I carry around a few different sketchbooks depending on where I am going etc. The following sketches are from the sketchbook that gets toted around in my purse. You can usually tell this one because it is a lot of coffee shops and usually in there is the sorta portrait of the top part of my son’s head. When I sketch he is usually on some sort of electronic device as he waits for me, therefore if he is in the sketch it is usually him looking down and moving as he plays his video game…which makes him hard to sketch.

I realized as I was scanning my latest sketches from yesterday that I hadn’t uploaded any from this book in a while. Here some of them are…

Sketches from Spring Break in California

We’ve been back for a bit now and I am finally finding the time to be able to post some of my sketches from our spring break trip. We stayed in Anaheim, CA on the Disneyland property and took day trips along side going to the Disney parks. We took a day and traveled out to the desert to see an old abandoned silver mine in the ghost town of Calico, CA. We also drove to various beaches south of us on Route 1. One of the last days we took a trip down to the San Diego wild animal park where we went on a safari tour and fed giraffes and rhinos. I wish I would have had more opportunities during those times to actually sketch but with a family it isn’t always possible. I did take lots of pictures though and maybe those will end up as a more finished drawing.

Starting last year my son and I have both started taking English style riding lessons. It has been one of those back burner life long of dreams of mine and when Alex and I had the opportunity to start taking lessons I don’t know who was more exited…him or me.

Coming up in a couple weeks we are participating in our first horse show (at a beginner level) and I am really looking forward to it. The stables where we take lessons is really great and they are letting me bring some portraiture brochures to leave in their office as well as at the show.

This is the second horse and rider portrait I have done and I would love to get further into that niche. Horses are amazing creatures and I can totally understand the love that horse owners have for their animals and everything equestrian.

This is Alex with Scotty. (The pony is Scotty just for the record.) I have put 6 hours into this drawing so far. I it might take me another 2-4 hours depending on how picky I get with the details of the bridle etc. It is done with graphite pencil on illustration board.

The final page in my Sketchbook Project book. It is a view of the houses across the prairie out one of my side windows. I think I was in a little of a rush to finish this one and it’s very sketchy. Nevertheless it is the back page of the book so I am including it.

It was a simple dinner. My eight year old son wanted to make us dinner because he is learning about the food pyramid in Cub Scouts. One of his achievements was to plan and cook a dinner. He was all excited to make us a salad. I had toast as well. Gluten free bread can be ummm….interesting to say the least. Millet bread, although pretty dense, when toasted isn’t too bad.

Now that it is January, I am staring at the empty remaining pages in my Sketchbook Project sketchbook and wondering where the heck the time went. I haven’t posted a few of the previous entries so I am posting them as well.

This entry unfortunately had to work around the fact that I had used marker in the previous entry. I guess hindsight would have been to paste in a page over it to have a clean surface. Oh well… I have decided to stick with ballpoint pen or pencil throughout the rest of the entries.
