One of the most memorable experiences was encountering a leopard as it paid a dinner-time visit to Leopard Hill camp, approaching to less than 100 yards from the outdoor dining area. The leopard's stealth and grace were on full display, a true testament to their mastery of camouflage.

And of course, the cheetahs of the Mara are nothing short of incredible. I was fortunate to capture a cheetah stalking its prey, showcasing the agility and precision of these extraordinary feline hunters. In another image, a cheetah stretched after seeking shelter from a storm, its sleek form a testament to both beauty and resilience.

**The Great Migration: Nature's Grand Spectacle**

One of the highlights of any visit to the Masai Mara is witnessing the Great Migration. This breathtaking annual event features over a million wildebeest and 250,000 zebras departing from the Serengeti and making their way to the Mara. A tense standoff ensued, with the mongooses forming a tight pack to charge at the monkeys. Amidst the chaos, one baby monkey became frightened, leading its mother to protectively hold it in her arms. Surprisingly, the monkeys held their ground, occasionally snatching a mongoose by the tail and pulling it out of the pack. In the end, the mongooses conceded, and the monkeys returned to their meal, showcasing the resilience of wildlife in the Mara.

As a photographer, I'm always on the lookout for unique and interesting subjects to capture through my lens. And when I came across a Prothonotary Warbler at Ashley River Park in Summerville on Sunday 4/30/23, I knew I had found just the perfect shot.

These tiny birds are not only incredibly beautiful, with their vibrant yellow feathers and striking black eyes, but they also have a fascinating life story. Did you know that Prothonotary Warblers migrate thousands of miles each year? During the winter, they travel to Central and South America before returning to breed in North America in the spring. This makes them a popular bird among bird watchers and nature enthusiasts, and for good reason.

When it comes to capturing photos of Prothonotary Warblers, there are a few tips I'd like to share. Firstly, it's important to be patient and wait for the right moment. These birds can be quite elusive and move quickly, so you need to be ready to capture the shot as soon as you see it.

Another important tip is to use a fast shutter speed. Prothonotary Warblers move quickly, so you need to be able to capture them in motion without any blur. A shutter speed of at least 1/500th of a second is recommended, and you can increase this even further if the bird is moving particularly fast.

As a photographer, there's nothing quite as exhilarating as the feeling of discovering a new subject to capture. Recently, I had the pleasure of experiencing that exact sensation when I stumbled upon a group of Painted Buntings at Ashley River Park in Summerville, South Carolina.

At first, I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing. The birds were so strikingly colorful that they almost looked like they belonged in a tropical rainforest rather than a park in South Carolina. Their plumage was a kaleidoscope of bright blues, greens, and reds, and I knew immediately that I had to capture them on camera.

With my camera in hand, I crept closer to the tree line where the bird was on a nearby branch. I was able to snap several photos before it flew off. As I reviewed the shots on my camera's LCD screen, I was thrilled to see that I had captured the intricate details of their plumage.

Over the next hour, I continued to snap photos of the Painted Buntings as they flew from tree to tree. I experimented with different angles and lighting, trying to capture the perfect shot. At times, the birds would perch on a branch for a couple of minutes, allowing me to capture a series of shots from different perspectives.

As a photographer, I'm always on the lookout for new and interesting subjects to capture through my lens. This week, I decided to take on the challenge of photographing Osprey fishing. These incredible birds of prey are known for their unique fishing techniques, which involve plunging feet-first into the water to catch their prey. But capturing that perfect shot has proven to be quite challenging. Nonetheless, the experience has been truly fascinating, and I wanted to share a few of my favorite shots.

During a recent visit to Ashley River Park in Summerville, South Carolina, I had the opportunity to witness firsthand the remarkable hunting skills of an Osprey. As I observed the bird's behavior, I discovered that it was catching fish about once an hour to feed its chicks.

One thing that makes Osprey fishing so unique is their ability to adjust their talons in mid-air to catch fish in the most effective way. Osprey have sharp, curved talons that they use to grab their prey, but they also have reversible outer toes that allow them to grasp fish with two talons in front and two behind, giving them a more secure hold on their slippery prey.

Another interesting fact about Osprey fishing is their keen eyesight, which allows them to spot fish from high up in the air. Osprey can see fish from over 100 feet in the air, and they have a special membrane in their eyes that filters out glare from the water's surface, making it easier for them to see their prey.

As for my photography experience, I've found that the best time to capture Osprey fishing is during the early morning or late afternoon, when the light is softer and more golden. I've also learned that it's important to be patient and observe their behavior, as Osprey often hover above the water for several minutes before diving in for the catch.

One of my favorite spots in Yellowstone is the Grand Prismatic Spring. The vibrant colors of the spring, with its deep blue center and orange and yellow edges, make for an incredibly striking photograph. I like to capture the spring from a nearby hill that overlooks it.

Another must-see spot in Yellowstone is the Old Faithful geyser. While it can be crowded with tourists, the eruption of Old Faithful is always a spectacle that is well worth the wait. I like to get there early to find a good spot to set up my camera and capture the eruption from different angles.

The Grand Teton National Park is also home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. The Teton Range, with its jagged peaks and snow-capped summits, is a photographer's dream. I often take a hike to one of the nearby lakes, such as Jenny Lake or Jackson Lake, to capture the reflection of the mountains in the water.

One of my favorite times to photograph in these parks is during the golden hour, which is the hour before sunset or the hour after sunrise. The soft, warm light during this time of day is perfect for capturing the natural beauty of these parks.

Overall, Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks offer a wide range of opportunities for landscape photography. From the vibrant colors of the hot springs in Yellowstone to the majestic peaks of the Teton Range, these parks never fail to inspire me and my photography.

Yellowstone Wildlife May 2021

Photographing wildlife in Yellowstone National Park in May can be a truly breathtaking experience. As the snow melts and the weather warms up, the park's animals come out of hibernation and begin to roam the park's valleys and hills.

One of the most iconic animals to photograph in Yellowstone is the bison. These large, shaggy beasts can be found grazing in the park's grasslands and meadows. They are most active in the early morning and late afternoon, so try to plan your photography sessions around these times. Be aware that bison are wild animals and can be unpredictable, so be sure to keep a safe distance.

Another animal to look out for in Yellowstone is the elk. These majestic creatures can be found in the park's forests and meadows. They are most active during the mating season, which takes place in the fall, but can still be seen in May.

Grizzly bears and wolves are also present in the park, but they are elusive and harder to photograph. It's best to research the best locations and times to spot them. Ask other photographers and park visitors about recent sightings.

When it comes to equipment, a long lens is a must for photographing wildlife in Yellowstone. A telephoto lens with a focal length of at least 300mm is ideal for capturing close-up shots of the park's animals. A tripod is also useful for keeping your camera steady while shooting in low light.

Remember that you are in a national park, please follow all rules and regulations, and respect the wildlife. Do not approach animals too closely and always give them enough space.

Overall, May is a great time to visit Yellowstone National Park and photograph its amazing wildlife. With a little planning and patience, you can come away with some truly stunning shots.

Epic Iceland - July 2019

Iceland is a photographer's paradise, with its diverse landscapes and natural wonders. As soon as I landed, I was in awe of the rugged and raw beauty of the island. From the black sand beaches to the snow-capped mountains, Iceland is a photographer's dream come true. The first day I drove aroud the Golden Circle, where I was able to capture the stunning waterfall, Gullfoss. The mist and the rainbow that formed over the falls made for some truly magical shots. I also visited the Geysir hot springs, where I was able to capture the geysers erupting in the background.

One of the highlights of the trip was visiting the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. The vast expanse of ice and the way it sparkled in the sunlight was truly mesmerizing. I spent hours capturing the different shades of blue and the chunks of ice floating in the water. I also visited the Skaftafell National Park, where I was able to capture the stunning landscapes of the Vatnajökull glacier. The way the light played off the ice was truly breathtaking.

No photography trip to Iceland is complete without photographing Puffins. To photograph Iceland puffins, it is best to visit during their breeding season, which typically runs from mid-May to mid-August. The best places to see puffins in Iceland include the Westmann Islands, the Látrabjarg cliffs, and the Vatnajökull glacier national park. It is important to be mindful of the puffins' well-being and not disturb their nesting sites. A telephoto lens with a focal length of at least 300mm is recommended for capturing close-up shots of the puffins. Additionally, a tripod can be useful for keeping the camera steady.

Throughout the trip, I was constantly in awe of the natural beauty of Iceland. The landscapes and natural wonders that I was able to capture will be memories that I will treasure for a lifetime. It was a trip of a lifetime and I can't wait to go back and explore more of this beautiful country.

Botswana and South Africa Safari

I visited Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa in July 2018. I reached Johannesburg after a 17 hour flight from DC. All three countries have tons of elephants. Botswana river safaris are unique that you can get extremely close to very large animals via the boats. Below are my favorite photos from the trip.

When it comes to safari destinations in Africa, Botswana and South Africa are at the top of my list. These two countries offer different but equally breathtaking experiences, and I can honestly say that my trips to both have been some of the most memorable of my life.

I decided to visit the Chobe National Park in Botswana. I was in awe of the vast expanses of wilderness and the abundance of wildlife. The park is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, and many different types of antelopes and birds. As soon as we entered the park, we were greeted by a herd of elephants grazing on the savannah. It was amazing to see these majestic animals up close and in their natural habitat.

One of the highlights of the safari was the boat ride on the Chobe River. We saw crocodiles basking on the banks and hippos swimming in the water. The sunset over the river was absolutely breathtaking.

Next, I visited South Africa. This time, I decided to explore the Kruger National Park. Known as one of the largest game reserves in Africa, it is home to an abundance of wildlife including the Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros). I went on guided safari drives and walks, and I was amazed by the variety of animals I saw. From cheetahs, wildebeests, and zebras to the majestic Big Five, I saw it all.

Both Botswana and South Africa offer luxury safari experiences, with comfortable lodges and camps that provide all the amenities needed to make the most of your safari adventure. The best time to visit for both countries is the dry season which is from May to October.

If you're considering a safari in Africa, I highly recommend Botswana and South Africa. Both offer unique and unforgettable experiences that should not be missed. Whether you're interested in exploring the vast wilderness of Botswana or the diverse landscapes of South Africa, you're guaranteed to have an adventure of a lifetime.

Dubrovnik, Croatia is known to the world as Game of Thrones' Kings Landing. Dubrovnik, Croatia is a beautiful and historic city located on the Adriatic Sea. It is known for its well-preserved old town, which is surrounded by medieval walls and features Gothic and Renaissance architecture.

When you visit Dubrovnik, the first thing you'll notice is the Old Town. This UNESCO World Heritage site is surrounded by medieval walls and is home to Gothic and Renaissance architecture. The main street, Stradun, is a pedestrian-only zone that is lined with shops, restaurants, and cafes. You'll also find several historical landmarks such as the Dubrovnik Cathedral, Rector's Palace and Sponza Palace. The city walls are definitely a must-see, offering the most breathtaking views over the city and the sea.

Dubrovnik is also a great destination for foodies. Croatian cuisine is a mix of Italian, Hungarian, and Turkish influences, and Dubrovnik is home to some of the best seafood in the country. Some of the must-try dishes include fresh grilled fish, seafood risotto, and black risotto with cuttlefish. Dubrovnik is a magical city that should be on every traveler's bucket list. With its rich history, stunning architecture, and delicious cuisine, it's the perfect destination for a relaxing and unforgettable vacation.

Split, Croatia

Diocletian Palace's Peristyle

Split is a city in Croatia that boasts the well-preserved Diocletian's Palace, a Roman palace built in 305 AD as a retirement home for Emperor Diocletian. The palace still holds many ancient features such as the Temple of Jupiter, the Palace's peristyle and ancient Egyptian sphinxes. The palace also serves as a blend of the old and new as locals have built homes and businesses within its walls. Split's seaside promenade along the Adriatic Sea makes it an ideal starting point for a vacation in Croatia. I flew to Split directly from London. I took two days to explore the city before moving on to Plitvice Lakes National Park.

Plitvice Lakes National Park is widely considered one of the most stunning national parks in Europe. It is unique in that it is made up of 16 cascading lakes with travertine barriers in between, creating hundreds of waterfalls. A narrow boardwalk runs through the park, allowing visitors to explore the lakes and waterfalls.

Many people visit the park on guided day trips, however, I highly recommend spending at least two days in the park, as it is quite large and difficult to fully explore in one day. Additionally, guided groups tend to arrive in the park later in the morning and leave in the afternoon, making the park quite crowded during these times.

To make the most of your visit, I recommend following one of the trails suggested in the official park guide. However, instead of hiking uphill, as the guide suggests, try hiking in the opposite direction. This will make the hike easier, and you'll be able to avoid large groups of people. Additionally, starting and ending your hike in less crowded areas will enhance your experience. For lodging, consider staying at one of the several lodges located in the park. These lodges are situated on the upper lakes, and a short boat ride away from the lower lakes. They offer great locations, free parking, and free admission to the park after your first day, which can be validated for each additional day you stay. The best way to reach the park is by car, as the roads in Croatia are excellent and there is very little traffic outside of cities.

Before checking into your hotel, I suggest visiting a lookout point that is on the park's admission ticket. The viewpoint is accessible by car, with a short, level walk, and can also be reached by a strenuous uphill hike from within the park. To find it, set your GPS to the hotel you are staying at, and look for a dirt parking lot on the opposite side of the road. Follow the trail to the lookout point.

Leopard Taking Down Wildebeest

I've been fortunate enough to go on multiple safaris in Africa, but until my recent trip to the Masai Mara in Kenya, I had never witnessed a big cat taking down its prey. During the Great Migration in September, I had the opportunity to witness the incredible spectacle of over a million wildebeest crossing the Mara River as they search for greener pastures.

The migration, which starts in July and August and ends in September or October, is a truly breathtaking sight. Watching the wildebeest prance back and forth along the river's edge, sometimes for hours, before finally crossing as a herd is an unforgettable experience. In just 15 to 30 minutes, hundreds or even thousands of wildebeest will make the crossing, while crocodiles wait patiently for an easy meal.

On one occasion, while we were waiting for the wildebeest to make their crossing, one of the animals walked under a tree where a leopard was sleeping. Leopards are typically nocturnal, but when presented with an opportunity for an easy meal, they don't hesitate to take it.

Without warning, the leopard jumped out of the tree and onto the back of the wildebeest. It quickly grabbed the animal by the neck and suffocated it. A few seconds later, the wildebeest was on the ground and the leopard held on for about five minutes before dragging it off into the bush for an early dinner. It was an incredible and unforgettable experience to see this majestic animal in action.

Rwanda Gorilla Trek

Rwanda is home to one of the largest populations of mountain gorillas in the world. It is an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experience that requires a permit, which are limited and are expensive. The gorilla trekking experience can be challenging as it involves hiking through rough terrain but it is an unforgettable and unique experience.

I arrived at the headquarters of Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park in the early morning, where all gorilla treks begin. The weather was overcast with a chill in the air and the sun was just peeking over the mountain tops. The park service greeted us with hot coffee and traditional drumming, and as we waited for our trek assignments, we were entertained by cultural dancers.

Guides negotiated with various gorilla groups to determine which one we would trek with. As we waited anxiously, the golden monkey treks were assigned first. Eventually, we were assigned a gorilla group and met our guide near a sign with the group's family name.

Our guide drove us to the starting point of the trek, where we could hire a porter to carry our bags. Park rangers had already entered the park to locate the gorilla family. The trek began by walking through farmlands, and as we passed through a stone wall, we entered the dense jungle. For the first couple of hours, we followed trails, but then ventured off-trail to find the gorilla family. Park rangers cleared the way through the thick jungle with machetes and vines sometimes snagged our feet. The porters assisted us through the jungle, pointing out stinging nettles.

As we approached the location of the gorillas, I was filled with awe at the sight of these majestic animals. Their intelligence and gentle nature evoked feelings of empathy and respect in me. We were instructed to keep our distance and spend only an hour with them in order to minimize the impact on the gorillas. Despite this, several gorillas, including a baby, came close enough for to touch, of course that is not allowed.

One hour goes quickly, make sure you take time away from taking pictures to enjoy the experience.

Yellowstone May 29th thru June 5th

This is my 15th year visiting Yellowstone. I vividly remember seeing my first grizzly bear. The famous grizzly 264 with her 2 cubs. Unfortunately 3 years later she would have to be euthanized after being hit by an RV. Since my first visit I have seen and photographed numerous grizzly bears and other wildlife. I have visited every season including the months of February, May, June, July, September, and October.

This trip was probably my less productive as far as wildlife encounters. Some of my favorite wildlife encounters were actually outside the park around my cabin in Silver gate and along the Beartooth Highway.

I spent Saturday night in West Yellowstone before heading to my cabin in Silver Gate on Sunday. I spent a couple of hours in the park Saturday evening photographing a fox hunting near the fishing bridge turnout.

I decided to take the Norris to Mammoth route to Silvergate. Saw my first grizzly of the trip about a mile before the construction ends on the way to Mammoth. The grizzly had a good size wound on his back. Nice early morning sighting with only one other couple at the pull out. Too early for a bear jam.

I made a brief stop in mammoth to photograph the owls. They had left the nest but I spotted one on a nearby limb. I encountered my first bear jam in Little America. There were not any good photo opportunities but I enjoyed watching the a black bear with her cubs raid a bluebird nest. I do not know if they were successful but the bluebirds were very upset.

I finally arrived in Silver Gate. While unloading the car I spotted a moose with calf on the creek. Spent about an hour photographing them.

On Monday afternoon it looked like a storm was coming in over the park but there were blue skies

toward the Beartooth Highway. I headed that way. About 15 miles up I encountered two grizzly bears by the highway grazing and turning over rocks for food. Just a few cars were present and I got to enjoy photographing them for about 30 minutes before a motorcycle came by and scared them into the woods.

I continued up the Beartooth Highway and just pass Beartooth Lake Campground turnoff I spotted an owl nest with 2 chicks on the left side of the road. I took a few photos but it was starting to get dark.

On Tuesday I hiked to Trout Lake and photographed a muskrat gathering plants for its den. Later on Tuesday enjoyed several black bear sightings including a very large one by floating island lake pull off. Unfortunately, only had a couple of minutes to photograph before a ranger showed up an hazed the bear away.

Spotted a black bear near the northeast entrance Wednesday morning. That afternoon I went back to photograph the owl nest on the Beartooth Highway. Lighting was perfect at 3 PM. Shot at 400 mm with a 1.4 extender.

On Thursday evening watched a black bear stalk some bighorn sheep at the rear of the Yellowstone picnic area. They spotted him and he proceeded to chased them over the hill.

On Friday I headed down to the Grand Tetons. It was extremely crowded. Although the wildlife encounters were less this trip I still had another wonderful trip to Yellowstone. Scroll down for more photos from the trip.

2014 Year of the Black Bear

There are plenty of black bear cubs this year in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In early to mid August bears with and without cubs are easily spotted eating in wild cherry trees along Cades Cove loop road. Cades Cove is a valley in the Tennessee side of the park. Before the park was created the valley was home to hundreds of settlers. Some of their farms and churches have been preserved.

The best time to find bears in the cherry trees is early in the morning and sometimes late in the evening. Around noon they usually leave the trees into the woods to escape the heat. The cherry trees are located through out the valley but bears can often be seen in a group of trees by the entrance to the Elijah Oliver trail. This is where I spotted my first female with cubs.

After photographing the family of bears for a about an hour, I decided to hike to Abrams Falls. This is an excellent 5 mile round-trip hike. Most of the trail follows the creek. The beginning of the trail is fairly level but there are three moderate climbs and descents to reach the falls. As you start the hike your ears are engulfed by the sounds of the rushing river but as you ascend the water fades away to the quiet sounds of the woods. Although this is a popular trail you will probably not see anyone until you reach the falls.

On the way back I spotted another female with two cubs eating blackberries. I rarely see bears when hiking in the Smokies. Although they were close to the trail the bushes were very thick. I noticed that one cub had a white patch on his chest. This is the first time I saw a cub in the park with these unique markings. However, I've seen photos of black bears in other parts of the Appalachians with similar markings.

In the evening I returned to the cove for a short hike to photograph butterflies. On my way back I saw a female black bear eating about 100 feet where I had been standing. She totally ignored me. While leaving the valley at dusk I spotted several more bears walking through the fields. Bears are plentiful this year in the park. Although I was only in the valley for a day I saw several bears. I think 2014 is definitely the year of the Black Bear.
