Make sure your sunglasses block 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B rays by looking for a label that says, &#8220;Provides 100% UV protection&#8221; or &#8221; Provides 100% UV400 protection.&#8221; The American Optometric Association offers a Seal of Acceptance for sunglasses that block 99 percent to 100 percent of UV radiation. Look for this seal to be sure you are getting the maximum protection.</p>

<p>After the beautiful fall season winter has arrived full force. The winter season brings with it a cold wind that can bother our eyes.</p>
<p>Our whole body needs more care during the winter season, and of course this includes our eyes.  Sometimes people tend to forget about the eyes.</p>

<p>Dear Reader,</p>
<p>I am sure that you have heard of age related macular degeneration and you probably even know someone, a family member or friend, who is suffering from it. I know of two people personally.</p>
<p>Macular degeneration is a chronic eye disease marked by deterioration of the Macula, the center part of the retina. This deterioration causes loss of central vision.  Central vision is necessary for Just about everything such as driving, reading, recognizing things like faces and even in doing detail work. Just think if you had a blind spot right in the middle of your vision.</p>
<p>AMD rarely (but it does) causes total blindness, it  does cause blind spots in the victim&#8217;s central vision and it does worsen the quality of their life.</p>

<span id="more-1401"></span>According to Prevent Blindness America, macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss and legal blindness in Americans 65 and over.</p>
<p>Approximately 13 million Americans suffer from it. The exact reasons are not known, however, there are risk factors involved:<br />
- age<br />
- smoking<br />
- family history<br />
- sunlight especially without glasses<br />
- high blood pressure<br />
- cardiovascular disease</p>
<p>And it seems that women and caucasians do get it more than other groups.</p>
<p>Both eyes are usually effected, and at different rates.</p>
<p><strong>Symptoms to watch for:</strong><br />
- Straight lines look wavy or there are shadowy areas or empty spots in the center of the vision.</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t smoke. Smoking can double the risk.</p>
<p>Always protect your eyes from the suns ultraviolet rays.</p>
<p>Watch out for elevated blood pressure&#8230;this can drastically rise the risk, as much as 3 times.</p>
<p>Make sure you eat sufficient fruit and vegetables. A diet high in a variety of fruits and veggies can help diminish the risk.  Dietary supplements of vitamins E and C, beta-carotene, zinc and copper may help delay its progression. (Always consult your doctor before taking supplements.)</p>

<p>Do you notice that every once in a while your vision gets spurts of being &#8220;really good and clear&#8221;?</p>
<p>Wouldn&#8217;t it be super if you could actually make those few bursts of good vision permanent? Good News!  You really could keep that burst of good vision.</p>
<p>A lot of bad vision is actually caused because of:</p>
<p>- near stress (looking at a single spot for long periods of time without a break to your eyes) and &#8211; staring.</p>
<p>We do put our eyes under undue stress causing many of our eye problems.</p>
<p>There is hope and good news:  What you have to start doing is learn how to relax those eye muscles and teach your eyes to be able to &#8220;see into the distance&#8221; again without that staring feeling.<br />
There are exercises and things you can do to help you relax your eyes. Here is one simple tip:</p>
<p>Blink!  Yes it&#8217;s that simple.  The next time you are on your computer, reading a text book or an instruction manual, check and see how often you blink.</p>
<p>Blinking is nature&#8217;s way of protecting your eyes.  Near stress is our way of hurting our eyes.</p>
