Narrowing it down

2011-04-09T21:23:00.002-04:00

Around this time last year most Giants fans were thinking that general manager Jerry Reese was going to select Rolando McClain or C.J. Spiller with the 15^th overall pick of the first round of the 2010 draft. Some thought it would be Sean Weatherspoon or Derrick Morgan. Very few thought, and even fewer hoped, that Reese was going to take South Florida’s Jason Pierre-Paul, an extremely raw defensive end who played just one season of big-time college football. Those who didn’t view Pierre Paul as a realistic pick for the Giants at #15 were in complete denial, though, as Reese and head coach Tom Coughlin showed a ton of interest in the defensive end who mesmerized scouts with his back flips and freakish athletic ability and size.

It’s always difficult to determine what’s real and what’s complete nonsense when reading through the information and misinformation provided for draft geeks at this time of year. A few weeks prior to last year’s draft Reese told the media he wasn’t interested in having gymnasts on his football team, which was perceived as a shot at Pierre-Paul’s back-flipping theatrics. How’d that pan out?

So, in spite of recognizing that it’s quite simple to look like a clueless idiot when predicting what’s going to happen in the NFL draft, the following is a list of prospects we believe the Giants are currently considering with the 19^th overall pick of April 28’s first round.

Boston College offensive tackle Anthony Castonzo

Why would he interest the Giants?

He’s one of the top offensive tackles in this draft, and many believe he’s better-suited to protect the quarterback’s blind side. With David Diehl coming off a miserable season, he’s expected to be moved back to guard, and William Beatty is a huge question mark. Castonzo is considered to be the fighting type that never gives up, which Coughlin loves. The Boston College connection to Coughlin doesn’t hurt Castonzo’s chances to be a Giant either.

Georgia defensive end/outside linebacker Justin Houston

With Pierre-Paul, Justin Tuck, and Osi Umenyiora on the roster, and the failure of tweener Clint Sintim at strong side linebacker, taking Houston at #19 seems to make no sense for the Giants. We’re talking about a franchise that loves pass-rushers, however, and Houston will likely be the best one on the board by the time Big Blue is up. In addition, defensive end/linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka will be a free agent once a new CBA is reached, so Reese may feel Houston could fill the limited playing-time role the Giants seem to value so tremendously every season. Or perhaps Houston could battle Sintim for the strong side linebacker spot—even though neither is a good fit for the position.

Houston went through a private workout with the Giants, making it clear that Reese and company have been intrigued by the Georgia Bulldog product. Only The Man Upstairs knows why.

Alabama running back Mark Ingram

According to the NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora and others, the Giants are enamored with Ingram, the 2009 Heisman Trophy winner. Reese was also reportedly infatuated with C.J. Spiller last year, so there is probably truth to the Ingram rumors.

With Ahmad Bradshaw’s failure to secure the football, in addition to the reality that Brandon Jacobs is probably second-in-command at this point in his career, Ingram could be very high on the Giants’ board. Ingram has drawn comparisons to Emmitt Smith, so it’s not as if selecting the Alabama superstar at #19 is a reach. Chances are Ingram won’t make it beyond the Miami Dolphins’ 15^th overall pick, though.

Florida center/guard Mike Pouncey

Everyone who follows the draft knows that Pouncey was a disaster snapping the ball far too often last season. Still, the Giants have shown ample interest in Pouncey, whose twin brother had an excellent rookie season as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting center in 2010. If Pouncey can correct his snapping problem, he could be the Giants’ starting center for a decade. That's an enticing option, what with Shaun O'Hara and Rich Seubert on the back end of their careers.

Villanova guard/tackle Ben Ijalana

Ijalana is considered a late-first/early-second round prospect, but the Giants sent director of college scouting Marc Ross, offensive line coach Pat Flaherty, assistant offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr., and scout Chris Pettit to the Villanova offensive lineman’s pro day. It’s doubtful those four went just for the hell of it.

Although Ijalana played tackle in college, some project him to guard. Then there are those who think he could be the best offensive tackle to come out of this draft if he falls into the right situation. Are the Giants among those who believe Ijalana can be coached up to be a dominant protector of the quarterback’s blind side? If they take him in the first round, the answer will be yes.

Prospects the fans want but probably won’t get

Wisconsin offensive tackle Gabe Carimi

Carimi is a dominant run-blocker who will probably have a long career in the NFL. He suffers from an unfortunate disorder, though: The Right Tackle Syndrome. Right tackles aren’t considered to be as valuable as left tackles. In that case, don’t expect the Giants to invest a top-20 pick on Carimi.

Colorado cornerback Jimmy Smith

Considered to be the third-best cornerback in this draft, behind Patrick Peterson and Prince Amukamara, Smith would be an ideal fit at the #19 pick for a team looking to improve its secondary. Unfortunately for him, there are reports out there that some teams have taken him off their draft boards due to character concerns and a poor attitude. With that in mind, when is the last time the Giants selected a shady character such as Smith in the first round? Don’t waste your time trying to find out.

Illinois linebacker Martez Wilson

The Giants’ biggest need heading into this draft is linebacker. Yeah, what’s new? The team has needed a linebacker for years yet hasn’t invested a first-round pick on one since Carl Banks in 1983. So, forget about Wilson, who many believe is the best 4-3 linebacker prospect in this draft but has no experience at defensive end.

Maz Burrito's two-round mock draft

2011-03-31T21:33:00.006-04:00

One can definitely say writing up a mock draft is an exercise in futility—and a gigantic pain in the ass. Predicting where each player will be selected by which team turns out a rate of success comparable to a pitcher’s batting average. Even so, many jackasses, including myself, will churn out at least one mock draft each year, in order to pass the time during the most boring sports months on the calendar.

The real draft is 27 days away, so expect several changes to occur before the ever-so-slick Roger Goodell steps up to the podium and announces that the Carolina Panthers are on the clock with the first overall pick.

First Round

1. Carolina Panthers: LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson

Other than Ryan Mallett, whose stock has plummeted as a result of ugly rumors, there doesn’t appear to be a quarterback worth selecting #1 overall. In that case, new head coach Ron Rivera needs to take the best player available here, regardless of position, and Peterson has proven to be just that.

The Panthers already have a solid cornerback in Chris Gamble, but Peterson looks like a future star with the ability to make several game-changing plays on defense and as a returner. Despite the fact that a cornerback has never been picked #1 overall in NFL draft history, Peterson’s talent is just way too difficult to pass up. Carolina needs to restock its defense, and Peterson is the right player to get the ball rolling in the right direction.

2. Denver Broncos: Alabama defensive lineman Marcell Dareus

Following Josh McDaniels’ disastrous tenure as head coach and personnel decision maker, the Broncos have to get it right in this draft. A great start to new head coach John Fox’s reign would be to select the best defensive lineman.

Dareus played defensive end in a 3-4 scheme at Alabama, but he has the body type and strength to make a smooth transition to defensive tackle in Denver’s 4-3. The Broncos need an interior lineman to take some attention away from defensive ends Elvis Dumervil and Robert Ayers. Dareus would fit in nicely.

3. Buffalo Bills: Texas A&M outside linebacker Von Miller

Quick, name Buffalo’s best pass-rusher.

Uh, never mind. Even if we gave you 24 hours you probably wouldn’t be able to come up with an answer.

Two years ago the Bills used the 11^th overall pick on Penn State defensive end Aaron Maybin, who has proven to be perhaps the biggest bust from the 2009 draft, as he has yet to record his first sack in the NFL. To make matters even worse, Buffalo passed on Brian Orakpo, who was taken 13^th overall in that draft by the Redskins and has dominated in his first two years.

So, yeah, the Bills need a pass-rusher for their 3-4 defense in the worst way, and Miller is rated as by far the best in this draft. Many will say Buffalo is in desperate need of a quarterback, and it is, but as hilarious as this may sound, head coach Chan Gailey really likes Ryan Fitzpatrick, so don’t expect him to bring in Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert.

4. Cincinnati Bengals: Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green

Carson Palmer can make all the threats he wants; the Bengals won’t trade him. On the other hand, they could formulate moves to make it more enticing for him to return to the team, and there’s no better way to do that than grabbing the best receiver in the draft.

Green has drawn comparisons to Andre Johnson and Calvin Johnson. Some even have him rated as the best player overall in this draft.

Cincinnati needs to move on from the oftentimes ridiculous Chad Johnson/Ocho Cinco/Johnson era. In that regard, Green is more than capable of helping the Bengals do just that.

5. Arizona Cardinals: Auburn quarterback Cam Newton

Head coach Ken Whisenhunt had a rocky relationship with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh when he was offensive coordinator of the Steelers, but he knows what a talent such as Roethlisberger is capable of doing, as the two won a Super Bowl together in 2005, and then three years later Big Ben led the Steelers to another Super Bowl triumph—while Whisenhunt was on the opposing sideline with the Cardinals. Whisenhunt is in desperate need of a quarterback, and Newton possesses many similar skills to Roethlisberger’s.

Although Newton was just a one-year wonder at Auburn, and there are some considerable concerns about his throwing ability, his immense physical attributes could lead to him being the dynamic leader the Cardinals want at the most important position in football. In addition, Whisenhunt is the right man to hone the young quarterback’s development.

6. Tennessee Titans (trade-up with Cleveland Browns): Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert

The Titans need a quarterback of the future, so they jump up from pick #8—ahead of the San Francisco 49ers, who also have a terrible quarterback situation—to take Gabbert.

With veteran Kerry Collins, Tennessee is in a great position to have a player such as Gabbert stand on the sidelines and observe for a year or two. Gabbert has all the tools necessary to succeed in the NFL, but he’s coming from a spread system and needs a substantial amount of time to learn how to be effective in reading defenses.

7. San Francisco 49ers: Nebraska cornerback Prince Amukamara

New head coach Jim Harbaugh is disappointed he wasn’t able to get Gabbert, but Amukamara is a nice consolation. The 49ers are very thin at cornerback, and Amukamara is rated as the second-best player at the position in this draft.

In order to bring the 49ers back to greatness, Harbaugh will be looking for high-character players with great work ethics. In that regard, Amukamara is an ideal fit.

8. Cleveland Browns (trade-down with Tennessee Titans): Auburn defensive tackle Nick Fairley

With new defensive coordinator Dick Jauron switching the Browns to the 4-3 scheme, Cleveland needs an impact player on the line, and Fairley dropping this far works out beautifully.

Fairley’s stock has dropped a little over the last month, as many were projecting him as the #1 overall pick not too long ago. Some have been discouraged by the fact he’s less than 300 pounds, but he showed he could take over and dominate a game much more often than Dareus did in college, and the Browns would be thrilled to build a defense around the Auburn product.

9. St. Louis Rams (trade-up with Dallas Cowboys): Clemson defensive end Da’Quan Bowers

Head coach Steve Spagnuolo was the man who started using four defensive ends on the field at the same time when he was defensive coordinator of the New York Giants. With Bowers dropping this far, Spags can’t help but move up to get the Clemson pass-rusher.

Veteran defensive end Chris Long finally showed some elite skills last season for the Rams, as he finished with nine sacks. In order to become a dominant defense, however, St. Louis needs another intimidating presence coming from the other side. After posting 15.5 sacks last fall, Bowers appears to be the best fit for the job.

10. Washington Redskins: Cal defensive end Cameron Jordan

Daniel Snyder finally has real football people making personnel decisions for him. General manager Bruce Allen and head coach Mike Shanahan have to know that their defensive line is one of the weakest in the NFL, so they’re thrilled to see Jordan fall to them.

Jordan’s stock has skyrocketed in the last few months, and with good reason. He was a dominant player for the Bears last year, manhandling some top prospects he faced, including Colorado’s Nate Solder. He’s also tested well in workouts, giving every indication that he’s the complete package. Washington needs that type of player at defensive end.

11. New England Patriots (trade-up with Houston Texans): Alabama wide receiver Julio Jones

After trading future Hall of Fame wide receiver Randy Moss at the beginning of last season, the Patriots limited quarterback Tom Brady’s options on the outside. Jones is rated by most as the second-best receiver in this draft, and some believe he’s even better than A.J. Green, so Patriots head coach Bill Belichick gets excited and makes a move up six spots to grab the Crimson Tide dynamic talent.

Jones has the playmaking ability to fill Moss’s void and open things up on the inside for slot receivers Wes Welker and Justin Edelman and tight ends Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski.

12. Minnesota Vikings: North Carolina defensive end Robert Quinn

Stud defensive end Jared Allen has collected 40 sacks in his three years with the Vikings, so the trade Minnesota made with the Kansas City Chiefs prior to the 2008 draft has paid off. Ray Edwards has been a solid complement to Allen at the other defensive end spot over the last three seasons, posting 21.5 sacks during that time, but Minnesota could use another pass-rushing threat.

Quinn probably would go much higher in this draft if he hadn’t been suspended by the NCAA last season. In 2009 he had 11 sacks and 19 tackles in the backfield, and he possesses a wide array of skills that make him quite a scary presence for opposing offensive linemen. By grabbing the 6-4, 270-pound Quinn here, new head coach Leslie Frazier could get creative in using the rookie in certain packages with Allen, Edwards, and dominant defensive tackle Kevin Williams.

13. Detroit Lions: USC offensive tackle Tyron Smith

Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford looked excellent last year—in the three games he played. In addition to the 13 games he missed due to injury last season, Stafford also sat out another six in 2009. So, it’s clear that Detroit needs to protect its franchise quarterback better.

Smith is considered the most athletic offensive tackle in this draft, and after weighing in at 307 pounds at the NFL combine a few weeks ago, he showed he’s able to compete at the proper weight, as he was among the most impressive prospects at his position in the drills. Although he played right tackle for the Trojans, many feel Smith would be able to excel in protecting the quarterback’s blind side. The Lions need the type of versatility and athleticism Smith can bring to their offensive line.

14. Dallas Cowboys (trade-down with St. Louis Rams): Wisconsin defensive end J.J. Watt

Owner/general manager Jerry Jones is thrilled that he was able to move down to this pick and still be able to select Watt, who’s one of the top five defensive linemen in this draft. The Cowboys are loaded with talent on their defense, but the defensive end position is in need of a huge upgrade.

Watt is the lunchpail type that can do the dirty work and help outside linebackers DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer make the big plays. Watt is also capable of teaming up with nose tackle Jay Ratliff to stuff the run.

15. Miami Dolphins: Alabama running back Mark Ingram

With Ronnie Brown uncertain to return, head coach Tony Sparano needs a workhorse ball carrier in his power offense. Ingram is the best running back in this draft, and he has the ability to carry the ball 20-25 times a game. In addition, Ingram has drawn comparisons to Emmitt Smith. The 2009 Heisman Trophy winner will most likely be an offensive rookie of the year candidate in 2011.

16. Jacksonville Jaguars: Purdue defensive end Ryan Kerrigan

The Jaguars shocked everyone when they took Cal defensive tackle Tyson Alualu 10^th overall in last year’s draft. The pick was deemed a reach, but it turned out nicely, as Alualu had a very good rookie season. This year they play it safe by selecting Kerrigan.

In 2008 head coach Jack Del Rio thought he shored up his pass-rush when Jacksonville selected defensive ends Derrick Harvey and Quentin Groves in the first and second rounds. They turned out to be huge busts, however, leading to such a gaping hole at the position. Kerrigan is a very reliable player who has the ability to put pressure on the opposing quarterback and come up big in clutch situations. That’s vital in a division that has been ruled by Peyton Manning for the last 10 years.

17. Houston Texans (trade-down with New England Patriots): Missouri defensive end Aldon Smith

After hiring Wade Phillips to take over at defensive coordinator, the Texans are switching to a 3-4 scheme. It’s a questionable move, as Houston’s best players on defense (Mario Williams, DeMeco Ryans, and Brian Cushing) are better-suited for a 4-3 scheme. Nevertheless, the Texans need to add more talent on the defensive side of the ball, and the best player available at this point is Smith.

Although he struggled through injuries last year, in which posted just 5.5 sacks, Smith was a monster when healthy. With pretty much no options at outside linebacker currently on the Texans’ roster, Smith is the type of player that could make an immediate impact rushing off the edge.

18. San Diego Chargers: Wisconsin offensive tackle Gabe Carimi

The Chargers’ offensive line has been one of the weakest in the NFL over the last few years. It just hasn’t been that noticeable because quarterback Philip Rivers is outstanding in evading rushers. Current right tackle Jeromy Clary is an overachiever who should really be a backup, and the Chargers have waited too long to upgrade the position.

Carimi is the ideal prospect to step in right away and take Clary’s job. The Wisconsin product is a mauler as a run-blocker, which will be helpful to a team that hasn’t had a 1,000-yard rusher since the 2008 season.

19. New York Giants: Boston College offensive tackle Anthony Castonzo

William Beatty hasn’t exactly shown he has the ability or strength to be a starting offensive tackle on either the left or right side of the line for the Giants. Meanwhile, current starting left tackle David Diehl is coming off a miserable season, and many believe he should be moved inside to guard. So, there’s an opening at left tackle, and Castonzo is the best man for the job.

The Boston College connection once again comes through for head coach Tom Coughlin. Castonzo will be counted on to be the franchise left tackle the Giants haven’t had for a very long time.

20. Chicago Bears (trade-up with Tampa Bay Buccaneers): Colorado offensive tackle Nate Solder

Quarterback Jay Cutler needs better protection, as he’s been running for his life over the last two seasons in Chicago, so the Bears make a move up to get the last remaining sure-fire first-round offensive tackle.

Solder, a former tight end, is a work in progress, but his size (6-8, 314 pounds ) and quick feet make many believe that he has the most upside of all the offensive tackles in this draft. The Bears made the NFC Championship game last season with a weak offensive line, so imagine what they could do if they’re able to solidify the unit.

21. Kansas City Chiefs: Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Phil Taylor

With safety Eric Berry, wide receiver/returner Dexter McCluster, cornerback Javier Arenas, and tight end Tony Moeaki, the Chiefs had an outstanding draft last year, so the number of holes on the team was reduced by a nice margin. Now it’s time to strengthen the defensive line by getting a stud nose tackle.

After winning the division last year for the first time since 2003, the Chiefs must be powerful up front, what with the strong running backs (Darren McFadden, Michael Bush, Ryan Mathews, Knowshon Moreno) in the AFC West. Taylor has the proper size and strength to play in the middle between former first-round picks Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson.

22. Washington Redskins (trade-up with Indianapolis Colts): Temple defensive tackle Muhammad Wilkerson

The Redskins have never been shy about making moves to get the players they desire, so they have no problem moving up here to get Wilkerson, who’s rising up the draft boards rapidly, and keeping him away from the rival Philadelphia Eagles.

By double-dipping on defensive linemen, Washington sets itself up nicely for the future and makes it easier to move on from the Albert Haynesworth disaster. At 6-5, 315 pounds Wilkerson could play either end or tackle on the defensive line, and his college statistics show that he has the ability to be an impact player.

23. Philadelphia Eagles: Colorado cornerback Jimmy Smith

The Eagles wanted Wilkerson, but they’ll settle for Smith, who’s ranked by most as the third-best cornerback in this draft. Although there are some character concerns with Smith, adding him to a defensive backfield that has Asante Samuel and Nate Allen is worth the risk.

Smith is a dominant cover corner opposing quarterbacks shied away from throwing towards in college. That will change in the NFL, so Smith will have more opportunities to collect interceptions.

24. New Orleans Saints: Ohio State defensive end Cameron Heyward

After watching Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch complete perhaps the greatest run in NFL history against New Orleans the Wild-Card round last January, it’s easy to see that the Saints need to improve their defensive line. Heyward, a defensive end who could also move inside to tackle in certain situations, would be a nice addition.

Heyward struggled through injuries during his somewhat disappointing senior season, but he’s been known to step up in the biggest games, as evidenced with his dominant performances in the 2010 Rose Bowl and 2011 Sugar Bowl.

25. Seattle Seahawks: Illinois defensive tackle Corey Liuget

Head coach Pete Carroll won national championships at USC with defensive lines that were loaded with talent. The Seahawks have some talent on the defensive line, but they need an impact player.

Liuget, who one NFL defensive line coach has rated as the second-best defensive tackle, could be that impact player Seattle needs to take that next step towards building a championship-caliber defense.

26. Baltimore Ravens: Maryland wide receiver Torrey Smith

If free agency finally begins, the Ravens will be down to just Anquan Boldin when it comes to reliable wide receivers for quarterback Joe Flacco. Smith is one of the least known first-round prospects in this draft, but he has the athleticism, hands, and production to back it up.

The Ravens need to do a better job stretching the field and opening up the passing game. Smith is the ideal man to help them do just that.

27. Atlanta Falcons: Georgia defensive end Justin Houston

Defensive end Kroy Biermann has proven to be a reliable bookend to Jonathan Abraham, but the Falcons need to grab a dominant pass-rusher for the future. In addition to his stellar college career at Georgia, Houston has impressed many with his pre-draft workouts.

Although there are rumors that Atlanta wants to trade up for A.J. Green to fill the hole at wide receiver, moving up that far is just too costly for general manager Tom Dmitroff. Picking Houston here would add another young talent to a defense that already has emerging stars in linebackers Curtis Lofton and Sean Weatherspoon, and defensive backs William Moore and Brent Grimes.

28. New England Patriots: Florida guard Mike Pouncey

Head coach Bill Belichick loves players from the University of Florida, and Pouncey can fill the void that the retired Stephen Neal has left. Pouncey’s twin brother, Maurkice, had an outstanding rookie season with the Steelers in 2010. Most experts say Mike isn’t as gifted as Maurkice, but if Mike can have almost as impressive of a rookie season for the Patriots, this pick will be a success.

29. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (trade-down with Chicago Bears): Iowa defensive end Adrian Clayborn

The Bucs have a very nice nucleus of young players, especially at defensive tackle. Now it’s time for them to add a pass-rusher on the outside.

Clayborn has a lot of issues, including character concerns and the Erb’s Palsy condition in his right arm, but if he reaches his potential in Pewter, Tampa Bay will be well on its way to once again possessing a dominant defense.

30. Cincinnati Bengals (trade-up with New York Jets): Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett

Fearing that some other team will jump up and grab Mallett, the Bengals make a trade with the Jets to get the rifle-armed quarterback from Arkansas. With Carson Palmer threatening to retire, in addition to his being on the back end of his career, Cincinnati makes the necessary move to get its quarterback of the future.

Mallett has received some vicious criticism, none of which has had to do with how well he throws the football. Toss all the rumors of drug abuse out, and he probably goes #1 overall to the Panthers, as he is clearly the best passer in this entire draft.

31. Pittsburgh Steelers: Miami cornerback Brandon Harris

The Steelers’ secondary is getting old, and it was thrashed in the Super Bowl by the Packers. With that in mind, it’s now time for Pittsburgh to add some young talent to the defensive backfield.

Harris isn’t a playmaker, but he’s proven to be reliable in coverage, limiting big plays.

32. Green Bay Packers: Mike Leshoure

Coming off a Super Bowl triumph with a below-average running game, Green Bay needs to balance its offense out, as defenses around the NFL are eventually going to come up with ways to contain Aaron Rodgers and the passing attack—at least on occasion.

Leshoure is the full-time feature back the Packers could incorporate into an unstoppable offense.

Second Round

33. Houston Texans (pick acquired from first-round trade with New England Patriots): Arizona defensive end Brooks Reed

34. Buffalo Bills: Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder

35. New York Jets (trade-down with Cincinnati Bengals): UCLA outside linebacker Akeem Ayers

36. Denver Broncos: UCLA safety Rahim Moore

37. Cleveland Browns: Texas cornerback Aaron Williams

38. Arizona Cardinals: Villanova offensive tackle Benjamin Ijalana

39. Tennessee Titans: Oregon State defensive tackle Stephen Paea

40. Dallas Cowboys: Mississippi State offensive tackle Derek Sherrod

41. Indianapolis Colts (trade-down with Washington Redskins): Penn State center/guard Stefen Wisniewski

42. Houston Texans: Virginia cornerback Ras-I Dowling

43. Minnesota Vikings: Washington quarterback Jake Locker

44. Detroit Lions: Illinois linebacker Martez Wilson

45. San Francisco 49ers: TCU quarterback Andy Dalton

46. Denver Broncos: New Mexico State cornerback Davon House

47. Dallas Cowboys (pick acquired from first-round trade with St. Louis Rams): Oklahoma safety Quinton Carter

48. Oakland Raiders: Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick

49. Jacksonville Jaguars: Pitt wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin

50. San Diego Chargers: Iowa defensive tackle Christian Ballard

51. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: TCU offensive tackle/guard Marcus Cannon

52. New York Giants: North Carolina linebacker Bruce Carter

53. Indianapolis Colts: Iowa safety Tyler Sash

54. Philadelphia Eagles: North Carolina defensive tackle Marvin Austin

55. Kansas City Chiefs: Texas defensive end Sam Acho

56. New Orleans Saints: Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams

57. Seattle Seahawks: Florida State guard Rodney Young

58. Baltimore Ravens: Boise State wide receiver Titus Young

59. Atlanta Falcons: Notre Dame tight end Kyle Rudolph

60. New England Patriots: Kansas State running back Daniel Thomas

61. San Diego Chargers: Pitt defensive end Jabaal Sheard

62. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (picked acquired from first-round trade with Bears): Clemson safety DeAndre McDaniel

63. Pittsburgh Steelers: Baylor guard Danny Watkins

64. Green Bay Packers: Miami wide receiver Leornard Hankerson

Inside The War Room: Cincinnati Bengals

In a surprise move, the Bengals take OLB Von Miller. I think that the Bengals will pick up Donovan McNabb. Jay Gruden will try to milk an efficient season from him in his WCO, much like his brother did with supposedly "washed-up" vets like Rich Gannon & Jeff Garcia. With Leon Hall, Jonathan Joseph, Pacman Jones, Brandon Ghee and Morgan Trent at CB, Peterson would be a luxury pick. A.J. Green & Julio Jones are options, but Simpson, Caldwell & Shipley played well late in the season and CIN would like to return to the physical, ball-control offense/ aggressive defense formula that brought them the AFC North title in 2009. A pass-rusher is the top priority. Bowers & Fairley are too risky here, and CIN seems to like the young group of Dunlap/Sims/Atkins/M. Johnson along the D-line. Who better than Miller, the nation's sack leader over the last two seasons, to improve the Bengals' paltry sack total? He has the versatility to play SLB in Mike Zimmer's flexing scheme & would allow Maualuga to slide over to his natural MLB spot, thus improving the pass rush AND the run D in one fell swoop. CIN loves drafting LBs and Miller is arguably the "safest" pick on the board. Marvin Lewis has used up his nine lives in Cincy and can't afford to miss on this pick. An immediate, high-level contributor is needed. Look for the Bengals to target Christian Ponder or Andy Dalton in the 2nd round to groom behind the stopgap QB while the Palmer Saga unfolds.
Many think that BUF could opt for Miller at #3 because Chan Gailey coached him at the Senior Bowl. Well, guess who the coach on the opposing sideline was at the Senior Bowl. Marvin Lewis.

If Gabbert gets by Buffalo, I think the Bengals grab him. He is the right fit for Jay Gruden's West Coast offense and I think regardless of whether Palmer was coming back or not, I think they would have drafted a QB. Palmer has been in decline for several years now

Falcons Willing to Trade Up to Aquire A.J. Green

2011-03-24T14:23:00.002-04:00

According to Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Atlanta Falcons would be willing to trade up if A.J. Green falls to the sixth spot when the Cleveland Browns make their selection. There has been rumors swirling that the Browns were already seeking a trade partner in order to move back from the 6th pick, but this situation brings some irony with it as it is also widely believed that if A.J. Green fell to the Browns or if Julio Jones was available that Browns GM Mike Holmgren would be compelled to take them.

The Falcons most glaring need this off-season is a top flight compliment to Roddy White in their receiving core. The addition of A.J. Green, considered by a number of scouts to be one of the best wide receiver prospects to come out in quite some time, would add another weapon to an already potent offense. A wide receiving core including Roddy White, A.J. Green, and Tony Gonzalez, paired with a punishing rushing attack headed by Michael Turner and commanded by one of the most talented young quarterbacks in the game with Matt Ryan, the sky would be the limit as the Falcons make a push to emerge as the elite team in the NFC. Falcons fans will closely monitor the situation over the next month in hope that a homegrown talent such as Green could just be the missing link to a possible run at the Super Bowl this upcoming season.

Cardinals in Hot Pursuit of Gabbert

2011-03-24T13:06:00.001-04:00

The Cardinals have stepped up their efforts in their pursuit of Blaine Gabbert to be their next franchise quarterback. It has been reported by multiple sources that Cardinals ownership took Gabbert to dinner Tuesday night, and were on hand as the Cardinals coaching staff held a private workout for him Wednesday afternoon. There has been a good amount of speculation this off-season that the Cardinals would pursue a veteran quarterback such as Ravens backup and former Rams quarterback Marc Bulger, but with the lockout and subsequent postponement of free agency, the Cardinals appear to be pursuing different angles. The Cardinals could still sign Bulger once free agency begins, as he could re-establish his career as a starting quarterback for a season while Gabbert develops with Gabbert ultimately taking the reigns. Of course, this could all be moot, as Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey has spoken very highly of Gabbert and could be eying him with the 3rd overall pick as they already have the veteran stop gap quarterback already in place. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next month as things appear to be heating up.

I guess I'll kick off the festivities...With the 3rd pick, the Buffalo Bills select Cam Newton, QB, Auburn. I don't think that Newton's skill set translates well to the pro game and there are the well-chronicled red flags, but his raw talent will prove too tantalizing for the QB-hungry teams in the top 10 to ignore. BUF might be a good situation for him, as his mobility and arm strength make him a good fit in Gailey's scheme. Newton would have the ideal mentor in Harvard-grad Ryan Fitzpatrick, who could hold down the fort for a season or two while Newton learns the ropes. In a division with NE and NYJ clearly ahead of the pack and with a frustrated fanbase in need of some hope , the Bills should take a chance on greatness. Newton's presence in Western NY would also be a financial boon for their depressed BUF economy.

Here i think the buffalo bills do the usual and takes somebody that shocks everyone. I think they will take A.j Green, and even though there not a specific need at WR, He could be one of the most dangerous players in the draft and allow the bills to look at ryan mallet in the 2nd. this would give the bills a chance of have a prolific passing game in the very near future and have a explosive offense which fits the bills head coaches schemes.

If he's still available its gunna be patrick peterson. He's the best player in the draft by far and the bills would be lucky to have him roaming the secondary.

Von Miller. The 3-4 defense needs a great pass rusher and the Bills don't have one. Maybin sucks

Denver Broncos: Inside The War Room

And with the #2 Overall Pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select...

You are the GM...Make the pick

CONSENSUS PICK: Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama

Best Arguments:

Anon said...
They WILL take Marcell Dareus because he is the only logical option, unless someone appears in the next few days. John Fox would rather take a DE, but Da'Quan Bowers has knee problems, and presents too big of a risk. Nick Fairley would demolish the team unity that they set up through last years draft (Tim Tebow). They will eye Green, but Brandon Llyod did a great job at No. 1 receiver this year (I had him on my fantasy team) so reciever isnt a immediate need. Peterson wont be a logical option as they just signed Champ Bailey, and are paying premium money for him. They way i see things, the two biggest concerns for the Broncos are DL and S. No one is going to put Peterson at saftey, so DL will be addressed, and Dareus is the only option that works for them.

Joker said...
The Broncos would be foolish to pass up on Peterson. He is the next Champ Bailey. Imagine those 2 guys on the same field

Has to be Marcell Dareus. THey have to take the best defensive lineman available and he is tthe one

Anonymous said...
I have Dareus going to Carolina so I have to put somebody else in for Denver. Its tough but I'll give them Peterson because he looks like the next great cornerback. Yeah the Broncos have Bailey but he's not going to last forever and who else do they have at cornerback. Bailey could be Peterson's mentor and after spending a first on a wide receiver last year I don't see them doing it again with Green.

Marcell Dareus. A lot of people have Nick Fairley or Da’Quan Bowers here and I can understand that but I just don’t agree with it. John Fox has said that there are many parallels between his current Broncos team and the Panthers team he took to the Super Bowl. That’s true is some ways but one player that really helped them get there was Julius Peppers and Coach Fox has a history of coaching up defensive ends to be superstars. The Broncos current defensive ends are Kevin Vickerson and Justin Bannan who combined for three sacks this season. Their starting tackle was the 36 year old Jamal Williams who collected a grand total of two sacks. Yeah, the Broncos need a serious overhaul on the d-line. Dareus has seen his stock sky rocket in the past month mostly due to his great combine where he, in most people’s eyes, overtook Nick Fairley and Da’Quan Bowers for the best defensive line prospect in this year’s. The one thing about Dareus that makes him valuable and makes me such a huge fan of him is the fact that he can play both defensive tackle and defensive end at a high level. Whoever drafts him will get Albert Haynesworth (before he started acting like he was in the third grade) and Julius Peppers in one player. Dareus,, in my opinion, is a better defensive tackle than end mostly due to his size and strength but he also has decent speed that he uses with a great use of hands when playing end. This guy is John Fox’s dream and I just cannot see him falling out of the top three after a fantastic combine and pro day

Ditto. Gabbert cemented it with his Pro day performance. The leaked "Carolina likes Newton" rumors are an obvious attempt to drum up trade interest for this pick.

Marcell Dareus. The Panthers should really give Clausen one more year rather than reach for a qb

Anonymous said...
Cam Newton. He will do more than sit on the bench for a year. He wont start a single game (but I said that about Clausen too...) but they are looking for the Tebow effect, a team catalyst who will unite the team from the troubles that they had together (Clausen vs. Steve Smith) and will sell tickets and jerseys because of his presence. Also, like Tebow, could be used in special packages and help the goal line troubles that the panthers had last season. And he is a pick for the future. He has potential, and if matched with the correct offence, could be a Vick style player, although we found out that Vick wasnt invincible at the end of the season. He would be the perfect pick for the bills, as Chan Gailey loves mobile QBs, he wont make it to the 3rd overall pick.

Marcell Dareus. Ron Rivera wants to build his defense into champions. Put Dareus at defensive tackle in front of Beason and let the linebacker run wild. The only quarterback worth taking #1 overall was Andrew Luck.

Trades and Free Agency Could Continue Despite Impending Lockout

2011-03-11T09:42:00.005-05:00

With yet another snag in the current CBA negotiations and an NFL lockout on the horizon, much attention has been focused on the NFL Draft as the only refuge and source of action this off-season. The impending lockout has put more emphasis and pressure on GM’s to recruit talent and to draft more based on need because of free agency being put on hold for the significant future. This has been most taxing on the multiple teams that need to address the quarterback position, and as a result, has drawn significant attention to an otherwise weak quarterback class.

Well, have no fear, because it appears that there is still a glimmer of hope that free agency and the trade market may just be permitted after all. According to Sports Illustrated writer Peter King, citing sources close to the labor negotiations, it appears that trades and free agency could be allowed as early as late April, despite having no new collective bargaining agreement. If the NFL Players Association “Decertifies”, which is almost certain at this point, and the owners institute a lockout, the Players Association will seek an injunction that would allow the 2011 off-season to continue on as scheduled, with both free agency and trading being permitted. This injunction would be brought to Judge David S. Doty, who has weighed heavily toward pro-labor during his tenure. The NFL owners would almost certainly appeal the decision, but the appeal process could take some time, and free agency and trading might still be permitted while the process takes its course.

This could completely shake up the NFL Draft, as it would now allow teams to address their needs on the peripheral, and not solely through the draft. Much discussed players such as Kevin Kolb, Donovan McNabb, and possible free agents such as D’Angelo Williams and Mark Bulger could fill several voids throughout the league, completely altering the landscape of teams’ draftboards, and subsequently, a multitude of mock drafts. More importantly, this would open up opportunities for prospects to fall to other teams that may have otherwise been drafted already. The next month or so should be very exciting to follow, so be sure to stay tuned to realtalkfantasysports.blogspot.com for the latest news, and updates as your source for the 2011 NFL Draft.

Jets Projected Picks Rounds 1-7

2011-03-09T23:06:00.007-05:00

After making the AFC Championship game in each of the last two seasons, it’s time for the New York Jets to take the next step and reach the Super Bowl. Gang Green is in position to win now, but in order to remain championship contenders for many years to come general manager Mike Tannenbaum and head coach Rex Ryan must continue to have success in restocking the roster through the draft. After acquiring cornerback Antonio Cromartie from the San Diego Chargers last year, the Jets don’t have a second-round pick this April, so they aren’t likely to trade up in the first round. The following is a 1-7 round mock draft of projected Jets selections.

Round 1: Justin Houston, outside linebacker, Georgia

The Jets haven’t had a dominant pass-rusher in their defense since John Abraham left after the 2005 season. In order to be a complete defense, Gang Green will at the very least need a consistent pass-rushing threat who could give the team 10-15 sacks a season. At 6-3, 270 pounds Houston appears to be that type of player.

In 2010 Houston racked up 10 sacks and 18 tackles in the backfield while playing outside linebacker and defensive end in Georgia’s system. He also recorded an interception.

Ryan loves versatile talents, and Houston has shown he can be effective in a three-point stance at defensive end or standing up as a linebacker. The Georgia Bulldog product has also shown he has the athleticism to drop into coverage and disrupt the opposing quarterback’s passing lanes.

Houston turned out to be a pleasant surprise in many ways for the scouts at the NFL Combine a couple weeks ago. Originally thought of as an undersized defensive end, he weighed in at a solid 270 pounds, and wowed scouts with his big hands (10 ⅞ inches), long arms (34 ½ inches), and wide wingspan (81⅝). Additionally, he displayed an impressive array of skills by posting a 36 ½ inch vertical jump, a 10-5 broad jump, and a 4.68 second 40-yard dash.

Last season the Jets got only a combined 17 sacks from the trio of Calvin Pace, Jason Taylor, and Bryan Thomas. With the release of Taylor last week, it would be wise of Tannenbaum and Ryan to fill that hole with a young talent such as Houston.

Justin Houston highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kR0L2RVId90

Round 3: DeAndre McDaniel, safety, Clemson

Make no mistake about it, McDaniel is a first-round talent. At 6-1, 205 pounds he is a violent hitter in the secondary who strikes fear into receivers when they cross into his territory. In addition, McDaniel has proven to be a ballhawk, as evidenced with his eight interceptions during the 2009 season and four picks in 2010. Put it all together, and one can say McDaniel is the complete package at safety.

So why are most mock drafts projecting the Clemson safety to go in Round 3 or 4? Well, unfortunately, McDaniel has a terrible off-the-field incident on his record.

In June 2008 McDaniel was arrested for assault and battery. According to published reports, he choked his girlfriend, punched her in the head and chest, and threw her down a flight of stairs. Suffice it to say, an incident such as that could lead to a prospect being taken out of consideration completely.

With that said, the Jets aren’t exactly known as a self-righteously pious organization, and taking a chance on McDaniel late in Round 3 could really pay off in their quest for a Super Bowl title. As of right now Eric Smith, who started at strong safety last year, isn’t a given to return next season. McDaniel, who’s a better fit at strong safety, would be an ideal replacement.

DeAndre McDaniel highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpAk11N3VkM

Round 4: John Moffitt, guard, Wisconsin

With D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold, and Brandon Moore, the Jets’ offensive line is in relatively good shape, but right tackle Damien Woody was just released, leaving the 29-year-old Wayne Hunter, who really should be a backup. After watching Hunter struggle against edge rushers while filling in for an injured Woody last January, the Jets have indicated that Vladimir Ducasse will be moving back to offensive tackle. In that case, expect Ducasse to start at right tackle next year, which means there will be an opening for a young left guard to compete with Matt Slauson, and Moffitt is the ideal candidate.

Moffitt was a four-year starter and team captain at Wisconsin. He was named an All-American in 2010 and made First-Team All-Big Ten in 2009 and 2010. At 6-5, 323 pounds he has the mean streak and warrior mentality most coaches desire in their interior linemen, as he relishes the opportunity to take on a tough battle against the man in front of him.

There is a possibility Moffitt won’t be available this late, but there are plenty of mocks projecting him to go in Round 4. If he’s still available at the Jets’ pick, they shouldn’t hesitate to write Moffitt’s name on the card and run it up to the podium.

John Moffitt highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZ8HUbaZ8Ps

Round 5: Jerrell Powe, nose tackle, Mississippi

With the release of Kris Jenkins last week, and with Sione Pouha just turning 32 last month, the Jets are in need of more depth at nose tackle. At 6-2, 340 pounds Powe is the right man to pick in Round 5.

Powe was one of the most highly-touted defensive linemen in the nation as a high school player. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t have the grades to qualify academically for a Division I scholarship, which resulted in him getting off to a late start in major college football. At 24 years old, he’s one of the oldest prospects in the draft.

There’s no denying that Powe is a big-time talent who’s flying under the radar right now, and the Jets should take advantage if the space-eater is still on the board in Round 5. Although he posted just six sacks and 24 tackles in the backfield over three seasons with the Rebels, he possesses the size, strength, and technique necessary to stand his ground and tie up multiple blockers. In that regard, he’d be a great friend to inside linebackers David Harris and Bart Scott.

Powe has had trouble managing his weight, as he was once close to 400 pounds. If anyone understands that dilemma, however, it’s Ryan, and there’s little doubt that the Jets head coach is the ideal mentor for a player such as Powe.

Round 6: Marcus Gilchrist, cornerback/safety, Clemson

With some stating that Cromartie won’t be returning to the Jets next season, Tannenbaum and Ryan would be wise to select Gilchrist in the sixth round.

Gilchrist isn’t nearly the talent that his Clemson teammate McDaniel is, but he’s a versatile player who can line up at cornerback or safety.

Marcus Gilchrist highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LltvYYNlgoA

Round 7: Damien Berry, running back, Miami

Berry split time with multiple runners for the Hurricanes, so he had just 283 carries in his college career. He made the most of it, however, by rushing for 1,515 yards, a 5.4 average, and 13 touchdowns. At 6-0, 215 pounds he’s a tough runner on the inside who isn’t easy to bring down. LaDainian Tomlinson won’t be around much longer, so finding a potential gem at running back to be a future complement to Shonn Greene would be an excellent way to finish off the draft.

Damien Berry highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Idn0BQS85Cc

The Return Of Tiki Barber

2011-03-08T15:41:00.001-05:00

In an attempt to remain relevant following his failed attempt at a television career, it appears that Tiki Barber has announced that he wishes to return to the National Football League. At age 35, and in a year that has the potential to be filled with plenty of free agent running backs such as D'Angelo Williams, Joseph Addai, Ronnie Brown, and possibly even Giants running back Ahmad Bradshaw, it seems rather unusual that Tiki Barber would announce his return to football. To his credit, nearly 5 full years removed from football has more than likely kept his legs fresh, and his early retirement spared him the relentless punishment that most running backs endure, but it is hard to believe that after 5 years off from football he will be able to jump right back in and play at a high level. Perhaps the New England Patriots are seeking yet another past their prime running back to add to their collection, and hey, there's always the Raiders, but chances are, Tiki's only real shot at playing football this year would be if he re-united with his old buddy Jim Fassel and played for the Las Vegas Locos in the UFL.

Giants Projected Picks Rounds 1-7

2011-03-07T15:46:00.009-05:00

GIANTS Projected Draft Picks

Round 1: Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College

HT: 6' 7" WT: 311lbs

There is no question that the Giants need to address their aging offensive line. Castonzo is one of the most athletic offensive linemen in the draft, but still possesses the strength, footwork, and aggressiveness to be an effective run blocker. He is a smart player and should be able to step in right away and make an impact.

Round 2: Bruce Carter, OLB, North Carolina

HT: 6' 2" WT: 241lbs

The Giants have had quite a bit of luck when drafting players out of North Carolina. (Lawrence Taylor, Hakeem Nicks) Carter tore his ACL toward the end of the college season, but before he did, he was one of five finalists for the Butkus Award. Carter started virtually every game in his college career, and has an interception for a TD in each of the last two seasons. He is aggressive, explosive, and versatile. He can cover, stuff the run, rush the quarterback, and even block kicks. (6 blocked punts and 1 blocked field goal) If he hadn't torn his ACL, he very likely would have been a top 20 pick. Carter could end up being a huge steal, and will fill a major void at the OLB position that the Giants have failed to effectively address for several years.

Round 3: Daniel Thomas, RB, Kansas St.
HT: 6' 0" WT: 230lbs

With Brandon Jacobs re-structuring his contract and no guarantee that Ahmad Bradshaw will be back with the Giants, the running back position must be addressed. Thomas is a big physical running back who fits the build of the long lineage of successful Giants running backs. Not only does he possess the size and physical strength, but he has the explosiveness and shiftiness to be an every down back. A lingering hamstring injury has kept him from performing in the Senior Bowl and scouting combine, but should allow him to drop down to the 3rd round, despite being the 3rd ranked running back on many analysts' draft boards. If so, the Giants must take advantage as he could end up being the most productive running back in this draft.

Round 4: Greg Jones, MLB, Michigan St.
HT: 6' 0" WT: 242lbs

Greg Jones would have been as high as the Giants 2nd round pick if he had put up better numbers at the combine. His college production is staggering, as a 4 year starter at Michigan St., Jones finished in the top 5 in tackles in college football the last 3 seasons, and led the entire nation in 2009 as a junior. His stock has also dropped because he is considered undersized at 6' 0" but he is merely an inch shorter and 8 lbs lighter than Ray Lewis, who is one of the greatest MLB's to play the game. If his statistical production is any indication of the caliber of player he is, (which last I checked, it should be) Jones could be a huge steal this late in the draft, and could compete with Jonathon Goff for the starting MLB position next year.

Round 5: (Traded to Vikings)

Round 6: Jake Kirkpatrick, C, TCU
HT: 6' 2" WT: 301lbs

The Giants need to add depth at the center position with both Rich Seubert and Shaun O'Hara battling injuries. Kirkpatrick was one of the top centers in college football, anchoring a line that produced an average of 456 yards per game, good enough for 7th overall in college football last season. Kirkpatrick was one of the most notable snubs at the combine, which may drop his draft stock enough for the Giants to grab him in the 6th round.

Round 7: Chas Henry, P, Florida
HT: 6' 3" WT: 219lbs

After watching the inconsistency of the Giants' punting game this season dissolve it's playoff hopes, it would be a bonus to end up with the best punter in college football last year with their last pick in the draft. Cut ties with the inconsistent, often flustered Matt Dodge, and start fresh with a 7th round pick that has a legitimate shot of actually making the squad.

OTHER PLAYERS TO CONSIDER:

Kris O'Dowd, C, USC (4th round)
Deunta Williams, S, North Carolina (4th round)
Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi St. (1st round)
Gabe Carini, OT, Wisconsin (1st round)
Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama (1st round)
Chimdi Chekwa, CB, Ohio St. (3rd round)
Quan Sturdivant, MLB, North Carolina (3rd round)

This Year's Draft Is the Key to the Giants Future

2011-03-03T20:36:00.008-05:00

Without a doubt, this years draft can be make or break for the New York Giants. Looking back to all the great Giant teams of the past, they were all built from successful drafts. The Parcells teams of the 80's were virtually built from scratch with legendary players such as: Lawrence Taylor, Joe Morris, Carl Banks, Mark Collins, Mark Bavaro, Maurice Carthon, Leonard Marshall, Bart Oates, and the list goes on and on. It was this core of young talent who were added to the existing veterans such as Phil Simms, George Martin and Harry Carson to produce the most dominant Giants team ever assembled.

Lawrence Taylor Picture Source: ESPN

By 1990, the draft class from the early to mid 80's became the core veterans, and George Young and Bill Parcells had added a couple more vital pieces through the draft such as Rodney Hampton, Jumbo Elliot, Doug Riesenburg, Dave Meggett, Stephen Baker and Mark Ingram. This ultimately put them over the top during their improbable run that culminated in one of the most dramatic super bowl victories in NFL history against the Buffalo Bills.

The 2000 team that made their own improbable run to the Super Bowl was also built through the draft. It was draftees such as Tiki Barber, Amani Toomer, Jesse Armstead, Michael Strahan and Jason Sehorn that made up the core of that team.

Finally, most recently in 2007, the Giants draft class going into that season is renowned for the significant contributions that each of them made during the Giants super bowl run, and epic upset in the super bowl of the undefeated Patriots. Aaron Ross, Steve Smith, Kevin Boss and Ahmad Bradshaw all played integral roles and were all part of the 2007 draft class. Add super bowl MVP Eli Manning to the mix, as well as Brandon Jacobs, Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora, Chris Snee, and David Diehl, as well as veteran draftees such as Toomer and Strahan, and you have the nucleus of yet another title.

Now, once again, it is the moment of truth. Can Jerry Reese put together a draft that will produce a future championship? After the elite draft class of 2007, Reese followed up with an almost equally strong draft producing such players as Kenny Phillips, Terrell Thomas, Mario Manningham, and Jonathan Goff at the end of the 5th round which is impressive value considering he was a relatively productive starter this past season. It is from the core of young draft talent leading up to the 2007 super bowl, combined with the talent of the 2007 and 2008 drafts that Reese must reinforce this year. The last two drafts have produced little outside of Hakeem Nicks, and many of the pieces of the former classes have began to decline in their abilities. With the expiration of the CBA agreement and threat of a lockout putting a hold on free agency, the 2011 NFL Draft has become a vital tool for building a super bowl contender this off-season.

I will be posting my projected picks rounds 1-7 for the Giants over the next couple of days. Check back in and feel free to post some of your suggestions for this years' draft.

Jets need a dominant defensive player up front

2011-03-03T20:05:00.011-05:00

Since Mike Tannenbaum was promoted to general manager of the New York Jets in 2006, the team has added a ton of talent through the draft and free agency. Whether it’s been Eric Mangini or Rex Ryan as Gang Green’s head coach, Tannenbaum has made very shrewd draft picks, compiling a core group of players that includes franchise quarterback Mark Sanchez, a load of a running back in Shonn Greene, a pass-catching tight end in Dustin Keller, an impact inside linebacker in David Harris, a multi-faceted contributor in Brad Smith, and Pro Bowlers in cornerback Darelle Revis, left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson, and center Nick Mangold. Tannenbaum has also done an outstanding job with his free agent pickups and trade acquisitions, which have included cornerback Antonio Cromartie, inside linebacker Bart Scott, nose tackle Kris Jenkins, running backs LaDainian Tomlinson and Thomas Jones, and wide receivers Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes.

Tannenbaum has had his busts—Vernon Gholston, most notably—but there aren’t many general managers in the NFL today who can match what he’s supplied for his coaching staffs over a five-year period. As one goes down the list of players Tannenbaum has picked in the last five drafts, however, it’s difficult to not find it alarming that the balding, overweight general manager has selected just two defensive linemen—Gholston, who was supposed be the Jets’ DeMarcus Ware but failed miserably, and 2006 seventh-round choice Titus Adams, who never played a down for Gang Green.

With Revis, Cromartie, Dwight Lowery, and 2010 first-round pick Kyle Wilson, the Jets had perhaps the best group of cornerbacks last season. Ryan is one of the preeminent defensive schemers, and Harris and Scott form a formidable tandem at inside linebacker. Put it all together, and Gang Green had a defense that was among the elite in the NFL for the second straight year in 2010. Even so, there has been a missing element: dominance from the three down linemen and two outside linebackers. And with the release of Gholston, Jenkins, and Jason Taylor this week, and with free agent defensive end Shaun Ellis turning 34 in June, the Jets are now thin on the defensive line. The only starting defensive linemen currently under contract are nose tackle Sione Pouha and defensive end Mike DeVito, neither of whom is worth writing home about. Thus, the Jets are in a bad spot up front.

Ask any football coach who knows what he’s talking about, and he’ll tell you that the battle is won in the trenches. Of course a team needs a good quarterback to be a consistent winner, but if the best passer won a championship every year, Eli Manning and the New York Giants wouldn’t have been triumphant over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. With Sanchez, the Jets seem to be set at quarterback for years, and their offensive line is among the best in the NFL. Now it’s time to find some defensive players who can get after the opposing quarterback.

If free agency ever begins this offseason, there are a couple defensive linemen the Jets can grab, including Shaun Rogers and Marcus Spears. But the top priority for Gang Green should be to retain their own players, as Cromartie, Ellis, Edwards, and Holmes had their contracts run out after last season, and Brad Smith, starting strong safety Eric Smith, and kicker Nick Folk were hit with the worthless restricted free agent tenders on Wednesday. That leaves the draft as the best place for the Jets to address their needs.

Draft

The Jets don’t have a second-round pick this April, as they traded it away to the San Diego Chargers for Cromartie last year. So, it’s imperative that Tannenbaum hits on his first-round selection. Although Texas A&M’s Von Miller, Alabama’s Marcell Dareus, Purdue’s Ryan Kerrigan, North Carolina’s Robert Quinn, Cal’s Cameron Jordan, and Wisconsin’s J.J. Watt are all expected to go in the top 20, here are some defensive linemen and outside linebackers who may fall to the Jets at the 30^th overall pick:

Baylor nose tackle Phil Taylor

It wasn’t long ago that Taylor was considered a second- or third-round talent. But when a defensive lineman is 6-3 1/2, 337 pounds and possesses the ability, strength, and technique Taylor does, chances are he’s going to be a first-round pick. And just like that, in recent mock drafts Taylor has gone as early as the 18^th overall selection, to the San Diego Chargers.

According to Scott Wright’s NFL Draft Countdown, Taylor is “very strong, powerful and physical” and “does a terrific job of stuffing the run.” He is “stout at the point of attack and can anchor,” and is “able to take on and occupy multiple blockers.” He has “violent hands and uses them well,” and is “aggressive and plays with an edge.”

Taylor does have some character concerns, as he was dismissed from the Penn State Nittany Lions in 2008 after being involved in a fight at a frat party, forcing him to transfer to Baylor. Wright also mentions that Taylor is “not very fast, quick, agile or explosive” and he “doesn’t always play with proper leverage,” which can explain why he’s “awfully limited as a pass-rusher.”

http://www.draftcountdown.com/ScoutingReports/DT/Phil-Taylor.php

In 2010 Taylor had 62 tackles, seven of them coming in the backfield, and two sacks. As a guy who plays with swagger and a mean streak, one could say he’d be a perfect fit in Ryan’s defense.

Ohio State defensive end Cameron Heyward

Heyward was considered by many as a top-15 talent heading into last season. But as is the case with many highly-touted prospects going into their senior seasons with great expectations, Heyward didn’t live up to the hype. Previously thought of as an impact player from the defensive end position, Heyward posted just 3.5 sacks last fall, although he did have 13 tackles in the backfield. To be fair, however, he was bothered by an ankle injury most of the season, and after about a month of rest prior to the Sugar Bowl, he dominated the Arkansas Razorbacks by posting 3.5 tackles in the backfield, a sack, two quarterback hurries, and a pass breakup. Even so, his lack of production overall in 2010 has many believing he’ll go in the late first round, at the earliest.

At 6-5, 288 pounds the Ohio State defensive end was a four-year starter and team captain. He was named Second Team All-Big Ten in 2009 and First Team in 2010. He is the son of the late Craig “Ironhead” Heyward, a bruising running back who played 11 years in the NFL.

According to Wright, Heyward “will never be a dynamic sack artist…but [he] is an impressive physical specimen with the talent and intangibles to play in the NFL for a very long time. [He] profiles as a base end who can also move inside and play defensive tackle in the 4-3, but [his] best fit may come as a five technique in a 3-4. [He] is eerily similar in many ways to Tyson Jackson of the Kansas City Chiefs.”

Temple defensive tackle Muhammad Wilkerson

After being considered a second-round choice in most mock drafts during the month of February, some are now predicting that Wilkerson will be selected by the New England Patriots at pick #28, and ESPN’s Todd McShay says Wilkerson is one of the five most underrated prospects.

At 6-4, 315 pounds Wilkerson is a versatile defensive lineman many believe can play either end or nose tackle. In 2010 he had 70 tackles, 13 of them in the backfield, and 9.5 sacks, which was a nice follow-up to his 2009 season: 62 tackles, 10.5 of them for losses, and seven sacks. According to McShay, Wilkerson “looked nimble and athletic during position drills” at the NFL Combine last weekend in Indianapolis.

Coming from a small school could lead to the preconceived notion that Wilkerson padded his stats against lesser competition, but nothing can be further from the truth. Against Penn State last September 25 Wilkerson was credited with nine tackles and a forced fumble, and last November 23 he had seven tackles, 1.5 of them coming in the backfield, a sack, a quarterback hurry, and a pass breakup versus the Miami Hurricanes.

Muhammad Wilkerson highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssOjK3D6fFQ

Georgia defensive end/outside linebacker Justin Houston

As one of the best pass-rushers in this draft, Houston is most likely best suited to play outside linebacker in a 3-4 system. In 2010 he recorded 10 sacks, 18 tackles in the backfield, and an interception while lining up at both defensive end and outside linebacker in Georgia’s system. At 6-3, 270 pounds Houston doesn’t appear to be strong enough to play defensive end in a 4-3, but he has the skills necessary to be a force at outside linebacker in a 3-4, which is one of the things the Jets are in need of.

Wright has the Jets taking Houston at pick #30 in his latest mock draft. Here’s what he has to say about the Bulldogs' product:

Despite the presence of some big names like Jason Taylor, Bryan Thomas and Calvin Pace at outside linebacker, the Jets could still use another pass rusher and Georgia’s Justin Houston would be a perfect fit in their 3-4 scheme…An athletic pass rusher with great speed, Houston is a terror off the edge and will likely find a home somewhere in the first round.

http://www.draftcountdown.com/sub/Mock-Draft-B.php

As a trio, Pace, Thomas, and Jason Taylor combined for 17 sacks last season. That’s not nearly enough for a complete defense, and Houston may be the player the Jets need to give them the pass-rushing presence they’ve lacked for years.

Justin Houston highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kR0L2RVId90

Iowa defensive end Adrian Clayborn

Following a dominant 2009 season, in which he posted 11.5 sacks, 20 tackles in the backfield and was named MVP of the FedEx Orange Bowl, Clayborn was considered a top prospect for the 2010 draft. But Clayborn opted to remain in school for his senior season last fall, and one could say it turned out to be a mistake, what with his stats dropping to just seven tackles in the backfield and 3.5 sacks in 2010.

In addition to his poor 2010 season, Clayborn has character concerns, stemming from a January 2009 incident in which he had an altercation with a taxicab driver. Clayborn eventually pled guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge. To cap it off, he also was born with Erb’s Palsy, a condition that resulted in nerve damage to his right shoulder, which leads to weakness and restriction of motion.

Clayborn has shown he can dominate on numerous occasions, though, and many believe he’s still a first-round talent. There are still more than a few mock drafts having him go between picks #16 and #25. In WalterFootball.com’s latest mock draft (March 3), it has Clayborn selected by Tampa Bay at pick #20. Here’s what it has to say about him:

Forget the fact that teams will be worried about Adrian Clayborn's character issues for a second; he just wasn't very good this season. Once considered a top-10 talent, Clayborn will likely come off the board in the late teens or early 20s unless he has a dynamic pre-draft workout.

http://www.walterfootball.com/draft2011_1.php

The 6-2 5/8, 281-pound Clayborn was a three-year starter and team captain for the Hawkeyes. He was named First Team All-Big Ten in 2009 and 2010. If he’s still available at pick #30, the Jets have to decide if he’s a player who will perform at the maximum of his ability in the NFL.

Clayborn vs. Carimi: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zin3JvllXm0&feature=related

Illinois defensive tackle Cory Liuget

At 6-2 1/8, 298 pounds Liuget is another defensive lineman whose stock has risen tremendously over the last month. He’s entering the draft a year early, thanks to a stellar junior year that saw him produce 63 tackles, 12.5 of them coming in the backfield, and 4.5 sacks. In his final game with the Fighting Illini, against Baylor in the 2010 Texas Bowl, Liuget went out on a high note, as he finished the contest with five tackles, 2.5 for losses, and a sack.

According to WalterFootball.com, which has Liuget going 24^th overall to the New Orleans Saints, the Illinois defensive tackle is “quick off the snap, strong against the run, able to bull rush with power, and very versatile.” On the other hand, he “needs to develop pass-rushing moves, does not possess closing speed, and [is] still working on his stamina and conditioning.”

http://www.walterfootball.com/scoutingreport2011cliuget_greg.php

And while Liuget may lack experience when compared to the other prospects at his position, one NFL defensive line coach told ESPN that he ranks Liuget as the second-best defensive tackle in this draft, behind Alabama’s Marcell Dareus. If Liuget is sitting there for the Jets at pick #30, he’ll be very difficult to pass up.

Corey Liuget highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlprPUyKL8M

Other prospects the Jets could consider later on in the draft: Nevada defensive end/outside linebacker Dontay Moch, Arizona defensive end/outside linebacker Brooks Reed, Miami defensive end Allen Bailey, Iowa defensive end Christian Ballard, North Carolina defensive tackle Marvin Austin.

The Jets have made the last two AFC Championship games, so they’ve been very close to winning their first Super Bowl title since the 1968 season. But while they have a lot of talent on the roster, they can’t allow their defensive line or pass rush become a huge weakness. It’s time for Tannenbaum and Ryan to find the next dominant defensive player up front.

Daniel Thomas...He's Got A Little Rodney Hampton In Him

2011-03-02T19:27:00.002-05:00

Don't be completely shocked if the Giants have a new look backfield this year. It's time to refresh the running game. Daniel Thomas just has the look of a classic Giants running back. At 6'1" 230lbs, he runs in the 4.5 range, and has some shiftiness for a big back. Might be worth taking a serious look at in the 2nd or 3rd round.

10 Things I am Thinking About Following the Combine

2011-03-02T02:55:00.002-05:00

As much as you know you shouldn't put too much stock in the combine, you find yourself glued to the television like it was an episode of the Jersey Shore. (Let's not pretend that you don't watch that trainwreck too) More than ever before, the NFL Draft has become the most captivating event because of the impending possibility of a long, drawn out CBA negotiation, this might be the one and only NFL event we can hold onto for quite some time. In addition, with free agency on hold, this is the only hope our teams have of improving their rosters any time soon. So like I said, I know I shouldn't put a lot of stock in the combine...but...

10 Things I am Thinking About Following the Combine:

1: After watching Cam Newton throw out-routes at the combine, I couldn't help but think he was trying to hit Chan Gailey in the face while he sat in the crowd in an effort to try to deter the Bills from drafting him. Why else would he throw the ball 50 yds over the recievers' head?

2: I know there are many Giants fans ranting and raving about Martez Wilson right now. Before you get too excited about his blazing fast 4.49 40 time he posted at the combine watch some film on him:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCcIIuMGi2M&feature=related

You'll find yourself asking...where did the speed go? Oh, and when "Mister Softie" "attempts" to take on blocks...not impressed

3: On the opposite end of the spectrum was Greg Jones, MLB, Michigan St. I had very high hopes for him, love his film, toughness, and on the field production...then he shows up at the combine and tanks (4.7 40 time, and merely above average in other events) In the end, I think Greg Jones will be a better football player than Wilson and I feel that all this will do is drop him down to a 3rd or 4th round pick which will only help the Giants in the end

4: Was the combine in Miami this year, or does Todd McShay get spray tanned between every shoot? And where was Mel and his perfectly quaffed hair doo? Mel Kiper is still the man...One of the only reasons I still watch ESPN over NFL Network on draft day

5: Wow was Akeem Ayers slow! If Jim Burt ran the 40 with a refridgerator strapped to his back he would have beat Ayers. Ayers ran a 4.8 40 on Sunday...that will probably knock him out of the first round. He looked as if he would have been the perfect fit for the Jets, but with that kind of speed, they mind as well have kept Vernon Gholston

6: I wasn't too high on Kris O'Dowd after he got abused at the senior bowl practices, but after his showing at the combine, he is back on my radar. Plus you have to love his character:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZwd2__ahMY&feature=related

I would definitely take a 3rd or 4th round flyer on him

7: I am going to be extremely upset if the Cowboys trade up and take Patrick Peterson...this kid is going to be the next elite lockdown corner in this league. In my opinion, he is the best player in this draft.

8: What are the Jets going to do with their 1st round pick? I liked Ayers and he runs a 4.8...I liked Rahim Moore and he runs a 4.7...I liked Justin Houston, but he probably won't fall that far....now what? Any suggestions? Muhammed Wilkerson anyone?

9: Carson Palmer has $80,000,000 in the bank? I know that guy makes a ton of money, but $80 million....really? How did he manage to save that kind of money? Does he live in a cardboard box? Live on Ramen noodles?

10: All I kept hearing was excuses as to why the most elite QB's in college football couldn't hit a wr running against air..."they are throwing to guys they aren't familiar with"...If I took Jeff George and dropped him off in the middle of the field from a helicopter like a scene out of a vietnam movie, handed him a football, and told him to hit some mid-round WR prospect on a seam route, he would more than likely drill him in the face...Why can't anyone seem to hit the broadside of a barn at this combine? I think Charlie Sheen could have completed one of those out routes Cam Newton threw into the stands. Is it me, or is this qb class extremely overrated because of the desperate need for qb's in this draft?

Mallett steals show at NFL Combine

2011-02-27T21:18:00.007-05:00

A day after being cold to reporters, which provided another blemish to pile on to what has turned into a bad reputation at one of the worst possible times in his young career, Arkansas Razorbacks quarterback Ryan Mallett put on a quite a show for coaches, scouts, and general managers during the NFL Combine's throwing sessions this afternoon in Indianapolis. According to ESPN's John Clayton, Mallett was the most impressive of the quarterback bunch.

Mallett wins first major passing competition: Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallett put on an impressive show with the first group of quarterbacks, edging out University of Washington quarterback Jake Locker, who bounced back nicely from a subpar Senior Bowl. Mallett's strong arm was on display Sunday. On deep seam routes, he was flawless. His fastball delivery on out passes was impressive. Though he struggled with turn-in passes to his left, he was perfect on four throws to his right on post corners and showed great touch on his deep passes.

So, finally, something positive is being written about Mallett, who's been put down repeatedly in the last month with whispers of his alleged drug use and his intelligence being questioned. While the vicious rumors are alarming, after two very successful years with the Razorbacks and today's workout, there's no doubt that Mallett is one of the best quarterbacks in this draft. Should he fall to the mid-rounds, whichever team picks him may get a huge steal.

Mallett’s stock continues to plummet

2011-02-26T23:21:00.006-05:00

During about an hour’s worth of interviews with the media on the third day of the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Arkansas Razorbacks quarterback Ryan Mallett was very cold with reporters as they peppered him with questions about whispers of his alleged drug use. The following is from a report by Yahoo! Sports Jason Cole:

Mallett walked away from the podium leaving the questions hanging unanswered in a series of bumbling, and sometimes pompous, replies that had reporters shaking their heads.

Mallett started off defensive and then repeatedly bobbed and weaved his way around the drug questions. He neither denied nor admitted use. Fair or not, some might conclude that the rumors are true.

The very first question in the interview was about the allegations, which shouldn’t have been a surprise. But it seemed that way to Mallett.

“First question, huh?” Mallett said, perhaps expecting that a bouquet of flowers was headed his direction. He then said, “When I saw that stuff, I laughed about it.”

After that came a series of further half-baked answers that led to more inquiries.

“I said I’m not going to talk about it here,” Mallett said, indicating that he would answer the questions only to NFL teams. Keeping secrets in the NFL about drug use is about as likely as growing palm trees on an iceberg.

Mallett then played the blame game, saying, “Obviously, someone did that for a reason, right before the combine.” In reality, the rumors about Mallett have been swirling for months.

Then there was this cocky gem of an answer to questions about his decision-making on the field. Many around the NFL have been troubled by Mallett’s propensity for big mistakes in critical moments. When asked how he answers those concerns, Mallett said: “Seven thousand-plus yards and 60 touchdowns in two seasons. That’s how I respond to that.”

Jim Druckenmiller, Andre Ware and David Klingler are among dozens of guys who have put up stats like that in college only to do nothing in the NFL.

Still, the daunting question about Mallett came back to the alleged drug use. He stonewalled again and again until he was asked bluntly: “This question isn’t going away until you answer. Why not just answer it?”

“Because I don’t want to talk about it,” Mallett said.

Mallett doesn’t seem to get it. His biggest problem isn’t the nature of the rumor. It’s that he wasn’t upfront. He wasn’t candid. No one was expecting him to detail his problems to the media, if he indeed has them. But at least own up to making mistakes in a general sense if you’re not refuting the claims.

If Mallett had said something like, “Yes, I’ve made mistakes and I’m working to correct them,” the questions would largely go away. Instead, Mallett looked like the antithesis of a leader.

In a profession where handling yourself in front of critics – sometimes 80,000 of them on a Sunday afternoon – is a prerequisite, Mallett flopped.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AuFMXhfxbT4EvdJE9G4xhaVDubYF?slug=jc-newtonmallettinterviews022611

It wasn’t long ago that many experts thought Mallett could possibly be the #1 overall pick in April’s draft. But with the negative press he’s been receiving lately, many mock drafts have him falling to the third round. And after today’s interview session, one has to wonder why he keeps digging himself into a deeper hole.

Mallett is expected to throw for the scouts, coaches, and general managers Sunday. He’ll need quite an impressive performance to atone for today’s awful show in front of the reporters.
