Growing up Asian American, Yia felt shame. She cringed at the heavily accented English of the older women in her family. She felt embarrassed that none of her teachers could say her name. And she hated the cruel schoolyard digs about the sexual prowess of Asian women. So for a long time, she rejected that part of herself, changing her name and telling herself that she was different. One Halloween, not knowing what else to wear, she donned a long black dress with two slits up the side. She slicked her hair back, put on red lipstick. When she looked in the mirror, the voice that spoke was not that of Yia, but of Madame Mai Li, an Asian American Madame who owned a brothel, spoke in a heavy accent and readily gave out advice on sexual matters. Isaac Levin spent several years living on the streets of several California cities. In 2004, he hit rock bottom, and received a wakeup call. He realized that it was time for him to take responsibility for his life, and to start making some changes. He put himself into a drug rehab program, and then into a halfway house where he began to practice yoga. It was that yoga practice that first brought him to OneTaste, where the community became his true family. In the roughly fifteen months since his arrival, Isaac has grown healthier in mind, body, and spirit. He now works as a massage therapist, manages OneTaste's massage studio, and dedicates part of his time each week to OneTaste's Fill Up America program, collecting and distributing food to the San Francisco's homeless.
