I’m not a native English speaker nor a pro in labor laws, but I got under my belt a meter of writing experience,answering questions about labor laws, last will and testament, custody battle, did I mention crimes? Yep. I also covered a bit - all in US settings. Then, I applied for a writing job: A US Labor Laws centered article writing gig.

A few minutes after I pressed the SEND button, my application bounced big time, PAK! I didn’t know my application is rubber filled.

Oh, there goes the reason for the bounce. @#$%^! The soul who automatically rejected my application (a person or a bot, who knows) had a note: “Spam application”. WTH! How did he know my application is a spam? I didn’t eat Spam (sarcasm to the max) when I wrote my full-of-desire-to-be-hired application letter.

Angry? Nope. My heart ached a sec but I'm fine. Thanks to my favorite writers (i.e. Carol, Oni, Sophie). They inspired me to move forward.

How to Drive Away Flies Effectively

I hate flies especially those in food markets. It annoys me when vendors don’t bother to get rid of them nor take the initiative to zero in flies.

In fairness, there are some enterprising vendors who find ways to get rid of flies.

Pom-poms. These fluffly colorful balls of ribbon, wool, straws and papers are usually for decoration. Pom poms with long cut-outs are used in cheer dance. But enterprising vendors used them to manually ward-off flies too.

Those who want to automate the process used cheap ceiling fans with paper (or plastic) cut-outs at least six inches in length pinned on each blade.

Another way to ward off flies is to fill a clear plastic bag with clear water. Hang the bag from the ceiling. The movement and refraction of light by water will baffle and scare flies away.

Kawasan Waterfalls: A Haven For Waterfalls of Natural Spring Water Lovers

It was on March 22, 2012 after the graduation ceremony when I had a chance to talk with Auntie Carmen. We talked as if there was no tomorrow.

Because I skipped breakfast that morning, I got this sick feeling in my stomach. I told Auntie Carmen that we set another time to continue where we left off. Toward the end of our chat she asked me, “Where do we spend summer this April?”

Summer…

I always have 101 reasons to NOT spend on vacation…yet. However, my family wanted to relax and unwind even for a little time (get off the daily routine once in a while.)

Needs Relaxation

Like my kids, Auntie Carmen wants to relax after braving all types of weather selling “siomai” (also called pork dumplings.) I told my children about this and they smiled with a twinkle in their eyes: perfect for a book cover.

With so many destinations on file, we had a hard time choosing where to go. Not that we were choosy, but it’s the cash that counts.

My children were eager to spend summer outside our home. I assumed they have a bee in their bonnet. But how do I handle the expenses without burning a hole in my pocket?

Kawasan: a Hidden Paradise in the South

“Let’s go to Kawasan!” said Jennifer (the youngest daughter of my auntie.) In my years of stay in Cebu, I haven’t gone to Kawasan. So, we shortened the list (actually, there was no list - we don’t have the luxury to spend. It’s just a product of our imagination.)

Kawasan is one of Cebu’s prides, a haven for waterfalls of natural spring water lovers. This clear as crystal waterfall is located in the mountains of Barangay Matutinao, Badian, 130 kilometers southwest of Cebu City – a three hour bus drive.

We rented an eighteen seater multicab (a multi van.) Take note, the multivan can carry eighteen passengers…eighteen SLIM passengers to be clear.

And since we have with us some extras…(shhh...some honest stored fats) do you think we can give our legs a break during the four hour ride?

It’s a tough ride, but the different jaw-dropping vistas somehow ease our leg cramps.

As we set foot in Barangay Matutinao, we were as free as a bird. I gawked and took photos whatever take my fancy – nature formed hilly rocks; clean water runs on and flows like snake; picturesque trees; chairs; nipa huts; local and foreign tourists who I believe love and enjoy outdoor adventure; birds; children eating bananas and a lot more.

A Round of Leg Cramps

We won’t be able to get to the waterfalls unless we hike. This is the rule. So, hiking all the way to the waterfalls was another round of leg cramps.

We gently stretch our muscles and leisurely and slowly begin hiking. This long walk, I believe, is by itself our path to weight loss.

Remember, we have to bid goodbye to unwanted fats. I felt that I lose 60 percent of the muscles of my face (how I wish it was 100 %.)

My mother-in-law who is on her 70’s had enough of it. Halfway before the entrance to another long walk going to the waterfalls, she can no longer set off on another step.

She was not sure if she could walk another mile. Instead, she settled in a small cottage (still a few hundred meters away from the waterfalls.)

We arrived at the site, at last! Yahooo!

Gladly, my mother-in-law endured the trek. How did she do that? My husband’s insistence did the trick.

The waterfalls were so awesome: an epitome of picture perfect paradise. I took photos I considered masterpiece: my children diving like wounded eagles, great pose and sorry for the wacky pose. Whatever tickled us pink is a gem photo for keeps.

Kawasan waterfalls were continually spilling waters over the edges of mountains. I learned that there were other waterfalls here.

Further up the strenuous track was the second waterfall, which was a smaller version of the first stage. The third phase was another small version of multiple overflowing waterfalls.

What was more staggering was the 4th stage. It’s not a waterfall but natural Jacuzzi pools of a river. It’s like a hot tub framed by a natural spring.

The water was so refreshing that you could make money by bottling and selling them (NOT allowed, of course.) You can freely drink the crystal clear water without worrying about water-borne germs.

Hiking Boots Vs. My Two Inches Sandals

But before we get into the 4th stage of this snake like paradise, we have to watch our steps to endure the strength-sapping, treacherous wet trail. We have to brave a narrow bamboo bridge, large boulders, and steep steps.

Have I known the trail conditions early, I should have worn my hiking sandals. Whoa, I have with me a pair of two inches sandals perfect for a shopping mall escapade.

My kids were happy splashing around in the water in the fourth phase of the thrill. I want to get there (also my sis and my auntie.) However, we can't get there in a flash. We have to traverse the same steep, treacherous trail.

Along the way we had to negotiate some perilous ascending path up to the natural Jacuzzi proudly wearing my two inches sandals.

When my steps slipped and nearly lose my foot hold, I’ve decided there was no point wearing my sandals back on…I rather walk barefoot. The mud colored my feet brown, but I managed to rinse them under running water.

The hike was so grueling but well worth it. When we arrived at the fourth phase for our hike, we were surprised to see lots of people swimming, and enjoying the natural Jacuzzi.

I took photos of my children, sister and friends enjoying the free flowing water. Now, it’s my turn to feel the water massaging my body.

I was hesitant at first because I am not a huge fan of cold water. But not experiencing it is another story. So, I brave the cold, capture and finished every detail of comforting free-flowing waters.

The cool natural Jacuzzi has a forceful flow that gives me free massage while enjoying nature.

A Court Order Needed

Looking at my kids enjoying the water, I think I need a court order to force them to stop. After the words of agreement, we began again that treacherous trek back to the first stage.

As we walk through the nature trails at the beautiful Kawasan, we were laughing at my uncle Donk’s antics. He made us laugh while providing valuable information on how we can go all the way up and come down without the danger of slipping.

As soon as we arrived at the first stage waterfalls, armed with our life jackets, we again rode the bamboo raft maneuvered manually by two men using two long big ropes that took us directly to the waterfalls. The falls massage our bodies.

When the clock strikes one in the afternoon, we returned the life jackets, paid the bill amounting to 1,900.00 (400.00 for the labor fee and 1,500 for the raft, cottage, and life jackets.)

We packed our things; cleaned the area, and musing about the long walk back to the parking lot. As expected, my mother-in-law was unable to walk. The multicab fetched her though.

Time for a long travel back home: another four hours of uncomfortable ride? Not anymore. We very much enjoyed our Kawasan escapade and with my uncle and children’s antics, four hours riding time was not a bad ride at all.

According to Dr. Web, a Russian antivirus company, a new variant of Flashback Trojan is in celebratory mood after they successfully infected more than 500,000 Macs, possibly reaching 600,000 with 274 bots most likely getting into the Apple headquarters in Cupertino, CA.

Flashback Trojan is widely known to be a Mac Trojan horse that’s been visible in the market since 2011. This malicious software that cloaked as installer for Adobe Flash relied solely on users to install them.

When this Trojan variant was uncovered last year by Intego, a security firm, people were already warned with the fix in tow. However, the never-say-die attitude of Flashback Trojan makers brings them a new tactic to hail - installation no longer needs the users intervention.

Flashback Trojan Back with a Vengeance

Yes, Flashback Trojan is back with a vengeance. They changed tactics - and this time, users are no longer part of the process. Flashback Trojan can now infect a Mac computer by just a mere visit to a website. They no longer pretend to be an installer or a Mac software update or a Java updater.

The newest variant dubbed as OSX/Flashback.K by F-Secure security researchers, no longer need an administrator’s password. Once a user visits the malicious website, voila, Flashback successfully enters their computer without them knowing. This weakness is found in Java SE6 identified as CVE-2012-0507.

Sad to say, there is currently no fix for this new malware on the Mac. Since the discovery, Apple has been cast in a bad light. But knowing the company’s stand on rolling updates, the patch for this issue may be due in the not too distant future.

Mac users don’t have to throw their towel yet. They have to take down power on the Flashback Trojan. One good step is to disable Java. Next is to be aware and to know how trustworthy are the websites they visit. In general, the best immediate “cure” for this new type of virus is…common sense.

Smartphone Workers are “killing” Themselves to Find the Cash

A nation confirmed for its cultural stability – China. Their flexible workforce is in a position to labor long hours for little pay - the sight seemed to be attractive.

More than 2,000 workers crushed inside a local high-tech factory, upturned a vehicle, broke computers, thrown things at cops trying to regain control, and successfully closing the company which produces cellular phone.

Statistics indicate an astounding 91,000 laborers perished associated with work-related fatalities in 2008, according to the China Labor Bulletins, a new Hong Kong NGO that monitors labor concerns.

Workers may have legal rights in China and the government authorities are supposed to enforce employee basic safety. However, these rights are not strictly enforced resulting to a staggering 13,700 registered cases of work-related disease.

Moves to go on strike to demand implementation of the safety measure are dangerous in China needless to say, given that independent unions do not exist. But Wintek company whose workers gambled for their bonuses have luckily won.

In spite of this, the health issue continues to linger, and workers appear to have been held in the dark and sorry to say - can always be.

In interviews, text messaging, online postings and media reports, employees point out that they became mindful of hexane use at the company just in July and also August of last year whilst workers first began displaying signs and symptoms. Reports showed a numbing, prickling sensation in workers arms and legs.

Apple company once reported to have contracted Wintek Company never openly confirmed the connection. They have not act in response to messages or calls or perhaps a comprehensive report on e-mailed issues in search of response to situation in Suzhou China.

In the span of 18 years, 1990-2007, approximately 80,000 and more people were injured in hot tubs and spas. The researchers from the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, headed by Lara B. McKenzie studied the data and found that from 1990 to 2007 hot tub accidents are notably rising from 2,549 in 1990 to 6,646 people in 2007.

Approximately half the injuries were owing to falling. 10% was for heat overexposure and near-drowning got the 2.5 percent. Roughly 7 percent of the accidents ended in a hospital.

Dr. McKenzie said, “You should only use the hot tub for 10 to 15 minutes, and the temperature should be no higher than 104 degrees.” Another precautionary measure to consider is to cover the hot tubs with hot tub covers that have safety lock features. If you can’t be trusted with small things; what more with bigger things? This is a common cliché, yet it conveys a powerful message. How powerful?

In every good deed – there exist a bad! This is a fact and fact is reality. Being honest has its ups and downs. In government service, if a worker is honest, his accomplishments will be tainted with issues-enough to make him look like a refugee in his own land.

Now, the dishonest worker will be crowned with so much “pogi” points-- to the extent of giving him recognition that only his cohorts knew “what, why, and how.”

Why Is this So?

It starts in the family. In a family where virtue of honesty is declared like a presidential decree, do you think an opposition party will triumph? Hmmm, my guess is as good as yours! Of course NO! However, in a society where dishonesty is “not punishable by law”, who cares if you are honest?

The question is---Is there still Hope?
