A ‘Big Brother’ style event at Wythenshawe Hall is set to produce a new type of reality TV.

Visitors, or ‘hallmates’, at the Tudor treasure won’t have to face life in a TV goldfish bowl – but they will be invited into a Big Brother-style Diary Room to share their memories of the historic building.

The filming is part of an event dubbed ‘Love Your Hall’ on Saturday February 16, when the hall will be reopened to the public.

At the end of the session the footage will be edited by Salford University journalism students into a short film, to be showed at the next open weekend in March.

Wythenshawe Hall was forced to close in 2011 while long-term funding was sought for its future. But, thanks to the support of a friends group working with council staff, it has been able to reopen for specific events once a month.

The majority of the volunteers signed up to the friends group during the Wythenshawe Games in July – the town’s own version of London 2012 – when the Tudor hall was open for entire event. The games ran over nine days and 10,000 people got involved with the sporting and cultural programme, which centred around Wythenshawe Park and the hall.

The Love your Hall event, on Saturday 16 February, from 12-4pm, will also include a creative poetry workshop with Manchester poet Mike Garry. There will also be craft activities for families.

Council Nigel Murphy, Executive Member for the Environment at Manchester City Council, said: “Wythenshawe Hall has played a cultural role in the lives of generations of Wythenshawe residents and countless visitors – it’s a great twist now to have a modern take on maintaining the historic memories of such an imposing building.”
