According to the Environmental Protection Agency, over 2 million tons of unwanted electronic waste is added to U.S. landfills every year. Fortunately, many individuals and organizations are working toward mitigating this problem by donating electronics instead of throwing them out. There are several ways you can donate unwanted electronics so that they can be reused or recycled properly.

As long as the electronic item still works, programs like Recycle San Diego’s Armed Forces YMCA Donation Program is a good idea. If you’d like to make a few bucks on your used electronics, try selling them on San Diego’s Craigslist or through a similar medium. In many cases, older electronics do not sell for much and it will save you time and effort to simply drop them off at an ewaste recycling company such as Recycle San Diego.

If you have electronic devices that no longer work, it is still important to ensure that they do not end up in the landfill. Make use of a local eWaste program where such items as laptops, computers, monitors, and televisions can be dropped off. If the location of the eWaste drop-off is far from where you live, find out if the facility will be holding an eWaste event in your area.

Recycle San Diego offers a donation program that includes drop-off events everyday from 9am-4pm at 8222 Ronson Rd, San Diego, CA 9211. Many of the electronics dropped off at this weekly event are refurbished and donated to those in need.

People are replacing “outdated” electronic items more rapidly than ever. The average cell phone is replaced every two years, computers tend to be replaced every three years, and new devices such as iPods are replaced even quicker. Without the possibility for donating or recycling these items, our world would be in dire straits. Become part of the solution by donating or recycling your time-worn electronics.

If junk in your home is creating clutter and making it difficult to stay organized, you may have decided to finally perform a considerable spring cleaning. Now that you’ve set aside the things that you want to keep from that which you need to get rid of, what do you do with all of this surplus “stuff?” Fortunately, you don’t have to add to the landfill problem that is already causing massive environmental destruction. Instead, take the time and effort to divide items that can be donated and those that must be recycled or disposed of properly.

The types of items that you can donate will depend on the organization you are donating to. Of course, items in good working order can be donated to your local thrift store, Salvation Army, or other charitable organizations. If you make a significant contribution, you may even be able to write it off on your federal taxes.

Items that are commonly accepted for donation by government or charitable organizations include clothing and shoes, household items, school supplies, and toys. High-priced clothing like coats and jackets are excellent items to donate. Most charities will ask that clothing and shoes are clean and in decent condition. In other words, if clothing is considerably worn or torn, it would be better to dispose of them or use them as rags. For sanitary reasons, socks and underwear are not accepted. The same general rule applies for household items, school supplies, and toys. All should be in fairly good condition.

If you have large items to donate, such as furniture or appliances, you may find that there are local organizations that will pick up these items curbside. Taking the time to find out how to donate instead of throw away is a great way to participate in the green movement while providing usable items for those in need.

Try using Recycle San Diego’s search tool to find a place near you. You can start by looking at the different categories of recycling and donation.

To maintain the health and safety of the environment, it is imperative to recycle electronics properly. This is especially true these days as countless electronic devices are used and replaced more rapidly than ever before. Unwanted electronics that end up in landfills release highly toxic metals and materials such as mercury, lead, PVC, chromium, brominated flame retardants, and more. These materials eventually leach out into land and water causing extensive environmental damage. The good news is that you can do something about this by disposing electronics appropriately.

Recycle San Diego offers eWaste drop-off services, which allow you to drop off most electronic devices at no charge. Accepted electronic devices include televisions, monitors, computers, stereo systems, laptops, cell phones, LCD screens, copiers, printers, computer towers, scanners, CRT screens, faxes, DVD players, VCRs, speakers, and more. If you are concerned about personal or business data that is still on your computer, laptop, or other electronic devices, Recycle San Diego offers data destruction services.

Businesses often accumulate large amounts of unwanted electronic devices. If you have recently upgraded your computers or other electronic devices and would like a convenient way to recycle outdated electronics, it is possible to schedule an eWaste pick-up.

Another easy way to give your electronic devices a second life is to visit an eWaste recycling event in San Diego. While there are drop-off locations throughout San Diego, you may find an eWaste event in your neighborhood that provides a more convenient way to recycle unwanted electronic items.

Using one of these methods for recycling electronics instead of sending them to the landfill will play a significant part in preserving the health of the environment. As a growing number of people participate in electronic recycling, it will be possible to maintain clean air, water, and land for many generations to come.

When waste is disposed of improperly, toxic substances leach into the ground, contaminate water supplies, and can cause widespread health problems.

LEARN ABOUT THE CITY OF SAN DIEGO RECYCLING ORDINANCE

Non-toxic waste will also present major public health problems and environmental damage when not disposed of properly. Just think of past civilizations in which human populations were wiped out due to improper waste disposal. These days, it is possible to both protect public health and prevent environmental damage through proper waste disposal and recycling programs.

With the world population increasing faster than ever, it has become imperative to manage waste properly and to reuse or recycle items when possible. You will find a number of resources in your area that will help you to safely dispose of both toxic and non-toxic items.

When managing waste in your own home, try to keep waste items organized in separate containers. For instance, trash should be kept in one bin while recyclable items should be stored in another. Keep in mind that hazardous waste cannot be put out on your curb like regular trash and recycling. Doing so could earn you a fine. Since a single gallon of motor oil, for instance, will contaminate 1 million gallons of groundwater if disposed of incorrectly, it is easy to understand why fines are given out for improper hazardous waste disposal.

If you are unsure about an item, contact your local waste facility in San Diego or use Recycle San Diego’s search tool. They will be able to provide sound advice on how to properly dispose of waste. These days, even items such as electronic devices are illegal to throw out in your trash. Learn about proper waste disposal and recycling so that you can reduce your risk of fines and help in maintaining the health of people and our planet.

Electronics are often overlooked as non-recyclable. With all of the tiny components that make up electric devices, how can these items possibly be recycled? There are many organizations and companies that will take E-Waste and refurbish these items, or they will dissemble them and reuse the individual components. All components that cannot be reused will be disposed of according to environmental law to ensure that toxic materials do not leach into the soil, water, or air.

Before you consider recycling electronic items that have been collecting dust in your home, first determine if they are still in working order. Even if they are old, but still work, there is likely to be one or several local organizations that will accept these electronic items and offer them to low-income families.

E-waste can also be recycled through Recycle San Diego, which is located at 8222 Ronson Road. Recycle San Diego offers E-Waste recycling events throughout the city to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to get rid of unwanted electronics without risking damage to the environment. Whether or not your E-Waste items are working, Recycle San Diego will accept them for free. Fees apply to other items such as appliances, lamps, and batteries.

In general, E-waste items include just about anything that takes a battery or can be plugged in. A few examples include computers, laptops, monitors, scanners, televisions, faxes, computer towers, LCD screens, plasma screens, telephones, DVD players, VCRs, and more. You will be able to remove clutter and create a great amount of free space in your home by getting rid of these unwanted items using responsible methods.

Electronic devices are often overlooked as items that cannot be recycled. In truth, electronics can be reused, refurbished, or taken apart so that individual components can be reused or recycled appropriately. Electronics that are not disposed of properly end up in landfills. Dangerous materials leach from eWaste and end up in the land and water, and into our air when they are placed in trash incinerators.

Now that the dangers of improper eWaste disposal are well know, there are many state and local government organizations that are making it easier for California’s citizens to get rid of their electronic devices more responsibly. Items that are still in working condition can be donated, which will give these electronic devices a second life. If your eWaste is no longer in working order, recycling the items will ensure that harmful materials such as lead, mercury, PVC, chromium, brominated flame retardants, and cadmium are not leached into the environment.

eWaste Donation Programs

Free eWaste Drop Off

There are many ways to properly recycle eWaste in San Diego. You might consider donating electronics that still work to Recycle San Diego through their donation program. You will also find that there are many eWaste drop-off locations throughout the San Diego area. For added convenience, eWaste events are provided by Recycle San Diego and provide an easy way to drop off unwanted electronics at events that take place in your neighborhood.

In addition to preserving the health of the environment, it is imperative that you dispose of electronics according to eWaste disposal law. Professional recycling services will make certain that your electronic devices are handled in a way that meets eWaste disposal regulations and can provide a Certificate of Recycling upon request.

Of course, the best reason to donate or recycle your unwanted electronic items is because you want to do something good for the health of others and for our planet. With today’s recycling resources, it is easier than ever to make this positive contribution.

That said, electronic waste is a category that many people are unsure of how to recycle. However, it is important to know that dumping electronic equipment into the trash has been made an illegal offense. To avoid fines and to do the planet a favor, it will pay off to find local e-waste, electronic waste, facilities in your area.

RECYCLE YOUR E-WASTE NOW>

The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) estimates that each U.S. household now contains 24 electronic products. Cell phones, televisions, computers, laptops, MP3 players, and other electronic devices have become staples in just about any household in developed countries. While these devices have helped us to move forward in many ways, they are also causing a great deal of environmental damage when they fill up our landfills. Toxins from e-waste leaches into our water systems, into the soil, and into the very air we breathe.

Now and again, you will have to make the decision about what to do with outdated or broken electronic devices. By acting responsibly and recycling e-waste instead of throwing it out, you will be complying with the law and will play an important role in the green movement. Once you’ve found an electronic waste recycling facility in San Diego, you will have a reliable place to bring your e-waste whenever necessary.

It’s a good idea to be sure that the e-waste facility you choose is committed to the environment and is local. Organizations such as Recycle San Diego helps individuals and organizations to identify their e-waste recycling needs and creates programs that maintain the highest standards when it comes to recycling responsibly and in a way that minimizes environmental damage. Recycle San Diego has developed programs companies large and small, commercial property managers, residential property managers, and individuals through e-waste recycling events each weekend.

Keep your unwanted ewaste out of your garage and out of our landfills! Take it to Steele Canyon Charter High School and dispose of it safely and for FREE. Proceeds will benefit the Class of 2013 Prom fund. Your time and effort will help us keep our environment clean!

Items accepted are: computers, monitors, tvs, printers, fax machines, scanners, dvd players, vhs players, stereos, battery backup devices, servers, inkjet cartridges, cell phones, and more!

Here are some facts about electronic waste:

In the United States alone, an estimated 300-400 million e-devices are discarded and less than 20% of that number is recycled.

Every month, around 50 million cell phones are replaced globally. Of these, only 10% are recycled.

Recycling a single television (an older version) will decrease 4-7 lbs of lead from leaching into the atmosphere, our groundwater, and our soil. Lead has been proven to cause damage to the kidneys, blood, and central and peripheral nervous systems.

Electronic waste accounts for 70% of the overall toxic waste sent to landfills.

In fact, electronic waste, including computers, is one of the most rapidly growing types of waste with over 4 million tons of e-waste ending up in U.S. landfills alone each year.

To make room in landfills, incineration techniques are often used. While this does indeed create more space for additional waste, it also speeds up the process of toxic metals such as lead, mercury, and cadmium leaching into the atmosphere. Computers that include PVC plastic will also release toxic furans and dioxins when incinerated.

The good news is that a growing number of concerned citizens and organizations are taking action by recycling computers or offering computer recycling services. Electronic recycling service centers often accept computers—working or not—for free. If you are concerned about personal information stored on your hard drive, there are electronic recycling centers that will destroy your old hard drive and ensure that all information is wiped clean.

If you own or manage a business that is performing a massive overhaul of its computer network and, in the process, will be replacing outdated computers with new ones, it may save you time and effort to have a professional computer recycling service pick up the computers for you. This will ensure that computers are recycled properly so that your business complies with environmental law.

Whether you are a business or an individual who would like to get rid of your old computers safely, you are likely to find the resources you need in your hometown or nearby. In many cases, electronic recycling services offer e-waste events in various locations so that everyone has the chance to recycle their computers and other electronic devices responsibly.

As the price of computers decrease and new editions are constantly being created that make older versions obsolete, there is a growing need for proper computer disposal. Not only does your business information need to be protected, but computers should be reused or recycled to avoid considerable environmental pollution when toxic substances are released from computers sent to landfills.

When you are faced with the problem of how to properly dispose of your company’s old computers, it is a good idea to find a local e-waste recycling center that can provide you with the most viable solutions. Computers can either be dropped off or, in many cases, picked up when an appointment is scheduled. Recycle San Diego is such a company.

Before you send your outdated computers off to a recycling facility, you’ll need to consider the sensitive information that is stored on your hard drive. Some e-waste recycling facilities offer hard drive destruction programs for a reasonable fee. This way you can rest assured that company information is cleared 100%. You might also consider having your IT staff use a hard drive wiping program before sending computers off.

If you want to be sure that you send your computers to a facility that follows proper recycling practices that follow regulations set by the EPA, then choose a facility that is compliant with EPA disposal standards.

If your computers are less than 5 years old, consider donating them to an organization in need. For instance, Recycle San Diego works with organizations that are in need of working computers and will happily accept your donation. With such a significant donation, you may be eligible for federal tax credits. Even more importantly, you will avoid sending your old computers to a landfill and will be helping other individuals to extend the life of your computers.
