Take down recurve bows offer the hunter and archer an easy compact way of storing their bow. The upper and lower limb will detach from the riser as shown in the following visual reference. The advantages are not only limited to portability but maintenance as well. If a limb forms a crack in a full size recurve bow then most likely the whole bow is best used for firewood. A take down though if a limb forms a crack you simply replace the faulty limb. So you can enjoy your bow your entire life without replacing the whole setup, simply swap out the old limb for a new one and you back to shooting.

Bear Archery recently came out with a new traditonal bow called the Bear Takedown Supreme. The 60 inch hunter is made up of exotic hardwoods such as exotic Rosewood and Zebra-wood riser sections along with Zebra-wood limbs backed in clear fiberglass have been used to craft these stunning bows that are both superior in the field and certain to be tomorrow’s collectible. The inlaid compass is a signature feature of all of the top of the line products they offer and is especially useful for recurve bow hunting.

The detachable limbs are securely mounted on the riser ends with bolts and rubber spacers for cushion. With proper maintenance these bows will last a lifetime. I like to store my bows in a bow case to keep it like new. They offer bow cases at any sporting retail outlet or you can order them online. I like a sturdy bow case to tote around my equipment to protect it from damage and the elements.

Traditional Archery dates back since when we first were created by God. Indians on the prairies relied on the stick bow to provide their families with sustenance from the land. They were mindful to use every part of the animal and revered the animals like no other generation has. It is from this we must learn of how to respect the tools we use and the game we hunt. To respect it, to use it with care and keep our conscious ever mindful of that tradition and how valuable it is to us as archers and hunters. I came across a video dedicated to the traditional archer and I can’t say how much it cleansed my soul and made me realize how important our traditions are to us. I look at all the technology in the world and see the hunting numbers decreasing every year. I hope we can keep this tradition alive by teaching kids how to shoot with a traditional bow.

Check out one of my latest articles called Archery Popularity were we take a look how archery overall is increasing but hunting numbers are decreasing. So with that I leave you, intill next week I wish you the best and hope you get your first robinhood!

Since 3D archery shoots came into being within the last few decades the archery popularity has been on the rise. 3D shoots offer hunters and non-hunters alike a pleasurable setting to make into a family outing. This not only introduces the younger generation into archery tournaments but often the course is laid out in the midst of nature itself. It gives a chance for the younger generation to be exposed to great outdoors and is a stepping stone for sportsman like conduct and great foundation to teach children about different species of animals.

The target on a 3D course usually consists of animal targets with the bull’s eye located in the proper kill range of the target. This helps young archery hunters determine and visualize what the best shot placement is on certain species of animals. The targets can range from raccoon, to elk, to whitetail deer and every species in between.

Archery was once taught in our schools but with ever tightening budgets it is often the first to get cut. But with the archery popularity increasing we are seeing more schools starting up Archery Clubs as an after school activity. This not only stimulates the local and regional economy but makes for a great setting to keep kids off the streets.

Some of this increase in popularity is due to archers like Fred Bear and Chuck Adams. They have taken a personal initiative to put the fun back into the sport. They are both recognized as leading contributors to the advances in bowhunting within the past decades. Although Fred Bear has passed on recently his youth bows are really what Bear Archery is all about and that is introducing kids into our tradition.

The greatest promotion of our sport is introducing a young child into archery. Whether it be compound bow or recurve bow there is nothing better than seeing a twinkle in their eye when you say let’s go fling some arrows. So if you ever get a chance maybe instead of buying your young nephew or niece a new video game try buying them a youth bow and arrow set. I can guarantee the values and self esteem they gain from being a successful archer will supersede sitting in front of a TV for hours on end.

We can be apart of the rise in archery popularity if we take a small personal initiative to introduce a few kids into the tradition each year. We can only promote and hope for the best. But it is with this caring and promotion comes the makes of legendary bowhunters like Fred Bear and Chuck Adams these archers can inspire us daily. Check back on future articles I want to talk about popular women archers that substantially helped mainstream archery and promoted archery just as much as there counterparts.

Recurve Bow Maintenance

Proper recurve bow maintenance will simply help keep your arrow slinger around for next year’s hunt or archery tournament. Before every article I write I often lookup online to see what other hunters and archers have covered and what they have not covered. A few things I don’t hear much on are bow storage, nock care and concise string care.

The latter topic which is bow string care you hear a lot of. Most will tell you how to properly keep your string waxed to avoid excessive wear of the strands. Although that is excellent practice which I do regularly there is more to it than just that. Each bow string is not created equal if you take a Fast Flight bow string for example not every type of wax is intended for them. It is necessary to get a bow wax that does not have silicon in it or otherwise you risk the chance of the string coming part were the loops are tied off. The right bow wax for the type of string you purchased is necessary and worth researching.

Fast Flight bow strings should also not be used on a non-Fast Flight bow. If the bow manufacture does not state your recurve bow will handle Fast Flight strings then I highly recommend you go with a Dyneema or a factory bow string. The Dyneema string is more forgiving and allows more stretching to occur at full draw. I will go into more about this in a future article because each bow string type and its advantages and disadvantages is beyond the scope of this article.

Although many archers and I wish to shoot our recurve bow all year round like Frank Addington Jr. Simply put for most archers their bow is only taken out of storage a few months each year. So that means an unstrung bow sitting in the corner collecting dust. First I would like to note if your bow is sitting their collecting dust then unstring it for the year and tightly wrap you string away so the serving does not fray and come part.

I invested in a bow sleeves for my older bows that sit longer. Although I get more practice in than the regular archer I use the sleeve to save on space. If you are going to store your bow most of the year I would suggest keeping it out of the basement. Excessive exposure to mildew and moisture can play havoc on any bow. Keep it in a fairly warm dry spot of the house. I have mine hanging over my headboard bed but maybe that is why my ex-girlfriend is now an ex! Some women don’t understand us die hards!

Picking A Suitable Recurve Bow

I purchased a Bear SuperMag 48 inch recurve bow two years ago. The bow has fiberglass limb tip reinforcements that specifically designed for FastFlight strings. At a price range of around $350.00 it is not a cheaply made bow. I was surprised when reading a few bow reviews archers were giving it low rating. It seems most bow hunter’s had problems ranging from limb warping to shattered limbs. At first look many would think it is a problem bow but I think there is more at hand than here. I have been shooting Bear bow’s since my teens and have not once been disappointed with any of my purchases. The bow builders at Bear Archery have reached a craftsmanship level that many companies find it hard to compete with. That leads me to the whole purpose of this article. To discuss why the SuperMag is receiving such a low rating and how bow hunters can learn about bow design before purchasing.

My first impression after purchasing SuperMag through an online retailer was that of being surprised in how short the arrow slinger actually is. This makes this bow an excellent choice if you hunt in thick under growth. It is a very maneuverable which means it does not need a lot of elbow room to get off a quick shot. If I would have taken my older model bow through the same thick underbrush I would end up fully entangled in the thick of it. Shorter bows offer not only more maneuverability but you tend to not snag on every hanging branch.

One of the disadvantages a short recurve has over a long recurve is a short recurve is draw length limited. The shorter the bow the shorter one’s draw length must be. Meaning an archer with a long draw length will put more stress on a recurve bow that is 48 inches in length than they would a bow that is 58 inches in length. The stress is put on the limbs and tips of the bow. Although since the inception of compound bows the manufactures have fixed this problem by only allowing some bows with set max draw lengths. That is not to say a shorter compound bow have shorter max draw lengths but that they make specific bows for the longer draw length archer. If you order a compound bow online you will soon find out that not all bows are created equal. Some compound bows will have max draw lengths that vary in which you must take into consideration before making the purchase.

The bottom line is to test out the recurve bow before you buy it. Most bow dealers can recognize when you are pushing a bow to its max and they can recommend another bow for your size draw length. So the question comes to mind is the Bear SuperMag 48 suitable for an archer with a long draw length? Based on reading the detailed reviews I believe the bad reputation is coming from archers with a longer draw length.

If you own a Bear Archery SuperMag 48 please feel free to drop a line. I would enjoy your input.

Recurve Bow Hunting

This site is dedicated to helping hunters’ and archers’ alike recognizing the benefits of not only shooting recurve bow but hunting with a traditional bow.

My first thought when building this blog was I will cover what the different areas on a recurve bow, different bow strings available on the market and instinctive shooting. I soon found out that just covering these few topics was not sufficient enough to give the overall topic justice. Not only sufficient but today’s archers are more vested in these traditions requiring more in depth information on the subject at hand.

The act of shooting a traditional bow is called traditional archery. Some hunters believe a true traditionalist can only be defined as one that uses no mechanical devices what so ever. Meaning they shoot with their bare fingers, their arrows are made of wood, their quiver is not mounted on the bow, and no mounted sight. Although with these strict guidelines we soon find archers are more accepting of the newer technologies such as a shooting tab, carbon arrows and screw mounted quivers. Although being a traditionalist means for some just using a recurve bow or long bow and the bow attachments are negligent in defining who they are as an archer. I believe the latter will not only help traditional archery but it will attract more archers necessarily not wanting the stringent guidelines some archers set. I do not discount those strict guidelines that some have set but I recognize the value in how traditional archery will evolve with the needs of today’s archer.

This generation of archers have seen the single most largest spurt of growth in the popularity of archery since its inception. This largest single spurt of growth was due to the persistence of archers to name a few like Fred Bear, Chuck Adams and Howard Hill all master at shooting a recurve bow. Their fruits of there labor spawned 3d archery tournaments which mainstreamed archery. It bridge the gape between hunters and non-hunters alike shooting bow and arrow alongside one another. Archers form close relationships with regular shooting partners they see on the course. Comradeship forms that would have never been seen without the hard work and persistence archery grandparents that envisioned a better future for archery.
