Come join us in the heartland to learn about key issues of the sustainable agriculture education research and practice community! The conference will provide an open exchange of information among students, faculty, staff, administrators, student farm managers, farmers, non-profits, community organizers and others. Students and faculty in the Graduate Program in Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University, in cooperation with Marshalltown Community College and Michigan State University, have organized three days of cutting-edge, participatory-based programming. Conference participants will have the opportunity to lead in-depth discussions, share experiences, and exchange resources in a variety of thematic topics, including: * Teaching and Learning for Sustainable Outcomes, * Sustainable Agriculture Programming, * Facilitating Social Change and Community Development, and * Exploring Opportunities and Challenges within the Institution. Attendees will also have the opportunity to visit local learning farms. Regional food, art, and lively music will be featured throughout the meeting, concluding with an Iowa-styled supper! To support the Marshalltown Community College Entrepreneurial Agriculture Program’s GLove Project, we request that participants bring new work gloves of any size or type. These will be distributed to local farm workers and immigrant horticultural workers.

They are hosting their annual national conference from July 29 to August 2 in Portland, Maine, with field trips to Lewiston and Boston. Calling all student leaders and campus organizers! This summer, the Real Food Challenge invites all young activists concerned with agriculture, nutrition, social justice, climate change, sustainability, and the health of our communities and economy - to join us at a Real Food Student Leadership Training. Equipped with new skills and connections, we will be at the forefront of a vibrant and diverse national youth movement, getting real about organizing for real food. Real Food trainings are intentionally designed to be both fun and serious. Be prepared for dance parties and team building games as well as discussions about power, privilege and oppression and the role of students as social movement leaders. Trainings will also be highly participatory--workshops will be interactive (not too academic) and participants will be asked to take on a variety of leadership roles from the start--from helping cook meals to facilitating activities and workshops. This is a great opportunity to connect with other young leaders on the east coast and leave with concrete skills to move your campaign for real food forward on your campus. This is geared toward students who want to take the challenge--to push their dining services to commit to 20% real food procurement by 2020. Workshops will range from campaign planning to fundraising to using media to working with dining services. The weekend is designed to be both fun and serious, AND highly participatory. Come prepared to share, learn, and be inspired by others.
