Birth Announcement, Sort Of.

We all have a past and sometimes that past can sneak up on you when you least expect it.
Well, that was what happened on Friday, July 19th at 2:42 pm.

Got a phone call from Halee saying she just received a call from Josh... who is Josh you are wondering?

Josh is a young man that I blessed an amazing family with through adoption. Now 27 years later he is reaching out to get to know and be a part of our crazy and amazing family.

Let me help you get up to this point.

I got pregnant after having Halee (don't judge) and knew I couldn't be a single mom of 2 and give them both a life they needed. I had to go the adoption route, but the agencies I talked to just didn't fit or promised things I was not ok with. One day an older friend of mine who went to a baby shower of another friend of mine that I nannied for was in tune enough to make this all happen.

Mary was sitting next to a woman that was telling a story about her brother who just put in the paperwork to adopt another child, they had adopted 3 already but there was a pull for another. Mary got their information for me and called me as soon as she got home, as this was before everyone had cellphones.

I reached out to this couple and listened to their story of why they felt the need to adopt again. They told me about a dream they both had had about a blond-haired (Scandinavian) boy and saw him as part of there family. Now, mind you, I had not said anything about myself or that I was having a boy.
I listened, and finally, after hearing them describe the story and who they were I felt a calmness and I could finally breathe again even at 32 weeks along. I told them I was having a boy and my dad side is all from Sweden and that the father of this baby was also of Scandinavian descent, most likely this boy would have blondish hair, at least when he was younger.

Within a week I was on a plane from Boston heading to San Diego (see what is happening here...)
I left Halee with my Lasell College crew as I was still attending (sort of ) school. They all helped with Halee the 2 weeks I was gone waiting to deliver. Thank you to all that supported me at Lasell and Karen, my best friend since 7th grade and didn't judge me for my situation.

I stayed with friends of the adoptive family, the dad was actually was my doctor that delivered Josh. Each day I would go spend time with the family that was going to adopt this child. I got to know them and their extended family and friends which just confirmed the decision I was making was the right one.

I won't get into the details of it all but I delivered Josh and spent 2 days with him in the hospital and was on a plane 5 days after delivery back to Boston.

We had a semi-open adoption. I got letters and Christmas cards every year and we sent gifts for a few years, but I stepped back as he got older not to confuse a young boy.

My 4 kids knew of Josh early on and accepted the boundaries of not reaching out until Josh did.

Well, that brings us to how this last week has gone.

Brock did the 23 & Me DNA/Health test a few months back just out of curiosity of family history and health markers. He received it back and it came up with cousins, which we knew about, but it also had Josh listed as a half brother, not shocking, but both doing the same test was interesting.

Josh told us that he checks his 23&Me account each quarter and this time there was a major change on it for him... Brock. Josh thought I only had 3 girls, so this was news to him. Also, he didn't know my last name as Peterson. So after he stalked Brocks social media he realized who I was and that we were all in San Diego after being in NH for 20 years.

So, the phone call Halee got on that Friday was shocking and exciting. She called me to let me know Josh would be calling in 30 min so prepare myself. Really, how does someone like me with all my anxiety prepare? 30 minutes on the dot I got the call. Such an easy and natural call we had. One hour and 22 minutes later and dinner date that Sunday with the Hines Crew happened.

Sunday dinner was amazing and lasted for 5 hours. My mom had sent a large binder to me 3 months ago of all Josh's pictures, forms, and everything relating to the adoption because I had been asking her to cleanout. This was totally a God thing as we all went through that information that Sunday amazed at the information that was in there and how it all came to be.

Some other crazy connections:

My 2 grandkids (Halee's) were born in the same hospital I delivered Josh 27 years ago.
Josh would go to lunch often at the restaurant Abby worked for 5 years
Halee lived in the same area as Josh's family after she was married
Halee and Abby both nannied for a woman who's friend had also blessed this family with a baby girl
We moved from NH to San Diego not ever thinking we would meet Josh.
Josh's friend at college is my mothers best friends son in Massachusetts

The kids are all texting, meeting up, and planning things. I know God really does have his time and we know that this was the right time for this to take place. Excited for what the future holds and know that I made the right decision for myself by letting this child grow up in a family that gave him great opportunities that I could not at the time, and allowing Halee and I to find Kurt and create the awesome family we did.

New England Strong

On our way to work this morning, the sun was coming over the mountains to the east, the sky looked like cotton candy and was just amazing. Every day it is more beautiful than the next.

Kurt and I drive to work 4 days a week to save money on gas seeing his truck gets a whopping 13 miles to the gallon, but it is a great & comfy truck. We are always in awe of the sunrises and sunsets as we drive to and from work. This is a beautiful area. We work out in the "desert" and live 8 miles from the Pacific Ocean so we see and feel a lot of different things. The temperature is about a 12 to 15-degree difference from the desert to the coast. With winter coming I have to learn to dress in layers, sweater in the morning short sleeve by noon and sweater again by 6pm.

Lately, I have been getting up thinking there will be frost and possibly snow on the ground when we leave the house in the morning. I read posts from my friends on the east coast and see them freezing and complaining. I get it. Winter in New England runs about 5 months. Fall is about 4 weeks. Spring about 2 months with many black flies and mosquitoes. Summer 3 months if you are lucky with high humidity and more mosquitoes. The missing month here is a cluster of all season, you could have a 60-degree day in December and a 50-degree day in the summer.

As a former homeowner with no garage and living up a steep driveway made me legit crazy from the end of Oct to mid-April. Ice dams, roof raking, sanding the driveway to hopefully make it up and I if didn't I would park at the bottom and hike up the icy torturous hill with all my bags and kids. The snow blowing of the driveway, the path to the generator for when we lost power (because we did 3 or 4 times a winter), having to budget for gas for the generator/snowblower and oil for heat which is super expensive when you have 2 oil tanks in your house to heat your rental property and they might have the heat cranked as we were freezing and bundled up, going out to get the snow and ice off your cars, heating them up before getting in for your 20 min ride and not wanting to sit back due to how cold your clothes are and not wanting them touching your skin. Oh, and your cute outfits are now ruined with clunky boots that have salt stains from the ice melt, a massive sweater to cover your original outfit cause it gets so damn cold out that you can barely feel the heat. Old lady hands, when your hands get so freak'n cold that your skin on your hands become unrecognizable and like and 80-year-old person. My hair was always super staticky because of how dry it got inside because of the heat that was cranking and my contacts were like sandpaper.

Think you get the idea of how miserable it can be or at least for me.

Those of you who love the winter are the few who don't own a home on a hill, have the cash for someone to snowplow the driveway, enjoy stacking wood, lugging it into your home and stoking the fire to keep the house bearable, like dressing in heavy layers, and chipping the ice and snow off your car.

Yes, thoes are our cars under the snow and no snowblower that storm.

Now being part of the southern California culture I realize how strong and mentally strong people from New England are.

People we run into here say they love the snow... really?! Have you been out of power for 10 days because of the ice and snow? Had to roof rake? Many have no clue what that is and when you explain it to them they are still baffled by it. Have you ever had a sporting event outside that was 25 degrees as your kids are running around the field and you are slowly getting frost bite?

Oh, no? You go to Big Bear and Mammoth Mountain where you ski and have fun for the weekend and then you can escape the snow in just 2 hours and be back in your shorts and flip flops. That is not winter. Yes, super pretty and fun but no, not real.

I watch people here when it rains. You would think the end of the world is coming. People drive like there is a foot of snow on the roads, news alerts all day, and all conversations revolve around how they got to their car or stores in the rain. Rain in New England is typical and expected. No problem. And when it does snow back east people drive like the pavement is dry, 65mph is a whiteout is normal.

I am glad I grew up in New England and could experience all the seasons. I am glad I learned how to be strong in wild weather and learn how to survive with a lot of hard work. Many tears and pulled muscles living in that environment. Glad my kids got to experience this too and have made them tough and now value the 330 days of sunshine.

With all that said, I am slowly becoming acclimated to this SoCal life. I am typing this as my heater is on under my desk and it is 70 degrees out. My arches are falling due to my daily wear of flip flops. I get bothered when it is cloudy out. Things are pricier out here but to me my mental state is worth the extra $$$. I do still get anxiety when I see the weather posts from the east coast but have to remind myself I am living in one of the best places in the USA, just wish I could have taken some of you with us here and our New England sport teams. ( Yes, Kurt I said it I like the Patriots)

BEACH ETIQUETTE 101

PSA: Please review beach etiquette before heading out this summer.

1. Wind direction and how the sand will fly

2. How you conduct yourself with the people around you.

3. Music, be aware of the offensive lyrics and the families sitting within earshot.

4. Food, don't feed the seagulls cause I don't want a swarm of flying rats near me.

5. I will overhear your conversations when you are talking about the parties and hook-ups from the night before and will judge you accordingly

6. If you run past others kicking up sand and are not under the age of 12, be prepared for a wrath of stares or possible unfiltered comments

7. Smoking, gross. Doing this at the beach makes it doubly gross. Watch the wind direction of your nasty smell and remember you are going to ruin your lungs.

8. Trash, pick up after yourselves and do something above and beyond and pick up any that you see on the way to the trash.

9. Peeing in the water, go at least waist deep. And try not to be totally obvious.

10. Parking, space is limited don't be a douche and take up 2 spots.

Too Much "Stuff"

One of my greatest fears and that causes me so much anxiety is the call that something has happened to my parents. Now, I am not panicked about losing them because I have a strong belief in the eternal plan and that we will be together again.

My fear is the "stuff".

With living in California it isn't like I can just help the process now as they live 3500 miles from us. I know there is a lot of family history that goes way back with furniture, glass wear, art work, tools, and shelves and shelves of books of family genealogy. When I go home to visit I feel overwhelmed and have to cut my visits short because I can see my future of cleaning out and not being able to let go of items because I know the stories behind the "stuff".

I had a very difficult time cleaning out my own house when we moved from NH to CA. I cried over a Sharpie, yes a black everyday Sharpie. As time went on I got in the groove and dropped off my "stuff" at Goodwill over 13 car loads and 15 carloads to the dump. I met people in parking lots all over southern NH selling the valuable items.

I know my parents have items that are worth way more than I ever had. I can't just donate or throw away majority of it. Many of our dinners growing up we would go over pictures on the wall of who was who and also stories of the art and furniture that family members had created. They were ingrained in me. At the time I didn't really have an interest, but as I am older I would like to have the space to keep it all, but that is not an option. So this is what keeps me up or wakes me up.

I have asked my parents to start the process on their own. I don't think it is happening, but in my mind it is. I am heading back East for a few days in April and will have 2 full days to figure out a plan with them. I will be returning in July and hoping that my plan will have been implemented.

I get it, these items are a part of you. Stories, history, and memories. I tear up thinking about it but our cleaning out process and the thought of my next one in years makes me realize how much stuff that takes up our daily lives. I have never felt so free of the crap I had. I have been to Target maybe 5 times since we moved here, I just can't think about shopping and getting more and having to go through another clean out. We still have kitchen and bathroom cabinets that are empty and I don't feel like I have to fill them.

Take a look around your homes and see all the unnecessary stuff you have and items you have no real connection too. I am not saying clean out all your shizz but take a look at what items are most important. I also understand some people enjoy having a magazine picture homes with beautiful things that people oh and ah over and that is great, but I am so over trying to impress. I have all I could want and need and that feeling is way better then a shopping spree at Ikea and Target combine (shocking I know, but the truth)

It has finally taken me 45 years to figure this out and thousands and thousands of wasted dollars.

I am just hoping that my parents can see the benefits of starting now for their financial gain and my mental well being.

Just a website I found that has some great options for aging parents. I will not have to have property to make this happen, but I know my brother and my favorite sister in law have space...

Rocks and Stuff

I look back on the past six months and realize how fast life is moving! We left NH on July 27th and arrived in CA Aug 1st just in time to move into our new condo 8 miles from the boarder of Mexico. While I was very apprehensive about our location I have been so impressed with where we live. I love the friendliness of the people and have a glimpse what it is like to be a minority. We are close to everything we could ever need or want. Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Rite Aid (personal favorite), and so many restaurants are within 1/4 of us.
Oh, and Costco is 3 blocks west.

I feel like life is much easier for us here. We are renting and we do not have to take care of the upkeep of the condo but we have been given permission to revamp the back "yard". Kurt likes simplicity. Off we went to rent a chain saw (we sold all of our yard tools and power tools), tore out the old dying palm trees, scrubby plants that I have no clue of what they are, and trim up the healthy mini palms. Yard/concrete slab is almost done.

While walking at well known beach we were amazed at the millions of different color rocks. Every one was more beautiful than the other. I could see it in Kurt's eyes the thought process of how were we going to get all these beautiful rocks to our home. When we got home he tried showing me his vision as we stood in the patio area. I can not visualize things I have to see a pictures.
We were out adventuring trying to find new places in our area and came across the Chula Vista Yacht Club (yes, kinda an oxymoron from what they say around here, sort of like Manchester NH Yacht Club) and went to the beach and saw similar rocks. Great, closer to home. Now Kurt could his plan into action. As I was at work and he was on school break he put the buckets in the truck and went for it, what he says, moved God's rocks to our location. After I started to see the transition, I realized this would be great, but he wanted to hit the beach up north that will remain nameless. Mind you that this is a major tourist attraction area. How were we going to get buckets off the beach? No worries, people thought we were working for UCSD in the geology department and needed the rocks. Classic. After 4 trips to unnamed beach and 4 to Chula we are just about done.

More about the rocks... they dried and were meh looking. After having dinner with friends we went to their home on Balboa Island and walked around and saw some beautiful shiny rocks.
What? How? Then a light bulb went off in my mind, SHELLAC! Kurt could wait to get to Home Depot. We had to dodge a few Mexicans driving into HD looking for work. Where were these guys when I was hauling buckets of rocks up the beach to the truck. Note to self, I am sure we will have another project soon to hire them.

Got home and with in minutes Kurt was as high as a kite from the fumes of the spray cans of shellac he was popping off.

So that is some of the fun we have been having in SoCal. We are loving the winters again, but kinda bummed that New England didn't get hammered with snow like last year as it would have taken the sting out of moving a bit better.

I miss my friends dearly and being able to hop in the car and head to Chatham and RI, also knowing my way around so I don't end up in Tijuana, but in time we will find a support system. We did find a new church and hoping that is a start to finding people, but not sure they will get our sick and twisted New England humor.

No Perfect Parent or Child...

Having kids comes with great rewards and also with some great heartache!

Think back to when you were a teen, you did so much behind your parents back and were not forthcoming with all the details when asked. With that said I don't know and don't want to know all that my kids are/were doing and feel that some of their choices to do crazy assed things makes them who they are because of the consequences of their actions. (love my kids even w the faults they may have)

Are we responsible for what happens if a child sneaks out of the house while we am sleeping? Are we held accountable for what happens at a party at our own house while we are away when we forbid them to have anyone at our home? Do we get looked down on if our kid is doing illegal things and we don't know about it and others do? How do others view our parenting if we are unaware of the "secret" life our children might be living. So many teens live a double life, one at home (that looks like they have their shiz together), and one out with friends that is nothing like what we have taught them within our 4 walls.

I feel that we as parents need to support each other and not point fingers and judge. It is hard to parent (no book can prepare you for what it is like to raise kids or how to handle every situation), and each child is so different from the others. I struggle everyday wondering what I could have done better, could I have been around more, what if we could of provided more financially, should I have disciplined more or less, should we have done this or that. Totally unnecessary I know, as we did the best we knew how.

Because of some of our kid's actions, a few have judged us and needed a place to lay blame for the influence they may have had on their kids. Funny thing though, we all might realize that maybe it is our own kids that chose to participate at their own accords.

I guess what I am saying is that we as parents don't have a whole lot of control on certain situations in the teen years and if my kids were involved in a situation that causes others to judge or point fingers maybe it isn't always the way it looks. There are always 2 sides. And by no means are we claiming that our kids are perfect, we are SO incredibly proud of who they are becoming in the midst of the challenges they are facing each day, and thank God for them each day.

Reality Sets In

We are into month 3 of living in sunny, warm and busy California. The newness is wearing off and finally figuring out our way on the intertwining highways, our best priced place for gas and parking locations at the beaches.

With life calming down and normalcy coming back into our lives we are seeing the challenges we are faced with. Like we would anywhere new.

Sophia has been a trooper as far as leaving Goffstown High School her senior year, leaving behind friends that she has known since first grade. Exciting at first, but now we realize the community we were involved with in New Hampshire was amazing. Soph goes to a small, I mean small private Christian school where her senior class has 78 students that all have gone through this district together. That is rough for teens that are new to the school.

I don't care if you are Christian, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, or have no belief in anything, treat people the way you would want to be treated. If you see someone struggling or can see into there eyes that there is something not right, lend and ear or even a smile. A sincere smile is so powerful. Standing up in a group when that group is being catty and mean, do you have what it takes?

Even adults struggle in this type of situation as well. I am working for a conservative Christian college. If you know me well, I have a hard time filtering and boarder line inappropriate, ok maybe I cross that line at times too. I am having a hard time fitting in and know the pain of being accepted for who I really am or having a friend in a working environment like I have had in the past.

Yes, I miss my friends more that I can convey in this Blog, I know we will find a group of fiends like I had back east. I have been hesitant to get myself out there to meet people for fear of them not really getting my sarcasm or my unfiltered thoughts.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE being close to my girls and Cruzer. We have seen them more now them we ever would have back east. This is why we are here.

The weather too... AMAZING. I see the pictures of New England and the breath taking fall foliage and the apple orchards and pumpkin patches. But I know what is coming. From mid Nov to mid April you all are suffering and paying for wood and oil to stay warm. Last winter put me over the edge and also our budget with plowing, oil, and gas for the generator when the power was out. I know I will love San Diego even more in February.

I just put Abby and Sophia on a plane back East to recharge in hopes they see the blessing they have here with family and the amazing weather (thus being said before El Nino gets here). We are planning on visiting in July, so get your guest rooms ready (Dave Murdoch, get on our "shed" in the back corner.) Hunker down for the winter and I get it if you "unfriend" us during your New England winter.

Prayer...

Do you believe in prayer, do you pray often, do you consider prayer similar to meditation? Do you feel weak if you pray, do you pray publicly or keep it private?
This has always been a struggle of mine. I am married to someone who survives on morning, midday, nightly and anytime prayer, hence why I stick close to him.

As you know we moved from New Hampshire, the second most spiritual dark state in the US, next to Vermont. I grew up with many religions in my life from Methodist, Lutheran, Judaism, Catholicism, Mormonism, and non-denominational Christianity. We have always had morning and night prayers with our family. Friends that came over were included as well if they wanted to, many did to see what this was all about. This is not a knock on any religion or beliefs, lets get that out there!

I have been thinking, when people and yourself say to others that are struggling or have need "I will pray for you" do you do it, or do you say it because you think you should and it is easy to say?

Kurt, Sophia, and I are totally involved in the Christian culture here. Kurt works for the Christian Unified School district, Sophia goes to that school and I work across the street at a Christian College. To say it is a culture shock is an understatement for me at least.

We have prayer in the mornings with our coworkers and Sophia with her classmates. We all discuss who needs prayers and how we can include them in our thoughts. I must look like a fish out of water in these times. Don't get me wrong, it is great, but I am a private person in this aspect. My life is usually an open book but when it comes to my spirituality it is mine and mine alone. Maybe because of past situations and being questioned or removed from what I thought I should have believed. Anyways, this is just a different environment then anything I have been involved in and probably most of you as well.

So back to my original question, do you really pray for someone when you say you will or post on social media that you will? I just hear this a lot now a days and wonder if they really mean it and if they really are doing it.

I know in our home we do pray for many of you daily. Sometimes I have to cough or fidget a bit to have Kurt cut the prayer down a bit with all the names he is busting out with. Totally disrespectful I know. Just know that when we say we will pray for you we do and I hope you do too.

Just random thoughts today...

Adjusting...

So we arrived in San Diego Aug 1st. We had only seen our condo online and only had 8 pictures to view. Needless to say this was like Christmas morning to adults when we opened the front door.

We GPS'd the location of our new place. As we pulled in we were greeted by a garage, we never had a garage in NH. All those winters, brutal ice storm, blizzards, hurricanes and just unpredictable weather and no protection for our vehicles. This was just the beginning.
We opened the front door, bamboo flooring, high ceilings, granite counters, stainless appliances, plantation shutters, and so much more.

A fire place, never had that in NH. Three bathrooms, what? We had a family of 6 in a home that had 1.5 bathrooms for 18 years in NH, life would have been a bit easier with more bathrooms. Now we have 3 living here so we have choices. Because we went to Goodwill 13 times and the dump 15, sold stuff on social media we down sized so much we have plenty of space. It is so freeing!

We knew this was the place for as Sophia welled up with tears saying she loved it. Phew.
As you know moving a child across country is tough, but her senior year is almost considered child abuse. Mind you she has been a trooper with the transition. A new school. A Christian school. Uniforms. A senior class size of 80 from 360 in NH. Friends... That is the toughest, but at least she has her sisters and Kurt and I. Sometimes even "Christian" girls can be just as mean as regular girls. A bit too judgy .

We are in a great location! 25 minutes from the beaches, downtown SD, and from Halee, Tyler Abby, and Cruzer. We are 8 miles from Mexico, just to give you an idea of our location.
Kurt is starting to gel with the coaching staff and the players, but that is not a shocker. He can make friends in any situation. He is teaching 4th grade a new curriculum with a class size if 22.

After about 3 weeks being in California I finally was offered a job. It is across the street from the high school where Sophia and Kurt are. We drive together some days to help with the gas budget. I now get excited when I see gas for $3.25 that price causes lines at the pumps. Crazy!

When we talked about moving to California people were pretty negative about it telling us how expensive it is. Yes, they were right but we will not be paying $700 month for oil, $$ gas for the generator during power outages, over $1000 on driveway plowing, warm wardrobe, and all that goes with owning a home. Yes, there is tax on everything. Yes, the traffic can be maddening. Yes, the 2nd language is English in the USA. But we love it. The weather is amazing, the people are friendly, there is so much to do, people are happier, and I know we will all make this our "home" in time.

Let's try this again. Just spent 40 min on this blog and deleted it by accident. BTW it was amazing.
On the road again... Sing it like Willie Nelson.
We left Longmont CO at 9 am and headed for the most beautiful rides in America. After getting on I-70W we climbed up mountains, through mountains and cruised down them with amazing vie
ws at each turn. Each turn was more beautiful then the last. It still amazes me how there highways were built and the tunnels that go right through the rocks.

We made our way up into Vail, some part of this climb was over 10000 feet above sea level. We pulled into Vail to have lunch and let the girls fill up on gallons of water to help relieve their headaches caused by the altitude and to pee. (Someone has a bladder the size of a squirrel, but I will not embarrass him). Vail is so pretty. The town area has great shops, restraurants, hotels and condos. So many mountain bikers. We had lunch outside watching the bikers make their way down the mountain in a cloud of dust. The homes in this area were beautiful, but I don't know where they teach to enable them these million dollar places, we must find out.

Hopped back in the cars switched drivers and moved on. Abby ended up driving again as Sophia was freaked out by the heights and no guard rails . We cruved around, climbed, and glided down massive steeps. Cars, trucks, and RV's started to litter the breakdown lanes. This was a tough ride for a new car let alone a older vehicle. We were climbing a pretty brutal grade when we came across a car pulling a small Uhaul and about 20 Yards from it was a couple walking with their cat in a carrier. Now we are about 100 miles out and no services for about that long, there was no way I could leave them. I always make fun of Kurt for helping people on the side of the road, but something inside me made me stop.

This couple was from Wisconsin, my dad is from there and felt a connection when I saw their plate. Their little V6 couldn't handle the pulling and grades it had to climb towing something. We offered to pull their Uhaul to Cedar City 3.5 hours away. Now Kurts truck is a V8 and is a beast, but I saw Kurts eyes get a bit glazed over when I offered to hook them up and go. This truck is Kurts "baby" and has never towed anything even though we have the tow package. After hooking up, making room in our truck, and giving the girls the cat in their car we were off again. (Had to leave their car behind) * Side note, the rest area we stopped in to do the switch there was an Audi from NH that was being put on a flatbed due to blown the cooling tube. The young woman and her 2 dogs were from Hudson NH, she had AAA so she was all set and we had no room anyways.

Having total strangers in your vehical for almost 4 hours you get to know a lot about how others live and their lives. Wow! I know we were meant to pick them up, not only to help them but to help us in realizing how blessed we are.

We had a goal to make it to Vegas but towing a Uhaul we had to drive 30 mph under the 80mph posted. We got this couple to their destination but we couldn't continue the 2.5 hours onward. We were spent and the critters were out and I didn't feel like dodging roadkill or seeing glowing eyes in my lane.

We found a hotel... Abbey Inn, totally had to stay there. Oh, and it was next to IHOP . 11:45 we finally had dinner. Back to the Inn and the girls were out in minutes, as for Kurt and I, we were up all night, thanks Rockstar energy drinks and adderall.

We have 7 hours today till we are in San Diego. We will get to see our new townhouse which we have only seen 7 pictures of on line. We are excited and nervous but ready for this new life.

Today started with an amazing home cooked breakfast at "Hotel Benjaminson". Being in Colorado with my Aunt Janet and Uncle Bob was more of a blessing than we could have ever realized... And here's why (Top 10 Style)

Beginning with, and in no particular order...

#10. Being on the road for an of 10+ a day is TOUGH (physically and mentally)
#9. We needed a mental break from seeing corn (who knew how much corn our farms had?)
#8. We needed a mental break from seeing cows
#7. We needed a mental break from driving by 18 wheelers
#6. We NEEDED to wash Kurt's truck (literally killed 1,000's of innocent bugs)
#5. Janet and Bob are the GREATEST hosts
#4. The meals we eat while with family are ALWAYS better than anything else
#3. We went on a beautiful hike up Flat Iron Mountain (Part of the Rockies)
#2. We weren't driving
AND THE #1. Blessing of stopping in CO... Spending time with FAMILY!

Oh, so why the "Keep Your Head On A Swivel"/football reference?

While coming down Flat Iron, I had mentioned to Kurt that walking DOWN a mountain is the perfect metaphor for life: you need to watch your step (looking down from time to time for safety), but it's also just as important to keep your head up, to look ahead, and to ENJOY THE BEAUTY all around! Life moves fast, and we need to see, do, and BE all we can be (while helping others along the way as well)!

All that being said, we're all feeling rested, and excited to hit the road in the morning!

More Cows, Corn, and Trucks

Up and out early. We hit the road 80W. Now I prepared myself as my dad had taught me to check the weather. Holy crap, red and yellow cells on the radar. I am not one that likes storms in a safe location and here we were going into the flattest post of the US known to many as Tornado Alley.

Abby and I were in my Camry because I need to make sure the car was still running correctly and no funky clanks or clunks. We hit the storms after the first 15 min. You can see the storms coming from miles away due to how flat it is out there in Iowa and Nebraska. At 8:30 am the skies became black, like legit black. Abby was my photographer, so photo creds to her! The first drop of rain hit like a droplets the size of a baseball. The wind picked up and Abby asked what do we do if we see a tornado? I had no answer which didn't make us feel o comfortable as we saw a few swirls of the sky.

After about an hour of crazy weather we saw the light. My hands were cramped due to the white knuckling I had to do.

We finally made it to Nebraska, who knew they had major cities. We cruised through Omaha and Lincoln, yah that was it. Back to corn fields and cows. We stopped at at truck stop somewhere in Nebraska and things got a bit tense.

Just say NO to drugs people! We watched this young woman stumbling around the store and then the parking area. She was bruised, cut up, bikini top, frazzled hair and just brutal looking, very sad... I said to Abby to be aware of her surroundings and in just a short few seconds things went down. Kurt and Sophia just gassed up the truck and were waiting for Abby to hop back in my car. This girl was getting closer to Kurts truck when Abby flew out of her seat because this girl was trying to open Sophia's door to get in. Abby pushed the young woman and yelled at her. This girl was clearly stung out and she said she thought it was her boyfriends truck... I think, not unless Kurt was her new "friend". Talk about seeing one of your kids act in a way that she was the protector made me proud, but also made me nervous as this person could have retaliated. Abby did say she had soft skin... Pass the anti-bacterial!

Our goal for Tuesday was to make it to Longmont, CO. This is where my aunt and uncle live. We needed a break from driving so we planned on staying for a bit and hike around the Boulder area. Nebraska to Colorado was brutal. Kurt was getting snippy and couldn't wait to get out of the truck.

The girls were doing well, we would check our rear view mirror and see them singing away, laughing and arms out the sunroof. It is tough to see your precious cargo driving and trying to keep everyone safe. But we made it to Longmont to a home cooked meal! AWESOME

Construction, Corn and Cows

Spent the night in Hubbard Ohio. Sleeping in a double bed after having a king sized bed makes for a tough sleep (first world probs). Kurt was all jacked up on Rockstar energy drinks and thought if he was up at 3:30am that we all should be. He was like a child waiting for his parents to get up. He left for the gym at the hotel like 4am. Think he did more Snapchatting then working out.

Finally we hit the road. Most of Ohio is under road construction and full of State Troopers. Looking at the landscape much of the eastern part of Ohio is like NH. The western part is not at all like NH. Corn, farms, and flat land. We could see the storms brewing in the distance quick was beautiful yet a bit unnerving.

We final got to Iowa and wanted to stay in a populate area so we hit Des Moines. It was like a ghost town. No traffic, no one on the streets, and nothing happening. Found a hotel with a pool at the request of the girls. Got settled in and ordered dinner.

I understand each region or state at that matter has different ways of preparing food. We chose Chinese, can't be to off on that right? So so so wrong. First the delivery guy was beyond high, similar to Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. We gave him a cash tip and he panicked and asked us to call back the restaurant to let them know we were paying in cash. OK, I did, but that was a first. The girls go got back from the pool and we opened the boxes of food. Um, what is that... I have never seen creations of this sort. Not sure the restaurant knows what wanton papers are as our crab ragoons were made like an apple turnover. So brutal. Oh an fried rice, no burned rice with a random pea or onion.

Total fail.

We decided to just count on breakfast and called it a day.

2nd and 9 (Football reference)

Day 2 and nine states to go.
Left Bedford at 11 am after getting some spiritual nourishment and losing most of our water weight from our tears saying goodbye to our son Brock. We bought "flat" Brock with us on our trip. He has been pretty quiet, and great for photo shoots. Always smiling...

Kurt and Sophia had the first leg. What was I thinking going on the Mass Pike on a Sunday or any day at that matter. Slow and steady with all the D-bag drivers from NY and NJ. Not sure why they think they don't need to follow the rules. If you are from these locations and you are offended from my observations then you might be one of the drivers I am referring to.

At the most random times I would just sob and poor Kurt would look helplessly at me hoping it would pass quickly.   I think he could have whiplash from the emotional changes I would go though in just a few short miles.

Having our girls following us in my car was another stress. Making sure we stayed together, had to watch our speed, communicating to what our plan was makes it a bit challenging, mostly when I jack on the blinker to find food.

Found a great diner in NY by Marist College. Great lunch/dinner. The waitress asked us why we are moving to a state that was a financial mess. Our response... It doesn't snow. I think she got it.

Abby and I did the 2nd leg, six hours.
So many beautiful sites and we are taking in the greens, rivers, lakes, and rolling hills. The sunset last night was beautiful. We had light until about 9 pm.

Driving highways at dusk and dark is so sketchy. We had see so many deer and critters that had been squished by cars and trucks. We should of played Roadkill Bingo, I would of totally won for sure. Poor furry friends.

Not knowing the area and the poorly lit roads made for a tough ride. I think every 18 wheeler was on the road and I seemed to always pass it them on corners. Total white knuckling. Oh ya the fog. Did I mention the fog? Yikes. I was waiting for a deer to be kicking it in the roadway in all the fog banks we crossed.

I have this thing I do where I have a contest in my mind. My challenge from last night was to make it to Ohio on day one. We were 25 miles from Ohio and was losing my vision due to contacts that felt like potato chips in my eyes, but had to push on. The girls called to say they had to pee, but I refused to stop because of that goal I had. So they might have UTI's but I completed my goal.   We can see the Pennsylvania and Ohio state lines from our hotel, but I win in my mind.

So we had a 1-3 year plan to move to California to be with our 2 girls, son-in-law and new grandson.

We came home from February vacation in San Diego and with in 5 weeks Kurt had already landed a job at an elementary school teaching 4th grade and coaching high school football at a small Christian school (350 students). How everything has fallen into place we know we are on the right path.

I have applied for over 33 jobs, but realize the issues with trying to find a job for me from across the country. I am not going to panic till mid August.

Selling a home is quite a task. We did have 3 offers on our place in 36 hours. We have been getting the house ready for a family that we hope will make great memories like our family of 6 did. The memories we have had in our 1700 sqft home would have filled a 20,000 sqft home.

We have lived in this home for 18 years and the amount of things we have done to this property has been a great feat. We learned to install hardwood flooring, dig sump pump hole, install gutters, use a chain saw, build stone walls, paint, repair walls (thanks Brock), and build a huge composite deck.

This home was a great place for us! Now looking to leave the snow and owning a home has lead us to a new location.

We will be living southeast of San Diego in Chula Vista. This is 25 min from Kurt and Sophia's school. They will be driving together each morning. Still haven't figured out the return trip as Kurt has football into the evening. We are really winging it, which we do best!

So one of the toughes part of this new adventure for the Hines Crew has been leaving Bedford Football. As you all know Kurt started this program and the amazing success it has had. We really saw ourselves here forever and Kurt retiring from Bedford in 30 years.

We start driving across the U.S.A. on Sunday and will be documenting our travels. I will be Blogging, Snapchatting, Facebooking, and Tweeting while Kurt is driving.

Hoping to make it to Cleveland on the first day, Des Moines 2nd, Longmont to see family, Canyon lands in Utah, and then into San Diego. That is the plan, but leaving a a day or two for weather or touring some cool places.

Sophia and Abby will be following us in my car and Kurt and I will be in the Tundra. I am sure we will rotate, but the music choice in the girls car might be a bit rough.

Moving truck comes today, we will be "camping out" in our house for the next few days. We have a going away party at Shorty's tonight, a wedding tomorrow night, Saturday to say goodbye to my parents, church on Sunday and then we hit the road.

Bring on the memories and the new experiences ahead! Hope you will follow us and we plan to be back next July. Can't miss the Chatham 4th of July or the RI garage party!

So it has been almost a year since I have posted something... Just proof that I have been busy.
So much goes on in the Hines household in just one day that it would take me forever for me to catch you all up. Seeing most (10 of you) follow me on Facebook you already know most of the craziness.

I have had a few people say I share way too much and put my family on display. To them I say, don't read it, "unfriend" me, delete me. I am who I am and my family is real and we put on no fake face.
I have been struggling with a few issues that included what others thought of me and knowing I was being judged for my choices. MY Choices... Slowly I have let go and accepted myself. Can't make everyone happy but yourself, right?

I figured I would come back to posting on my blog and not worry about others think. So I am back and ready to take my blog back with the humor, sarcasm, and TMI's.

Challeges That Make You Grow...

The past few months have been filled with challenges and growth. At times I didn’t think I was going to make it through and other times I knew it was a blessing in disguise.

On January 7th 2011 I was hit with a career changing issue which caused my "forced" resignation from Bedford High School on January 14th. I loved my interaction with students, parents and some of the staff. I was hired at BHS before it opened in 2007. I had started a lot of the programs, events, and website at the high school. In my 3.5 years there I had 4 different bosses/principals that in itself is challenging because they were all so different in how things were done. I adapted very well, I was the information hub for the school. If something was going on I knew about it, staff or even administration had questions they came to me. I bonded with a lot of the parents and students there. Many of the students I was drawn to were very much like me in high school and needed some guidance or just to know that someone cared about them. Because the school was so new, the district didn’t realize they needed some extra help in the main office for 1300 students, each day was a challenge to keep up and remain on my "A" game. I gave so much time to the district and understood why I could not be paid what others in my position were getting paid. In my years there we were never told what our jobs/responsibilities were. If something needed to be done or if someone refused to do something I would take care of it and then that job would stick. Many times I would take care of something and ask administration for help and they would say yes to my face and then drop the ball so my time was wasted. It was hard to see many situations of double standards depending on who you were not only as staff but students as well. Don’t get me started on that...

So on the 7th of January I found out who was in my corner and who was going to stab me in the back. That meeting was very eye opening. Here I was "friends" with these colleagues and they threw me under the bus and even back over me. To this day I still don't know why, and I won’t because they have been told not to have contact with me. WTF did I do? I even went to the Superintendent and he told me nothing but that I resigned and that was that... I was backed into a corner with my union rep not helping or saying a word, and she gave her notes to the SAU and the principal, total conflict of interest. Oh, and to find out she got a job a week later in the human resourse at the SAU, no wonder she didn't say anything, it may of costed her a possible job with them. Glad I paid into the union... NOT!

January 14th I was forced to resign from BHS... I was floored! Never in all my years had I been through anything like this. As I packed up my desk the principal watched me which was so humiliating. I was handed a bill for $185.00 for what they had paid me already for the week, ya I dont think so... When I turned to leave I did say, “you have no clue about the unethical behavior going on not only with staff but with your own administrators, you will look back at this situation and realize it was a huge mistake you make and karma is a bitch". Off I went with my paper box that just happened to be beside my desk. I couldn't believe what was happening. Not knowing why, then hearing rumors from so many was brutal.

For 2.5 months I applied for over 65 jobs and had too much time on my hands to get more angry and upset. Someday I couldn't even get out of bed. I cried more during that time then I had in the past 20 years. I applied for unemployment, and got $325 total, but now have to pay back because the SAU said I resigned. I even spoke to the states lawyers and they were not impressed on how Bedford handled the situation. The kicker in all of this is that Kurt works for the same district and coaches at the high school, we were known as the "power couple" of BHS. I called lawyers, my union rep for the state, and others to help me with possibly suing the district for depravation of character and wrongful termination. Hard to do when Kurt works in Bedford. I decided to walk away. Not an easy thing to do.

Going to school activities is tough; because I don't know what rumors the people are hearing and believing. Also I still to this day don’t know why and no one will return my emails/calls to tell me.

Many others at this high school have been treated this way and it is so disheartening. You just never know what tomorrow will bring. I still have good and bad days. People who I thought were my friends weren't. So that sucks, and not knowing why is the worst. If I did that would have me move on and learn from it, but how do you learn from something you don’t know about.

The up side of this is I did get a sweet job at SNHU for more money and better working conditions. It is totally different from what I was doing at BHS. With all the craziness I hear about what is going on up on the hill in Bedford it is a blessing I am out of there. I just hope that the administration realizes the problems they have and take care of them quickly so they do not have to put anyone else through what they did to me and others I watched them do it to.

20 Years Old... The "I am Not Old Enough Age. Yet, I am Old Enough Age..."

20 years old is that age when it is that year of not being able to rent a car, rent a hotel room, drink or go to Vegas or Mohegan Sun, yet you are old enough to vote, smoke, buy lottery tickets, and get put in adult prison. This is the time one must find a path in life and try to stay on it.

Halee is turning 20 on Sunday November 21st. Like my friend Kerri said " Amazing how fast time passes us by. When our parents said that we thought they were exaggerating..... boy... were they right!"

It really feels like yesterday that I was on my way to Newton Wellesley Hospital where I was born and I wanted to have my first born (and 2nd born).

After a few hours of labor Halee was born and I was in shock...

My best friend KK came to be with me.

KK: " Jill, where is Halee?"

Me: " Um, under a tanning lamp down the hall."

KK: " Lets go get her"

Me: " Really..."

Off we went to get Halee out of the nursery. I think the nurses knew that this new baby had a teen mom and a best friend who would be Halee's surrogate father for a few years. They gave us the squeakiest cart and put me the furthest away from the nursery. We went down the hall squeaking, passing every room that had "families" in them, and they would look out at us with a disapproving scowl. KK and I just picked up speed and cruised back to my room giggling like "teens" doing something wrong do.

KK: " I think she pooped"

Me: " What do I do?"

I was not fond of kids growing up, I did not like babysitting. ( I am not fond of kids now...)

I opened up Halee's diaper, "what the freak is that?" Seriously, the scariest stuff had come out of my perfect little girl. I didn't know the hospital fed my baby black tar. This was just the beginning of our adventure.

We spent countless hours poking, and testing food out on Halee. KK and I had a live doll. I can't believe some of the things we went through and we all survived.

KK and Halee played a huge roll in me having the family that I do today. KK introduced me to Kurt at Waterville Valley. I stayed for a week with college friends, during the day I would put Halee in the day care so I could ski. Kurt worked in the daycare with KK, very manly I know, but kinda hot at the same time... After a few days Kurt and I talked, and from there The Hines Crew developed.

Halee lived at Lasell College with me, had a huge part in creating our family, and is more than a daughter, she is a blessing to so many!

Our family motto:

There are but two lasting bequests we can give our children. One is roots, the other, wings.

Halee, take hold of this life, live it, and learn from it. Set your goals, walk the walk and know you have so many in your corner cheering you on and will be there to pick you up when you fall.

Just about a month ago my best friend had a baby girl. I can't even begin to tell the stories that we have been through together and the many challenges we both faced to get us to our places in life.

New Years Eve 2009-2010 we bought KK a pregnancy test, no big deal seeing she has been married for a few years and really wanted to have a baby. This is probably the 6 test we bought between the two of us, but mind you she only used one of those... Yup, the rest were for me. Sometimes when you have a positive result you are not satisfied till you pee on 3 or four more sticks, also shock can cause you to have disbelief too. Moving on...

We knew KK was pregnant on New Years. No one but the four of us knew, KK, me, and our husbands. I was so excited for her. KK would call though out her expansion and we would laugh and cry about situations she was dealing with and things I had dealt with. After nine months the time was upon her and her awesome husband. I got a picture text from KK while I was at work... Now you have to know many people think I have no visible emotions, um wrong. I had to excuse myself from the high school main office and go ball my eyes out in the bathroom.

I could not wait to head to the Cape and see this new baby that I had look forward to for years. KK was there for the birth of Halee and was like her 2nd mother and still is. I was so not ready to have a baby at age 19 and KK and I went through so many things with bringing up Halee. I longed for KK to have a baby so that she could experience all the fun, and hardship that having kids puts upon you.

I headed to the Cape a few weeks after Baby R arrived. I got off exit 11 and started to get teary, by the time I hit the Chatham line I was a basket case. I had to drive around Chatham trying to pull myself together. Finally when I thought I was ok, I pulled into her driveway and saw KK holding a baby, her baby. Jeepers, what is wrong with me, I started sobbing. Yes, me, snotty and hivey... I can't even express the happiness I had for KK and her new family.

Another one of KK's closest and oldest friends came down from Maine, it was such a great weekend just sitting listening to stories of family, kids, post postpartum issues, and lots of snuggles w Baby R.

I guess I realized how lucky I am to have a family, 4 great kids, and friends that you can tell anything to and don’t judge you for taking meds to make it through the day:). I went home from that weekend realizing life is challenging and tough at times but it is also spiritually uplifting and exciting as well. I felt so happy for life that I have and all the challenges that have been set out before me, so that others can learn from me or I can help others because I have been there.

Closing out our Summer...

Summer has come to a close for the Hines Crew. I returned back to work last week and I am not sure Kurt even had a summer vacation. He does football all year round. Morning work outs 3 times a week, 7 on & on Wednesday nights, coaches meetings, two football camps, trips to Boston College to check out his players at that camp, and then the start of Aug double sessions. Today is his first scrimmage at BHS vs Merrimack. I am looking forward to a great year at BHS, a new principal has been hired and I am excited to work for and with him. It will be nice to have discipline, consistency, and someone who does what he says he will! I think the staff feels the same way. I will keep you posted on this journey...

Our kids start school on Sept 2nd, so that leaves them home for a week without us. If they don't kill each other it will be an act of God!

I might have to let them know for each phone call that they make to me at work and they are not bleeding to death will cost them money or chores.

Halee will be working 2 jobs while she is home till May, Abby is going into her sophomore year, Brock will be in 8th grade, and Soph will be in 7th. Time is flying by! Before I know it all three younger kids will be in high school together. Either they make a pact not to throw each other under the bus or their HS life might send me over the edge. I could not image what HS would of been like if I had two other siblings in the same school. I might have actually done well and stayed in school during the day.

As summer comes to a close I think back on what we accomplished.

Painted the interior of the house
Planted a garden and it is reaping edible food
Finished the hardwood stairs so they fit now
Cut down trees and cleared out by the driveway (thanks to Abby being grounded:)
Cleaned out the house of "stuff" and Freecycled it.
Halee and I drove 3200 miles in 3.5 days ( next time we are taking our time!)
Few trips to the beach (not as many as I would of liked)
RI to paint Kurt's parents house
Kids to camps

So now the crisp morning air starts to roll in and we all begin to live on a schedule again I look forward to many great memories with my family and friends. All of the challenges that we will face this year will just make us stronger and an example to those around us.

Trip Across the US. DAY 2

July 23rd 9:30am

My bag made it and was the first ones off the carouse!
Halee picked me up and off we go. Well she announces we have places to go and people to see. So leaving the airport to head home was not going to happen. We drove all over the SD area. But I did get to tan at her former work. ITan. Talk about relaxing! Much needed! After visiting w people packing up and getting organized we were off. Halee and I were going to split up the trip by driving four hours a time and switching. As I am typing Halee is on her 13th hour of driving. She is Amp’ed up! I tried sleeping but it was scary driving through some of the areas. Big dead animals on the side of the road (elk, deer, and jack rabbits), swervy and hilly roads, and crazy landscapes. Halee kept announcing how many feet above sea level we were but saying 7000 square feet. I felt like I could not correct her cause I thought it was funny. After the 8th time she corrected herself… There was a point that we did not see a soul for 3 hours. Halee has decided that she wants to take a geology class to figure out why the landscape looks the way it does out here in Southern Utah and Western CO. The pictures I have posted do it justice, the depth and height was just incredible!
Just a side note, if you ever drive out here stopping at the scenic rest areas is beautiful, but the bathrooms are so ruthless! I dry heaved a few times. Hand sanitizer is a must! By the way XM/Sirius radio is a must driving in these areas!
We drove through Vegas at about 11:30 last night. Coming from someone who has A.D.D. I was glad I was not driving. I totally had “the shiny ball” syndrome! So much to look at and so many lights! It is crazy how one drives for 4 hours out of SD and rising up out of the desert is this playground for adults! If we had more time and Halee had a fake ID we could have had some fun… Actually she probably has one, (not my problem, right?)
We are heading to my extended family’s place in Longmont, CO. Looking forward to seeing them, but also a much needed shower and nap!
Just hit a car wash outside of Vail (10,200 elevation) oh my ears!, we went through major “herds” of bugs! We are all shinny and pretty. Now we could use the same thing. I just pulled a Mexican shower in a Shell gas station parking lot. I didn’t even care that people gave me a “look’. Halee should of done the same but whatever...
