There are not many tomboys walking the runways of Milan.

The models at Jil Sander were the closet, but beautiful brows and eyes sparkled with femininity.

Even the gamines at Emporio Armani were rouged up harlots.

So I am going to guess androgyny just doesn't fly in Milan.

But here comes Tilda to the rescue!

Not in Milan but in a video along with Andrej Pejic, Saskia de Brauw and, wait for it, BOWIE!

Well, it is a Bowie video for his single The Stars (Are Out Tonight). But when you add Tilda to the credits the video instantly becomes a film and glorious.

Tonight Chicago is reported to accumulate over a foot of snow for the first time this winter.

Since snow has waited so late in the season to show up, I had already moved on with picking out spring and summer pieces to add to my closet.

So with my mind on Spring, I will most likely have a dilemma when I wake up tomorrow morning. I'll be reaching for cotton pastels, knowing very well I need to pull out the woolens. It might cause a brain freeze. I'll change 20 times, miss the train and then be late for work.

Worrying about this scenario while browsing through the Fall 2013 Milan runway shows couldn't have been better timing. Coming across the Ports 1961 show helped all my anxiety melt away.

I now have three options to reference in the morning.

1. Wear a crisp white button down under those grey woolens with a SKIRT.

2. Wear short sleeves and cover those bare arms with gloves.

3. Mix up colors.

Getting dressed into my hybrid spring/fall outfit will be a breeze!

I can still day dream of Spring without consequence while facing the great white tundra of Chicago.

Oh, androgyny....this is your moment.

It couldn't be a bigger moment unless Bowie, The Eurythmics, and Roxy Music announced a world tour AND Tilda Swinton tagged along as the MC. That would be a moment.

But that is just a young girl's dream and what we are witnessing today on the runways is reality. The New York shows were loaded with tomboyish models in checks and plaids in drab colors, heavy fabrics, and over sized silhouettes.

Straight out of the blocks American women's wear designers nailed the masculine aura. I'll be hoping Milan, London, and Paris can keep the boy-meets-girl momentum going, and going, and going.....

New York is the best setting for showcasing the season's greatest hits of the runway, right?

Well, both Elle and Harper's Bazaar both believed so.

The 2002 January HB issue took a softer look at the collections and the city. Just 4 months after September 11, 2001 the editorial includes the people of NYC and an announcement where to send donations to the families of the fallen service men and women of that day. Oh yeah, and Giselle.

In 2012 Elle said forget people! All we need are shoulders, eye shadow and two hunky dudes, obviously not real city workers.

But the effect is not lost with either spread. Clothes this good can hold their own against the magnificent backdrop of New York City.

Fashion Projects Issue #4

I highly recommend finding an issue of Fashion Projects Issue #4.

This particular volume focuses on fashion criticism, and includes interviews with Stefano Tonchi, Suzy Menkes, Lynn Yaeger, among others of the same field.

My copy is already filled with notes and post-its after rereading multiple times.

And after each read the following question/answer with Robin Givhan, becomes more and more important to my relationship with fashion and blogging.

Fashion Projects: We were talking about types of fashion writing and the marginalization of fashion-part of it comes from an association with femininity. You've written about the gender divide in fashion. The article that you penned on Victoria Beckham and the reception of fashion designers comes to mind. Do you think that is true of fashion writing? Do you think that gender has impacted your career or role as a writer?

Robin Givhan: ...I think there is an incredible amount of sexism at play in the way the fashion industry is perceived and in the way the coverage of the fashion industry is perceived. I don't think you have to look any further than the ways in which the auto industry or sports are covered....if it is just a matter of getting from point A to point B, then you would buy a Ford Fiesta and you get there. The difference is the manner in which you want to arrive and what the kind of car you drive says about you and your appreciation for the technology of that car. All of those things can also really be said about the fashion industry. If it were just a matter of not going naked, we could all just wear Gap t-shirts, but clothes mean more then that. So every nasty comment made about French couture-where a dress could cost $25,000-we could have the same conversation about Rolls Royce...I'm just as offended by someone who could spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on a Bentley...I do think the fashion industry is a victim of terrible sexism, and it comes from both men and women. I think there a lot of women who believe that they should feign any interest whatsoever in fashion, it will deplete their IQ.

Since I have never been interested in the business side of fashion, I find myself explaining fashion as my art form, my creative outlet. Which is true, but the conversation between Michelle Labrague and Givhan allowed me to admit I am attracted to the dialogue between fashion and culture.
Beyond trends, fashion not only reflects personal statements, but also clique, club, or even a dynasty's outlook on society and it's members.
I know its obvious but Givhan's words clicked after having the conversation with my self for years, and never understood how to put the thoughts into words.
So talk to me.

Seems like the fashion industry is black and white mood.

So it couldn't be a better time to share the best of black and white editorials of my archives.

An eerie beach vibe gives this black and white theme more character than the basic graphic point-of-view.

I remember exactly where I was at that moment.

I was at work on lunch and had just caught up with my Instagram feed.

As soon as the photo loaded, I noticed the shoes. I have spectator radar and these are on platforms.

And there are gold ones and loafers and oxfords, all on platforms!

Disoriented, I look up to the hats. Are those straw hats?

And the shoulders, where are the shoulders? The shapes are sublime.

Hey, that peplum looks very Céline-esque. Oh, that buckle. It is Céline.
I honestly felt I had shared a collective 'ew-ahh' moment with the entire fashion community.
I won't say fashion history has been made, because this is a pre-collection. Phoebe will tweak the pleats, over sized silhouettes, and cinched waists to create a main collection which will most likely change the way we all dress.
If she has not already.
