Like almost everyone else, we were shocked and saddened to hear the news that Whitney Houston passed away today at the age of 48. TMZ reports that Houston’s body was discovered in her room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel this afternoon, and the cause of death has not yet been determined.

Her death has devastated the entertainment world (and the regular world, too) and though her life had been troubled at times, she left a legacy behind that affected countless people. Here’s a little snippet of that legacy, in the form of Houston’s performance from the 1999 VH1 DIVAS show. Our hearts go out to her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, and the rest of her family. She is gone but never, ever forgotten.

Whitney Houston died this afternoon at the age of 48. The Grammy award-winning performer’s death was confirmed to the Associate Press by her rep Kristen Foster. According to TMZ, paramedics were allegedly called to the Beverly Hilton hotel earlier today after Houston was found “unresponsive” in her room; though an attempt was made to revive the singer, she was pronounced dead at 3:55pm. Beverly Hills police Lt. Mark Rosen has since verified that the singer did pass away at the hotel. Houston leaves behind one child, daughter Bobbi Kristina, with ex Bobby Brown.

While Whitney Houston famously struggled with drug and alcohol abuse, entering rehab as recently as last May, she will be remembered most for her two Emmys, six Grammys, 30 Billboard Music awards and 22 American Music Awards. More importantly, no other person knew exactly how much we wanted to dance with somebody who loves us. She will be desperately missed.

Lady Gaga arrives at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards

The 54th annual Grammy Awards are just a day away and everyone in the MTV Newsroom is starting to get excited. Will Beyoncé” show up? How will Adele sound in her first major live performance since undergoing surgery to repair a vocal cord hemorrhage? What color will Katy Perry”’s hair be? What will Lady Gaga” wear? We can’t wait to find out. But if last year’s show is any indication, it’s safe to say that just about anything could happen at Los Angeles’ Staples Center on Sunday night.

The quirk factor was high at last year’s Grammys, and it got started long before a single award was handed out. Lady Gaga’s red carpet arrival inside of a pearlescent egg carried by four scantily clad dudes wearing prosthetics on their faces and shoulders should have been reminder enough that the unusual is the norm at the Grammys. But in case it wasn’t, the show itself delivered Muppets and Katy Perry on a swing. We’ve rounded up five big moments from last year’s show to remind you why the Grammys are the craziest awards show of the year.

» Lady Gaga arrives in that freakin’ egg, er, “vessel.”
Never one to just casually stroll the red carpet in a pretty dress, Lady Gaga went to great lengths to make every element of her Grammy appearance part of a larger art piece that culminated in the performance of her then-new single “Born this Way.” It all started on the red carpet, when she arrived already inside her “vessel,” later claiming to Jay Leno that she’d been in a state of artistic incubation inside it for 72 hours. (Did you just roll your eyes? We think you just rolled your eyes!) The pop star emerged to deliver a full-voiced — if otherwise joyless — performance of the song, which at the time was drawing heavy criticism for sounding maybe a little too much like Madonna’s 1989 classic “Express Yourself,” and went on to score three Grammys, including Best Pop Vocal Album for The Fame Monster.

» Did Christina Aguilera fall down after that showstopping Aretha Franklin tribute?
Last year’s ceremony kicked off with an Aretha Franklin tribute featuring Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Florence Welch, Martina McBride and Yolanda Adams. The ladies delivered a rousing group performance of “(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman” before launching into solos of “Ain’t No Way,” “Until You Come Back to Me,” “Think,” “Respect” and “Spirit in the Dark” and closing with “Sisters Are Doin’ It for Themselves” — tearing the roof off the Staples Center. Except all anyone wanted to talk about afterward was how Christina maybe slipped a little in her towering heels.

The performance came just one week after Xtina botched “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl XLV (luckily, Kelly Clarkson’s rendition this year went smoothly), and it seemed like the “Beautiful” singer and “Voice” judge had fully redeemed herself after the debacle, delivering a fantastic vocal performance … until she stumbled onstage, sending gossips into a tizzy that the singer may have been, we’ll say, out of sorts during the performance despite much evidence to the contrary. Or maybe people just like a good near-fall? People get very excited when an entertainer loses her footing — don’t they, Madonna?

Anyway, while everyone tried to make Xtina’s mini-tumble a bigger story than it was, the ladies earned a richly deserved standing ovation for their tribute to Franklin, who was rather ill at the time but has since recovered, lost a bunch of weight, gotten engaged and ended that engagement. (A year in Hollywood time is like five years in normal person time … maybe that’s why everyone is so afraid of getting older!)

Justin Bieber’s medley performance began with an acoustic strum through “Baby” but quickly segued into a raucous take on “Never Say Never,” complete with breakdancing ninja acrobats, fire breathers and a cameo rap by “Karate Kid” star Jaden Smith. Biebs’ mentor Usher even joined in on the fun for a pop-and-lock-heavy dance-off to his hit “OMG.”

But the real story with Bieber at last year’s Grammys was that he lost. To Esperanza Spalding. A critically acclaimed but otherwise unknown jazz performer. Bieber didn’t take the loss so well but his fans went even crazier, expressing the profound sadness they felt and bearing witness to their idol’s defeat by hacking Spalding’s Wikipedia page and changing her middle name to both “Justin” and “Quesadilla.” One fan wrote, “Justin Bieber deserved it go die in a hole. Who the heck are you anyway?” while another scribbled, “So the Esperanza Spalding has only 8 thousand followers on twitter and how many does Justin Bieber has?”

It seems someone forgot to tell the Belieber army that the Grammys are not a popularity contest (well, they’re not supposed to be, anyway) and that one’s amount of Twitter followers is not taken into account when deciding the winners. Duly noted!

If you needed further proof that a lot can change in just a single year, look no further than Katy Perry’s performance at last year’s ceremony. Much like she did on her California Dreams Tour, Perry performed her ballad “Not Like the Movies” while sitting on a swing as video from her elaborate October 2010 wedding to Russell Brand was projected behind her.

Though one would think a sweet performance like Katy’s would shut the gossip mill down for at least a little while, the couple was already back to defending their strange union less than two months later when Brand co-hosted “Live!” with Kelly Ripa. By year’s end, Perry and Brand’s marriage was officially no more, and it made re-watching her performance from last year for the purposes of this article, um, kind of awkward.

» Cee Lo performed “Forget You” with a bunch of Muppets (and Gwyneth Paltrow).
No, no one at your Grammy party spiked your drink. Cee Lo Green, wearing a crazy red bear suit and a rainbow fan of feathers (think peacock), really did perform his Grammy-nominated smash “Forget You” backed by a bunch of singing and dancing Muppets while Oscar-winning home health guru Gwyneth Paltrow writhed atop his piano. Oddly, the whole thing worked like gangbusters and was a big old ball of fun. (And when was the last time anyone associated the word “fun” with Gwyneth Paltrow? Such is the funky power of Cee Lo.)

This year’s show has the potential to outdo last year’s in the water-cooler department with Rihanna and Chris Brown both set to perform under the same roof for the first time since, well, you know … in addition to plenty of interesting collabos, including a special electronic dance music performance set to feature the Foo Fighters (right?), and whatever Lady Gaga decides to get into.

Fans watch a clip from “Breaking Dawn – Part 2″ at Target in Brooklyn, New York, on Friday

Vampires may come out after dark, but there weren’t any bloodsuckers at the Brooklyn, New York, Target store Friday night — just roughly a hundred women (and a few guys) who wanted to meet one. The crowd was anxiously waiting to pick up the DVD of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1,” which was released at midnight.

But it wasn’t just the thrill of re-watching Bella and Edward’s honeymoon that had these NYC Twi-hards — some of whom had been in line since 8 p.m. — bubbling with the kind of excitement normally reserved for a newborn vamp chasing his first kill. At 11 p.m., as promised, exclusive footage from “Breaking Dawn – Part 2″ was shown for the first time at 500 Target stores nationwide.

“Part 1″ may have featured a wedding, but the fandom wars over who should have Bella’s heart were still raging on as the countdown to new footage began, with passionate discussions about Team Edward and Team Jacob popping up throughout the crowd. Friends Patrice Waite, 21, and Cynthia Rodriguez, 22, may not be able to agree on matters of vampire vs. werewolves, but the duo, who lovingly refer to themselves as “Team Switzerland,” can agree that they are psyched to see “Part 2,” even as they reminisced over “Part 1″ scenes such as the romantic wedding and the intense birth of Renesmee.

“In a perfect world,” Waite said, “the scene [I want to see tonight] would be when they are at the cottage, and they go all out [having sex], breaking walls and stuff.”

“I want to see more of Renesmee [in Part 2]” Lauren Perciballi, 25, said. “I’m anxious to see how that works out because it’s a vampire/human, so she’s growing at a rapid pace. I’m interested to see the special effects behind that.”

The actual clip may have been sex-and-Renesmee-free, but the five-minute-long tease certainly worked to entice fans gearing up for the premiere of “Part 2″ next November. Aside from some behind-the-scenes shots of Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner preparing for battle in the woods, the full, exclusive-to-Target scene is from early on in the movie, when Bella discovers a note in a book with instructions from Alice, explaining what to do to get new passports. The clip showcases a heart-to-heart between Edward and Bella and features a swoon-worthy kiss that made the audience scream. The best part? Judging from fan reaction, it was the first shot of vampire Bella, whose red eyes and special-effect-aided speed definitely enticed Twi-hards to be even more excited for the next chapter in the saga.

“[The clip] was good,” Waite said. “Of course, it was just a little clip, making us want more. I wasn’t expecting that, but it was pretty good. I loved seeing [vampire Bella] zoom across the room.”

Rodriguez agreed. “I loved Bella’s piercing red eyes. I thought they did a good job [with the vampire stuff]. I’m even more excited for ‘Part 2′ now.”

Not everyone at the event was a vampire lover though. Special sneak peek or not, the fandom wars continue on. While Kimberlee Imperato was excited about the special footage and loved newly vamped Bella, her daughter, 14-year-old BaileeAnn Darbasie, wasn’t impressed. “[My mom] dragged me here,” she explained. “I’m a Harry Potter fan.”

Whitney Houston and Kelly Price perform in Los Angeles on Thursday

Saturday morning (February 11) at a pre-Grammy brunch, R&B singer Kelly Price talked up her friend and collaborator Whitney Houston, telling MTV News that reports of her friend being anything but OK were erroneous. Later that afternoon, her friend had died at age 48.

“I honestly don’t know what all the craziness is about,” Price told us at the time. “We partied so hard, we all looked a mess when we walked out of the club. But that’s a good party. You sweat. You do that.”

Price was talking about another pre-Grammy event in her honor, where Houston had performed Thursday night. MTV News has obtained exclusive video from that performance, reported to be Houston’s last.

“When I was approached about doing a Grammy celebration party for me, I actually said I would love to do it,” Price told MTV News about Thursday’s event. “I invited a bunch of friends, Whitney Houston among them. … All of my friends came out. They performed. They performed for free. It was an amazing night. My band was there. It ended up being an all-out jam session.”

Price continued, “I wasn’t expecting Whitney to take the stage, but she came up. She got on the stage, and while I was talking to her, she grabbed the microphone and started singing. So that’s kind of cool.”

Tragically, Houston was found dead later Saturday. She was reportedly found at the Beverly Hilton, where a party thrown by her mentor, Clive Davis, is planned for Saturday night.

Through her music, Whitney Houston spread messages of joy, hope and love. Her career will be celebrated by her spirited discography with #1 hits like “Greatest Love of All,” “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “I Will Always Love You.” On Saturday (February 11), the iconic Houston was found dead in a Los Angeles hotel.

Inside the studio, her musical legacy stands as an everlasting ray of light. Outside of it however, Whitney Houston’s life was marred by controversy and tabloid fodder. It became increasingly difficult to separate her legendary track record with her troubles.

1992: On July 18, Houston marries R&B star Bobby Brown. Rumors of drug abuse begin to surface in the years to come. In a 2009, two years after their divorce, Houston goes in-depth about the couple’s volatile relationship on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

2000: In the 1980s and 1990s, Houston was an American sweetheart, releasing #1 singles, involving herself in multiple charities and singing the national anthem at the Super Bowl in 1991. Houston’s troubles with the law begin at the turn of the new millennium after security in Hawaii’s Keahole-Kona Airport finds marijuana in her handbag in January. She is hit with a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge, but it’s dropped months later.

2001: Rampant rumors of drug use swirl around Houston, and after she appeared thinner than usual during a Michael Jackson commemorative concert, the tabloids have a field day. Houston’s then-publicist refutes rumors that the singer had died of a drug overdose. “Whitney has been under stress due to family matters, and when she is under stress, she doesn’t eat,” the publicist says in a statement.

2002: In a “Primetime” interview with Diane Sawyer, Houston addresses the rumors of her drug use. While she admits to using alcohol, marijuana, cocaine and prescription drugs, the vibrant vocalist emphatically denies reports that she’s addicted to crack. “Crack is cheap. I make too much for me to ever smoke crack,” she says. “Let’s get that straight, OK? I don’t do crack. I don’t do that. Crack is whack.”

2004: Even after her gut-wrenching interview with Dianne Sawyer, Houston’s drug problems persist. In 2004, for the first reported time, she enters a facility for drug rehabilitation. She would once again return to rehab a year later in 2005.

2007: Many attributed Houston’s troubles to her rocky marriage to Bobby Brown. In 2006, she filed for divorce, and the next year, she officially splits from the New Edition frontman, winning custody of their daughter Bobbi Kristina.

2009: During a September 2009 sit-down with Oprah Winfrey, Houston opens up about her relationship with Brown. “He was my drug,” she tells Oprah. Houston admits to getting high with her ex-husband and even revealed that Brown had slapped her in the past.

2010: In the 2000s, Houston had begun to lose her footing in music, but in 2010, she hits the road on her Nothing But Love comeback tour. The run is marred by bad reviews.

2011: In May, the singer, still battling drug and alcohol abuse, voluntarily enrolls in an outpatient rehabilitation program.

2012: On Saturday, February 11, Houston is found dead at age 48 in a Los Angeles hotel. While her troubles were well-documented, she left behind an equally unforgettable musical legacy.

Bobby Brown is “distraught” and “in and out of crying fits” Saturday night (February 11) following the news that his ex-wife, Whitney Houston, was found dead.

TMZ.com is reporting that Brown’s New Edition bandmates have been trying to console him as they prepare to perform at a concert in Mississippi.

The R&B group — including Brown — is still expected to go onstage as planned this evening, despite Houston’s death at the age of 48.

Whitney Houston was found dead inside a Beverly Hills hotel room following a 911 call. Beverly Hills Police Lieutenant Mark Rosen said there were “no obvious signs of criminal intent,” and the cause of death is being investigated.

Brown and Whitney were married for 14 years.

According to her official website, Houston sold more than 170 million albums, singles and videos during the course of her storied career.

Many celebrities, including Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera and countless others, have taken to Twitter to express their shock at her death.

The Reverend Al Sharpton also issued this statement: “I am stunned at the passing of Whitney Houston whom I have known since the late 1980’s. I have known her mother, the great gospel singer Cissy, and her aunt Dionne Warwick, down through the years, and the world is saddened by this great loss. Tomorrow Morning at Second Baptist Church in Los Angeles I will call for a national prayer for her family and the memory of Whitney Houston. The morning of the Grammys, the world should pause and pray for the memory of a gifted songbird.”

Whitney Houston, a multiplatinum pop/R&B singer who ruled the charts for decades beginning in the mid-1980s, has died. Houston was 48. Houston’s publicist Kristen Foster confirms to MTV News on Saturday (February 11). According to CNN, Beverly Hills Police confirmed the singer was found dead inside a Beverly Hilton hotel room at approximately 3:55 p.m. PT. The cause of death is being investigated.

Houston had recently staged a comeback in 2009, after a tumultuous divorce from singer Bobby Brown in 2006 after 14 years of marriage. The ex-couple have a daughter together, Bobbi Kristina. Brown and Houston battled substance abuse issues throughout their marriage, and their travails were well-publicized. But in recent years, Houston had made attempts to revive her once thriving music career only to find that her show-stopping voice had gathered some rust.

At her height, Houston was the music industry’s reigning diva, releasing chart-topping albums well into the late 1990s, and earning her place as one of the best-selling artists in the world. Her unparalleled voice and All-American beauty propelled her onto the silver screen as well, with roles in the “The Bodyguard” and “Waiting to Exhale.” The soundtrack for the former film yielded a string of hit singles and broke myriad chart records as well.

Houston, the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston and the late John Houston, was discovered by Arista Records honcho Clive Davis in the early-1980s and he would go on to guide her career to the tune of 170 million albums, singles and videos sold. Just a day before the 54th annual Grammys, the music industry suffered a major loss as one of the greatest voices of all time, Whitney Houston, was found dead Saturday night (February 11). Shocking fans, former collaborators and everybody in between, stars like Mariah Carey, Rihanna and Diddy have taken to Twitter to mourn the late icon.

Mariah Carey, also known for her beautiful voice, took to the social media site to share her memory of the singer/actress. “Heartbroken and in tears over the shocking death of my friend, the incomparable Ms. Whitney Houston,” Carey wrote. “My heartfelt condolences to Whitney’s family and to all her millions of fans throughout the world. She will never be forgotten as one of the greatest voices to ever grace the earth.”

Rihanna was speechless upon hearing the news about the star’s death, simply writing, “No words! Just tears #DearWhitney.”

Quoting a line from Houston’s massive 1992 hit “I Will Always Love You,” Kim Kardashian shared her love for the singer. “Just heard the tragic news that Whitney Houston passed away. I pray for her daughter & loved ones. We will always love you Whitney…,” she tweeted.

Houston’s death hit Nicki Minaj pretty hard, with the Young Money songstress writing, “Jesus Christ, not Whitney Houston. Greatest of all time,” as well as tweeting a vintage photo of the late singer alongside Michael Jackson.

Calling Houston’s death “such a loss,” Jennifer Lopez was another celeb to remember the superstar singer. “One of the greatest voices of our time. Sending out prayers to her family… #R.I.P.Whitney,” she said.

Diddy admitted his disbelief about the the industry’s loss, saying, “Whitney Houston!!! OMG!! I really can’t believe this.. This is one of the saddest days ever…” Toni Braxton confessed her influence from the late-singer.

“My heart is weeping…RIP to the Legendary Diva & Icon Whitney Houston!!!!!” Toni Braxton wrote. “Such an incredible influence over music as a whole! She’s paved the way for every single singer in the music industry. Iconic, legendary, innovating, amazing, humble…1 the best in the world.”

Christina Aguilera, also a big-voiced diva, took to Twitter to share her memory of the singer, confessing that “we have lost another legend.” “Love and prayers to Whitney’s family. She will be missed,” she added.

Usher also chimed in, writing, “R.I.P Whitney Houston… A true icon of our time. Gone too soon. My heart goes out to the family in their time of distress. URIV.”

Immediately after the news was announced, Houston’s legacy appeared all over Twitter’s trending topic list as #DearWhitney, #IWillAlwaysLove you, Waiting to Exhale amongst others trends taking over the top 10 list.
