Neethane En Ponvasantham online Tamil Movie Review

Produced by Photon Kathaas and RS Infotainment, directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, Neethane En Ponvasantham is a love story (or as the director cleverly puts it across – moments from Varun-Nithya’s love story). With excellent acting, fantastic music, pleasing-on-the-eye cinematography, Neethane En Ponvasantham is a great case study of sum being lesser than the parts. The film starts off when Varun joins college and he meets Nithya in the college culturals. They share a history of love-hate relationship. First, they meet when they were kids and then when they were in school. Sparks fly when they meet duing college and they are together for the next four years. The film tries to capture some interesting moments in their lives. Unfortunately, only some of the moments are engaging.

I am not a great fan of GVM’s VTV. It was not bad cinema, it wasn’t a plot oriented film but a character oriented film. But when the director tries the same technique again in NEP, he falls flat. Despite excellent acting by Samantha and Jiiva, you really do not care as much for Varun and Nithya as you should have. Beyond a point their fights become irritating and you wonder why at all they should be together. The biggest drawback of NEP is the script focusses too much on the fights between Varun and Nithya and not so much on romantic moments. And you know the director has faltered when he packs off Nithya on a holiday to Edinburgh, and focuses on Varun and you immediately sit up with interest. The moment Nithya is back, the script sags again.

Just like in the Tamil film Khushi, a key scene happens on the rooftop just before the interval – the roof top acts as a character here (Varun-Nithya have had some real intimate moments in this rooftop), but the scene is absolutely ineffective due to the mishandling by the director. (The scene from Khushi in comparison is Citizen Kane – more on this a bit later). To give credit to the film, there are a few moments which are engaging. Nithya teaching Varun how to pronounce Edinburgh, the initial school scenes, the climax scene in the same rooftop, the family scenes which changes Varun from a boy to a man, and the first few moments in the college culturals are really entertaining. Incidentally, these are the portions when Varun and Nithya do not fight!

And GVM has done the biggest disservice to Ilayaraja by having improper situations for at least 3 songs. Mudhal Murai, Kaatrai konjam and Ennodu act as speed breakers. The songs are picturised with love and care but due to the situations in which they occur, you really do not get involved. But the balance 4 songs – Saindhu Saindhu, Sattru Munbu, Vaanam Mella and Pengal Endral – are good. Sattru Munbu is rivetting in its picturisation in the climax, and the way Samantha emotes here clearly lifts the film to a different level. (Thengi pona Ore nadhiyena indru naanada – you can see it in her eyes – frankly I did not think she could act this well).

The climax is very good on its own, but when compared to the rest of the film, it is outstanding. And what works here are the moments where no one talks – and this is where Raja scores. What a BGM in the last few minutes. When you hear Raja’s BGM in the last few scenes, you immediately realize what is wrong with the film – through the film, some one or other keeps on talking, and there is just no scope for BGM. GVM – Is this how you write scenes? You should have learnt from a less sensitive director (perhaps more street smart) like S.J.Surya. Take the Khushi rooftop scene for example, Vijay and Jothika fight in the rooftop – they keep on arguing – the pitch of their tones keep on getting high – and then an airplane takes off nearby and interrupts their argument for a few moments – and it provides such a character to the scene.

And when Vijay says something he should not have said, the director immediately focuses on Jothika’s close up reaction. She is so hurt that Vijay immediately realizes the mistake he has done and his facial expression conveys that he is really sorry for what he had said. But she is now so hurt that she isn’t prepared to give him another chance – the director focuses on close ups and the music director gives a reasonable good BGM and then the scene becomes so very effective. GVM – You may well want to show that the rooftop is a character by opting for a long shot that covers the rooftop as well as Chennai skyline, but you can’t extend it to the whole scene. It reduces the experience to watching something like a stage play.

And you take a genius like Raja, who changed the way BGM was written in Indian Cinema, and offer him no scope at all? I mean, isn’t this suicide? Here is a composer, who had saved films like Idhayam before. And the moment you listen to the last couple of scenes, you know Raja could have saved NEP, if the director thought about BGM when conceiving shot composition. But the current product is even beyond the Maestro. Wasted Opportunity.

As the last offering by Yashji, here we salute you Mr Chopra for churning out such a brilliant masterpiece. JTHJ is a must watch, with a lots of 'luv shuv' elements and intensity in it. On the whole, you cannot afford to miss out this one.

Tiding over the logical incongruity of an ageing superstar playing a twenty-something lover boy who matches steps with a vivacious actress half his age might take some doing. But once you manage to get that mental holdup out the way, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Yash Chopra’s last film, is a perfectly fitting finale to an eventful life and career.

The screenplay by Aditya Chopra and Devika Bhagat is by no means flawless but, for the most part,Jab Tak Hai Jaan is watchable, if somewhat emotionally manipulative.

Beautifully shot in easy-on-the-eye parts of London and Ladakh, the film, in the best traditions of a Yash Chopra romance, sees the world primarily through a tried-and-tested “love is life” aperture. The view that it provides is generally likable, if not always completely persuasive.

The mushy moments at the heart of the love story might feel a tad pulpy at times. ButJab Tak Hai Jaan leaves a soothing afterglow.

You have seen it all before, notably in Dil To Pagal Hai and Veer-Zaara. Yet, Jab Tak Hai Jaanexudes a surprising degree of freshness. It stems from the quirky new-age twists that the screenplay throws into the mix.

One half of the film is a variation on the legend of Mirabai – the heroine, a prim and propah London girl, is caught between her unshakable faith in Jesus Christ (who she believes will never let her down) and her temporal love for a charming street musician who sweeps her off her feet and tempts her to “cross the line”.

A substantial part of the second half presents another face of Eve in the form of a gutsy Delhi girl who is proud to belong to the “instant make out, instant break-up” generation.

The feel-good romantic ménage a trois plays out in two divergent settings ten years apart. The plot twists are simple and often rather facile, especially when the film hurtles towards its rather predictable denouement.

That apart, Jab Tak Hai Jaan resorts to old-school tropes like road accidents, a head injury, a protracted case of retrograde amnesia and a neurologist who recommends some playacting to help the victim regain normalcy.

But when it comes to emotional layering, which was always Yash Chopra’s forte as a storyteller, the director is in complete control. The film has enough simple moments of tenderness to offset the several not-so convincing heavy-handed twists.

The opening sequence – set in present-day Leh – introduces the audience to Major Samar Anand of the Indian army’s bomb disposal squad at work at work. He knows no fear. He defuses IEDs without donning a bomb suit. He is known as “the man who cannot die”.

Through the pages of his diary, the film cuts to London and goes back in time. Samar Anand is a struggling Indian immigrant. He makes a living by strumming a guitar and singing folksy Punjabi numbers at tourist spots and doing odd jobs as a snow-cleaner outside a church, a sales boy in a fish market and a waiter in a restaurant.

He falls in love with Meera Thapar (Katrina Kaif), daughter of a wealthy NRI businessman (Anupam Kher). Circumstances contrive to keep them apart although they develop the deepest feelings for each other.

A heartbroken Samar leaves for India and joins the army. In Kashmir valley, the musician-turned-soldier meets another pretty girl Akira Rai (Anushka Sharma), an aspiring documentary filmmaker on an assignment to record the bomb expert and his team at work.

But the London lass still haunts Samar and he is caught between the woman who inspired his music and the bubbly young girl who livens up things around the brooding loner.

Akira confesses to being “totally, completely, madly” in love with Samar, but the latter spurns her advances.

Though the focus of Jab Tak Hai Jaan is on the male protagonist, the two women in his life aren’t mere mannequins. They are full-on Yash Chopra heroines, blessed with both grace and intelligence, besides the ability to speak their minds and hold on to their beliefs.

Therefore, despite the lovey-dovey nothingness that drives the plot, Jab Tak Hai Jaan has more substance than most romantic films that come out of Bollywood.

Shahrukh oozes charm and chutzpah and ensures the character remains in the realms of believability.

Katrina plays the grounded Meera with assurance. In the moments when she is egged on by Samar to let her hair down – especially in the sequence with the underground dancers – the actress lets herself go and makes an impression.

But it is to Anushka Sharma that Jab Tak Hai Jaan really belongs. Turning in an infectiously energetic performance, she breathes life into the somewhat flaccid second half.

Surprisingly, one aspect of Jab Tak Hai Jaan that isn’t quite up to scratch is the musical score. The AR Rahman-Gulzar combo that never fails to yield a cracker isn’t quite in its elements here.

The love ditties sound nice while they play on the screen, but they do not stay with you after the hurly-burly is done.

Watch Jab Tak Hai Jaan not just for the obvious sentimental reason but for the fact that it shows, for one last time, what Bollywood will miss now that the undisputed master of romantic sagas is no more.

Keep off to protect your Diwali
You may get depressed to find your action hero of Singham fame Ajay Devgan talking foolish without much sense. Son of Sardar doe not smack of ill-humour, it is stupidity out and out.

Son of Sardar is an attempt at comedy but ends up as tragedy for the audience at least. The film is laboured and effort to evoke laughter is so artificial that one feels like crying instead.

Not that it has not impressive cast—Ajay Devgan, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha and Juhi Chawala to name a few. Each of them has also tried to do well. But they had little chance as the script was hardly enabling.

If your effort to crack a joke fails, everybody knows what happens. The film is precisely that. The main protagonist Ajay Devgan comes back form UK to sold a piece of land in Phagwara of Punjab.

But he lands in a trouble as a family is waiting for him to settle old scores. The revenge of a family murder committed by the father of Jassi (Ajay Devgan) is to be taken. The family which offers him recluse is the one which wants to murder him.

But this family has a ludicrous tradition of not killing a guest till he is in the confines of its house. It leads to subsequent dramas, each beating the other in stupidity and mindlessness.

Sanjay Dutt who had given sparkling performance in Munna Bhai looks so stupid attempting to look innocent that one’s heart goes out to him. So is Sonakshi Sinha who has befriended Jassi on way from Delhi in train but discovered that her family is after his life.

It is indeed tough to make a successful laughter show as your creativity is stretched to its limit. The attempt at Son of Sardar is at best feeble. The combined effort of some of the bollywood finest actors has failed to deliver. Want to protect your Dipawali, keep off Son of Sardar.

Ajay Devgn’s typical masala entertainer defies logic, but doesn’t fail to tickle your funny bone

If mindless entertainment is what you are seeking this Diwali then Ashwni Dhir’s Son Of Sardaar-starring Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt and Sonakshi Sinha-is the perfect pick. So keep both your snobbish taste and your common sense aside to enjoy this extremely predictable, over-the-top filmy and sporadically entertaining drama. What makes Son Of Sardaar worth a watch is the simplicity of its narration, its inherently nonsense humour and its quirky characters who know where todraw the line. Add to this the much-needed tadka of some larger-than-life action sequences coupled with fine camera work and snappy editing and the movie holds your attention, even if it does so in parts.

So you have Jassi Randhawa a happy-go-lucky young Sardaar (Ajay Devgn) who has no idea whatsoever about his family’s action-filled murky past and the legendary feud between his family, Randhawas and the archrivals Sandhus. It is only when his colleague discloses certain secrets that Jassi learns about his family and about his ancestral property at his native place in Punjab. He decides to go the village. On his journey, Jassi bumps into Sukh ( Sonakshi Sinha) and both fall in love with each other, but neither confesses their true feelings. Once landed in his Village, Jassi realises that Sukh belongs to the Sandhus’ family headed by the mighty Ranvijay Singh ( Sanjay Dutt). Things become worse when both Jassi and Ranvijay know that they are enemies because of that infamous bloody saga that took place 25 years ago.

Ranvijay is now thirsty for Jassi’s blood,but can’t kill him so long as Jassi remains his guest. (Atithi Devo Bhav, you see!) Even Jassi knows that the moment he steps out of Ranvijay’s house he will be chopped into pieces by his otherwise warm, welcoming and large-hearted host. If one tries every trick in the book to stay inside the house, the other uses every possible strategy to drive the young Sardaar out. Son Of Sardaar is the tale ofwho outwits the other and how. Will Jassi win Ranvijay over with his values, his might and his honesty to marry the mundi ( Sonakshi) from the house, and most importantly to escape from the almost certain clutches of death.

It’s a no brainer to guess what conclusion can one expect of this typical churn-off-the-mill-looking entertainer. But Son Of Sardaar has its moments mainly because of the characters involved who give their best to make this ordinary tale look impressive. Ajay Devgn portrays the vulnerable and ready to fight-if-instigated Sardaar really well. Sanjay Dutt’s comic timing and his personality stay with you even hours after you leave the theatre. Sonakshi Sinha is impressive and looks an authentic Panjabi mundi. A special mention here for Juhi Chawla, Mukul Dev and Vindu Dara Singh who hold your attentionwith their antics. Sajid Wajid’s music is melodious, but far from impressive.

Over all, Son Of Sardaar revels gleefully in its silliness.Watch it, if you will, for the comicalsketches of its characters, some gravity-defying-fights and most importantly for its genuine intention to entertain!

Son of Sardaar, also known by the abbreviated form SOS, is an upcoming Bollywood romance drama film directed by Ashwni Dhir. The film is a remake of Telugu movie Maryada Ramanna directed by S. S. Rajamouli, which in itself is a remake of the 1923 American silent movie Our Hospitality starring Buster Keaton and Natalie Talmadge. The film features Ajay Devgn, Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Dutt and Sonakshi Sinha in lead roles. Cinematographer Aseem Bajaj is handling the camera once again for Dhir. Thuppakki marks the joining together of AR Murugadoss, Ilayathalapathy Vijay and world class cinematographer Santhosh Sivan. Does the film rise up to the expectation?

Jagadish is an army man who comes on a vacation to his hometown in Mumbai. His parents’ efforts to get him married did not succeed. However, he develops an attraction towards the proposed girl at a later stage only to be rejected by her. Do they join or not make for the romantic portion of the film.

On the other hand, the hero happens to come across a bus blast and gets to keep his hands on the perpetrator of the crime. However, he was sure that the criminal is not the head man and that he is only a sleeper cell. He wants to catch hold of the lead man. How intelligently he moves ahead and makes Mumbai free of terrorists’ sleeper cells forms the crux of the story.

Vijay is a pleasure to watch. After a loud performance in Velayudham and a subtle performance in Nanban, the actor stands out in the role of an army man, where one has to use one’s intelligence and muscle power equally. He is fit as a fiddle and his beefed up look in the army man attire is mention worthy. Vijay as usual delights the audience with his dancing skills, though at times you feel that the director has gone for an overkill of the same. Vijay’s costumes have also gone for a makeover like his character in the film for the good. Vidyut Jamwal as the villain has scope for performance and he has given a convincing performance.

Like any other AR Murugadoss film, the love angle in the film has a fresh appeal. Kajal Aggarwal has done justice to her role. Sathyan as the sub-inspector has nothing major to do but is good and adds some lighter moments to the other wise action based script. Jayaram as the army officer too has done a good job.

Santhosh Sivan’s camera does not need any introduction. The film has been extensively shot in Mumbai and the city unfolds before you in all its busy charm. Harris Jayaraj’s songs are good and the songs have been picturized in the most beautiful manner. However, the placement and number of songs do not go well for the film’s pace and length. One feels it should have been a respite if at least two songs had been removed from the film. Though good, the BGM gives out a heard-before feel. Sreekar Prasad’s editing is good and excels in action scenes.

The film is engaging and racy and has a mention-worthy climax. As mentioned in the end card, the director has made the film as an ode to the Indian Army.

Verdict : This fully loaded gun is a sure shot hit!

Diwali 2012 celebrates with high spirits and grand performances

In the bustle of girls in beautifully colored, traditional, Indian clothing, shawls waving behind them as they walked and embellishments jingling as they moved, and men in their finest Sherwani running to and from the stage, it was difficult to not be visually stimulated. The air was sweet with incense and the smell of Indian food. The powerful drums bumping in the background showcased the efforts taken to produce a celebration for Diwali 2012.

The Indian Festival of Lights was held in the Glenn Miller Ballroom on Saturday, recognizing the holiday that celebrates good over evil. Put on by the Indian Student Association (ISA), the festival fell on the lunar day of the new moon, signifying the beginning of the Hindu New Year. Over a five day period, the festival is commemorated through various events, like setting off firecrackers to ward off negative energy and spirits.

As the crowd settled into the ballroom, the show began with a prayer sung by a student member of the ISA. This was the only time the crowd remained quiet, as the rest of the night’s performances had audience members riled up, clapping along to the rhythms, cheering and calling out at favorite parts in the show.

“I enjoyed the dance, the music, but the atmosphere as a whole is what I enjoyed the most,” said freshman Khaled Aldhafiri, an exchange student from Saudi Arabia.

After a multitude dance numbers from different regions, like Garba, 90’s and current music mashups and Bhangra, the event’s energy went down a notch. This was due to a performance of Raga through a combination of Tabla drums, Sitar and, in this particular performance, a piano. The audience rooted for the performance and encouraged the cheerful tunes to keep playing with cheers and claps.

The significance of the performances was not lost on even the freshest newcomers to Diwali celebrations.

“There was a lot of energy and excitement,” said sophomore Mitch May. “I’d never even heard of Diwali before this, and now I wonder what other cultural events I’m missing out on.”

A fashion show that displayed a darker tone to the Indian traditional clothing through a multitude of black garments with unique accents of gold. Later, a band rocked out to Indian ballads as the whole audience sang along.

“Indians always have something interesting to offer, and I heard this one was well-prepared for, so I had to give it a try,” Aldhafiri said. “I’m glad I did.”

The enormous spread of traditional Indian food was served after the closing performances, which included the national anthems of the United States and India. DJ Ashish B., who has been called the No. 1 Indian DJ in North America, played until midnight, carrying out the celebration with good music, food and company.

Thuppakki (English: Gun) is an upcoming Tamil action thriller film written and directed by A. R. Murugadoss. The film will feature Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal, in the lead roles along with Vidyut Jamwal, Jayaram, Sathyan, Gautham Kurup and Akshara Gowda in supporting roles. The film is produced by S. Thanu and features background score and soundtrack composed by Harris Jayaraj with cinematography handled by Santhosh Sivan, who with Thuppakki will introduce the Arri Alexa camera to Indian cinema.

The story of the film revolves around a youngster from a Mumbai-based Tamil family. The happy-go-lucky man's life undergoes a sudden turn. The decisions he takes after that is the rest of the story. Said by the director A.R.Murugadoss. The film, which commenced production in December 2011 in Mumbai, is slated coinciding with Diwali festival on 13 November 2012. “I don’t burn firecrackers. At the age of 10, I stopped doing that. I start my celebrations by making sure my house is neat and clean. I make sure everything looks pretty and sparkly.Then I light a lot of diyas and make the rangoli myself. I love flowers, so I use them to decorate the house. Post 7aum Arivu, director AR Murugadoss has come up with an action film, Thuppakki. With Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal in the lead, this film has a strong technical crew consisting of Asia Pacific’s first ASC member Santosh Sivan behind the lens, Sreekar Prasad before the editing desk and Harris Jayaraj as the music composer. The film was initially funded by SA Chandrasekhar, but was later handed over to Kalaipuli Thanu. This film also marks the introduction of the newest Arri digital technology into the Indian film industry.
The Vijay starrer went through a lot of barriers since the release of its first look. A case was filed by an NGO against the makers for releasing a poster showing Vijay smoking a cigar. Later, when the makers announced their release date, a title war arose against the Kalla Thuppakki team. The release date was recently confirmed after the judgment came in favor of AR Murugadoss and team. Vijay, who appears as a DIA specialist in Thuppakki, has also made a comeback as a singer. Diwali is one of the most important festivals in India and the movies getting released on this festive season are big, extravagant and are in high expectations from the film buffs and big film stars are all eying this holiday season for a great show and a huge box office collection.

For Diwali 2012, in Tollywood, many movies were planned to be released, but after a lot of rescheduling and postponement, now it is finalized that the Diwali season would witness two big films – one Vijay’s “Thuppakki” and another Nagarjuna’s “Damarukam”.

Now,for a brief look at both these big movies:

Thuppakki

Thuppakki is a Telugu action thriller film directed and written by A. R. Murugadoss. The film stars Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal in the lead roles. And the supporting roles are played by Jayaram, Sathyan, Vidyut Jamwal, Akshara Gowda and Gautham Kurup.

The story revolves around a youth from a Tamil family based in Mumbai. Kajal Aggarwal plays a boxer in the film. The sudden change that happens in the hero’s life is the main turning part in the story and the remaining part of the film is about the decision he takes to handle the crisis.

Thuppaki releases both in Telugu and Tamil on November 13, exactly on Diwali day.

Damarukam

Damarukam is a socio-fantasy flick, starring Nagarjuna in the role of Mallikarjuna where Anushka Shetty does the lead lady role. Ravi Shankar, dubbing artist plays the supernatural villain role in this movie. Prakash Raj and Ravi Shankar play key roles in the movie.

Previously, Damarukam was scheduled to release on Nov 9, but latest reports say the movie releases on Nov 10.

RR Movie Makers say Damarukam is the costliest film till date. Nagarjuna said the last 35 minutes will give a stunning movie-watching experience and movie is entirely packed with graphical extravagance.

Karthi New Film Biryani Diwali in 2012 is going to be a treat for Kollywood cinema buffs. Earlier Vijay and STR are all set to entertain the audiences with their Thuppakki and Podaa Pdoi on 13th of November and now makers of Biriyani have planned to unveil the new look of Karthi on the occasion of Deepavali.

“Biriyani shooting is going well. Girls be ready for Karthi’s new look, it’s going to be a treat,” said Venkat Prabhu, director of Biriyani. “Yes, I’m very happy with karthi’s new look. Hopefully, the firstlook will be out for Diwali and can’t wait for u guys to see it. We all enjoyed the photo shoot and the song by Yuvan is awesome. Waiting for your feedback,” said Vasuki Bhaskar.

Karthi will be romancing Hansika and Mandy Takhar in Biriyani that also casts Premgi Amaren and Prasanna in the vital roles. Biriyani will enjoy the music scores of Yuvan Shankar Raja, cinematography by Sakthi Saravanan and editing will be handled by Praveen K.L. and Srikanth N.B among the technical crew…….
