Edward Mukuka Nkoloso, a man with a plan to send Africa’s first astronauts into the cosmos amidst the Space Race of the 1960s. Afronauts promises an entertaining story told through remarkable circus skills & visual spectacle.

Trolley Boy

Sitting writing this column just after returning from doing the weekly shop, a chore I do not enjoy, I found myself drawn to this production from Diarmuid Armstrong Mayock. A work of surreal dance theatre, Trolley Boy tells the story of Bob, a man lost in an endless shop. Another to add to the list of unusual but exciting and intriguing works that you find in festival programmes!

SOAK: The Perfect Man

Another multidisciplinary dive into the complexities of masculinity and grief, I suspect SOAK and Muster may be good companion pieces in the Dublin Fringe Festival programme, each taking a different approach to a similar theme. Described as “part concert, part confession, part reckoning,” this contemporary music-theatre experience from Samuel Yakura and +353 promises a challenging and absorbing look at vulnerability, masculinity and healing.

Kafka’s Doll

Theatre Lovett are always a reliable go-to for excellent family-friendly theatre, and I would expect Kafka’s Doll to continue that trend. Offering a glimpse into the imagination of a literary giant, Kafka’s Doll sets out to tell the story of Franz Kafka’s encounter with a tearful child that restored a “fragile but vital faith in the human spirit,” as he writes letters from the child’s lost doll, telling stories of the doll’s grand adventures. Sure to be a captivating, playful, play, Theatre Lovett’s Kafka’s Doll looks delightful to children and adults alike.

Pretty Vacant

The Performance Corporation are another reliable company for delivering high-quality original theatre. Fresh of their run of Tír an Traonigh in Belmullet, they are bringing a very different piece to the Tailor’s Hall as part of the Dublin Fringe Festival programme. A “high-octane musical satire” exploring topics of gentrification and the property crisis, Pretty Vacant tells the surreal and entertaining story of Carmilla, a former Eurovision star turned property mogul, and her attempt to “rebrand” the Liberties.

Across the Fence

Capturing the story of a relationship between a traveller man and a settled girl, Across The Fence promises a beautifully human story about prejudice, trust and connection. Across the Fence is also part of Dublin Fringe Festival's Home Ground community takeover performances initiative, a brilliant section of the programme that facilitates artists to co-create safe, celebratory audience spaces for the communities their work represents.

This is only a tiny taste of the smorgasbord that makes up the Dublin Fringe Festival programme this year, but I hope it helps you start deciding where you want to delve in. My number one rule for any festival programme is to keep an open mind – you never know what you might discover!

A Dublin Fringe Festival Curriculum

A Christmas Carol at the Viking Theatre, Dublin – December 2026

The Viking's ever-popular A Christmas Carol returns to Clontarf — three

About the show

Because I’m Worth It follows the success of Barbara Scully’s first one-woman show, Older, Bolder, Wiser. It returns to the theme of getting older, with a new focus: in her sixties, Barbara is finally able to put herself front and centre of her life, having realised she is “bloody well worth it”.

“There are now things I don’t do anymore because I am worth it, like flying Ryanair for example… never mind the garish, migraine-inducing interior décor and being roared at about raffle tickets like I am at a local GAA fundraiser.”

There are also things she now insists on doing because she is worth it — which is where she comes unstuck at times, with hilarious results, from stories of pampering herself in spas abroad onwards. Barbara serves an audience — mainly women over 40 — she feels is not well served by stand-up comedy, and her shows carry an underpinning message: don’t fear getting older, because with a little luck it can be a wonderful phase of life.

What audiences say

“Wonderful show — our gang had a blast.” · “Barbara you were brilliant. Had a great night, absolutely hilarious and such a treat.” · “Ribs hurting today. Really enjoyed the show.”

About the play

“Imagine turning up at the door of a house. A house you’ve never seen before, in a town you don’t know. A house you’re going to be living in, with people you’ve never met. And all you have is a black bin bag. A bag that carries your whole life…”

Inspired by real stories, Quintessence Theatre use their innovative physical ensemble storytelling to explore the lived experience of children in care in Ireland and expose the failures of the Irish foster care system. Devised by the company, SOME OF OUR CHILDREN is a compelling — and often comedic — drama that amplifies the voices of some of the State’s most vulnerable citizens. Audiences at earlier performances called it “true to life”, “incredibly powerful” and “emotional and hard-hitting, but also funny”.

About the company

Quintessence Theatre come to The New Theatre following their national tours of Cracks, The Curious Case of Albert Cashier and Belfast Girls.

by Saoirse Anton

It’s been a while since I have written one of these columns! A year, in fact.

For a lot of that year I stepped out of the loop of theatre news and happenings, I went longer than I’ve ever gone without setting foot in a theatre, and have only recently been stepping back into this world. For lots of us it is very common to have long interludes between visits to the theatre, and sometimes it can be daunting to step back in when you have been out of the loop. Luckily, your friendly neighbourhood theatre columnist has returned to furnish you with recommendations! So read on for my advice on what to see, whether you are a seasoned theatre-goer, returning after a hiatus, or venturing into a venue for the first time.

If you want something unusual…

Tír an Traonaigh

Belmullet, Co. Mayo - 19-23 August 2026

In a new collaboration with An Taibhdhearc, Performance Corporation promise to take you on a journey with this new production, quite literally. They invite you to “Step aboard our bus for an unforgettable theatrical journey through the spectacular landscape of North Mayo, where family, biodiversity and the future of the Irish language collide.” In what looks set to be a fascinating blend of theatre, music, dance and visual spectacle, Tír an Traonaigh (Land of the Corncrakes) tells the story of two sisters feuding over land, nature and “a noisy little bird.”

If you want a feast…

Try a festival!

We are already deep into festival season, with Kilkenny Arts Festival currently underway, and several others on the horizon, including Dublin Fringe Festival, Dublin Theatre Festival, Baboró Festival and the Belfast International Arts Festival, to name a few. A festival is always a good way to dip a toe back into the world of live performance – you can often find a selection of free events, and a varied programme can hold something for every mood. We’ll cover my pick of the Dublin Fringe Festival and Dublin Theatre Festival programmes next month, but if you’re looking for an immediate festival fix, check out the last few days of the Kilkenny Arts Festival. Particularly intriguing are Anchorpoint, produced by detached.collab, The Last Tape from Gare St Lazare, and Jack Phelan’s audio-visual show Rift.

If you want something to make you think…

Synapses

The New Theatre, Dublin - 19-21 August 2026

Described as “honest, dynamic and charming” by The Independent, Gúna Nua’s Synapses at the New Theatre is a play exploring the realities of young families. It follows the story of a divorced couple who are trying to find a better way to live after finding themselves arguing constantly over money, access and parenting style. Sure to be thought-provoking and engaging, Synapses runs at The New Theatre from 19-21st August.

If you want a musical …

An tÉalú

Townhall Theatre, Galway - 29 August 2026

A musical is always a good bet to get you back into the theatre, and what better than a brand new musical? An tÉalú is a new Irish-language musical from Seán Óg Ó Duinnin that tells the story of rebellious nursing-home resident Síle and her friends as they attempt to break out of Lios Álainn nursing home. Promising to be an entertaining evening, An tÉalú is for Gaeilgóirs and non-Irish speakers alike, with subtitles throughout to ensure everyone gets to enjoy the show.

If you want a breath of fresh air…

The Gathering Field

Burthon’s Field, Curtlestown, Wicklow - 23 August 2026

You don’t have to go indoors to go to the theatre! Make the most of the summer weather and head on down to Edwina Guickan’s The Gathering Field as part of The Shaking Bog Festival in Wicklow. This family-friendly event promises a joyful celebration of Lúghnasa with traditional games, a ceilí and performances from fourteen renowned musicians and dancers.

If you want to revisit a classic…

Catalpa & The Catalpalyst

Civic Theatre Tallaght 19th August and Smock Alley Theatre 25-29th August

Donal O’Kelly’s Catalpa is a classic of modern Irish theatre. First staged in 1995, Catalpa remains one of the best one-man plays I have seen, and O’Kelly is bringing it back to the stage this month at the Civic Theatre in Tallaght. Alongside this revival, he is also bringing a new work The Catalpalyst to Smock Alley Theatre. A creative re-exploration of for the 150th anniversary of the 1876 Catalpa whaleship rescue of six Irish prisoners from Fremantle, The Catalpalyst promises to be an urgent and insightful piece of theatre. Not to be missed!

If you want a family day out…

Colourings

Draíocht Theatre Blanchardstown, until 12th September 2026

Not strictly a theatre event, but it brings you in the door of Draíocht Theatre, Blanchardstown to celebrate their 25th Anniversary. Colourings is a new children’s exhibition by visual artist, Lucy Hill. Hill has reimagined her sketchbook drawings into soft sculptures alongside designer Orla Langan, accompanied by a soundscape by sound designer, Adam Kennedy. Designed to be an interactive exhibition, Colourings is accompanied by a programme of workshops and a creative response space. A beautiful introduction to visual art for the whole family to enjoy!

Whether you fancy a dance, some exciting audio-visual spectacle, or an intriguing play, head on down to your local venue and let’s get back into the theatre and take our seats together!

Getting Back to the Theatre

Vivaldi's Four Seasons Recomposed at Monkstown Church

The Mystery Ensemble perform Vivaldi's Four Seasons alongside Max Richter's

Rather than presenting one unified version, the concert takes you on a seasonal journey, alternating between Vivaldi's vivid Baroque original and Richter's contemporary reimagining — each movement a conversation between centuries, between tradition and innovation, between the handwritten and the cinematic.

Max Richter gained global recognition with Recomposed: Vivaldi – The Four Seasons, a project that blends classical strings with ambient minimalism. Since its release in 2012 the album has topped charts and become a modern classic in its own right. Alongside Richter's radiant textures, Vivaldi's masterful depiction of nature, life and time remains ever powerful. Expect a thoughtful curation of interwoven movements from both composers, plus bonus tracks from Richter's solo albums and film scores, in the ethereal beauty and exquisite acoustics of Monkstown Parish Church.

The concert is organised by the creative agency Red Events & Distribution Ltd., known for producing cultural experiences in atmospheric venues across Europe and beyond, including candlelit concerts and immersive performances combining video art and sound.

Frequently asked questions

When is Vivaldi's Four Seasons Recomposed on at Monkstown Church?

The concert takes place at Monkstown Church on Friday 27 November 2026 at 9pm.
