There is also Sylvared, which is Vaccuum stained Beech, both are some of the most beautiful wood flooring products you will ever see.

Right now you can buy 1 square meter of 22mm thick reclaimed beech Sylvaket in excellent condition for just £17.02 +vat. Brand new 22mm Sylvaket is priced from £61.99 in the main Mckay Flooring store. The cheaper 14mm thick is available from £52.99 new.

If you clicked any of the links to the new Sylvaket above you will see that it comes in Classic, Variation and Harmony, with Classic being the most expensive (and arguably the most beautiful) priced from £77.99.

Not everyone can afford to pay £77.99+VAT per square meter for their wood flooring, leaving Classic out of most people’s reach. Most of the reclaimed Maple you will see will have been lifted from dance and gym halls, as a result it will tend to have a thick layer of lacquer and often a dark appearance. Sand back those layers however, and you are looking at a very light wood.

Without stain Maple has an incredible shine when finished, and is excellent for making a room look bigger and feel warmer by reflecting the natural light.

In reclaimed flooring, Maple is popular for a number of reasons, but the main reasons are

History

Our Maple is mostly lifted from old schools and gym halls, many of which have rich history in the city

Availability

We tend to lift large amounts of Maple at a time, and so it is very rarely out of stock in plank form, however, we currently have some reclaimed Maple blocks lifted from the Kilmarnock Academy in stock

Value for money

The aforementioned thick layers of lacquer usually covering reclaimed Maple keeps the wood like new. This means that buyers of reclaimed Maple flooring get a nearly-new maple floor for a fraction of the cost of a new maple floor

Reclaimed Beech Flooring:

Beech is a gorgeous wood in its natural form, with so many variants in tone, and a gorgeous sound under foot. Anyone who has ever been to a modern sports hall will most probably have seen beech wood flooring, because most sports floors in the UK are created using Junkers Beech (and mostly laid and marked with sports lines by us).

Here are some of the main reasons for the popularity of Reclaimed Beech:

Cheap and Cheerful

Reclaimed Beech tends to be lifted with sports lines intact, and is sold cheaper as a result. Reclaimed Beech with sports lines is one of the cheapest reclaimed flooring products on the market

Availability

Again, we lift reclaimed Beech in bulk, and, because we are one of the UK's biggest sports flooring contractors we come across a great volume of reclaimed Beech. People tend to buy what they see and they nearly always see reclaimed Beech

Unique Designs

The sports lines are not considered a negative by everyone; designers, architects and the like have seen the potential to use the lines to create unique patterns and designs on the floor (see below)

We currently have reclaimed Maple and reclaimed Beech in stock, priced from £9.36 and £10.21 respectively. We can’t help but think (and hope being so in love with the stuff) that it is as much about the history of where the woods come from, as it is about the beauty of the wood and the value for money on offer.

Thus, we have decided that, forthwith we will start writing posts on this blog, and our other sites, detailing the history of some of the reclaimed flooring that we receive and subsequently sell.

Many will remember the Oak and Maple parquet blocks we brought in recently. Well, those blocks came from the prestigious Kilmarnock Academy.

Kilmarnock Academy dates back to the 1630s, when it was originally a local Burgh school. It became a school proper in 1807, and moved to its present location in 1898.

The school is recognised internationally, as being one of the few schools in the world to have educated, not one but two people who would go on to win the Nobel Prize (Alexander Fleming and John Boyd Orr). Other famous pupils have included Robert Colquhoun (artist), William McIlvanney (author), Lindsay McKenzie (actress), James Stevenson AKA 1st Baron Stevenson (businessman and politician) and Hugh Watt (1848 - 1921) MP.

The maple and oak blocks were lain in the hall of the Old Academy Hall, which is commonly called the Memorial Hall, because it houses the memorial to the pupils of the academy killed in WWI. The blocks formed a beautiful herringbone pattern (2/3 Oak, 1/3 Maple) with an E-block border. In fact, we recently came across the first UK website dedicated to buying people’s and demolition companies’ salvaged wood flooring – www.cash4woodfloors.co.uk

Reclaimed Junkers Oak a Rare and Wonderful Find – In Stock Now!!

It is not very often you will come across Junkers Oak in the reclaimed section, quite simply because most people who have a Junkers Oak floor tend to love and cherish it for a lifetime.

That said: we have been very fortunate to come into possession of not 1 but 3 batches of reclaimed Junkers Oak:

Junckers Oak Rustical 20.5mm - £12 per sqm

If reclaimed Junkers Oak is a rare and wonderful find then 20.5mm rustical Junkers Oak is a hen’s tooth. Those who know wood floors will know that 20.5mm is almost as deep as wood flooring gets, which means that for just £12 per sqm you can buy a floor that will last multiple sandings, and therefore a floor for life if properly looked after.

Junckers Oak 14mm - £12 per sqm

While not the deepest 14mm is still deep enough to withstand several goings-over with the sander, and will also last a lifetime if properly looked after. Again, to find such a gorgeous wood floor as Junkers Oak for £12 per sqm is a fantastic bargain, and one that won’t be around for long.

Reclaimed Wideplank Engineered Oak £12 per sqm

Again this is a fantastic find and a massive bargain at the price. Looking at the picture you can see that this is a lovely shade of Oak and is available in the wide plan variety. A wide plank oak floor is particularly special looking, and, because it is engineered it is suitable for use in areas with severe climatic changes and under floor heating.

Reclaimed Walnut Flooring… Be Still My Beating Heart

Regular readers of this blog will know that I confess my undying love for various types of wood flooring on a regular basis, but my love of walnut goes way beyond what I have for any other wood species.

This is because my love for Walnut started long before my love of wood flooring. When I was a youngster my dad bought me an air-rifle, and as I got older I wanted get a new one. He let me choose and I began looking, I quickly realised that I loved the rifles with Walnut barrels more than any of the others.

I bought a lovely little rifle with a walnut barrel, and every time I polished my little baby to a deep lustre my love of the walnut finish grew even more.

Now I love wood flooring, and particularly reclaimed flooring because of the affordability and value for money it offers, as well as the fact that it is helping the environment my kids will grow up in.

So now, to have the first batch of reclaimed Walnut flooring come into the showroom since I started with the company is like a dream come true. I have to tell you I was not disappointed, even in its current state; in need of sanding and sealing the beauty of the wood can still be seen and felt.

If I didn’t already have a gorgeous wood floor I would be buying this myself, and I would gladly get on my hands and knees to polish it just like I did my air rifle.

To find out more about the reclaimed Walnut, request a sample or to place an order click here or call 0845 602 7694

Whiskey Barrel Flooring: The Ultimate Reclamation from Mckay Flooring

The flooring, interiors and even the social media world (well, a small part of it at least) have been whipped into quite a frenzy over Mckay Flooring's new Whiskey Barrel wood flooring product.

The company has perfected a way to make flooring wood planks from round oak whiskey barrels, and, because of the hype their announcement created, has already laid the new flooring product in a Glasgow house.

This is reclaimed wood flooring in its truest form; wood that has served its original purpose, but can be reclaimed, recycled and reused as a new product. But it is better than that, because, in this case the recycled use of the wood is far better than its original use.

Old oak whiskey Barrels are great for storing whiskey, but lets face it they are pretty drab and boring. But as a quirky, retro wood floor with the whiskey branding still intact they are an absolutely unique idea, and something that most Scottish whiskey drinkers would probably love to have adorning their floors.

Because it is such a unique and new product, whiskey barrel flooring is currently being sold to order; anyone interested can order by calling 0845 602 7694 or emailing enquiries@mckayflooring.co.uk

New Batch of Reclaimed Maple a Piece of History

I have just been informed that there is a shipment of more lovely voluptuous reclaimed Maple currently on its way into our Govan showroom.

For those that were disappointed to find out that the last batch had sold out, get in quickly because the wood is to be sold at £20 per square meter and there is only 140 square meters – between 10 and 35 rooms depending on the size of the rooms – so it will go in no time.

For newcomers to the blog, reclaimed Maple is the bargain of the century as far as we are concerned. Few woods can match Maple in terms of its deep lustre and the body it gives a room, and as a result it is a very expensive wood to buy new, with the top brands costing over £100 per square meter. So, to get it in good condition as this is for just £15 per square meter is an awesome deal.

This batch of reclaimed Maple really does represent a piece of history, history of its own and history of the thousands of people who have walked, danced and sang atop it. The wood has been lifted from the church hall at St Margaret's Church Hall, Portland Street, Kinning Park, Glasgow.

The planks are 83mm wide by 20mm in depth, which adds to the value. For those that do not know why it adds value; the depth of the wood will determine how many times the floor can be sanded, which in turn equals the length of the wood floor’s life.

To order reclaimed Maple now click here>>> or call 0845 602 7694.

Reclaimed Maple Almost All Gone

Just to let you guys know, our reclaimed maple is coming to an end, so anyone who wants a gorgeous maple floor for less than the cost of a carpet (£12.50 per square meter) should visit the site and place their order online or by phone now.

I was compelled into this action, because I have just seen some new images that we have taken of reclaimed maple after it has been sanded and sealed, see below:

The image to the left shows reclaimed maple, before and after it has been sanded. We class this as reclaimed flooring, because it would otherwise be burned, but it is being reclaimed and recycled, in this case by Clyde Flooring.

The greatest thing about Storm Harvest flooring is that it allows people to make the environmental choice, but still get a 100% brand new wood floor. Unfortunately

If you want to find out more about Storm Harvest flooring call 0845 602 7694.

Reclaimed Maple Selling Like Hot Cakes (with Syrup?)

As always the reclaimed maple we currently have in stock is selling rapidly. In fact the current batch is selling faster than the previous batches, because it is priced lower; this batch is available for £12.50 per square meter, whereas before it was priced at £15.33 per square meter.

Anyone who is interested in buying some reclaimed maple should act quickly to avoid dissapointment.

Anyone who isn’t interested, why the heck not? Maple is one of the most gorgeous wood species, and as a floor it is truly luscious. The way it absorbs the light, and gives a room a depth and warmth it never had before is nothing short of spectacular.

Like all reclaimed woods, it has all the benefits of a wood floor, the prestige, the hygiene (no dust mites), the ease of cleaning and the value for money from it lasting a lifetime. Beech is such a light wood, and buying reclaimed beech really allows you to get back to what the wood is about.

When you buy reclaimed flooring, you have a bare wood floor. Ok, it is packed with character, and history, but it needs to be sanded back to the bare floor. This means that you can choose the floor you end up with.

When it has been sanded and sealed (not stained) beech is absolutely gorgeous. It has a kind of wholesome lustre to its shine, that will add another volume of light to any room. The sun is absorbed by the wood and shines back out even brighter and warmer.

But, what (I hear you say) about when it is winter again, after all, a wood floor is for life, not just for summer. Well, the same goes for firelight, be it the glow of a real wood fire or that of a living flame effect fire, that glow is absorbed into the floor and reflected all around the room.

Of course there are many wood floors with the same characteristics for reflecting light, but not so many which are so readily available and so affordable. We have reclaimed beech flooring with sports lines available from just £12 per square meter. Because we are the UK’s largest installer of sports floors, this type of reclaimed wood floor is practically always in stock in our warehouse. It is also available without sports lines.

One type of flooring with the same characteristics for reflecting light, and equally affordable is reclaimed maple, which we currently have in stock from £12.50 per square meter. Unfortunately this is less readily available so get in now if you’re interested.

Thinking about Buying a Reclaimed Wood Floor? Here is the Post for You

Many people who want real wood flooring, and who either can’t afford to buy new, or who care about the environment, reclaimed flooring is the perfect choice. However, many of those people are put off, some because they know the amount of work that is involved, and some because they have no idea of what is involved.

Reclaimed flooring from Mckay Flooring is wood flooring exactly as it was lifted, “nails an aw” as us Glaswegians like to say. Well, that is not exactly true, as we have started to take the nails out now, but some of the flooring we have in stock will need to be denailed, some of it will need a good clean, all of it will need sanded and sealed. Finishing (staining) is also a matter of personal choice.

The best advice I can give — and not just because I work for Mckay – is to have a quote for the floor to be fitted when you order it. Our team of professionals (our contractors, we never sub-contract) will come out and give you a comprehensive quotation on the work necessary to give you a floor as beautiful and shiny as a brand new wood floor.

Whether or not you decide to hire the pros or not, a good first step is to choose whether you want the natural look, or finished with a particular stain before being sealed. There are literally thousands of shades out there to choose from.

Obviously, if you decide to get the professionals in, then all you have to do is open the door and (not to be cheeky) try to stay out of the way. If not, you still have loads to do:

Firstly, if the wood still has nails in, you will have to remove them. The best way is to knock them through the wood by hitting the point with a hammer. You can either knock them all the way up and pull them out with your fingers, or knock them up a little bit so you can get the claw of a claw hammer in and pull them o-ut that way.

Next is to lay the floor. Mostly this is a case of joining tongues and grooves, and then nailing down the boards.

Then the floor needs to be sanded. You will want to hire an orbital sander to do this, and you can find full instructions here.

After sanding comes staining (if you have chosen to do so), full instructions for that can also be found here

Then it is sealing, again, full instructions for sealing are here.

By now, if you have done everything right, you will be looking at a gorgeous wooden floor, as shiny as if it had cost you four times the amount it did. Now it is a good idea to read this post, on how to care for your floor, to keep the need for sanding to a minimum.

<link rel="alternate" type="text/html" href="http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/ReclaimedFloorboardsWeLoveReclaimedHardwoodFlooring/~3/iUyHvxGFYV4/thinking-about-buying-reclaimed-wood.html" title="Thinking about Buying a Reclaimed Wood Floor? I know because of how quickly it sold out. Well… Anyone who missed out on the last batch should actually count their blessings, because we now have in some 57mm reclaimed maple for just £12.50 per square meter – a further saving of almost £3 per square meter.

Regular readers of this blog will know that my love of reclaimed maple knows almost no bounds. It is one of the most beautiful species of wood flooring, and usually one of the most expensive as well. But laminate and engineered flooring is equally affordable. Thus, for those on a budget it can often be difficult to decide what type of flooring is right for them.

Basically reclaimed wood flooring is perfect for people who would love to have new wood flooring but can’t afford it, or who want to be ecologically responsible.

If you have kids (note the plural) and want real wood flooring you have probably already considered the potential for damage; with new hardwood flooring being expensive to repair/replace. So, reclaimed flooring could be a solution there, because if it gets damaged then it will not be such a big pain in the wallet.

That said; laminate flooring is actually the best option in households where kids are going to be growing up. Laminate flooring is basically a laminated picture of a wood floor plank, covered by high-tensile plastic, which makes it pretty much kid-proof.

Also, if you live in an area prone to rapid and frequent temperature changes, then engineered flooring is the better option, because it copes better with the expansion and contraction caused by such circumstances.

Apart from that reclaimed flooring is definitely perfect for those who want a real wooden floor on a budget. Buying reclaimed flooboards from Mckay Flooring is buying wood floors which still have a lifetime in them if properly cared for. The great thing is that you get to choose whether you want the natural sanded and sealed look, or a choice of a wide range of finishes.

Mckay Flooring has almost sold out of its most recent lots of reclaimed flooring, here is what they have left:

Reclaimed Junkers Beech :-

Reclaimed high grade Junkers Beech, absolutely gorgeous.

With sports lines :- £12 per sqm –> Find Out More>>>

Without sports lines :- £15 per sqm –> Find Out More>>>

Reclaimed Opepe :- £14 per sqm

Reclaimed Opepe comes covered in a thick lacquer, which it adorned for the length of its previous life.
