I’m just going to come right out and say it - Nurgle is my favourite faction to make name generators for. Sorry all the other factions! That goes for all game systems too; so far I’ve made character name generators for Nurgle Rotbringers, Nurgle Daemons and Death Guard, as well as a Nurgle team name generator for Blood Bowl. That’s to say nothing of the various other Chaos-based generators that have a Nurgle sub-option. Every single one has been an absolute treat.

There’s something wonderfully unique about the way Nurgle fuses the macabre with the comedic that really speaks to me. It’s always a pleasure attempting to capture that spirit in the options that these random generators produce, and even as the person who created the content I find clicking through the options endlessly amusing - there’s always some new combination that I hadn’t consciously considered that will elicit a smile and a chuckle.

This brings me to a slightly sad note; this may well be my final Nurgle name generator for the foreseeable future. I just can’t think of any other aspect of the plague god and his various forces that needs to be covered. This Maggotkin of Nurgle army name generator is it. I recently read the newest edition of the Hedonites of Slaanesh battletome, and one of the things that really struck me was the sheer variety of Slaanesh forces mentioned in the lore. Slaanesh, it seems, has a practically infinite number of insidious ways to corrupt the peoples and civilisations of the Mortal Realms, and this is reflected in everything from a minor organisation of gourmands that take things a little too far, to whole legions of cavorting daemons and cultists.

When I came to assemble content for this army name generator, all of this rich and varied lore proved to be a truly inspiring asset, and I hope you’ll see this reflected in the results you generate. It’s always my intention that these name generators should be more than simply a way of coming up with a label to apply to a pre-existing force, but a means of inspiring new projects and ideas through implied backstory. The Nighthaunt character name generator was one of my very earliest efforts way back in the olden times of February 2019, and though I’ve learned a lot since then it still stands up as one of my favourite generators for Age of Sigmar. I really tried to bring a sense of horror, dread and tragedy to the identities of these damned souls, and I’m bringing the same energy today with this Nighthaunt army name generator.

I like the idea that an army’s name should tell a story and, to me, names like ‘The Vestiges of Deathless Malice’ and ‘The Slenderghasts of the Mirrored Crypt’ do just that. They’re evocative, hinting at the dark and intriguing history that led to the army becoming what it is today, or what its motivations might be. Well blow me down with a wet fish! I can hardly believe it’s been almost exactly two years since I published my Idoneth Deepkin character name generator. How time flies when your soul is but a hair’s breadth from withering away to nothing. Clearly everyone’s favourite soggy aelves are long overdue some attention here at Realm of Plastic and, with the events of Broken Realms: Morathi still fresh in our minds, now seems like a great time to revisit the darkest, coldest depths of the Mortal Realms with a brand new Idoneth Deepkin army name generator.

No self-respecting Idoneth Deepkin soul-raiding force should be without an appropriate name. It’s a matter of honour, even though your hapless victims will, naturally, not remember it (except perhaps in their nightmares). I can just imagine eyeless Namarti thralls screaming names like ‘The Shallowsalt Shadows’ and ‘The Riptide Scions’ in triumph whilst skewering an impoverished fisherman as he lashes out with a peg-leg in a desperate bid to defend his modest homestead. Isn’t being part of Grand Alliance: Order just so wholesome?

This one has been a long time coming! Despite being a faction that I’ve loved since my earliest years in the hobby, and despite them being an army that I actually collect and play with, the poor Beasts of Chaos are the last of the major Age of Sigmar factions to get a character name generator (though they do have a Greatfray Name Generator). Weird innit?

Maybe I was worried that I wouldn’t do them justice. To be honest, I still am - I’ve restarted work on this generator twice in the last year, and I’ve done more last minute tinkering with it pre-launch than for any other generator I can remember.

Part of the issue is that there are actually very few named Beasts of Chaos characters, even if you go back and include all of the beastmen characters from the World That Was. This means that I had very little to go on in terms of beastly name structure conventions, and a lot less raw material to work with than I usually have. I’ve addressed this partly by limiting the number of name variables, and partly by filling in the blanks using my own judgement and imagination.

This is always a tricky balancing act - if I limit the options too much then everything starts to look samey and dull. But if I create a huge amount of material from nothing, then there’s the risk of diluting the distinctive feel of the faction with sounds and name structures that aren’t supported by the lore, or simply feel too awkward or not quite right. Still, I think that what we have here is a decent compromise, even if I am already planning to revisit it again one day!

Never before has one man put so much work into a random generator that will be used by so few people! I mean, this one is very niche, isn’t it? This food and drink generator is ostensibly made for games masters running campaigns set in Aqshy, the Realm of Fire, for Cubicle7’s Age of Sigmar: Soulbound roleplaying game. Who but the most dedicated and detail-obsessed GM is going to make use of this?

And it took ages to make. It’s easily the most structurally complex random generator I’ve ever put together, and in fact the reason I’m publishing it now, rather than six months ago when the creative content was completed, is that it’s taken me this long to work out the mental and technical gymnastics necessary to code the damn thing!

But you know what, I love it anyway. The results may sound a little awkward, but I think it captures the glorious absurdity of the way Games Workshop names the elements of the Age of Sigmar setting, and ultimately it’s just good, clean fun. I just hope this ridiculous effort manages to find its way to that one GM that needs it - this one’s for you buddy!

I’ve been on the verge of making character name generators for specific Cities of Sigmar for two years, and now I’ve finally done it. Only it’s not a City of Sigmar after all, but a City of Morathi-Khaine - I can only hope that Sigmar will forgive my treachery.

This name generator has come about for a number of reasons. Firstly, I was inspired by the great story and dramatic events of Broken Realms: Morathi (you can read my review here). Secondly, it was a fairly straightforward one to put together, so why not? I combined the contents of my Daughters of Khaine and Scourge Privateers name generators, then just added a few additional bits and pieces inspired by the newest lore developments. I like to think the result really captures the flavour of this gloomy coastal location and its murderous inhabitants, but I’ll let you be the judge.

The Seraphon have evolved somewhat since we were first introduced to them when Age of Sigmar launched. In the beginning they were all barely-corporeal star-daemons, temporarily dreamed into existence by the Slann. More recently the Seraphon lore has evolved to incorporate the concept of ‘the coalesced’, giving at least some Seraphon enclaves their stompy, jungley, lizardmen characteristics back. Whichever take on the Seraphon you prefer, the celestial elements are still a big part of their background, and you’ll find more Aztec-inspired mysticism than you can shake a stick at in this Seraphon army name generator.

In reality (or at least the reality of the mortal realms) I suspect that many Khorne warbands probably don’t bother giving themselves a name. It seems like an effete indulgence for a ravening band of blood-crazed cannibals. I can’t exactly picture the leaders of the Bloodbound, soaked in viscera and sat around a meeting table made of skulls, debating whether or not ‘The Hounds of the Bloodfeast’ is an accurate representation of their brand.

That said, you and I don’t live in the reality of the mortal realms. We live in the reality of the Warhammer Age of Sigmar hobby, and in this world narrative rules! To go to war - albeit a tiny tabletop war - without a suitably imposing name for your miniatures collection is an act of supreme martial dishonour. So do yourself a favour, appease the non-existent Blood God (and the definitely-does-exist Dice God), and go a few rounds with this here army name generator. Your tiny miniature murderers will thank you for it.

It’s been Sigmar-knows how many millennia since the destruction of the World-That-Was, and yet the stoic duardin of the Dispossessed haven’t changed very much. While their Fyreslayer and Kharadron kin have evolved and discovered new ways of integrating with the mortal realms, the Dispossessed stubbornly cling on to their subterranean halls, chainmail and horned helms.

This doesn’t seem to have done them a great deal of good, since they’re apparently no longer strong enough to form their own independent faction, instead taking up residence alongside all the other scattered relics of the World-That-Was in the Cities of Sigmar. Personally, I love the concept of duardin, aelves and men putting aside their differences and working together in the common interest, but there’s no denying that each of them retains their own unique cultural character, and that’s more than enough reason to give them their own character name generator.

If you’re a Sons of Behemat player there’s really no excuse for not naming every model in your army - a 2000 point force consists of just 6 models after all! Plus, the gargant models are so characterful and customisable that they practically demand to be given a name. That’s where this handy-dandy character name generator comes in.

As befits the massive size of the Sons of Behemat, this generator is one of the biggest I’ve ever produced. There are several different name formats and literally billions of possible combinations, covering not just your vanilla gargant names but (at the time of writing) names uniquely tailored to three of the mortal realms as well. I’m particularly pleased with how this one turned out. Usually the randomised nature of these generators means that there’ll be the occasional dud or awkward combo, but I find myself being entertained and inspired by the options that this one produces time and time again. This Collegiate Arcane character name generator is accompanied by a yarn, so everyone gather around. Cast your mind back to the distant plague-free epoch of 2015, dear reader. In the era when Warhammer Age of Sigmar was taking its first bold steps into the world, there were no battletomes, no allegiance abilities and no points. In this wild and lawless frontier, a billion splintered factions - some with but a single unit to their name - fought desperately for survival amid the cooling ashes of Warhammer Fantasy Battles.

Many of these micro-factions would later be consolidated into the more complete and cohesive forces that we know today, but many more would feel the icy hand of Nagash upon their shoulder, dragged into the timeless nether-hell of Warhammer Legends, never to be seen or spoken of again.

Many of these early micro-factions formed the kernel of much bigger ideas; ‘Mordants’ became the Flesh-eater Courts, and Witch Elves gave birth to the Daughters of Khaine. Many more were scooped up and organised under the Cities of Sigmar, forming a single force whilst retaining their unique individual character.

Because of the unique and unusual way that Cities of Sigmar was formed, it just makes no sense to have a single character name generator for this entire faction. No one generator can possibly do justice to the plethora of humans, aelves, duardin, warriors, wizards, priests, pirates, engineers and… well, the list goes on! All of this to say that the battlemages of the Collegiate Arcane need and deserve their own character name generator - and this is it!

The Lumineth Realm-lords have to be one of the most interesting factions in Warhammer Age of Sigmar - there’s just so much going on! Lest we forget, these are the souls of high elves from the World-That-Was, trapped inside the gut of Slaanesh for millennia before being freed and reshaped into new beings. Did these new beings set about recreating the safe, comfortable civilisation that Ulthuan that they (and we) all know and love? No! They built an all-new civilisation based around the production and consumption of mind-expanding crystals, with a side-order of cow worship. Like I said, there’s a lot going on.

The Mega-Gargants are up for pre-order! Soon you’ll be able to field a pure Sons of Behemat army but, for me, the most exciting part of this release is the prospect of adding mercenary Mega-Gargants into other Warhammer Age of Sigmar forces. The rules for including them are simple, but by Sigmar there’s so much raw creative potential bound up in this concept.

Where to even begin? Now every faction can include a mercenary Mega-Gargant. By my count there are currently twenty-three (!) factions in the game, so that’s at least twenty-three unique opportunities to convert and theme your slobbering new centrepiece. Twenty-three! And that’s before we take subfactions and realms into account! How many more exclamation marks am I going to need before this paragraph is over?! To avoid this article becoming longer than the unabridged text of the Kharadron Code, I’m going to go ahead and count down the top ten GIANT conversion possibilities that really jump out at me. I’ve saved the best for last, so let’s get into it!

10) Cities of Sigmar - The Mighty Massive Mascot

Each city we know of in the Mortal Realms has its own distinctive character, and what an opportunity the Mega-Gargant presents to apply that character on a massive scale. This one sits at number ten on our list simply because barely any conversion work is needed to make the Mega-Gargant fit right in - just give him a few extra shields to represent the city’s most common troop type, paint them all up in your city’s livery and you’re potentially done.

That said, you could definitely take things further if you had a mind to. Tempest’s Eye is a noble city in the clouds, so why not grab a griffon kit and give your Mega-Gargant a pair of angelic wings? Anvilgard is a murk port city, so perhaps go all-out with the nautical theme, festooning your gargant with barnacles, rotten timber and rigging in the manner of a Necrofex Colossus? How about covering him in the verdant flora and greenery of the Living City? Cities of Sigmar is one of the most adaptable and creative factions in the game, and now that applies to the Mega-Gargant too!

9) Fyreslayers - The Auric Runestomper

Gargants and Fyreslayers share a surprising amount in common. They’re both big-boned, half-naked mercenaries with a fierce temper. The new Mega-Gargant looks set to fit in very nicely indeed with a Fyreslayers force, both aesthetically and thematically (the Warstomper even has a nicely braided beard right out of the box) - but there are one or two extra things the dedicated converter could do to really make their gargant look the part.

Aside from the obvious disparity in height, the biggest visual difference between the Mega-Gargant and your average Fyreslayer is the absence of a plumed helmet. Not the easiest thing in the world to sculpt with green stuff I grant you, but consider this - if your efforts don’t quite match up to duardin workmanship, you can just say that the gargant beat the metal into shape with his fists. Narrative! Add a few ur-gold runes and you’re done.

8) Ogor Mawtribes - The Mountain of Meat

As kindred spirits in the Destruction grand alliance, you really don’t need to do much - or any - work to make a Mega-Gargant fit in with the Ogor Mawtribes. The Gutbusters in particular share a lot of the same design cues. But what about the Beastclaw Raiders? There’s a great opportunity here to add a few choice elements to the Mega-Gargant model to really tie him in nicely with that ‘mountain chic’ look.

Fur is one of the easier things to sculpt, and the Beastclaw Raiders are covered in it, so why not add a few animal hides to your gargant’s panoply of ragged coverings? You could even paint up the Warstomper’s stone club to look like an ice weapon - no conversion work required. What about a sprinkling of snow across the head and shoulders to suggest that the gargant is big and tall enough to form his own micro-climate? And what could be more ogorish than a big old gut-plate? Nothing I say! And with that, your Mega-Gargant is ready for some raiding, Beastclaw style.

7) Gloomspite Gitz - The Troggargant

Ask yourself this - what’s bigger, badder and better than a troggoth? If your answer isn’t ‘a troggoth the size of a gargant’ then you haven’t been paying attention! Just look at the silhouette of the Mega-Gargant and tell me it doesn’t have the makings of a fine oversized troggoth conversion - an ‘ultramegatroggboss’ or a ‘troggargant’ if you will.

Unfortunately it’s not just a matter of a straight head-swap, since the standard troggoth heads will be way too small. Some sculpting will be needed to give the Mega-Gargant’s head and face the bulbous, drooping features that the grots’ cave-dwelling allies are known for. Even more sculpting will be needed to festoon the brute with a veritable forest of mushrooms and other fungus, but what a glorious sight that would be. I’d probably remove most of the clothing and other paraphernalia too, and also bulk out the forearms. Perfection!

6) Beasts of Chaos - The Mega-Gorgant

There’s so much variety in the Beasts of Chaos army (including the existing Chaos Gargant) that the Mega-Gargant pretty much fits right in regardless. And with the Ghorgon and Cygor, the Beasts of Chaos already have bigger and uglier versions of the basic gor stomping around. But are they bigger and uglier enough? Can we fashion a beast that’s even biggerer and uglierer? Yes. Yes we can.

As with the troggargant, the head of a Ghorgon is probably going to be a little on the small side for a Mega-Gargant, but you might just get away with it if you bulk up the area around it with extra neck muscle and a shaggy mane. Or you could try using the head of a Thundertusk or Stonehorn - they’re pretty beasty. Then it’s a case of lopping off the feet, reeplacing them with hooves, and covering the legs, back and shoulders with a sculpted layer of shaggy fur - not too much of a challenge if you have a little experience with green stuff. Plus, this is a creature of Chaos after all, so season to taste with your mutations of choice!

5) Maggotkin of Nurgle - The Very Great Unclean One

There’s a certain breed of Nurgle collector that just loves taking good, clean, honest miniatures and perverting them to the cause of the Plaguefather via the liberal application of green stuff sores, buboes and errant intestinal tracts. The bigger the model, the broader the canvas upon which to sculpt all manner of horrific afflictions.

I think it’s safe to say that there’s never been a bigger canvas than the new mega-gargant kit, so there’s never been a bigger opportunity to cram so much diseased and mutated horror onto a single miniature. Cut open his poor, plastic belly and stuff it to overflowing with rotting entrails and cavorting nurglings. Sculpt a mess of tentacles growing out of his face. Add sagging folds of bloated, necrotic flesh to his legs. You could settle for a mortal gargant corrupted to the service of Nurgle or go even further, stripping back his clothes and accessories to the bare flesh whilst adding antlers, a cycloptic eye and a snout to turn him into the biggest plaguebearer the realms have ever seen!

4) Orruk Warclans - The Avatar of Gorkamorka

Many of the gods and demigods of the Mortal Realms have been represented in miniature form, but as yet Gorkamorka isn’t one of them. While you wait for the big green ball of destruction to show his faces (he does have two of them) why not convert a mega-gargant to be his avatar?

Massive, muscled and mean, the mega-gargant kit is the perfect frame on which to graft a greenskin hulk worthy of the two-headed orruk god. There are multiple head options in the kit, so it’s just a case of using two of them instead of one! The noses and jaws will need a bit of green stuff work to look more orruk, then simply paint him green and you’re done. If you wanted to take things further you could borrow some design cues from the Ironjawz and Bonesplitterz factions, like bone trophies, beaten metal and a great big choppa!

3) Nighthaunt - The Great Big Boo

We’re into the top three, and things are about to get crazy! As you may have heard, Death armies have the option of taking a Gatebreaker Mega-Gargant. That’s fantastic but, when it comes to the Nighthaunt, perhaps you feel that there’s something a little incongruous about a horde of ethereal nightmares allowing a mountain of living flesh into their midst. Well, I ask you, does the Gatebreaker really need to be alive? What’s to stop the departed souls of gargants being perverted to Nagash’s cause in the same way as any other being?

Yes, that’s right - I’m proposing an ethereal Mega-Gargant. Probably the least subtle spectre since the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, and just as deadly. You’d need to be either brave or insane to chop off your Mega-Gargant’s legs and replace them with billowing rags, not to mention an engineering genius to find a way to support a model of this size as if it were floating, but I believe in you. At least it’s a little easier to gouge out the Gatebreaker’s eyes and cut off his nose to form a leering, hooded skull, and after this conversion challenge the ethereal paint job will be a breeze.

2) Flesh-Eater Courts - The Abhorrant Ghoul Emperor

There’s precedent in the lore of the Flesh-eater Courts for mordants to grow monstrously large - Crypt Horrors and Crypt Flayers were once average-sized ghouls that have been allowed to gorge on the blood of their vampiric master. You can see where I’m going with this. What if the mordant in question did a lot of gorging, until they became the size of, say, a Mega-Gargant?

This is a conversion that could be very straightforward or very involved, depending on your skill level, and still look great regardless. You could achieve the basic mordant look by taking the Kraken-eater head and chopping off his nose, then sticking shards of bone through his skin. Or take it a step further and sculpt a horrifically exposed spinal column down his back. Finally, if you really want to go to town, slap a pair of Terrorgheist wings onto his back, whittle some kind of bone crown and play him as an Abhorrant Ghoul King on Terrorgheist. Et voila! You have a thoroughly imposing Abhorrant Ghoul Emperor!

1) Skaven - The Ultimate Abomination

Who you gonna call? Clan Moulder! They are, after all, the natural converters of the Age of Sigmar setting. I can very easily imagine them ‘converting’ a rat ogor into a monstrosity as tall as a city wall, or indeed a Mega-Gargant into some kind of lumbering rat-creature. Picture a Hellpit Abomination. Now picture it five times bigger and standing upright on two legs. Depending on how much of a Skaven fan you are, that image probably has you either twitching your whiskers with excitement or suppressing your gag reflex.

I’m no Master Moulder, so I can’t quite picture exactly how such a bizarre conversion might come together, but I’d start out by purchasing a Mega-Gargant and at least one Hellpit Abomination kit. I’d cut the parts off their respective sprues, pile them all up in front of me, and get to gluing bits of lumpen flesh together in whatever manner most pleases me. Would the results look like a viable creature? Doesn’t matter! For good measure, I’d probably strap some rickety wooden platforms to the beast and have a few nervous clanrats goading it on, or stitching it back up on the fly. Yes-yes!

The Skaven were already a multitudinous threat back when there was only one world to conquer, and now with several near-infinite realms to spread across they probably number in the billions, if not tens of billions or perhaps even more. In fact, it’s the name options that look natural and flow more easily off the tongue that seem more out of place here!

What is there to say about the Lumineth Realm-Lords that they haven’t already boasted about at great length themselves? Seriously, these aelves are proud of their civilisation to the point of arrogance, despite their claims of transcendental enlightenment. It’s precisely that interesting juxtaposition of enlightenment and arrogance that I’ve tried to reflect in this army name generator, and I only hope the result is worthy of the sons and daughters of Teclis.

I usually try to get access to the battletome for the faction I’m making an army name generator for, since it’s important to me that all of the generated names should be grounded in the official lore of the Warhammer Age of Sigmar setting. I put this one together without access to a battletome, but given the sheer volume of Warhammer Community articles and promotional content that Games Workshop put out for the Lumineth Realm-Lords over the protracted lockdown period here in the UK, I still had a wealth of material to draw on. To my great annoyance, the one thing I’ve been unable to deduce is the general term that the Lumineth use for their armies - is it ‘legions’? I’m going with legions.

Well, it had to happen sooner or later - the poster boys and girls of Age of Sigmar now have a name generator! Last week’s vote put Stormcast Eternals neck-and-neck with the Beasts of Chaos, with both polling at 25%. So, I had a choice - and despite my (purely platonic) love of beastmen, I figured that a Stormcast Eternals name generator would be of most use to the most people. With the army being so popular, this really needed to be a cornerstone of this massive ongoing project to create name generators for every faction in the game, so I’m glad you guys voted for it. Perhaps this will be the foundation for name generators that focus on individual Stormhosts in the future.

As for this week’s poll, I’m shaking things up a bit this time. Some of the previous options had sat there unloved for a few weeks now, so I’m throwing out all of them and starting afresh. As always there are 2 options for Order, 2 for Chaos, 1 for Death and 1 for Destruction. I want this week to be a real battle royale, so I’ve chosen factions that I think are going to be popular - have at it! The winner will get a brand new name generator this time next week. What wonderful synchronicity! Here I am working on a character name generator for the mortal servants of Slaanesh and literally - as I’m working on it - Games Workshop preview the first new mortal Slaanesh hero miniature since Age of Sigmar debuted.
