LOXAHATCHEE — Seminole Ridge senior linebacker Ty Jackson and senior offensive lineman Daniel Pierre Louis are both heading to Gainesville. The pair of teammates signed with the University of Florida during a school ceremony on Early Signing Day on Wednesday.

Jackson, a four-star linebacker, finished his high school career at Seminole Ridge as the school-record-holder in tackles. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior is ranked No.12 at his position, No. 19 in the state and No. 123 nationally in the Class of 2025 in the Composite 247Sports rankings.

(Alex Kushel, Contributor)

“It’s definitely a blessing and I am just grateful to have the opportunity to play football at a D-1 level,” Jackson said. “It started from when I was young with a good foundation and my family keeping me motivated. I never stopped working.”

Jackson was limited on the field during his senior season due to a hamstring injury. He registered 135 tackles with four forced fumbles, two sacks and two interceptions during his junior season. He had 137 tackles during his sophomore year and 106 tackles in his freshman campaign.

Jackson had originally committed to USC this past September. He decommitted in late November after he took a visit to Florida during their win against Ole Miss. Jackson announced he would be joining the Gators on Nov. 25.

“I want my family to be up there and support me and it helps with the travel distance,” Jackson said. “They will be getting a talented, motivated, hard-working, all-around player. I am looking to ball out, continue to develop more and will be coachable when I get there.”

Jackson will graduate from high school in December and will enroll at the University of Florida in January. He was selected for the Under Armour All-America Game.

(Alex Kushel, Contributor)

Pierre Louis, a three-star interior offensive lineman, is the No. 56 player at his position and No. 107 in the state in the Class of 2025 in the 247Sports Composite rankings.

“It just means everything to me and an amazing achievement,” Pierre Louis said. “I put myself out there by going to camps and trusted the process. It’s amazing to see all my hard work pay off.”

The 6-foot-4, 290-pound senior guard had committed to Florida State this past October. He decommitted after his official visit to Florida in November and announced he would join the Gators.

“It’s really the environment at Florida and the resources they have academically and athletically,” Pierre Louis said. “The culture of the school fits for me. It’s a great feeling to have a teammate with you. We are going to push each other and keep working to get better.”

The Gators, under the direction of third-year coach Billy Napier, had a three-game winning streak to close the regular season. The late season turnaround helped to flip several committed players in the last month. Florida had entered Early Signing Day with the No.11 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports rankings.

Student-athletes, ranging in sports from football players to equestrians and rowers, from around Broward and Palm Beach counties signed their national letters of intent on National Signing Day on Wednesday.

St. Thomas Aquinas led the way with 40 signees, which included a half-dozen football players who signed on early national signing day in December. In Palm Beach County, American Heritage-Delray recognized 23 signees Wednesday morning.

St. Thomas Aquinas senior Khadee Hession, signed with Georgetown University to play basketball. She committed on Dec. 18.

“I am very excited,” said Hession, who is averaging 19.2 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the 16-9 Raiders. “I’ve worked for this for years and my work finally paid off and I’m glad that I can go to such a great school to keep playing. I also enjoyed sharing the spotlight with other athletes because I know how much work everyone puts in to get to where they are.

“It felt like family immediately and that’s what I wanted,” she added. “I wanted a great environment where I know if I’m going through anything, I know I’ll have family away from home.”

The sports ran the gamut, including football, basketball, track and field, tennis, softball, baseball, equestrian, rowing, track and field, soccer, lacrosse, beach volleyball, bowling, golf, diving, swimming, tennis, and volleyball.

Despite playing football for just two years, American Heritage-Delray senior kicker Jake Weinberg, last season’s Lou Groza Award winner for the top placekicker in Palm Beach County, signed his letter of intent with FSU.

“I wanted to go to a school that believed in me the most,” said Weinberg, who connected on a season-best 57-yard field goal and excelled as a placekicker and punter. “The reason why I chose FSU is because of the culture and coaching staff. The program is on the right track and Coach (Mike) Norvell is just getting started. The whole staff believed in me and recruited me hard. Being in Tallahassee felt like home to me.

“I am super excited to sign with all of my friends and I can’t wait to go up there and play,” said Weinberg, one of five Palm Beach County athletes headed to FSU.

The other local athletes headed to Tallahassee are Jayden Parrish (Atlantic), Ricky Knight III (Cardinal Newman), Amaree Williams (Benjamin) and Luke Douglas (Jupiter).

American Heritage-Delray classmate Anthony Tralongo signed his national letter of intent to play baseball at Auburn University.

“It was a busy recruiting process, but once I went to Auburn, I knew it was home,” said Tralongo, who batted .317, with 2 home runs, 18 runs scored, and 11 RBIs for the Stallions.

Cooper City’s Natalie Villalon is headed to the University of North Florida to play beach volleyball. After giving up gymnastics at age 12, she started playing indoor volleyball and wound up landing a D1 scholarship.

“When I first started, it was just for fun,” Villalon said. “Then about a year and a half later, I started to take it more seriously. This is a very important day. It has been a goal and a dream of mine to play at a D1 school since I was 14, and I am going to do that. It’s truly amazing.”

Football's early-signing period begins on December 20.

With Florida High School Athletic Association postseason tournaments in the fall sports in full swing, many local student-athletes in both Broward and Palm Beach County signed early National Letters of intent on Wednesday.

Like many other high school seniors around South Florida, many put ink to paper, locking in their college choices.

“Signing day is something that I’ve really been looking forward to for a while,” said Benjamin golfer Tyler Bruneau, a who signed a NLI with the University of Rhode Island. “Today was definitely a huge stress reliever and very exciting. I really enjoyed the ceremony that Benjamin did for us and being able to sign with my teammates and classmates was a great experience.

“I chose the University of Rhode Island because of Coach (Gregg) Burke’s amazing track record of producing great golfers and running an amazing program,” Bruneau added. “The kids that are on the team are definitely a huge driving factor as to why I went there, as is the campus and the area it is in. Also being near the area that I am from and grew up in was also a factor.”

National letters of intent can be signed by Division I basketball programs as well as other Division I and Division II sports.

Division I football (early period) as well as Division I and Division II (mid-year JC transfer) is held on December 20. Division I and II Football (regular period) is February 7, 2024. The regular period for Division I basketball is April 17, 2024.

Pine Crest’s Brooke Hooper is headed to Florida State University to run both cross country and track. The talented long distance runner hasn’t been able to compete this year after suffering injuries to both her knee and hamstring.

“Signing to FSU definitely brings me much joy that I haven’t been able to experience through running and competing, said Hooper, who won the state title in the mile in track and eighth in cross country last season.

“I am very grateful to be given this opportunity,” Hooper added. “It is a dream come true to continue my academic and athletic career at FSU. I have wanted to go to FSU ever since I was young, so I am very excited to sign. It does take the pressure off now that I know my home for the next four years.”

Oxbridge Academy senior Tyler Lamm has decided to continue his sailing career at Brown University in the fall in Providence, R.I. Lamm selected Brown for their top nationally ranked sailing team, as well as the freedom they offer with an open academic curriculum. Lamm was one of seven student-athletes at Oxbridge to sign on Wednesday.

Lamm and his younger brother, Drew, a sophomore, won the U.S. Youth Championship for the second year in a row in Newport, R.I., this past summer. The victory in the four-day regatta qualified them to represent the U.S.A. in the Youth Sailing World Championships (U19 Olympics) in Búzios, Brazil in December.

St. Thomas Aquinas running backs Stacy Gage and Jordan Lyle both hold Hurricanes offers, and Miami could make a strong pitch to the Broward County stars.

FORT LAUDERDALE — When recruiting the 2023 class, Hurricanes coaches reached into Broward County and secured a pair of local running backs: American Heritage’s Mark Fletcher and Dillard’s Chris Johnson.

Miami already has one Broward County running back committed in its 2024 class — South Broward standout Chris Wheatley-Humphrey. Two more South Florida running backs, St. Thomas Aquinas’ Stacy Gage and Jordan Lyle, could also end up in UM’s class.

“They do a great job of complementing their strengths and weaknesses, as well,” St. Thomas coach Roger Harriott said.

Both Raiders running backs are rated four-star prospects in 247Sports’ composite rankings. Gage is listed as the No. 16 running back in the class, while Lyle is No. 27. Both hold Miami offers.

“It’s me, Stacy and (Tyrique Williams),” Lyle said. “All three of us, we’re all going to have a great season this year. We’re all planning on working hard. That’s what we’ve been doing so far. Stacy, he’s been getting his head together and he’s becoming a great leader.”

Lyle was the Raiders’ leading rusher as they rolled to the Class 3M state title, running for 1,015 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. Gage is new to St. Thomas, having transferred from Tampa Wharton High. Gage rushed for 704 yards and 14 touchdowns at Wharton last year. He previously played for Bradenton powerhouse IMG Academy.

Though Lyle has a UM offer, he already made his college commitment, choosing Ohio State over Miami and other teams in April. However, he did say he sees “the potential in what they have going on” at Miami.

“It was just the family bond from the coaches, from my family liking the coaches, to the fan base,” Lyle said of Ohio State. “Everything was just like a family. Also, I feel like I can be a really good fit there. And I was looking at the running backs, and they uplift each other and they work hard. I like that. That’s my type of environment.”

Gage, on the other hand, is still considering the Hurricanes and has not made a commitment. In addition to Miami, he has offers from Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, USC and more.

“Me and Miami are tight,” Gage said. “I just can’t wait to get back on campus. I’ll most definitely take an official there.”

Gage said he speaks to UM coaches frequently, including first-year Miami running backs coach Tim Harris Jr. In addition to wanting to take an official visit to Miami, he said he wants to see how Fletcher performs in his first year with the Hurricanes. If he does well in his opportunities, Gage said it might make playing at Miami even more appealing.

“I want to see how he (fits in with) the staff, with the culture and stuff like that,” Gage said. “How he can get developed there quick because I want to be a quick-impact guy. … I just want to see how other guys do so it can open my eyes.”

Hurricanes wide receiver commit Chance Robinson has kept his strong relationship with Miami coaches following his April commitment.

FORT LAUDERDALE — When St. Thomas Aquinas star wide receiver Chance Robinson committed to Miami at the Hurricanes’ spring game on April 14, he was one of only two skill-position players committed to UM.

Miami had a wave of commitments following Robinson, but the Raiders star said he is still receiving a lot of attention from Hurricanes coaches, and not much has changed in terms of his relationship with the Miami staff.

“Same thing, same way,” Robinson said. “Love, trust, talking to coach (Mario) Cristobal almost every other day, coach (Kevin) Beard, staying in contact with everybody. That’s family.”

Robinson said he speaks about “everything” with UM coaches, and he said he likes what he sees from the Hurricanes’ new offense under coordinator Shannon Dawson.

“I know a lot about the offense,” Robinson said. “I went to the spring game. Everybody can be versatile. I feel like I can do both. I can play outside, I can play inside. Wherever they need me. I’m happy it’s an Air Raid offense, they’re throwing the ball down the field and just throwing the ball everywhere. I like that.”

Although Robinson had a wide variety of college options, he chose the hometown Hurricanes over offers from Alabama, Auburn and Florida State, among others. The St. Thomas standout is rated a four-star prospect in 247Sports’ composite rankings, and he is listed as the No. 23 wide receiver and No. 150 player in the class. Robinson is currently the top-rated player in Miami’s 2024 recruiting class.

Last season, Robinson had 29 catches for 540 yards and 13 touchdowns and was a first-team All-County selection in 2022 after helping lead the Raiders to the Class 3M state title.

“His best days are ahead of him,” St. Thomas coach Roger Harriott said. “Chance is a great leadership asset. He’s really grown into the role. It’s nice to see that he’s matured, both physically and mentally and more importantly, spiritually.”

Robinson said he wants to see the Hurricanes improve on their 5-7 record from last season. In the meantime, he has been in touch with Miami’s group of commits, encouraging them to get ready for their time in Coral Gables.

“I talk to them a little bit and just let them know (when) we come in, it’s just time to work,” Robinson said.

South Broward standout running back Chris Wheatley-Humphrey commits to Miami Hurricanes.

The Miami Hurricanes are getting into a groove on the recruiting trail, picking up their third commitment in four days.

Miami added South Broward running back Chris Wheatley-Humphrey to its 2024 class. The rising senior running back announced his commitment on his Twitter account.

“It feels great,” Wheatley-Humphrey told the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “I’m very excited, very happy. I can’t wait to step foot on campus as an official player.”

Wheatley-Humphrey is the fourth member of the Hurricanes’ 2024 class and the third to commit in recent days. St. Thomas Aquinas four-star wide receiver Chance Robinson committed after Miami’s spring game on Friday, and defensive back Dylan Day joined the group on Sunday.

Wheatley-Humphrey has visited UM multiple times this year, most recently for Miami’s spring game.

“I just like the culture and everything about Miami,” Wheatley-Humphrey said. “I like the coaches; we had a good connection.”

The South Broward running back started building a relationship with running backs coach Tim Harris Jr. when he was still coaching at UCF. When Miami hired Harris, he kept recruiting Wheatley-Humphrey.

“When he switched, he texted me the next day,” Wheatley-Humphrey said, “just saying, ‘Everything lines up for a reason.’ And I agree.”

Wheatley-Humphrey was an All-County honorable mention as a junior, racking up 1,116 yards and eight touchdowns on only 70 carries. He also had a touchdown catch. He said his goal for his senior season is to double his production from last year.

“They’re getting a scatback,” Wheatley-Humphrey said. “They’re getting a real player, a great player, a player that’s going to change everything.”

The South Broward running back is rated a three-star prospect by 247Sports’ composite rankings, which list him as the No. 59 running back and No. 752 player in the class. He chose Miami over offers from Cincinnati, Florida State and UCF, among others.

The Hurricanes have had success pulling running backs from Broward County recently, signing American Heritage’s Mark Fletcher and Dillard’s Chris Johnson in the 2023 class.

Wheatley-Humphrey said he is looking forward to helping grow UM’s 2024 class.

“I’m going to help the out, for sure,” he said. “I know a few kids. Whatever I can do to help, I’m going to do it.”

Quarterback Jaden Rashada and center Knijeah Harris spent five days together for the Under Armour All-America game before heading to Gainesville to become Florida teammates.

The soon-to-be Gators have their whole careers ahead of them.

Monday night’s harrowing collapse of Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin also reminded the two teens nothing in football or life is certain.

“It takes a toll on you,” Harris told the Orlando Sentinel after his team’s 14-7 loss Tuesday at Camping World Stadium. ‘This is a sport you love. You see how fast it can get taken away from you.

“Life is precious.”

Harris, who signed with Florida on Dec. 21 out of Bradenton’s IMG Academy, said he passed a TV screen at the time of the incident and was confused by the scene at Cincinnati’s Paycor Stadium.

Bills players knelt in a circle as Hamlin exited the field in an ambulance after medical personnel administered CPR to the 24-year-old who suffered cardiac arrest following a tackle.

Team Speed quarterback Jaden Rashada, who is committed to Florida, looks to throw during the Under Armour Next All-American Game at Camping World Stadium on Tuesday.

“That was crazy. It just goes to show, you never know when your last snap is,” Rashada said. “The dude was out here doing what he loves most. You always got to send prayers and wish his family the best. I believe God has his hand over him.

“But that’s definitely tough seeing someone who loves the game so much to have something so unfortunate happen. It’s like, ‘Dang, that can happen to you’ — and never take things for granted.”

Rashada and Harris were among 110 of the nation’s top high school players in Orlando, including six from the area and 23 from the Sunshine State.

The experience brought together young men bound for more than three dozen colleges, ranging from Hawaii to Penn State, from Miami to Washington.

Yet, a bond materialized over the course of five days.

Defensive tackle Kelby Collins, a Florida signee from Alabama, can only imagine the impact of Hamlin’s collapse. The sixth-round pick in 2021 out of Pittsburgh remains hospitalized in critical condition.

“Just being here for a week, if something happened like that on the field everybody would be crushed because we built that bond in such a little time, spending a hard day at practice, just chilling in the hotel,” Collins said. “The bond football creates no matter what race you are, no matter what you look like, it’s amazing. To have something happen like that, the Bills and Bengals were both shaken up. Both sides were crying.

“It’s really tight in football.”

Team Phantom receiver Johntay Cook II (2) runs past Team Speed cornerback Ryan Yaites (right) during the Under Armour All-American Game at Camping World Stadium.

Former NFL players Jeff Blake and Pepper Johnson developed lifelong ties during their long careers. Each also witnessed the price paid to play such a physical sport.

Johnson, a two-time Pro Bowl linebacker during 13 NFL seasons, recalled the spinal cord injury suffered by former teammate Reggie Brown in 1997 with the Detroit Lions. The incident left him paralyzed, unconscious, unable to breathe and near death on the field.

“It wasn’t like me pulling a quad tendon or a guy tearing an ACL where he can repair and come back,” said Johnson, now 58 and Brown’s teammate in 1996. “That’s how the game is. It’s hard.”

During a 14-year career at quarterback, Blake saw many players carted off the field but never witnessed CPR performed on someone.

“I’ve never seen anything like that,” he said. “It kind of takes the meaning of playing the game out of it. At the point it’s not even worth playing the game as far as I’m concerned — a life is more important than the game.”

The NFL canceled the Bills-Bengals game pitting two of the league’s top teams and do not plan to reschedule the contest.

Nebraska-bound cornerback Ethan Nation of Georgia said football was far from his mind as he saw Hamlin motionless on the field.

“It was horrific. You’re kind of speechless,” he said. “You’re praying for him and his family, anyone involved in that situation. It’s scary. I hope they can figure out what’s wrong with him. I hope God gets him through it.

“Let’s hope he makes a really speedy recovery.”

Tuesday night was meant to be a high-scoring, all-star event for the top high school athletes in the country as they took the field for the Under Armour All-America game.

What it turned into was the lowest scoring game in recent memory as Team Phantom beat Team Speed 14-7 at Camping World Stadium.

While the offensive performance was not the most exciting, Edgewater running back Cedric “CJ” Baxter did score the first touchdown of the game, hitting an outside run from 13 yards out. It was one of three touchdowns in the second quarter, the only quarter either team produced any scoring.

Defensively, the game was a chance for many local players to show out. John Walker, the Osceola defensive tackle committed to UCF, held the line while Lake Brantley’s Michael and Andrew Harris were two of the leading tacklers for the game.

“It was really fun,” Walker said of the experience, “I’m glad I went against good competition to see where my skill levels are. I had a pretty good week of practice. I just really enjoyed my time being over here and meeting new people.”

The Harris twins were originally committed to UCF before defensive coordinator Travis Williams left for Arkansas and have re-opened their recruitment. UCF is still in the running for landing the two linebackers, who didn’t sign with anyone during the Early Signing Period last month. They’ll make up their minds no later than the regular period that opens Feb. 1.

Walker mentioned that he was talking to the two this week, hoping to win back their commitment for the Knights.

“I’m working on it. I’m really working on it,” he said. “That’s all I can say right now.”

Michel Harris led both teams in tackles (6) while Andrew led everyone in tackles for loss (2).

“It’s really just what the family wants,” Michael Harris said after the game. “I feel like we’re still leaning to UCF more, but really it’s family stuff.”

Harris confirmed that their decision is down to Maryland and UCF after previously announcing that Arkansas was in contention.

Bishop Gorman’s Zachariah Branch, the USC commit and the top wide receiver in the country, scored the only other touchdown for team Phantom, returning a punt 93 yards. He was named MVP after netting 152 all-purpose yards.

Michael Matthews would score the only touchdown for Team Speed, catching a 23-yard pass late in the second quarter.

A number of players announced their signing intentions during the game as well, though one that did not is Lakeland cornerback Cormani McClain. The Miami verbal commit said he will make a full commitment on Jan. 15, though did not name any other schools in the running.
