7.5 earthquake near Sand Point, Alaska prompts tsunami warning

October 20, 2020: A magnitude 7.5 earthquake near Sand Point, Alaska Peninsula triggered a tsunami warning causing locals to evacuate to higher ground.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s epicenter was located in the North Pacific Ocean about 55 miles southeast of Sand Point.

The earthquake caused a tsunami warning along roughly 500 miles of the Alaska Peninsula coastline. The warning extended from Kennedy Entrance, 40 miles southwest of Homer, to Unimak Pass, 80 miles northeast of Unalaska. The tsunami waves reached a height of 2.2 feet above the tide in Sand Point.

According to the USGS, the 7.5 earthquake in Alaska occurred as the result of strike-slip faulting near the subduction zone interface between the Pacific and North America plates, either within the upper (North America) Plate or within the downgoing (Pacific) slab.

Large earthquakes are common in the Alaska-Aleutian subduction zone. Eight earthquakes of magnitude greater than magnitude 7.0 have occurred since 1900 around 250 km of this area.

It was an aftershock of the magnitude 7.8 quake that struck the same area in July this year. The earthquake had caused mild damage in Sand Point with reports of damaged docks and cracked roads.

Westmorland, California earthquake swarm: More than 240 earthquakes recorded

October 1, 2020: More than 240 earthquakes have been recorded near Westmorland, California.

A 4.9 magnitude earthquake is the latest and strongest earthquake to strike near Westmorland. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the magnitude 4.9 earthquake was located 4 km NE of Westmorland, California.

The earthquake swarm began around 4 p.m., when a 3.0 magnitude temblor struck. At least 240 earthquakes were recorded by 8 p.m.

USGS confirmed that the earthquake and the associated swarms are located in an area of diffuse seismic activity between the San Andreas fault in the north and the Imperial fault to the south.

It’s less likely, but possible, that a larger quake with a magnitude up to 6.9 will strike, according to the earthquake forecast by the USGS.

According to the USGS, the latest swarm is “rapidly evolving,” and seismologists will update their quake forecast as more data is collected.

Tremors were felt by the people of San Diego County and Tijuana.

September 9, 2020: A magnitude 3.1 earthquake have been felt by the northern half of New Jersey early Wednesday morning.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 5 kilometers about 1.5 miles outside of the town of Freehold.

The tremor was felt across northern New Jersey and into parts of New York and Pennsylvania as well.

September 5, 2020: Hurricane Laura, the strongest hurricane on record to make landfall in the U.S. state of Louisiana, claimed lives of 71 people and caused damage of around $8.9 billion.

Hurricane Laura made landfall in southwest Louisiana at 1 a.m. on Aug. 27 as a Category 4 storm.

Hurricane Laura killed 31 people in Haiti and four in the Dominican Republic. The storm caused the deaths of at least 36 people in the U.S.

According to the USGS, the earthquake in Nevada today occurred as the result of strike slip faulting in the shallow crust of the North America plate.

This earthquake occurred within the Walker Lane, an active zone of seismicity roughly aligned with the California-Nevada border.

Minor damages with broken windows have been reported in Tonopah. The earthquake also caused damage to US 95 in Esmeralda County. The sections of highway U.S. 95 were closed in Esmeralda and Mineral Counties because of damage.

According to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory, the current earthquake is the largest since 1954. A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck central Nevada on December 16, 1954. The largest earthquake in Nevada's history was of magnitude 7.6 which occurred on October 3, 1915 with epicenter in Pleasant Valley, south of Winnemucca.

In Modesto, California, my experience wasn't so much that I felt much shaking, but I heard my house creaking—here some, then there some—pause—then over there some more. I thought it might be a remote earthquake, but because I didn't feel much shaking I also wondered if it weren't a very strong blast of wind. But it didn't seem to be very windy otherwise.

USGS has revised the magnitude again. The current report claims magnitude 6.5 earthquake with epicenter located 56 km W of Tonopah, Nevada. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 2.8 km.

According to the USGS, there is a 6 % chance of one or more aftershocks that are larger than magnitude 5.8 within one week. However, the chance of an earthquake of magnitude 3 or higher is 93 %.

At least 17 aftershocks have been recorded within an hour.

USGS has again revised the magnitude and updated as it reported first time. USGS reports magnitude 6.4 earthquake 56km W of Tonopah, Nevada. Now, the Nevada Seismological Laboratory and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) are reporting the same magnitude.

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory confirms magnitude 6.4 earthquake with epicenter located 20.6 miles SE of Mina. The earthquake occurred at 4 km depth.

At least seven aftershocks have been felt in Nevada within 30 miniutes. The strongest aftershock was of magnitude 5.4.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has revised the magnitude and downgraded it to 6.2 with epicenter 60 km W of Tonopah, Nevada.

Three aftershocks have been widely felt across Nevada. An earthquake of magnitude 3.8 was recorded after five minutes of the major earthquake. It was followed by magnitude 4.0 light earthquake at 04:12 am local time. Another moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.9 was recorded five minutes later.

According to the USGS, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of less than 1 km.

The quake's epicenter was located 12 km SW of Carpinteria and 26 km far from Santa Barbara.

April 13, 2020: The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency has confirmed six deaths due to tornadoes across several southern US states.

In Mississippi, three deaths were confirmed in Jefferson Davis County, two in Lawrence and one in Walthall.

Tornadoes touched down in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi.

Mississippi governor Tate Reeves has declared a state of emergency after several tornadoes struck the state.

Around 300 homes and other buildings were damaged in northern Louisiana.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued tornado watches and warnings for several states including Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi and Alabama.

April 13, 2020: A tornado warning has been issued for Central Onlosw County, North Carolina.

At 09:57 am EDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Belgrade or 11 miles northeast of Piney Green and was moving northeast at 60 mph.

Locations that could be impacted

Jacksonville, New River Station, Pumpkin Center, Piney Green, Camp Lejeune Center, Swansboro, Hubert, Maysville, Silverdale, Kellum, Midway Park, Belgrade, Catfish Lake, Deppe and Loco VFD.

At least six people have already died after storms triggered tornadoes and flooding in Mississippi.

Tornadoes touched down in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi. Mississippi governor Tate Reeves has declared a state of emergency.

April 11, 2020: A series of earthquakes shook the California-Nevada border near the Yosemite National Park with recent one of magnitude 5.2 near Bodie, California.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), magnitude 5.2 moderate earthquake in California today at 7:36 am had its epicenter located 30km SE of Bodie and 51 km SSW of Mammoth Lakes.

Two hours later, another temblor of magnitude 4.6 rattled the same area. Two more earthquakes with magnitude 4.1 and 3.9 were recorded in the same region around 10 a.m.

March 31, 2020: Strong earthquake of magnitude 6.5 has been recorded in Idaho at 05:52 pm local time, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

According to the USGS, the earthquake's epicenter was located 72km W of Challis, Idaho. The earthquake occurred at 10 km depth.

The earthquake was felt by the residents from Nevada to Montana. The tremor was felt as far as 450 km from the epicenter.

The main earthquake was followed by a 4.8 magnitude aftershock around 30 minutes later. There were more than a half-dozen aftershocks in the hours following the main Challis, Idaho earthquake today.

The current Challis, Idaho earthquake is the second-strongest earthquake in the state of Idaho since records began. Also, no earthquakes of magnitude 5+ have occurred within 50 km of this event over the past 50 years.

A 6.9 magnitude earthquake that happened on Oct. 28, 1983 in the Lost River Range at Borah Peak in Central Idaho is the strongest earthquake in this region. The 1983 Borah Peak earthquake claimed lives of two people with aftershocks felt for a year afterwards.

Idaho earthquake aftershock forecast (USGS)

According to our forecast, over the next week there is a 4% chance of one or more aftershocks larger than magnitude 6.5. It is likely there will be smaller earthquakes over the next week, as well, with 4 to magnitude 3 or higher aftershocks. Magnitude 3 and above are large enough to be felt near the epicenter. The number of aftershocks will drop off over time, but a large aftershock can increase the numbers again, temporarily.

Challis, Idaho earthquake fault lines

According to the USGS, Challis, Idaho earthquake 2020 occurred as the result of complex strike slip faulting within the shallow crust of the North America plate. This earthquake occurred within the Intermountain Seismic Belt, a prominent zone of recorded seismicity in the Intermountain West, and is within the western part of the Centennial Tectonic Belt, an area of southwest-northeast extension north of the Snake River Plain.

The quake is about 16 km north-northeast of the Sawtooth fault, a 60-km-long normal fault that extends along the eastern base of the Sawtooth Range.

Mentone, Texas earthquake today becomes strongest in 30 years

March 26, 2020: Magnitude 5.0 moderate earthquake has been recorded near Mentone, Texas today at 10:16 am local time.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake's epicenter was located around 40 km west of Mentone, Texas. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 8.5km.

This is believed to be one of the strongest quakes in the last 30 years.

Weak tremor of MMI III has been felt by the people of Pecos, Mentone, Salt Flat, Loving and Van Horn, Carisbad. The tremor was felt as far as Artesia and El Paso.

At least five smaller earthquakes had been registered near Mentone, Texas, over the past four days.

According to the USGS, the March 26, 2020 M 5.0 Mentone, Texas earthquake occurred as the result of shallow normal faulting about 40 km west of the town of Mentone, Texas. The earthquake occurred within the interior of the North America plate, far from any plate boundaries. The preliminary focal mechanism solution for the earthquake indicates rupture occurred on a moderately dipping fault plane striking roughly east-west.

Tornado damage reported in Mississippi and Alabama

March 24, 2020: A large tornado ripped across northeastern Mississippi and northwestern Alabama causing injuries and damage in the town of Tishomingo, Mississippi, near the Alabama state line.

According to the Weather Channel, a Dollar General store was destroyed in Tishomingo.

The National Weather Service in Memphis confirmed the tornado moved through shortly after 5:30 p.m. local time.

Michigan statewide tornado drill today: March 25, 2020

March 25, 2020: As a part of Severe Weather Awareness Week, the state of Michigan is conducting its statewide tornado drill today afternoon at 1 PM.

Apart from the sirens, the alerts will also be send on the weather radio and other devices that receive emergency alerts.

According to Michigan State Police, many counties have canceled their tests for tornado drill today.

Many counties aren't testing its emergency alert system due to the ongoing state of emergency in the community. Due to the concerns and anxiety with COVID-19, the counties have cancelled plans to test the tornado drill scheduled for today.

Magna, Utah Earthquake: Buildings damaged, dozens of aftershocks recorded

March 18, 2020: A 5.7 magnitude earthquake has been recorded in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States today, with an epicenter located 6 km north-northeast of Magna, Utah.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake today in Magna, Utah occurred at 11.9 km depth.

Over than 50 aftershocks have been recorded within two hours of the main earthquake.

The earthquake caused power outages near Salt Lake City International Airport. The control tower was immediately evacuated and passengers in terminals were moved onto buses.

Utah Emergency Management said that no serious damage is expected from the Magna earthquake. The minor damage has been occurred to historic Rio Grande Depot and St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral. Also dozens of mobiles homes have been damaged in West Valley City.

The earthquake took place during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic in the United States.The earthquake also disrupted some of the government work responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the USGS, the March 18, 2020 M5.7 earthquake north of Magna, Utah (just west of Salt Lake City) occurred as the result of normal faulting in the shallow crust of the North America plate. This earthquake is located in the Intermountain seismic belt, a prominent north-south-trending zone of recorded seismicity in the Intermountain West, including the Wasatch Front urban corridor.

The tremor was reportedly felt as far away as Wyoming and southern Idaho.

The current earthquake is the state's strongest earthquake since the 1992 St. George earthquake, and the strongest to occur near Salt Lake City since 1962.

March 6, 2020: An earthquake of 5.5 in magnitude has been felt in Yuma, Arizona today.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake of magnitude 5.5 occurred in the town of Doctor Alberto Oviedo Mota in Baja, California.

The quake's epicenter was located about 67 miles south of Yuma in the Mexican state of Baja California.

The Yuma Fire Department tweeted that there is no damage caused by the today's earthquake.
