In order to lose a pound in a week’s time, you need to tilt your calorie balance in the negative direction by about 500 calories per day.  Since a pound of fat stores about 3500 calories, if you burn up 500 of those stored calories every day for a week, you’ll lose about a pound of fat.  Larger people can often tip the balance a little further – coming up with a shortage or 750 or even 1000 calories a day to lose a bit more quickly. &amp;nbsp;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;blockquote class="tr_bq"&gt;Depending on your body size, that means that if you start now, you could lose 5 or 10 pounds by early June and that could be enough to give you a beach body by the start of summer.  And, with a one-two punch of diet and exercise, six weeks is enough time to see some noticeable changes in your muscle tone and shape if you dedicate some serious time to your workouts. &amp;nbsp;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;blockquote class="tr_bq"&gt;Ready to start?  Here are some diet tips to help you look your best by summer.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;blockquote class="tr_bq"&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;The best way to create your calorie ‘shortage’ is with a combination of diet and exercise.  Don’t try to just do one or the other. For one thing, those whose calorie needs aren’t that high to start with may not be able to cut out 500 calories a day from their meals without cutting back too far (you shouldn’t go much below 1200 calories a day).  And, if you try to cut too much, not only is it harder to pack all your nutrient needs into fewer calories – you may not have enough energy to exercise.  Trying the ‘exercise only’ approach is tough too, because it takes a lot of exercise burn up 500 calories – like a solid hour of nonstop swimming.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Focus on eating the most ‘nutrient dense’ foods – those foods that give you the most nutrition for the fewest calories per bite.  Vegetables top the list, followed by the lowest fat proteins (fish and shellfish, poultry breast, egg whites, fat-free dairy products, protein powder), followed by fruit and then whole grains.&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Make sure to include some protein at every meal and snack. You don’t want to cut them completely, but cutting back to just a serving or two each day can help you save a lot of calories.  As long as you’re eating plenty of veggies and fruit, you should be getting enough carbohydrates to fuel your exercise.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;Careful calorie counting is key, but it’s often one of the hardest things to do.  This is why meal replacements work so well – they take the guesswork out of calorie counting because you know exactly how many calories are in them.  Have a protein shake made with milk and fruit for two meals a day, then focus on veggies and protein for your third meal. What we usually do is prepare enough steamed rice and cooked pasta for the whole week. Then, we select the vegetables and fruits that we want to eat that week. We usually buy our favorites:&amp;nbsp;broccoli&amp;nbsp; cauliflower, carrots, potatoes, lettuce, spinach, mushrooms; our favorite fruits are: bananas, apples, pineapple, grapes, and oranges. I eat this three times a week, I just love it!)&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ol&gt;&lt;div&gt;And we add fruit to our diet. Every day we eat a fruit salad as dessert. Very simple, nothing complicated or fancy. This fat responds to female hormones, and in every menstrual cycle right after ovulation there is a one thousand-fold increase in the blood levels of the female hormone, progesterone. So when women believe they are &lt;b&gt;gaining&lt;/b&gt; small amounts of weight in addition to being bloated  – they are right! The body is preparing for pregnancy by developing the fat organ in the hips and thighs and it grows much more if a woman becomes pregnant due to the large amounts of estrogen and&amp;nbsp;progesterone produced by the placenta. A considerable number of calories must be stored, since breast milk production normally requires about 500 calories per day.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The main factor accounting for female obesity is &lt;b&gt;weight gain after pregnancy&lt;/b&gt;. Women typically gain between 30 and 40 pounds during pregnancy. If they do not breast feed or diet in the six months after delivery, the weight gained during pregnancy is not&amp;nbsp;lost. The next pregnancy starts at a higher weight and more weight is gained with the third pregnancy&amp;nbsp;and so on. There is nothing wrong with lower-body fat, except that our modern society has labeled it as bad. This was never the case in the history of man prior to past four decades. Women with lower body fat were always in demand, and biology reflected what was desirable. The problem, however, is that &lt;u&gt;this fat tends to be more resistant to diet and exercise&lt;/u&gt;, and there are many women who starve themselves trying to lose this fat. I was losing an average of 3 lbs. per week. My heart rate was 130 bpm, while at rest; this means that my metabolism was really fast, causing me to lose weight really fast. My appetite increased tremendously but I couldn't hold anything in; I experienced nausea, vomit, and diarrhea after each meal. My hair started to fall out and I just continued getting weaker. Many of these symptoms overlap symptoms experienced during&amp;nbsp;withdrawal from drug&amp;nbsp;abuse; many&amp;nbsp;of my symptoms were also similar to those seen in bipolar disorder and eating disorders, such as bulimia and anorexia. It took almost three months&amp;nbsp;for the doctors to figure out what was happening to me. It was a real nightmare. It was really scary for me to go through all of this and not knowing what was causing it. I was experiencing many disorders at once: addiction, bipolar, and eating disorders. For the first time I was able to&amp;nbsp;understand what people with addiction, bipolar, and eating disorders go through. The cause of Graves disease is not known. After almost three months of living like this, without the appropriate treatment, I just saw things getting worse for me. I talked to my family about preparing mentally, emotionally, and financially for my death. However, I was not ready to go. I wanted to stay, to get better and help people who suffer from different disorders. I thought that maybe I was supposed to go through something like this so I can understand people better and provide the best support I can give them. I learned many things about being powerless, hopeless, scared, sad, and wishing to get a second chance to live. This way of thinking helped me not to become a bitter person; it kept me from thinking that it was so unfair it was happening to me, when I had not done anything to get so sick. When I was ready to go back home to spend my last months with my family, in Mexico, I was referred to a doctor with many, many years of experience treating people with thyroid disorders. I received the right treatment and my recovery began. At the same time, my mom was starting her business as an independent distributor of Herbalife products. She introduced me to the products and, with the approval of my doctor, I started using the supplements and vitamins.
