Lovely lamp made with an old tea box, unusual with a touch of vintage, but an industrial shade makes it incredible! I used a tea box for this original lamp, made of metal, repainted in part the same color as its shade. It has a cord with a switch, a socket, a bulb, and a wall plug. Place it anywhere in the house; it will fit any style and find its place in any room.

I thoroughly enjoy the creative process of gathering materials on my walk down to the river Danube. I only use naturally occurring seasonal items: plants, flowers, seeds, acorns, pinecones, shells, pebbles, leaves, etc. I pick up everything available in the immediate environment, where I create my pieces and always try to make something new, something unique.

This is a meditative, relaxing hobby in a beautiful environment, and it gives me the joy to spend time there.

It is a very creative way to repurpose pearls from broken pieces of jewelry (along with any other beads, buttons, or shiny objects). And you end up with a beautiful art piece for your home or retail store.

The design team at Mannequin Madness collaborated on tricks and tips to make the process of making this as easy as possible. When we posted a similar one on Facebook it got TONS of likes so we knew that this struck a nerve with crafters. But that one was so intricate it was not very easy for a beginning crafter. And it required a lot more materials than most people have on hand.

So, we came up with our “hack” version which takes less time, has fewer materials, and can be done in a relatively short period of time. We like to offer projects at Mannequin Madness that can be made by people of all crafting levels.

Here are the supplies and steps needed.

SUPPLIES

• A female mannequin torso. The torso can bemade of cloth, fiberglass or plastic. But we recommend a torso that is three dimensional, not the torsos the are just a shell with a hollow back, l like this STYLE. (NOTE you can save money and buy a USED versus NEW torso. We have a selection HERE.
• A small t shirt that is stretchy because it is made out of jersey, not cotton. Otherwise the shirt will not fit tight on the torso which is what you MUST have. You can also use a swimsuit, corset, tube top or bra. The reason for using a t-shirt or other fabric is it makes it much easier for the glue to adhere to the form. And if by chance you don’t like your finished product, you can remove the garment and start over.
• A HIGH-heat glue gun (Be sure it’s high-heat, a low heat glue gun dries too fast) and plenty of glue sticks
• Painter’s or masking tape to mark off the beading areas for your design.
• Pearls, beads, buttons, jewelry, etc.– If you don’t have enough broken or discarded pieces of your own jewelry you can supplement by buying jewelry at a thrift store. Or buy a string of beads at a craft store. This is also a good way to repurpose Mardi Gras beads. Remember, the larger the beads, the less glueing you have to do!
• We also used rhinestone covered ribbon called “faux jewel diamond wrap” which looks like this:

STEPS

1. Pull the stretchy t-shirt (or other garment) over the torso and make sure it is a tight fit. You can use pins, iron-on tape or hand sew it to ensure it is a tight fit. If the shirt has sleeves, cut them off at the armpit and reserve them for making a choker which we will describe below.
2. Take the painter’s tape and mark of the areas that you want to bead. The painter’s tape will hep you maintain a symmetrical look if that is desired. Using the glue gun begin beading one marked-off area with loose or strung beads. You’ll get different effects for each. Add buttons and other adornments to get the look you want.
3. Move onto another marked off area until the torso is as covered as you wish. It might be easier to put the torso on its back as you work.
4. You might find that you will change your mind about your design as you work. When we first started the plan was to use only pearls and rhinestone-covered ribbon. But since we didn’t have enough pearls, we used our leftover pink beads from Mardi Gras.
5. You can create a choker necklace with the leftover material of sleeves from the t-shirt. Just put the fabric over the neck of the torso and make it fit snug and then embellish.
6. When the front is as complete as you want it to be, cover the arm holes on each side with a beads.Beading the back of the form is optional. Since ours was going to be displayed against a wall, we didn’t bead it.

As a finishing touch, we glued a crown to the neck cap. You could also glue more beads, silk flowers, or a drapery finial. And we put the form on a tabletop height stand and made a skirt for it out of tulle and deco mesh. A petticoat would achieve a similar effect. The form was just too pretty to have a bare metal stand protruding underneath.

For a more dramatic effect for the skirt, do what we did for the Mardi Gras-themed beaded torso below.

We put the torso on a tall stand and made a skirt using chicken wire (you can also use a tomato cage) and decorated it with deco mesh and Mardi Gras garland. You can also do this idea for Xmas and use deco mesh and pine garland and attach your holiday ornaments.

After moving into a house on a steep ridge, we decided to put handrails down to our backyard. We wanted something different and artsy. With the help of a local bike co-op, we found an artist who fits the bill.

When we contracted with a local artist, Ezequiel Leoni, we had two desires for our handrails. First, we wanted materials to be used to be salvaged and repurposed. Secondly, since my husband is a cyclist, the materials needed to be bicycle parts.

A handrail going down the 15 steps to the pool was a necessity! The other area that needed a rail was around a brick pedestal where a bbq grill had been.

Eze collected and used a variety of bike pieces. Around the brick pedestal, Eze created a wrap-around “sculpture” with a handrail going down to the area where our dog could relieve herself. The artist welded the pieces together and did a turquoise patina finish, making the different parts uniform in color. The two exciting railings are fun to look at and identify what each bike piece is. Now we have functional art that is creative and truly one of a kind!

Tortoises live a long life, and this sculpture took almost 9 months to complete. First, I make a paste using cardboard paper and glue. Then, I sculpt in layers, waiting for it to dry, to continue.

The most critical part is that the pulp brings back the wood´s DNA to the sculpture, making it look and feel like wood. Tortoises are patient and peaceful animals.

This sculpture is h 20cm x w 23cm x l 32cm. I left the sculpture in its natural cardboard color.

From Ragz To Blanketz is an art and craft project/problem-solving tool developed by the environmental artist Dennis N. Easter to transform old clothing into blankets to prevent the resources from ending up in the landfill. The dress used was either too worn to wear or too damaged to donate. To date, 9/5/21, the artist has created ten blankets.

I embellished saved clothing with beautiful patterns, colors, designs, and textures, which is why I did not want to discard them. I used garments made of Khaki, cotton, silk, polyester, and wool. I also used sheets and clothing that my girlfriend had thrown in the trash. The hardest part was to put all the colors together so they would not clash. I cut all the dresses into squares before being sewn together. The average blanket took one month to complete.

I feel privileged to use some of his tools during my work, and I feel his spirit and sense of fun come through in the work that I create.

At Upcycle with Jing, we want you to both looks and feel good when wearing our jewelry. Therefore, all of our jewelry pieces have been handcrafted from PET plastic bottles we found in Helsinki.

Our inspiration is what we set out to save – nature. Everything in our collection is a tribute to an embodiment of the beauty of flowers. Flowers are delicate and gorgeous – and so is our jewelry. Every brooch, hairpiece, necklace, and pair of earrings is handcrafted to finessed perfection.

I first collect PET plastic bottles from the streets or event venues of Helsinki. Bottles are then washed, sanitized, and prepped for my jeweler’s studio, where I, Jing, personally work on your order.

I cut the plastic into shapes inspired by flowers, nature, and art forms. Then, using candle heat, I very carefully curl the plastic into the beautiful organic shapes you see featured in my product portfolios. I then adorn your jewelry with beads, leaves, and other fashion accessories. A final assembly ensures perfectly durable and functional wear. Every step of my creative process is a very conscious one, designed to minimize plastic waste.

The presence of plastic is useful for human life, and it causes a lot of plastic waste to continue to grows every year. Most plastic waste is untreated, besides accumulating in landfills, mostly pollutes the oceans. As one of the largest maritime countries in the world, Indonesia contributed to the plastic waste in the ocean after China.

Waste plastic bottles are one of the most polluting trash on the beach. In addition to being one type of plastic waste with a large quantity, the selection of plastic bottle waste to be recycled due to its strong material quality, stable dimensions, and chemical and heat resistance.

The waste treatment technique I have used is hot textile. Hot textile is a technique in which synthetic or natural materials are combined to form new sheets using heat conductors such as heat guns and irons. For example, the use of heating techniques in plastic bottles is done because it can drastically reduce the volume of plastic bottles to increase the quantity of recycled plastic bottle waste and, at the same time, create visuals of new processed waste products.

Innovations born from the exploration results will be further processed into modular or sheet results for fashion accessories. It is hoped that this research can inspire the community to be more active and innovative independently in utilizing plastic bottle waste.

A couple of old blinds and a tin plate is all it takes to make this fun pendant lampshade. Aluminum is a nice material to use in DIY projects because it bends and cuts so easily. This pendant is lightweight and very easy to make. Plus, you get to reuse a very ugly blind that’s lying around your house.

The arch shape is a big decorative trend right now. This shelf will be the perfect spot to display your favorite decorative item or collectible.

I started the idea by spreading a thin layer of glue inside the paper shredder because it would hold all of the strips together. After selecting what strips of paper to use, I then cover all the glue with strips of paper and pressing them firmly together, making sure that there were no spaces. Then I placed a thin sheet of plastic on top of it all, then placing small bricks on top of the plastic to compress the paper even more. After 3 weeks, when the glue was dry, I had a picture made with shredded paper that could be framed and hung on my wall.

Today I am carrying on with the upcycled watch parts theme with some fun pendant necklaces. For this project, I will be using the empty watch cases from last week’s project. It is a fun project because you can use your imagination to develop unique ideas to fill the empty watch casings.

I used some paint, puffed rice, the winding pin from the watches, watch faces, and other small trinkets to decorate the pendants that I made. The first step is to remove the watch’s back and take out the watch’s face and watch mechanism. This leaves you with the back piece and the crystal front piece.

All you need to do then is assemble your mixed media design inside, close the watch back up and add some chain. You can use paper, clay, small metal object. For this pendant, I shaped the hearts from a small jump ring.

A Bialetti Moka stovetop coffee maker was found within some old personal items, lying around abandoned for years. It was apparent it had many, many years of use and showing signs of deterioration. Without disposing of it, we decided to recycle the maximum from it. After a good cleaning and sanitizing of the entire unit, we separated and cut it into different parts.

Although we cleaned each piece, the marking, stubborn stains, and dull finish remain to provide the beauty of the age and use from past usage. After the Moka stovetop coffee maker was cut up somewhat randomly, we analyzed each piece for its function. We then assembled the pieces into a unique jewelry element.

With old or broken umbrellas, I recreate a new dress: Skirt + Umbrella = Skirtella style! Would you like to dress with an umbrella? Yes, we can.

The Skirtella’s style is very fashionable in clothing too, and it sold and had expositions in many markets and shops in London and Spain. It’s made with fabric’s umbrella, which recalls that of the past decades because every umbrella is original and painted with many pictures and colors.

This bag has been handcrafted by recycling the inner tube of a tractor. It has:

• inner lining
• 1 internal pocket with zipping
• 1 elastic cord with carabiner for keys
• 1 inner colored pocket

The shoulder strap is adjustable; the closure is magnetic. Dimensions are approximately 40 x 33 (long side) cm. The inner tube is a practically indestructible and waterproof material that will carefully protect your objects.

In today’s post, I have a new technique to share. This technique allows the watch hands to remain on the watch’s face (in the previous version, only the watch plate was used).

Anyway, in this version, the earrings have a little more weight to them as the watch mechanism is left on as well. You can decide which version you like better, but I think they are cuter with the watch hands intact. As I said, the process is straightforward. You need to start with two watches with similar faces or make a pair that you like.

This pouch has been handcrafted by recycling the inner tube of a truck tire. Also, we used a breathable and durable black fabric that adheres to the body. The shoulder strap is adjustable, nylon polyester, the closure is plastic. The pouch has two zippered pockets, one of which adheres with the body and therefore extremely secure against theft. The inner tube is a practically indestructible and waterproof material that will protect your objects with care.

This messenger bag is a unique piece, handcrafted by recycling the truck’s inner tube and a bicycle tire. The bag is lined with grey neoprene fabric and has 8 pockets, including 3 large zippered pockets (opening 30 cm), 1 small pen pocket, 3 smartphone pockets, and the bag’s main pocket.

The bag also has an internal keychain carabiner. The shoulder strap is adjustable in polyester. The bag is closed by the two metal buckles, super secure; it opens by pushing up both flaps of each buckle. The dimensions are about 35 x 26 x 6 cm and weigh 925 grams.

Each of our creations results from a search for aesthetics and functionality: we recycle with the desire to create something that is still usable over time, reflecting your aesthetic taste.

I reuse plastic bottles from domestic products in general and tie the pieces together using a fishing line. As I said before, I don’t usually do a project beforehand; the container shapes suggest to me what can be made out of them and the possibilities to be explored. The result is exclusive colorful toys.

Repurposing is my passion, really. I love taking the old into a new life that can be beautiful again. From a tiny mouse to a life-size baby manatee, I have produced over 100 different animals. 

The mill system has been completely dismantled, and a system of led lights has been inserted. The drawer has been restored and all painted by hand (acrylic paint). The fittings are old clock gears. This lamp gives a wonderful atmosphere; the drawer serves as a secret box or jewelry box.

Upcycling is a major trending category for home décor product searches. Repurposed products are promoted on many DIY sites, and they can be found in retail stores, catalogs, and online sites such as Pinterest, Houzz, Instagram, Etsy, to name a few displaying countless articles and images. There is no limit to re-envisioning products and bring them to market, especially as online retail becomes more dominant as a means of marketing and sales. As a fellow maker, I frequently browse online sites for clever uses of re-made products. These are mostly home-based businesses that launch exciting new repurposed concepts. Many followers are copying these design trends as many repurposed products start out DIY. There is nothing new under the sun; however, some of these makers are on the vanguard of upcycling, repurposing, or re-use found online.  They are truly original creations with a high quality of craftsmanship that meet commercial, retail production standards. They are not just one-offs or knock-offs.  It is fun to see what is out there.

Railroadware, for example, has been turning industrial relics and discarded early telecommunications industry glass & steel into a full-time business since 2006 lighting fixtures, hardware, and gifts that are sold in in a few stores, national catalogs, and mostly online. We maintain a commercial standard meeting NEC standards, and UL listing is available on all light fixtures.

Glass insulators, traffic light lenses, runway globes, telegraph pole cross arm beams are a few of the raw materials Railroadware uses to make light fixtures, hardware, and gifts. They are industrial artifacts that are given a new life and a new home. 

These everyday industrial objects are turned into pendant light fixtures, chandeliers, candle holders, cabinet pulls, kitchen hooks, door handles, pot and pan hangers…

Once ubiquitous and plentiful glass insulators on telegraph & telephone poles and power towers connected a vast network of steel and copper wires across our lands and connecting us to the world are now a relic of the past replaced by ceramics and high-density plastics, satellites & digital communications.

In the 1840s, both glass and porcelain insulators were  used since the early days of the telegraph, but glass insulators were generally less expensive than porcelain, and were normally used for lower-voltage applications. Glass insulators were discontinued in the early 70’s. And now found in antique stores, insulator conventions, online, and lucky old barns or old or abandoned railroad lines. There is an adventure in collecting these artifacts and a skill in turning them into commercial lighting fixtures and hardware.

Tim recalls in Glenbrook, Nevada using insulators for target practice on the ground or on abandoned telephone poles. It wasn’t until he came across a common Hemingray insulator in an antique store in Oroville, CA, that the inspiration struck. He bought his first insulator for a few bucks, “I wanted to turn an insulator into a cool light fixture.” Hoping he could drill through the glass, it took a lot of testing, drilling, broken glass to make the first Insulator Light. He never thought someday they would be very popular as beautiful light fixtures hanging over kitchen islands or in restaurants, bars, and commercial spaces around the country and even overseas. While hunting for more insulators along with Butte County and other rail lines in Northern California and Oregon, he came across other railroad discards, and the product line grew. “When standing at a railroad crossing and looking both ways, many of Railroadware collectible products are part of that industrial landscape like insulators, cross-arm beams, railroad spikes, anchors & traffic light lenses.”

These days materials are mostly regionally sourced from friends & collectors at insulator and bottle shows across the country. 100-year-old glass insulators are sorted, cleaned, dipped in an acid bath, steel wooled, and prepped for drilling. The typical light includes a core drill to fit the porcelain socket, a hole for the cord, and three holes for the LED bulb’s venting. The hardware metal pieces are rusted on our “Rust Farm” until they acquire the right patina. Then they are assembled and packaged for shipping to customers.

Railroadware just celebrated their 15-year anniversary milestone of being in business. The founder, an architect, and inventor says; standing next to a grinder with a cut railroad spike in his hand wearing a leather apron, goggles, and torn-up leather gloves, “I’ve been working on the railroad all the livelong day turning rusty steel and soot coated glass into gold. I restore, assemble, reform, and craft beautiful products without having to fabricate or manufacture. These products capture the imagination of the railroad and a western-oriented audience looking for lighting & decorative products that have a connection to the past.” The wire wheel grinds years of rust and grit off the Railroad spike to become a drawer pull or wall hook. “I give these old industrial artifacts a new life. What was a piece of glass 30 feet in the air on a telegraph or telephone pole is transformed into a beautiful bar or kitchen LED light fixture called an Insulator Light.”

Railroadware, machines, and handcrafts these products in a ranch shop South of Chico, California. Most of our products are waste stream sourced materials, regionally located from collections or saved discarded materials from a landfill. The artifacts are then sorted, cleaned, and restored. The glass and steel artifacts are generally drilled, welded, cut & grinded with simple home shop tools. Some additional labor and products are outsourced or purchased as accessories. Our hardware products are rustic finished, not power coated or enameled. They use raw materials (industrial artifacts), and they spend time in the rust field for more exposure to the elements before final oiling, polishing, sealing, and shipping worldwide.

The American Remade Collection strikes a resonant chord with architects, interior designers, and business & homeowners. There is a connection to the early telegraph, telephone, telecommunications, railroad, and power industries. As emerging technologies and rapid modernization transformations our world, leaving industrial artifacts behind as discards. In some cases, these discards have become very valuable or full of potential as they can no longer be manufactured. Some companies have even made replicas that don’t have a soul or real connection to the past. We work with the real thing and celebrate the history. This requires us to rely on a supply network that is hard to replicate. Railroadware stays on track, mining the past to turn these historical objects into useful products remade again.

The Railroadware name and logo evolved after several visits to railroad crossings to collect insulators. I would park at railroad crossings and walk the rails with my camera and backpack to collect more insulators. There was much more to find when you look both ways.

I glean the history of an object from how it has been formed, folded, scratched, colored, stretched, cut, and more. Then I recover and enhance the hidden dynamics of, in this case, used leather jackets. Through my improvisational process, visual evidence on the surface becomes more pronounced or is acknowledged or eliminated. I use leather friendly and durable acrylic paints.

My challenge is to experience and respond closely to the characteristic qualities of a found item.

This cute rainbow phone holder is very easy to make and only requires a few supplies: cardboard, plaster, and a little paint. I explain everything in detail in my article and with a video (link below). You can also download and print the free rainbow template and start making your phone stand.

Afterward, I let it soak in the bottle for a few hours and then rinse the chain in hot water and dry with a clean cloth. If the chain is still dirty, use an old toothbrush or a small brush to get in between the links. Once the chain is clean and dry, let your creativity run wild!

Here are some items I’ve made from reclaimed bicycle chain.

I took a mixed media approach to decorate all of the containers. I used some acrylic pour paint drippings, fabric from a discarded umbrella, a postcard, Swarovski crystals, jewelry findings, and actual small acrylic paintings on canvas I had painted earlier this year. I also added necklace chains to the inside of the lids of the Altoid tins. I DO NOT recommend doing this. While the chains made nice borders, they affected the closing of the lids.

I adhered the canvas of one of my paintings to the lid and added furniture embellishments with Swarovski crystals for the salvaged cigar box. On the inside of the lid, I glued a wooden owl cut out. I then added a piece of foam covered by the umbrella fabric to the bottom. I also attached some gold filigree embellishments and crystals to the sides of this box.

Many steps were taken to get these usual containers to be artsy, but the process was worth it!

The doll on the left: “Senorita” the doll is made from a small wooden spool, her head is made of wood, her arms are a pipe cleaner covered with ribbon, the spool is covered with satin ribbon. Her dress is made of lace, with a knot at the neck. There is a straw hat with a flower on her head. Her facial features and hair are applied with a permanent marker. She is 2 3/4″ tall.

Doll in the middle: “Spring bride” the doll is made of a small wooden spool, her head is made of wood, her arms are covered with ribbon, the spool is covered with satin ribbon. Her wedding dress is made of lace, with fake pearls around the neck; she wears a bouquet with a wide satin ribbon with lace. Her veil on her head is net with fake pearl trim. Her facial features and hair are applied with a permanent marker. She is 2 3/4″ tall.

The doll on the right: “Daisy” the doll is made of a small wooden spool, her head is made of wood, her arms are covered with satin ribbon. Her dress is made of lace with a satin bow at the neck. There is a large lace flower on her head like a hat, with a rhinestone on it. Her facial features and hair are applied with a permanent marker. She is 2 3/4″ tall.

These recycled ornaments are super simple to make and very affordable. Besides some toilet rolls, you only need acrylic paint, a pair of scissors, and twine…items you probably already have at home. You can paint the cardboard any color you like to match your Christmas decorations.

Don’t hesitate to get kids involved; they will surely like to get involved with the Christmas tree decoration making a few easy star ornaments. Have fun crafting for Christmas!

Step By Step Instructions:

• We used the wood pallet for our vertical garden; we removed the 2 narrow boards with a pound hammer and crowbar.
• Knock out the nails with a claw hammer, then remove them.
• Cut out half of the central board with a jigsaw. Use a speed square to keep the cut straight.
• Straighten one edge of each board using the jointer sled, and table saw.
• We cut the narrow boards into thin strips in our design and cut the central board into a wide ribbon. If you need more wood, dismantle the central panel from another pallet and use that.
• Cut the boards down to the appropriate size using a fence and stop block on the miter saw.
• Place the pallet on your workbench and fix the strips in place with waterproof wood glue and brad nails.
• Time to don a dust mask and face shield, then go to town on your vertical garden with the angle grinder to remove any dirt/marks and smooth out the wood to a more pleasing finish.
• Flip the vertical garden on its back and position the hooks appropriately (avoiding the nails in the pallet blocks).
• Drill pilot holes, then drive the screws home with an impact driver.
• Carry the vertical garden out to your wall, then lift it into place. The hooks will sit beautifully over the wall, holding your newly fashioned pallet wood vertical garden securely in place.

Step-by-step instructions:

1. Mark the can into four equal parts.
2. Draw a line about 5/8s of an inch up from the bottom of the can.
3. Cut the top off.
4. Insert a blade of the pocket knife about 1/2 inch from the top.
5. Making a slot for the scissors to be inserted, insert the scissors, and cut around the top.
6. Draw the four flower petals on the can. Be sure the petals fill the quarter panels of the can.
7. Cut the petals with the scissors, probably staying inside the lines.
8. After both cans have been cut, bend over the petals to the 5/8s line.
9. Put one can on top of the other, be sure to offset the petals so it looks like a complete flower.
10. Press the cans together. Note: You may need to cut a slit between two of the petals on the bottom can to fit easier.
11. Paint your taste.

The black clock was made from a piece of scrap metal. After I removed the rust from the metal, I used a primer and paint spray paint on both sides. Then I glued filigree jewelry findings on the clock face and attached the clock mechanism & the hands.

The brass clock was fun and easy to assemble. I received two brass disks from a close friend. They were originally from candle holders. They needed polishing but once that was done, I was impressed with the pretty etching on both brass pieces. I used one of the disks to be the clock. After I attached the clock mechanism and added the clock hands, this clock turned out great!
