Is the war with Iran a political conflict—or is it being framed as a religious one? Across media, sermons, and political rhetoric, many voices on both sides are invoking religious language, prophecy, and theology.

In this video, I’m joined by two respected scholars to explore the religious dimensions of the conflict: Dr. Ali Ataie, a Sunni Muslim professor and scholar of comparative theology and biblical studies, and Dr. Luis Dizon, a Christian scholar and expert on early Islamic views of the Bible. Together, we discuss how religion is being used, interpreted, and sometimes misunderstood in the conversation about the Iran war.

But what shocked many people was not just the comment—it was the reaction that followed. Across media and social platforms, some voices began defending the deaths as an unfortunate but acceptable part of war.

In this video, I examine those defenses and compare them with the kinds of arguments often used to justify the Old Testament accounts of warfare in the conquest of the Holy Land.

This raises uncomfortable but important questions about moral consistency, war, and how people defend the deaths of children depending on the context.

We also examine Israel’s role, the fallout from Gaza, the political forces driving the conflict, and whether religion is influencing how this war is being framed. Is this a necessary response—or a disastrous escalation?

In the Archdiocese of Maceió, Brazil, the Traditional Latin Mass is now restricted to a single approved location. According to the archbishop, attending or celebrating the Latin Mass elsewhere constitutes a “public act of schism,” which carries the most severe penalty in canon law: automatic excommunication.

This raises serious questions.

Does attending an unauthorized Latin Mass actually constitute schism?
Can excommunication be applied this broadly?
And why is this happening now—just as the SSPX prepares to consecrate new bishops despite warnings from Rome?

Recently, Candace Owens made a striking claim that has generated a great deal of attention online. She asserted that Charlie Kirk is a “time traveler” sent from the future to disrupt what she describes as a satanic agenda. According to her, the CIA supposedly used ancient Sumerian technology from the future to identify both Charlie and Candace as threats to society, leading government agents to attempt to control them — and, when that failed, to allegedly plan Charlie’s death.

These are extraordinary allegations, and they raise serious questions beyond the claims themselves. Rather than simply mock or dismiss them, I believe this moment calls for a deeper conversation about Candace Owens, her methodology of research, the standards of evidence she relies upon, and the broader impact her rhetoric has on public discourse.

“Heresy is the obstinate post-baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith… apostasy is the total repudiation of the Christian faith.”

Where Did This Come From?

The origins trace back to the Old Testament. Deuteronomy 13:6–11 commands the death penalty for Israelites who abandon the faith or encourage others to do so. While the earliest Christians opposed violence and coercion, attitudes changed once Christianity became aligned with state power.

By the 5th century, Christian emperors enforced severe penalties. The Code of Justinian famously stated:

“We decree that whoever has seduced anyone… from the worship of the Christian religion… shall be punished by the loss of his property and by death.”

These laws shaped medieval Europe. The Fourth Lateran Council (1215) required heretics to be handed to civil authorities for “due punishment,” which at the time meant execution.

Pope Innocent III strengthened these policies, authorized military action against heretical groups, and even extended penalties to the children of condemned heretics. Later, Pope Leo X declared that claiming burning heretics was against the Holy Spirit was itself a condemned proposition.

These weren’t just theoretical laws. Examples from the Papal States include:

• Pomponio Algerio (1556): Executed in boiling oil for Lutheran beliefs
• Giordano Bruno (1600): Burned at the stake for heresy

A Significant Shift

Only in modern times — especially after the Church lost temporal power — did official teaching embrace religious liberty. This is expressed most clearly in Vatican II’s Dignitatis Humanae.

Pope St. John Paul II acknowledged this difficult history:

“Another painful chapter… is that of the acquiescence given… to intolerance and even the use of violence in the service of truth.”

Why This Matters

Understanding this history reminds us that the religious liberty many of us enjoy is relatively recent. The Church’s views on coercion and conscience have developed over time, and today it officially rejects the use of force in matters of belief.

I walk through the key parts of the document, explain what the Church actually says about Mary’s role, and unpack why the DDF insists Christ alone is the Redeemer. Then we look at the global reactions — from theologians, Marian devotees, and everyday Catholics — and ask the big question: Is this document magisterial? What kind of authority does it carry for the faithful?

Individually, the Fathers are private theologians: brilliant, holy, and zealous for truth, but not infallible. Collectively, however, they serve as crucial witnesses of Tradition, especially when they show a moral unanimity on matters of faith. We look at how this principle was treated by the Council of Trent and Providentissimus Deus, and ask tough questions:

• What does “moral unanimity” really mean?
• How do we establish it without access to every surviving text?
• What about debated issues like geocentrism?

We also examine the difference between magisterial authority and patristic authority. Only the pope and the college of bishops can bind the universal Church, while individual Fathers—even bishops—held authority only locally in their own day.

Along the way, we confront common misconceptions:

• That the Fathers are always infallible.
• That they hold magisterial authority.
• That they always agree with each other.

Finally, we discuss the practical problems: missing works, inaccessible languages, and manuscript variations that make it difficult to know with certainty what some Fathers actually wrote.
