Are Real Nappies the only Cloth Diaper to Keep Baby dry at night? One customer certainly thinks so:

‘Hello Real Nappies Team:

I wanted to drop you an email to say how impressed I am with your nappies! I have tried a number of dedicated night time nappies on 2 of my boys and none have lasted the night! Until now. I purchased the Toddler Essentials Pack recently. I have recently placed another order for more Real Nappies!

My 24month old boy has dry jammies and a dry bed when he wakes up wearing one of your diapers with the night time booster. That was impressive as no other night diaper has achieved that feat! But the most impressive was this morning. My 5year old autistic son still requires a diaper at night. As he is quite small for his age, I put on a toddler diaper with the booster to see if it could handle a 5year old heavy wetter. And much to my suprise and delight it did!

Thank you so much, I will be recommending you to my friends.

Cheers
Catherine F’

Thanks Catherine it’s great to hear our boosters are working a treat for you in conjunction with our diapers and covers, as parents ourselves we know how important a dry, quiet night is - thanks for spreading the word!

When we decided to use PUL we decided to do so with good reason, in fact we did used to sell cotton and nylon covers too. Find out why we use PUL and what exactly PUL is!

Why we chose PUL

When we decided to use PUL we decided to do so with good reason, in fact we did used to sell cotton and nylon covers too.

Here are the sumarised reasons why we chose PUL:

Real Nappies PUL diaper covers are by far the most waterproof and the most durable fabric,

Our diaper covers are breathable and used in hospitals and daycares by a wide range of babies and skin types,

Real Nappies diaper covers were chosen over any other fabric as they are the most durable, waterproof and breathable against babies delicate skin.

We offer a 2-child guarantee, no way could we do this with the other fabrics.

PUL has become an absolute favourite for cloth diapers all over the world.

Our nylon covers and cotton covers stopped selling simply because people wanted a reliable, durable cover that was extremely waterproof and lasted: PUL won and is now the best selling diaper cover in NZ and is taking the USA by storm!

What is PUL?

Our Real Nappies PUL diaper cover is actually a thin 100% polyester knit fabric laminated with only 2 mil of polyurethane film.

Please see the exact definition of PUL in Wikipedia:

‘Polyurethane laminate (PUL) is generally a polyester interlock knit fabric that has been laminated to a thin film of polyurethane. This laminated fabric is useful as a wind and/or water barrier in the construction of fluid-splash protecting garments, shower curtains, outerwear clothing, cloth nappies / diapers and cloth menstrual pads. It is very thin and breathable. It can be machine-washed and dried.
Polyurethane laminate was first developed for hospital equipment, where reusable waterproof fabrics were needed.’

Some more facts

We found some more great information from Celtic Cloth too:

- PUL, otherwise known as polyurethane laminated fabric, is a lot more technical than just a plastic backing on fabric.
-The original application is the medical field, and it is still used for this purpose.
-Like cloth diapers, it is used to replace disposable products with reusable.
-It provides the waterproof barrier needed in the medical field that can survive multiple institutional washings.
- The polyurethane laminate can be customized by the manufacturer and comes in different thicknesses. For cloth diapers, 1 mil or 2 mil is generally preferred.

-This allows for a good stretch, complete waterproofing, and is still comfortable enough to wear next to the skin.

What testing have you done to ensure it’s safety?

We are New Zealand’s number 1 reusable nappy company and have been in operation for over 7 years. Our diapers and covers are the only reusable diaper used in Hospitals and Day Care centres over in NZ and have to go through rigorous testing to get the approval for use in these facilities.

Every component of our nappies, covers and liners have also been tested for harmful substances by Armstrong Forensic Laboratory in Texas, USA.

So you see we are NZ’s #1 reusable diaper for a reason – our products are simply the best! Real Nappies Snug Wraps are the most economical and durable on the market, they are soft, snug and extremely waterproof. Teamed with our divinely soft 100% cotton prefold diapers and flushable, gentle diaper liners we are sure we will soon be your fave cloth diaper too!

Real Nappies Birth to Potty Pack are fast becoming one of our best selling items and no wonder! This pack contains all the diapers you will ever need for your little one at a ridiculously low price. PLUS with the 2 child guarantee what more could you want? Now come on we all have better things to do with our hard earned dollar then throwing your money away with disposable diapers. Come on, give it a go, you’ve got nothing to loose and everything to gain. Our thousands of happy customers can’t all be wrong…

One of our happy customers wrote a great review on Amazon, so good we thought you may like to read some of it, so we’ve put it into a list of reasons to use Real Nappies, for the full review check it out at Amazon!

1. Other uses for Real Nappies:

‘I ordered the birth to potty pack because this system had the best reviews. I went to pack away the newborn diapers, when I realized I can use the smaller diapers as a “catch pad”/bib for breastfeeding. I’m currently on the Infant size and I’m using the Crawlers and Toddler sizes as tummy-time drool mats, drool mats for naptime, lap pads, and as changing pad liners. The use as changing pad liner was an epiphany after reading so many bad reviews for changing pad systems that required special liners that ultimately end up rolling and bunching in the wash. I received some name-brand washable lap pads as a gift, and they were really small and only lasted two washes before falling apart because they’re just two pieces of felt glued together; what a waste! These Real Nappies have turned into so much more than just diapers, and this set really is everything you need to diaper your baby!’

2. Easy to clean:

‘I use Charlie’s Soap and Haven’t had any staining or odor issues yet.’

3. Know when your baby needs changing:

‘When you feel the diaper, there’s never any question if it’s wet, versus with disposables we’re always poking the diaper over and over again to figure out if that’s the reason baby’s crying.’

4. Nappy Rash? What’s that!

‘When my baby was sick and having diarrhea, we went 48 hours in disposables, and in that short amount of time he got diaper rash. When we switched back to the nappies, the rash went away. We’ve never had to use diaper cream (why add more chemicals to your baby’s life?).’

5. Excellent Quality.

‘These cloth diapers have far better workmanship than other prefolds out there. The sewing is tidier and doesn’t unravel. For the diaper covers, I love that the fabric is soft and there’s no exposed PUL (other companies have an exposed polyurethane liner, almost like pizza parlor tablecloth, and it tends to get sweatier).’

and another reviewer:
‘I have had the whole gamut of issues with previous diapers that I have tried, and these are far superior in function, at a fraction of the cost. Add to that a two child use guarantee out of your diapers and you really can’t go wrong.’

6. Slim Fit diapers.

‘I wanted a few extra inserts so I bought some prefolds and covers from other companies for comparison. I found that the Real Nappies are a little narrower in the crotch so baby’s legs can be closer together (how is baby supposed to crawl with a huge diaper in the way?) so I joke that they are European cut.’

7. Quicker Potty Training

‘People have told me the cloth diapers will make potty training easier because baby will know when the diaper is wet, versus with super absorbent diapers, babies tend to sit around in them for longer periods of time.’

8. Who needs Gussets?

‘I was initially concerned at the lack of leg gussets, but have been pleased and relieved to find that they function perfectly without them. I think perhaps with some of the thinner inserts out there, the leg gussets become more necessary. But, as these are meant to fit firmly against baby, that doesn’t pose a problem with these and I have not had leaking issues’

9. Save money too!

‘I never planned to “go green” but after trying these diapers, I can see how easy it is to make my household healthier by reducing the amount of chemicals and trying to choose greener products.

We thought you might find this customer feedback amusing – the example used by one of our valued customers for how dry our Boosters keep your baby made us chuckle and we wanted to share it with you:

Now I am using the Cloth Diaper booster pads correctly, the side that goes against Harry is so dry in the morning you could eat your breakfast off it! He is definitely not waking due to feeling wet now and I’m delighted to say our emergency pack of disposables for his current size is untouched and we’re about to move up a level.

Miranda

Thanks Miranda for your feedback – we very much appreciate the time it takes to send us feedback – good or bad.

Our Boosters make a fantastic doubler for night time use of Real Nappies Cloth Diapers. Obviously our Cloth Diapers are chemical free and use no gels, so we do suggest a little extra absorbency for night time. Once your little one starts sleeping through the night, we suggest popping one of our Boosters next to their skin on top of their existing Cloth Diaper.

If you have a heavy wetter or simply need extra back up for overnight cloth diapering, the Real Nappies Diaper Booster pad is for you. The contoured shape of the doubler adds a slim layer to your child’s cloth diaper but adds a maximum level of absorbency. The doubler is made from layers of premium, absorbent cotton sandwiched between a micro terry top layer and a micro fleece bottom layer.

Features:

The Real Nappies booster twin pack is the perfect addition to your night diapering routine and allows your child to sleep through the night leak free and comfortable.

The contoured shape of the doubler adds a slim layer to your child’s cloth diaper but adds a maximum level of absorbency.

I actively sell Real Nappies, sometimes I am in supermarkets and sometimes at expos. Some people come up to me and say they would never use anything else – they know the benefits of using cloth over disposables

I actively sell Real Nappies, sometimes I am in supermarkets and sometimes at expos. Some people come up to me and say they would never use anything else – they know the benefits of using cloth over disposables, but some people say things like “Oh no I wouldn’t be bothered with all the hassle,” or “I don’t want to have to wash pooey diapers.”

A mother and daughter passed by in a supermarket recently and the mother took one look at our diapers, saw the price and said to her pregnant daughter “Don’t look, just keep walking.” I asked why she had said this and she said “Look at the price of those compared to disposables.” I of course explained the fact that this would be a one time purchase compared to repeatedly buying disposables, but sadly my attempt at an explanation fell on deaf ears.

So some people already assume that for one reason or another cloth diapers are more hassle than disposables. Let me address each reason why people might think they are and explain why I think they aren’t and you can decide for yourself.

The main reason is washing, yes you do have to wash cloth diapers, that’s how you use them again. At Real Nappies we design our best selling pack – The Birth to Potty Pack so that you only have to was your diapers once every third day – we give you enough diapers to last that long. It only takes a few minutes to put on a wash, so not too much hassle!

Perhaps people don’t like the thought of handling a soiled diaper, well if you use one of our diaper liners the solids can be flushed straight down the toilet, so you handle the edges of the liner, not the poo!

Some people, like the lady I mentioned earlier might even think cloth diapers are more expensive than disposables, perhaps initially they are but they need to do the sums!

Well, hopefully I’ve put to rest the main couple of reasons why people wouldn’t use cloth diapers, now if I may, let me explain a few more benefits of cloth diapering.

When you change your child’s diaper the solids need to go somewhere. Why not flush them down the toilet to get rid of them? A dirty disposable would be put in your dustbin. Now I know from experience (before I became educated) that after a few days of putting dirty diapers in your trash the smell is absolutely nauseating, not to mention what’s it’s like after a whole week.

As we all know the cost savings are huge – you will literally save thousands of dollars if you use cloth compared to disposables, and with the Real Nappies 2 Child Guarantee you won’t have to buy any nappies at all your second time round so the savings are even greater then.

The health reasons – there are no gels or chemicals in our diapers so there is no chance of burns, far far less chance of diaper rash and no heat build up as all the materials we use are breathable.

Of course the impact on the environment is much less – nothing goes to landfill, so we’re not waiting 500 years for cloth diapers to decompose.

Well back to the original question – Are Cloth Diapers Any More Hassle Than Disposables? If you call spending an extra few minutes every few days more hassle then I guess the answer to that question is yes. But just look at the positives. In my mind that extra few minutes is well worth it!

As oil continues to gush from the exploded Deepwater Horizon oil rig, a Texas Tech expert in nonwoven cotton technology believes that cotton may do a better job to absorb the oil spill than the booms made of synthetic material.

“Already, several million feet of the oil-containment booms have been used to capture the oil spilling into the Gulf,” said Seshadri Ramkumar, associate professor of Nonwoven materials at The Institute of Environmental and Human Health (TIEHH). “They are made of synthetic materials, don’t biodegrade and absorb only a third of what raw cotton can do. The properties of raw cotton allow it to soak up 40 times its weight. With chemical modifications, it can soak up to as much as 70 times its weight. And it won’t just stay in a landfill forever.”

Well what more can we say GO COTTON!! Absorbent enough for your baby’s diaper and the Gulf Oil Spill! LOL!

Why risk it?

It was of great interest to me to read the recently printed article in the Wall Street Journal:
‘ Procter & Gamble Co. is scrambling to put out an Internet wildfire over the safety of its new Pampers diapers, a crucial brand that accounts for about 11% of the company’s revenue. Some mothers who blame the reengineered diapers for causing rashes, even “chemical burns,” have started a Facebook page to detail their claims and press P&G to reverse course. The claims quickly gained traction, leading this month to a lawsuit and inquiries by product-safety regulators in the U.S. and Canada.*’

Why risk it?

Of course P&G are strongly defending themselves and their products, but groundswell points to a potential problem. So why even entertain the notion and take the risk?

Our friends at ‘Dirty Diaper Laundry’ also quoted:

‘On the Facebook group, consisting of 728 members, she discovered many, many moms complaining of the same burn like rash. All of the rashes began after using the new Cruisers with Dry Max.

I think Pampers users would be pleasantly surprised at how absorbent, easy and comfortable cloth diapers are.’

Convenience = Chemicals?

Chemicals are introduced to everything nowadays to preserve the shelf life of products or to increase the convenience, yet what is the long term effect of this so called ‘convenience’, there must be consequences. How long till we know the extent of these consequences and of being dubbed a throwaway generation?
Irrespective of what you as a parent believe, and I certainly am no expert on the subject, but as a parent myself commonsense suggests that there is a problem from exposing baby’s delicate, sensitive skin to chemicals unnecessarily.

The Natural Solution

So why not avoid the chemical burn question entirely by using cotton cloth diapers with no chemicals. That’s why we make Real Nappies cloth diapers which have no chemicals and are sooo easy to use! Real Nappies cloth diapers use 100% natural, breathable, soft cotton next to your babies’ skin. That means no risk of chemical burns with Real Nappies cloth diapers. They are simple and easy to use, save you $$$ and are better for the environment too! Not only that but with our 2 child guarantee you can ensure you keep your next little one chemical free too!
It’s not rocket science, it just makes sense, naturally.
