 The patient populations Occupational Therapists (OTs) and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs) serve range from pediatric (infancy through adolescence) to adult to geriatric.  OTs and COTAs impact their patients’ mental and physical health; ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs); ability to perform the essential functions of their jobs or improve ability to obtain employment and to manage the aging process. This is achieved through clinical interventions, often in conjunction with other rehabilitation therapies such as physical or speech therapy in a multidisciplinary team approach. 

The various settings OTs and COTAs work to bring their patients to their highest level of function can include schools, mental health facilities/settings, acute care/hospitals, long term care/skilled nursing or outpatient facilities.  The requirement for Occupational Therapy interventions may result from genetic disabilities, cognitive or physical impairments due to disease or injury, even job related work hardening requirements.

The need for Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants continues to grow as our population ages and as evidenced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ prediction that occupational therapist job vacancies are expected to increase 33 percent and occupational therapy assistant vacancies will increase 41 percent from 2010 to 2020.  The educational requirements and certifications ensure that therapists meet industry standards and provide evidence based therapy interventions to positively impact their patients’ lives.

COTAs earn an Associate’s degree in Occupational Therapy, must be licensed by the state where they are employed and work under the supervision of the Occupational Therapist.  The entry educational requirement for the Occupational Therapist is a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy; however, some OT programs also offer Doctorate level degrees in Occupational Therapy.  OTs obtain certification through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT), a not-for-profit credentialing agency for occupational therapy professionals, in addition to the required state licensure.  Specialized training and various certifications such as Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) offer patients access to Occupational Therapy professionals who are equipped to address their needs at the highest level, improve clinical outcomes and functional levels.

Heart disease and heart health affects everyone…infants, adolescents, teenagers, young adults and seniors alike. The heart is the center of everything in the body, and if not healthy, there is a domino effect.  Many of us do not pay attention to the guidelines for prevention of heart disease and often ignore symptoms indicating something is wrong until the situation is critical, or even too late. I typically am one of those people who tends to rationalize any unusual symptoms as “nothing”, not wanting to run to the doctor’s office needlessly. 

In November, I convinced by myself that my “needless” trip to the cardiologist was worth the sense of well being knowing everything was fine and no need to worry.  Ultimately, that needless trip to the doctor resulted in surgical intervention to regulate my heart.  I am thankful that this time I paid attention to what my body was trying to tell me, that something is not right.  It goes without saying that my heart health will be a major focus in my life. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in conjunction with the US government’s Health and Human Services (HHS) launched an initiative back in September, 2011 called Million Hearts™ to help give people the knowledge to make heart-healthy choices and prevent heart disease, the nation’s leading killer.

The Million Hearts™ has enlisted participation and commitments from major healthcare organizations, both private and public, to advance initiatives in cardiovascular disease prevention. The CDC outlines how you can protect yourself and loved ones by following some basic guidelines.

• Engage in physical activity for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week.
• Know and practice your ABCS:

                        Check with your doctor if you should take an Aspirin every day.
                        Get checked for high Blood pressure or Cholesterol and seek treatment if either or both are high.
                        If you Smoke, seek help to quit.

Equally important is that we all eat a heart-healthy diet that is low in sodium and trans fat and includes healthy foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables.
