I have had all these bottle caps laying around and yesterday day it dawned on me to try them out as ponytail holders. I had been looking at the cute vintage button bobby pins that have been covered with fabric and I looked at the bottle caps and wondered if I could do the same thing and well the answer is YES! And I hope you try this one, they would be great for stocking stuffers. I know its a bit early but with school starting today, it always gets me thinking about Christmas gifts.

Materials Needed:

Button

Bottle Cap

Scrap Fabric

Ponytail Holder

Hot Glue Gun & Glue

1. Cut out a piece of fabric about an inch outside the bottle cap. Sew around the circle with the longest stitch your machine has or by hand and gather as you go.

2.Stick the bottle cap inside. It should look like this.

3.Hot glue the gathered section down into the bottle cap. Put more glue in the bottle cap and secure the ponytail holder in place until its dry, making sure to cover completely with glue.

4.You have the option here to cover your button with fabric or not. Next put more glue on top of the ponytail holder and secure with your covered or plain button.

You can use any fabric, but if you use see-thru material, make sure you use plain(no logos) bottle caps, or else the logos will show through.

I was at SCRAP again, looking for school supplies for my girls, but of course I had to check out their selection of fabric. I was shocked to find an umbrella top rolled up in the pile and thought I must take it and see what I can do. Well I seem to have this flower fetish because I’m constantly making flowers, and yes I used two sections of the umbrella for flowers.

I cut on the seams and that made the flowers stiff and made their shape a bit different than other fabric.

A word of advice that you may already know but just in case – don’t iron them, they will melt.

Here is my finished hair clip accented with feathers.

So if you have an old umbrella laying around that’s broken and cannot be fixed, don’t toss it, take the top off and think of ways you can re-use it.

I got my daughter off to college, wow was that hard but I’m still alive and I am pretty sure I will make it. It’s just another adjustment that a parent has to go through. I just wish I had known it was going to be so hard, no one told me. Well I started working this necklace last week but with our time getting our daughter settled at school, I didn’t get it finished until today.

This is a pretty easy project and one that I am going to duplicate for gifts this year.I love how it turned out!

Materials needed:

- Old beads, plastic beads, whatever ugly beads you have lying around. Please don’t use nice beads, save those for another project.

- 2″ thick by 78″ long(or longer) of fabric of your choice

- Sewing machine

- Enough matching fabric for fifty 2″ circles

I used these pink beads that the color had worn off on most of them.

Fold your 78″ long fabric in half length wise, wrong sides together and sew the length of it. When finished, turn the strip right side out.

Cut the beads apart or un-string them.

Start by tying a knot in the material, then put a bead in the strip and tie another knot, put another bead and tie another knot, continue until the necklace is the length you want and has enough fabric left over to tie a bow.

For the ends, iron them flat and then fold in and sew straight across.

Cut out 50 circles from the matching fabric.

Take a circle and fold it in half and in half again or just pinch it in the middle(your choice) and sew it onto the necklace. Continue sewing circles onto the necklace until your satisfied with the length and fullness. Always keep the circles on the front and sides so that the necklace lays flat.

I know we still have a bit of summer left and believe me I am enjoying it but fall is coming up quickly and its so fun to be back into sewing and creating. Here are a few of my creations.

I will be putting together that Anthropologie Necklace I talked about a couple of weeks ago so check back for the tutorial.

The hubb’s family reunion was in Los Angeles, Ca this year so the girls left on Saturday with the Grandparents and we left on Wednesday to meet them. They took a few days to get there and we took the car by its horns and did the quick day trip, 14 hours to be exact! Yes we drive a little fast when we get to Cali due to the 70 speed limit and the super straight roads.

We were able to go to Disneyland/Cal Adventure for the day on Thursday (and yes it really is the happiest place on earth, at least for me), we got to lounge by the pool(much needed rest) and we enjoyed some Mexican food at Mijares in Pasadena. I had some amazing flan and my hubby had some not-so-vegetarian-Menudo. YIKES!

Of course we got to spend time with my the hubb’s family and we enjoyed lots of stories which filled his aunts porch with uproarious laughter. We all had a great time. Our trip home was super quick, much like on the way down, but this time with the whole family. We made some great memories and now we are onto getting my oldest ready for college. This summer just seemed to fly by. Not to mention that my daughter who was just 5 yrs old yesterday is now 18 and leaving the house. How does that even happen?

Well here are the only two photos we took, it’s so sad….but I kept forgetting to bring my camera or I didn’t want to lug it around, those dang cameras are so big and I lost my battery charger for my tiny camera.

A couple weeks ago Evan, better known as “the nerd” from A Nerd Like Me, challenged me to make her a padded laptop case for her mini Netbook. I wasn’t sure I was up for the challenge but decided to give it a try. I don’t have any instructions because I really didn’t know how I was going to make at any step of the way. Evan asked me if I could make it with straps and pockets so at each step of the way and with every needle I broke(5 in all), I found myself wondering if it would ever be completely done. And alas it is finished.

The best part about this project is that it is of course 100% recycled!

Sewing something padded and so thick is a bit hard on the poor little needles. This is where a question for all you knowledgeable sewers comes in – Is there a special needle I need to use when sewing multiple layers? Please help me with this.

As you are all seeing this post I will be living it up in California! Hopefully in Disneyland because I could us a little of that happiness that seems to permeate through that place.

Hope you like it Evan – you should receive it today!

Last week I visited Sunriver with my daughters. It was a nice get away, thank goodness for great friends who let us use their Sunriver home for free.

One of the days we were there we drove into Bend to look around and we found two great resale shops. One was Kaleidoscope, a resale shop with a large variety of nice clothes and a great collection of crafts from local artists.

Another shop we found was Cowgirl Cash, which is a shop full of vintage and pre-enjoyed cowboy boots. If you love cowboy boots, this is the place to check out. When we walked up they had two little baskets outside the door with items that had been marked down to $10.

I found this cute little dress, complete with pockets and sweet flower detail.

So the next time you are in central Oregon, check out the resale shops in Bend. You are sure to find something you love.

I don’t have all the fancy stuff most people have to make and can applesauce so I found instructions on The Whole Life Nutrition Kitchen on how to make and can applesauce with what you have in your kitchen and it worked like a charm.

You will need apples, lots and lots of apples, cause a lot of apples don’t go very far. My friend has a few apple trees and she was kind enough to let me come and pick some… I think she had more than enough, so I may need to get more and make some more applesauce.

For the full instructions click here.

The instructions were super easy to follow. The most time consuming thing was peeling and coring the apples. I do not have a apple slicer, peeler, corer. I added sugar and cinnamon to my apples because they were a bit tart. Let your taste buds be the guide, you can add some at the beginning and after an hour or so taste them and see if you need more. I also left the chunks in the apples, whatever didn’t turn to mush I just left as it was.
