Can’t decide which dessert to make for Thanksgiving? Or perhaps you’ll be too busy with the turkey and making a dessert would require four extra hands?

Well, relax, because our chef Sophia has several great Thanksgiving recipes that your children can whip up in no time! That’s right! This year, hand the mixing bowls and spoons to the kids, sit back, and enjoy! In this article, she agreed to share two: no bake express pumpkin pie and sweet potato muffins.

NO BAKE EXPRESS PUMPKIN PIE

Can’t find the time to make pumpkin pie from scratch? With this recipe, you just whip and serve!

INGREDIENTS

1 1/4 cup milk

2 small Cook & Serve vanilla pudding packets

1 cup unsweetened pumpkin filling

1 cup Cool Whip

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon allspice

1 ready-made Graham cracker pie crust

DIRECTIONS

1) In a small pot, mix together only 1 cup of the milk, pumpkin filling, and Cool Whip. Let it simmer over medium low heat.

2) In a small mixing bowl, mix together remaining ¼ cup of milk, along with the pudding packets. Add to the simmering mixture. Stir continuously until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes.

3) Pour thickened pumpkin filling into the prepared crust. Let cool to set. Serve with a dollop of Whipped cream and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

SWEET POTATO MUFFINS

These sweet treats are packed full of vitamins and fiber!

INGREDIENTS

3 medium sweet potatoes

3/4 stick unsalted margarine, cut into pieces

2 tablespoons brown sugar

2 tablespoons white sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder

DIRECTIONS

1) Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Grease a small muffin tin.

2) Puncture a few holes into the sweet potatoes and microwave until tender, about 10 minutes. With care, scoop cooked potato out of the skin, and transfer to a mixing bowl. Add margarine and mix with an electric mixer until well combined. Beat in sugar and spices, and let cool for 10-15 minutes.

3) Mix flour and baking powder together in a small bowl. Add to the potato mixture and mix well with a fork. Near the end, you may need to knead the batter by hand.

4) Fill each muffin tin cup with the batter. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Putu piring is like the cousin of Putu Mayam which I have previously blogged about; only this one is in solidified flour mould with fillings of gula melaka in the midst of some coconut flakes stuffing in the middle

It’s getting tough to find these nowadays, and we just came across it occasionally

We got this from a stall which was new and run by a family who were clearly not experienced in business, but at least it was not unusual anymore with someone ready to take this back into business…

An old traditional Indian rice flour cakes; which comes affordably at 35-50 cents per piece and a serving of 5 pieces only cost RM2, this definitely brings back the good old memories!

Parents want their children to have the best educational resources available. When it comes to piano lessons, however, many parents who don’t play aren’t aware of resources available for home use. Parent’s who do play the piano, however, are more likely to purchase piano materials for home use in addition to their child’s piano lesson assignments. This gives young kids an additional learning boost at home. If you don’t play the piano, or if you are a home-school parent, and want to give your children a musical foundation at home, don’t be deterred. Below are 3 Keys for helping your children get a good musical foundation at home that are as easy to use as following a recipe.

1. Look for resources that teach the basic ingredients of piano theory. Ignore unrealistic promises that avoid teaching children the basics they need for a solid musical foundation with “solutions” such as playing by colors or numbering the piano keys with stickers. Young children need to know their colors and their numbers to learn to play the piano, but not for this reason. Don’t underestimate your child’s intelligence. Avoid resources for home use with fantastical promises that substitute knowledge your children already have instead of teaching valuable, new skills.

2. Look for resources you can use at home as a prequel to enrolling your children in piano lessons or in conjunction with this. Giving your child a musical foundation at home is no different than teaching your children to read at home. Your children will need pre-skills and then foundational knowledge that builds on these skills. You taught your child the alphabet and their numbers and started teaching them how to read, and then you sent them off to school to learn even more. You can do the same thing in piano because music theory language is easy to see and hear on the piano keyboard. Since children absorb language so quickly, giving your child a musical foundation at home when they are young will support other learning processes and improve their overall educational progress.

3. Make your values clear to your children by purchasing a keyboard or piano for your home. Musical values are learned just like other good values you share with your children. Having a piano in your home when your children are young sends a powerful message that has a powerful affect. Children with this advantage grow feeling that “piano is part of our home.”

Add these simple ingredients to your child’s piano experience and you’ll have a recipe for improving your child’s musical success.

My 1 year old has turned into a picky eater…. but a funny one!?

It's funny. She's been a FEROCIOUS eater from day one. Now, she won't eat anything that feels “funny” on her hands. I gave her a piece of sliced turkey…. it stuck to her hands and she wanted NOTHING to do with it. She just kept shaking her hands trying to get it off. She won't eat macaroni and cheese or noodles or rice…. because they all feel funny on her hands. She just shakes them off and pushes the food away.

Did your child do that? Did you think it was funny? How long did it last? Thanks!

Zen World of Dim Sum sounded like a havenly place for breakfast and to be frank, the atmosphere from the whole concept of their interior design did seem to send the same message.

It looked like a really new place and an exciting restaurant to try dim sum.
We jumped straight in without bothering to check the prices, and I think that ,was a little bit of a mistake and turns out, there were more than what I had imagined.

For starters, we were surprised or rather, shocked to see that they were not ready with their dim sum yet at 8.00a.m. on a Sunday morning.
Varieties were kind of limited at that time too but problem solved, the staff and lady boss were eager to help us to heat up the food immediately.

We should have sensed trouble when there is not a lot of people patronizing the place despite it being a Sunday morning where most other restaurants would be buzzing with dim sum fans or family gatherings.

Steamed fishballs

Prawn dumplings (Har Mai in Cantonese) – RM4

Fried fishballs

Braised pork ribs

Har Kao/Prawn dumplings

This is the original prawn dumplings with this translucent white wrapping

Scallop with prawn dumplings

Chee Cheong Fun (Flat rice noodles with soy sauce and with roasted pork/prawn fillings)

Egg tarts

The total bill was about RM40-50++ with most of their dim sum priced at RM2.60 and above. I find that quite pricey if you ask me, as I have tried better dim sum at an even better price.

I guess that just vanquished the zen it was supposed to have huh?

Family mealtimes are always common in my family and we don’t really need to wait for Mother’s Day or Father’s Day for that matter.

Once in a while, we go out for dining, okay, maybe not once in a while or we won’t be getting this blog.
We just didn’t want Mummy to work hard in the kitchen and to relax herself, hence the dining outside.

We were just wondering what to have for lunch when we were in the newly opened Jusco in Mahkota Cheras and then we just decided to go for Secret Recipe.

There were set lunches available; with prices ranging from RM11.90-RM15.90

Fried crackers as appetizers; I believe this came along with one of the set lunches we ordered

Pumpkin soup (RM5.90)

Vietnamese Pho with beefballs

Sauce for the beefballs

Spaghetti with chicken meatballs

Black pepper chicken with rice

Time for desserts which is the origin of the name of this famous eating joint; originally known for their killer cakes; particularly cheese cakes which always end up in most birthday parties.

Duran duran

Obviously a durian cake; and I really hated this fruit, so enough said, I can’t review when I kept my distance away from this piece the whole way.

I cannot remember the name of this cake; but it was rich and it had interesting layers with nuts

An extra order; Carrot Cake

It was rather moist and thick with the slices of carrots and raisins in it.

The food quality is rather inconsistent across their outlets; there are times when I have had really bad food but this outlet was not bad and service was rather prompt too albeit the new staff they have.

I see we may be looking forward to more meals at Secret Recipe with the family since my parents kinda like the cakes here =)

Raising vegetarian children can be really challenging. You’re constantly finding substitutes for the dairy and protein groups. If you’re up to the challenge, and you think it’s best for your child, then do so. If you’re a mom who just wants to get your child eating more vegetables, then try any of these vegetarian kids recipes. They’re yummy, easy, and really healthy!

Vegetable Curry

Use eggplant, zucchini, potatoes, carrots, and squash. Chop these up into bite sized pieces and cook in some curry paste and coconut milk. It’s healthy, nutritious, and will get your kids used to spices. Start with a mild curry, and you can make it spicier as they get older. This is also a good chance to introduce them to Indian and Thai cuisine.

Spinach Ravioli

You can buy pre-made spinach ravioli or make the little pasta squares yourself. These are really fun to eat, and you can negotiate with younger picky children about how many squares should be eaten. You can also fill the ravioli with cheese or mushrooms. Top it off with a thick tomato sauce and some Parmesan cheese. This is a great way to sneak spinach into your child’s diet. Most children don’t appreciate spinach till their much older. Use these little squares to get them used to the taste!

White Bean Soup with Potatoes

This is an easy soup to make. Just chop some onions, tomatoes, potatoes, throw in some spices, some white beans and cover everything with water. You can use a large pot or a slow cooker. This dish is going to take a while to cook! Give it about two or three hours for ready to cook beans, and up to five hours for beans that you had to soak overnight. Beans are filled with protein, and this is a great substitute for children who are fussy about eating meat. The beans are soft and are much easier to chew that poultry or meats.

Vegetable Quesadillas

A really quick and easy recipe to make. Use two pieces of whole wheat tortilla and fill it with cheese and red and green bell peppers. You can toast this in the toaster till the cheese melts and glues it all together. Serve it with a home made salsa of chopped onions, chopped tomatoes, and chopped cilantro. Drizzle some sour cream on top and it’s ready to serve! This dish is great for kids because it’s colorful and tasty. It makes a great snack or a great side dish to a main course.

Grilled Vegetable Sandwich

Marinate some eggplant, zucchini, tomatoes, onions, and bell peppers in olive oil, balsamic vinegar, salt, and pepper. Grill these on a gas grill, coal grill, or grill pan. Once the vegetables are soft, put it on some toasted whole wheat bread or some toasted herb bread. It’s tasty, healthy, and your kids will love it! This makes for a great lunch. You can serve it with some home made French fries or oven baked potato chips.
