John Lennon

John Winston Ono Lennon, [1][2] MBE (9 October 1940 – 8 December 1980), was an English rock musician, singer-songwriter, author, and peace activist who gained worldwide fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles. With Paul McCartney, Lennon formed one of the most influential and successful songwriting partnerships of the 20th century and "wrote some of the most popular music in rock and roll history".[3] He is ranked the second most successful songwriter in UK singles chart history after McCartney.[4]

Lennon revealed a rebellious nature, and biting wit, in his music, on film, in books, and at press conferences and interviews. He was controversial through his work as a peace activist and visual artist. After The Beatles, Lennon enjoyed a successful solo career with such acclaimed albums as John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band and Imagine and iconic songs such as "Give Peace a Chance" and "Imagine". After a self-imposed "retirement" to raise his son Sean, Lennon reemerged with a comeback album, Double Fantasy, but was murdered less than one month after its release. The album would go on to win the 1981 Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

In 2002, respondents to a BBC poll on the 100 Greatest Britons voted Lennon eighth. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Lennon number 38 on its list of "The Immortals: The Fifty Greatest Artists of All Time" (The Beatles being number one). He was also ranked fifth greatest singer of all time by Rolling Stone in 2008.[5] He was posthumously inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987[6] and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.[7]

Judas Priest On Trial for kids Deaths (80's)

On December 23, 1985, two young men in Reno, Nevada put shotguns to their own heads after drinking and smoking marijuana as they listened to a record by the English rock group Judas Priest. Raymond Belknap shot himself fatally, while the other, James Vance, was grossly disfigured. Their parents, claiming that subliminal messages in the heavy metal band's songs mesmerized the boys into their bizarre suicide pact, filed suit against CBS Records. Centered around this non jurored trial, DREAM DECEIVERS looks at this tragedy through interviews with Vance, his and Belknap's parents, other Reno "metalheads", and members of Judas Priest. Plastic surgeons tried all they could to restore what was left of Jay's face, but were only able to restore his ability to eat and breathe - the disfigurement was too severe. Jay returned home to live with his parents between hospital visits and would ride his bicycle around town shocking people with his grotesque disfigurement. Harmony Korine: I used to sneak into the NYU library and they had a copy of it and I would watch it. It gave me the strangest feeling. Just the images of those two kids listening to Stormtroopers of Death, driving around Reno deserts drinking Miller-Lite. Fucking blowing their brains out, listening to Judas Priest backwards. And that guy being interviewed with this face that's completely blown off... It was so eerie.

Subliminal message trial

In the summer of 1990, the band was involved in a civil action that alleged they were responsible for the suicide attempts in 1985 of 20-year old James Vance and 19-year old Ray Belknap in Reno, Nevada, USA.[11] On December 23, 1985 Vance and Belknap got intoxicated then went to a playground at a Lutheran church in Reno. Belknap shot a 12 gauge shotgun under his chin, dying instantly, and Vance followed, but survived with a severely disfigured face. He died three years later after a suicidal overdose of painkillers.[12]

The men's parents and their legal team alleged that a subliminal message of "do it" had been included in the Judas Priest song "Better By You, Better Than Me" from the Stained Class album (actually a cover of a Spooky Tooth number). They alleged the command in the song triggered the suicide attempt.[11] The trial lasted from July 16 to August 24, 1990, when the suit was dismissed.[11] One of the defense witnesses, Dr Timothy E. Moore, wrote an article for Skeptical Inquirer chronicling the trial.[11]

The trial was covered in the 1991 documentary Dream Deceivers: The Story Behind James Vance Vs. Judas Priest. In the documentary Halford commented that, if they wanted to insert subliminal commands in their music, killing their fans would be counterproductive and they would prefer to insert the command "Buy more of our records". Regarding the plaintiff's assertions that the statement "do it" was a command to commit suicide, Halford pointed out "do it" had no direct message.

The Quiet Riot Story

Quiet Riot was an American heavy metal band whose 1983 US Festival appearance helped to solidify metal's image. They are best known for their hit singles "Cum on Feel the Noize" and "Metal Health." They were founded in 1973 by guitarist Randy Rhoads and bassist Kelly Garni, under the name Mach 1. The original line-up featured lead vocalist the late Kevin DuBrow, Rhoads, Garni, and drummer Drew Forsyth.

In a radio interview given by the band in 1979 and available here, DuBrow said the band's name was born of a conversation with Rick Parfitt of British band Status Quo in which Parfitt said he'd like to name a band "Quite Right".^[1] They are ranked at number 100 on VH1's "100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock." Quiet Riot also has a notable iconic heavy metal mascot^[2]^[3]. Their mascot resembles a man (modeled by the artist himself, Grammy Award winning illustrator Stan Watts of Cedar Park, Texas) in a metal facial mask and in a straightjacket (somewhat similar to Hannibal Lecter) which has appeared on almost every single Quiet Riot album. This mascot has been considered alongside Megadeth's Vic Rattlehead, Iron Maiden's Eddie the Head, Motörhead's Snaggletooth B. Motörhead, A.K.A Warpig as enduring familiar heavy metal symbols.

Kevin DuBrow, lead singer of the band for the majority of its existence, was found dead in his Las Vegas, Nevada home at approximately 5:20 p.m. on Sunday, November 25, 2007. The cause of death was ruled an accidental cocaine overdose.^[4] Quiet Riot disbanded after the death of their lead singer.

Quiet Riot released Rehab on October 3, 2006 with a lineup of DuBrow, Banali, Franklin, & Neil Citron. Former Deep Purple bassist and singer Glenn Hughes also made a guest vocal appearance on the album.

On July 13, 2007, Quiet Riot performed at glam metal festival "Rocklahoma." Then on September 19 they gave a free show to service members on Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS

On November 25, 2007, The Vegas Eye website reported that Kevin DuBrow was found dead in his apartment that day. Banali confirmed the death in an email to Spain's The Metal Circus.^[8]Banali wrote:

"Please respect my privacy as I mourn the passing and honor the memory of my dearest friend Kevin DuBrow."

On December 10, 2007, media reports confirmed that Dubrow was pronounced dead on the afternoon of November 25, 2007, and was later determined to have died of a cocaine overdose approximately six days earlier.

On January 14, 2008, drummer Frankie Banali issued the following statement regarding the end of Quiet Riot.

"I have been approached to see if I would be interested in contacting Rudy Sarzo and Carlos Cavazo and to audition singers for Quiet Riot. I have also been approached to see if I would be interested in contacting and reforming the version of Quiet Riot that included Paul Shortino, Carlos Cavazo and Sean McNabb. Let me make this very simple and perfectly clear. While I am still actively involved in the business interests of Quiet Riot and will continue in that capacity, I reject any and all suggestions to have Quiet Riot continue as a live performing entity. My friendship, love and respect for [late Quiet Riot singer] Kevin DuBrow as well as my personal love and affection for Kevin's mother and his family makes it inconceivable for me to ever entertain any ovation to reform or to continue Quiet Riot . Kevin was too important to go on without him. It would also be a disrespect to the fans who have supported Quiet Riot for nearly 25 years. I thank everyone for the wonderful and sometimes unpredictable adventure that I was able to share as a member of Quiet Riot . The only regret that I have is the loss of Kevin. May he rest in peace. I now begin life after Quiet Riot." ^[9]

Cinderella is an American rock band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They emerged in the mid-1980s with a series of multi-platinum albums and hit singles whose music videos received heavy MTV rotation. They were initially famous for being a glam metal and hard rock band, but then shifted over towards a more blues-rock oriented sound. By the mid-1990s, the band's popularity waned due to personal setbacks and public changes in musical tastes. The band has sold over 18 million albums to date worldwide.

Possibility Of A New Cinderella Record

Jeff Lebar was interviewed by Ultimate-Guitar and stated that Cinderella would love to make a new record but obstacles holding the group back would be that they still haven't been signed by a record label after Sony dropped the band in 2000. Jeff also stated that he is busy with his new band entititled Freakshow (Features Frankie Banali of Quiet Riot) and Eric is busy with Naked Beggars. Jeff also stated that the timing would have to be accurate and at the right time. Tom Keifer still has yet to also release his solo album, which has been in the works for almost eight years.

LYNYRD Skynyrd pianist Billy Powell, one of the longest-serving members of the 1970s supergroup, has died aged 56.

The band announced the death on its website without giving further details.

Powell, a survivor of the 1977 plane crash in Mississippi that claimed the lives of six people including lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, died on Tuesday.

"Beloved pianist for the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band, Billy Powell, passed away last night," the statement said.

"The family and band request your respect and understanding during this difficult time. Thank you."

According to celebrity news website TMZ.com, Powell died in the southeastern state of Florida.

The Texas-born Powell worked as a roadie for Skynyrd during the group's early years before his keyboard skills were noticed by Van Zant during preparations for a concert.

He appeared on the band's debut album and was part of the group's meteoric success through the next four years, a period which saw them produce classic rock anthems including Sweet Home Alabama and Free Bird.

Powell was seriously injured in the 1977 plane crash that decimated the group, killing Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines and backing vocalist Cassie Gaines. Powell rejoined the group in 1987 for a tribute tour.

"Roundabout" is the track which opens the 1971 album Fragile produced by British progressive rock band Yes. In 1972, an edited version of the song was released as a single with "Long Distance Runaround" on the B side. The single has been listed at #15 on one list of 1972s best songs, and "Roundabout" has become one of the best-known songs by Yes. "Roundabout" was written by Jon Anderson and Steve Howe.

Although the song's cryptic lyrics are believed by some to have philosophical themes, Anderson says that the words simply came to him while driving to the studio one early morning.

Howe's use of octave harmonics on the acoustic guitar introduction of the song, plucking the four notes that would comprise an Em chord on an open guitar, has become one of his signature pieces of guitar work. In the film School of Rock, Fragile is given to the keyboardist Lawrence as he is told to listen to the keyboard solo on "Roundabout".

An acoustic arrangement of "Roundabout" was recorded for The Ultimate Yes: 35th Anniversary Collection.
