The Year of the Snake is ahead of us in 2025, and this brings with it a renewed sense of hope and excitement. Someone once said that “enthusiasm is underrated.” Whoever it was said that because they were a mope.

From my perspective, there is only life when there is enthusiasm – the spark of joy.

Life without it is a bland, beige, world and who wants to live there?

The spark of life will re-enter the year ahead and it’s a refreshing change.

The yin wood snake is a softer wood energy but bursting with anticipation, like the small child balling up their fists in excitement over an ice cream cone. It’s excitement wrapped in a cashmere sweater of sweetness.

The yin wood brings the kind of energy that belongs to the tender sweet pea vines with their delicate tendrils, and green, fragrant grass versus the giant sequoia and tall trees that the yang wood dragon of 2024 represented.

This yin wood energy will help soothe the strength and boldness of yang wood (and the anger that goes with it) to an energy that is smoother, holds more temperance and is more diplomatic.

Ah, and then there is the little flame that comes with the snake’s inherent fire energy.

This is not like the giant fires that scorch the earth, but the sweet candle in the window on a fall evening that fills the room with a golden glow and cozy warmth.

The snake year brings contentment and pleasure and tempered excitement that bursts with quiet joy.

The mountain comes into view

There is another energy that also comes with this year. It is the energy of support, companionship, and of source.

This is the energy of the mountain.

The mountain is venerated by the Chinese as it has a connection to both heaven and earth. It is often a home to dragons and is a source of support.

The mountain is represented by the number 2, the number associated with the southwest and the woman, matriarch, and mother. This is the reigning star of 2025.

Who hasn’t heard a woman being called “a rock”, meaning that she is a pillar of strength and support? This kind of support will be here for all in the household.

This year, the reigning star is the 2 star as it flies to the center, a place where it, and the other earth stars are at home in their respective earth locations.

Before we look at the 2 star energy, let’s talk about the mountain.

The mountain paradox.

The mountain is the beautiful earth that rises from the flatland and lifts your gaze. It brings the waters that flow from its melting snow caps and refreshes you in its sparkling rivers.

The mountain stores wealth and abundance, gems and precious metals. The year will be comprised of two types of mountains.

You must choose which mountain you wish to have in the year ahead. And yes, you can select the experience you want and choose consciously and move your personal energy and the energy in your home to the abundant mountain.

Or, the mountain can be what you resist. It can become your greatest obstacle or your biggest fear.

This year the corners with the best luck and energies include the southeast, south, southwest, east, and west. They have the most auspicious energies so if your bedroom or front door are located here, you are favored with good fortune.

The difficult luck corners in 2025

In 2025, the corners with the most difficult luck are the north corners of northeast, north, northwest, and center sectors. If you have a bedroom or front door located here, pay close attention and be sure to place your remedies.

AREAS OF CONCERN & AFFLICTION STARS

The 2 illness Star

The 2 is a star long associated with Illness and it falls in the center sector this year. In fact, the 2 is the reigning star — the star of women. I expect to see more women and women’s issues take on more importance as the year goes on.

Illness, such as e-coli and other food-borne illnesses may be more prevalent in the year ahead. There will also be more prevalence on gut-health and medicines that target the gut like weight loss medications Wegovy and Mounjaro. Do watch your family’s health this year as all could be more prone to problems with respiratory illnesses and disease.

The pandemic and the rise of new viruses have shown us that our health and the risk of infection continue to climb.

Recently, there is more news about monkeypox. We are only three years away from the Year of the Monkey. I wonder if we will see a growth in its fellow virus now referred to as Mpox.

Like every year it’s wise to be cautious and to pay close attention to the corners where there is potential for infection, but this year brings us up another DEFCON level, so to speak.

In 2025, infection potential rests in the center (2 Black), northeast (5 Yellow), and north (7 Red). 

After illness, comes the argument star….

The 3 Jade Argument Star flies to the Northwest helpful people corner

This moves to the northwest this year. If this is your front door, be sure to keep the porch and foyer lights lit as often as possible to help lift the anger energy of the 3 Jade.

Because the element associated with the northwest is big metal, and the element of the 3 Jade star is big wood, it’s possible that when quarrels ensue, they could become insurmountable. Watch that you don’t directly confront superiors or become embroiled in power struggles.

The northwest is also the “international” sector, and with the 3 star moving here, tensions could rise internationally. At home, keep this corner quiet and well-lit. Dog and pig zodiac signs should be the most watchful for legal problems and a tendency toward anger, and even, depression.

The 5 Yellow Calamity Star flies to the Northeast sector

Of all the stars, it’s the 5 Yellow that creates the most worry and upset. The 5 Yellow is an earth element star that’s most at home in the center of your home or business, an earth sector.  This year the 5 flies into another small earth sector: the northeast.

Its nickname, the bone breaker, gives you a clue to how difficult it can be.

This year, the 5 Yellow star is strengthened by its placement in the northeast corner, the home of a fellow small earth star, the 8 star.

The placement in the northeast means it can affect sons the most this year, and the signs of ox and tiger.

The 5 Yellow is ruled by the planet Mars, planet of war and action.

It will pay to watch the health of all the members of the family, especially young boys. Because the 5 Yellow strikes the northeast, there could be concerns around children or family members becoming sick or from injuries like a broken wrist, arm, or other limb.

The 7 Red Violence Star flies to the North sector of income and career

If this is your front door, be careful with any electronics, take care while driving, and do your best to hold your tongue (especially around touchy family situations).

If this is a prominent sector in your home, make sure you keep safety up around your home and in your online accounts.

Identify theft and bank fraud can occur with this devilish star. Stay vigilant.

The 7 star relates to the lungs, the north sector to the ears, and both of these areas could be affected with things like sinus infections, earaches, flu, COVID, or other respiratory infections. If this is your bedroom or front door, be extra cautious with your health and your finances.

GOOD FORTUNE SECTORS & GOOD FORTUNE STARS

The stars the represent the best of feng shui and the white and purple stars. These include the 1, 4, 6, 8, and now the 9 star. The stars bring all benefits and good fortune to our homes and lives.

Period 8 was marked by young men

The Period 8 cycle was ruled by the earth element of the northeast and the thinking mind and intelligence. This is a corner that relates to young men. Think of all the young men, like Mark Zuckerberg, who rose in prominence and influence during Period 8 as technology titans that began in 2004 and ended with the Year of the Dragon. More and more young men became millionaires and billionaires during this age.

The mental work of the Period 8 cycle has now been replaced by artificial intelligence, or AI. In 2024 through 2044, we will see the mind being taken over by computer processes that we can’t even imagine now. There will be problems, but there will also be amazing advances.

Here in Period 9, we will be watching reputation and social standing more closely. Is the Presidential address real? Is the declaration of war an AI deep fake? We will have to decide what is real and who we trust more closely than ever.

In the Year of the Dragon, the new shift began toward the feminine. We are seeing social changes that will continue and that will help propel a new age forward away from young men and tilt toward….the age of woman.

Period 9 is ruled by the fire element and the middle age of women.

This is the child-bearing woman, the young mother, who contains within her the ability to produce children, create change, and maybe even peace will be our new guiding light in the coming 20 years.

As the period related to the south, social causes will rise in prominence as we begin to consider that the world is only made up of us, not them. The collective will matter. New women leaders will emerge and new female entrepreneurs will eclipse the younger men as the harbingers of change and influence.

20 year cycles

In feng shui there are 20-year cycles of time and we have just concluded the Period 8 that ran from 2004-2024. This new Period 9 will last for another 20 years, from 2024 to 2044, and then it will be Period 1 from 2044 to 2064.

Good Stars vs. Bad Stars and the Fuss about Period 9

There is a lot of confusion about the changing of the Periods…will my house be okay? Do I need to change my house? What does Period 9 mean for me?

Let’s start with a review of the most well known energies, or, stars….

Generally, the 1, 6, and 8 stars are always considered to be auspicious and the 2, 3, 7 are considered less fortunate.

The 5 Yellow is always considered malevolent. The 4 star is regarded as unfavorable yet it has benefits, such as scholarly and romantic luck, and can be regarded differently according to the person it influences and location where it flies each year.

The 9 star is a mutable star, making good fortune better and making difficult luck more problematic.

Enter Period 9

During this time until 2044, the number 9 will be more favorable and the 8 will be less so, though the 8 is always regarded as a favorable star that portends wealth, no matter what the Period is.

The 8 star of the northeast is also the benevolent sibling to the 9 Purple Star that represents the south and the direction of the direct spirit of energy. The 1 star, and north direction, will now become the “future prosperity” star and is also the source of the “indirect spirit”.

Annual stars and their inherent energies

Annual stars are generally considered apart from period stars and flying stars, yet there still may be general characteristics that influence them both.

For example, in Period 7 (1984-2004), the double 7 flying stars known as mountain and water stars were considered lucky. However, the 7 annual star was still regarded as unfavorable so wherever it flew from year to year, it brought the afflictions of the 7 star like betrayal and theft.

It can get confusing….

What does this all mean?

It means that when “bad” stars are in their periods, they are less problematic. However, overall, I would say that annual stars are apart from the period stars and that they retain and follow their inherent natures, whether positive or negative.

So, even though the 2 star may be growing more beneficial as we move toward Period 1 and then Period 2, it will still be considered an intrinsically negative influence until then.

Even when we reach Period 2 and have a water star 2 and a mountain star 2, the annual 2 will still be deemed unlucky.

For that reason, you can still expect the 5 Yellow to exert the same negative energies in Period 9 that it had in Period 8, and maybe more so, and that all the stars you have known for their annual qualities will essentially remain the same into the next Period 9.

Lucky Directions

With the change from period 8 in which northeast-southwest axis houses were considered the most favorable, in Period 9, the south-north axis houses will have the most favorable directions and energies. If these are positive directions of your kua numbers, select a north-south house if you are an east kua number of 1, 3, 4, or 9.

Do you need to do anything to your house to change it to become a Period 9 house?

Many times, the answer is no. There’s nothing you really need to do about this change because through the course of living in a home and updating it as we often do – replacing carpets, tile floors, roofs, or even redecorating – these activities will often be enough change your home over to a Period 9.

There are some feng shui experts who say you must make significant changes to the flooring, roof, and front door in order to change your house over to the current period. But there’s an easier way.

My feng shui masters contend that simply moving to another house, making decorating changes, and the act of renovating your house over time is often enough to move it over to the current period. But, if you’d like to move the process ahead and make it move faster, consider making a change to the floor in your home, such as installing new tile or carpet in a living room, replace or repaint your front door, and replace a few roof tiles or shingles with new ones.

Moving ahead

Although you don’t have to make changes to your home, it’s a good idea to keep the energies of your home fresh, current, and revitalized. For that reason alone, it is a good idea to make some plans to help move your home forward and into the new Period 9.

Chances are, you may already have projects around your house ongoing, and often this is enough to help move your house over to the new period. If not, think of giving your front door a new coat of paint or changing the hardware and look around to see if there are any rooms that could use some freshening up with new paint or wallpaper.

The Year of the Dragon ushers in a brand-new set of energies not just for the year but for the next two decades. With the changing of the calendar, we have now entered a new period that will last for the next twenty years. As you can see, it’s pretty significant.

For now, though, I want you to know what to expect in the year ahead.

This is the Year of the Dragon
The last time we had a Wood Dragon year was in 1964. The wood energy of the dragon flying into the center sector means we could see more tumult that ranges from wars and fighting to earthquakes.

The dragon promotes health, growth and vigorous energy.

Dragons are the favored animals in feng shui and in Asia. The dragon represents the pinnacle of good fortune, power, and health.

Having an image of a dragon in the east corner of your home, living room, and garden are excellent ways to foster growth and energy in your home and life this year.

Do make sure that dragons are not placed in a bedroom because they’re too energetic and may keep you from sleeping well and they should never be placed in a bathroom.

This year dragons are most auspicious in the east sector and bring prestige and energy that is fortunate and favored for growth, opportunity, and to benefit the family, and more specifically, the oldest son.

The oldest son advances

The oldest son is representative of the 3 star, the reigning star of 2024, and with its prominence in the center sector, the son will see new activities and more growth this year.

If your oldest son is a teen or toddler, the 3 star could promote extra energy that makes him more irascible. Just keep your calm and put your remedies in place.

Indeed, many families will see growth, especially if they can foster harmony and good relations, and put the appropriate remedies for the 3 star to work. This may be tricky because the 3 star is often seen as the argument and legal star. Fortunately, it only takes red color to help hold down the 3’s energy.

This year, it’s possible more families may undergo difficulties or have legal disputes within the family.

This can happen through inheritance, divorce, restraining orders, child support and custody issues. Paying close to the remedies and not inviting trouble will help you manage the year ahead and build on the opportunity to grow with the 3 star.

The 9 star is the new water and mountain star and star of prosperity once we move past the annual feng shui date of February 4, 2024.

After this, the 9 takes on new meaning in house charts and annual flying stars, but most especially in the natal home flying star charts. This is when this star becomes the most fortunate of them all, especially when they are together as the mountain and water star.

The difficult luck corners in 2024
In 2024, the corners with the most difficulty luck are the southeast, center, south, and west. With the 5 Yellow moving to the west corner of children, pay close attention to this affliction if you have children in the house or breathing difficulties. The west is the direction of the lungs so there could be problems with respiratory infections, flu, COVID, RSV, etc.

It’s especially helpful if these corners correspond to corners that are frequently used, such as the front door, bedroom, home office, or living room. Even having a window in these corners is beneficial as you can open it and let the wealth and fortune chi into the house.

This is the year when the waiting ends

The year comes in like a dragon — full of growth and opportunity. And, like a dragon, there is some bluster and big energy, just like you would expect from a dragon.

If you’ve felt like you’re head has been underwater and that you have been stuck and stagnant, the dragon is going to help you blast out of that rut with some real energy and enthusiasm.

After the past few years that have been marked by upheaval and uncertainties, the energy coming to 2023 will be replaced by a new light, hopeful, and sweeter energy.

The Year of the Tiger was the first to bring in springtime energy as it is the first of the 3 spring zodiac animals of tiger, rabbit, and dragon. The rabbit represents the fullness of spring when nature is flowering, and green growth appears.

The energy of the rabbit will offer us a respite from the cold austere energies of the past few years that were aligned with the metal element and winter-time animals of the pig, rat, and ox.

What’s more, the reigning star of the year that accompanies the rabbit is the 4 Star of love. And what animal goes as well with this kind of petal soft energy as a fluffy bunny?

2023: The Last Year in the Period of 8

The Period of 8 is a 20-year cycle that began in February 2004 and ends on February 3, 2024. This was a period of “young men,” where the likes of internet giants like Mark Zuckerburg popped up like flowers in a spring rain.

As we go through 2023, we will finalize a 20 year cycle that will change next year to Period 9.

In Period 9, the new energy will be feminine. The 9 star rules fire and the middle daughter, so we will see women surge ahead in position and power. This will occur next February 4, 2024. It will be an exciting time!

Let’s talk now about the year’s energies….

Read each of the energies to determine how they might affect you and your family. Pay close attention to the energies that are at your front door, bedroom, or home office.

It is also wise to look at who occupies the sectors where afflictions fall. If you have old, sick, very young, or pregnant family members in these corners, it might be wise to move them to another bedroom if possible.

As always it’s best to be prepared for the difficulties. Once that’s done, you can look forward to a year of opportunity and adventure, love and contentment, pleasure and joy.

The 5 Yellow “Bone Breaker” Star flies to the Northwest Breadwinner Sector

This star is the most unfortunate of all the stars. The 5 Yellow Star brings misfortune, misunderstandings, bad luck, accidents, and financial problems.  This is especially true if you sleep, work in this sector or if your front door is in the afflicted sector.  Do take extra care if any of this is true for you.

This is the sector of the breadwinner or the man of the family, and it is he who will be most affected. It will also affect the dog and pig zodiac signs. It will be wise to be cautious this year with health, expenses, and investments. Older men will want to be particularly careful with health particularly with blood pressure, stroke, and heart ailments. It would be wise to put remedies in place.

2 Black Illness Star Flies to East Health, Oldest Son and Family Sector

In 2023, the 2 star flies to the east, the sector of family, growth, and the oldest son. However, all afflictions can affect anyone in the family, including your pets. This year, the 2 Black Illness star is in a fighting position in the east.

This is the meeting of two giants: the big earth of the 2 star and the big wood of the 3 star. You could say it is a clash of the titans. When the 2 and 3 meet up, they form what is called “bullfighting” energy. This can mean that families will face legal complications or argue.

It can also create stomach problems in the household in addition to bringing health challenges to the oldest son. It may also mean that once someone gets sick in a family…everyone in the family gets sick. Keep a close watch on preventing the spread of illness.

This sector relates to the feet and lower legs. Be careful with activities as this could create a twisted ankle, broken foot, or injuries to the feet. Earth-related illnesses will be more common and could show up as stomach issues, problems with the gall bladder, ulcers, and colitis.

If you have any underlying health concerns, they could blossom this year with the influence of the 2 star. Like the 1 star, the 2 star is also ruled by Jupiter, only it expands the difficulties of the 2 star rather than create benefits as it does for the 1 star.

3 Jade Star Flies to the Southeast Wealth and Oldest Daughter Sector

The 3 argument star moves to the sector of the oldest daughter and of investments and assets. This star is also known to stir up legal problems, gossip, arguing and bickering. It is especially hard on couples and creates that weary emotional fatigue that can sometimes end relationships — or bring in a third party.

The bigger concern?

Emotional and nervous upsets so straining that there could be divorce, major depression, or nervous breakdown. Watch for problems with legal matters, wrangling over money, anger from the oldest daughter, or for emotional problems if this is your front door, bedroom, or home office location.

The 7 Red Violence Star

In 2023 the 7 red star moves from the west and heads to the northeast corner. Because this is the sector that rules wisdom, there could be difficulties with thinking clearly, injuries to the hand, and school bullying.

The 7 star affects the ox and tiger zodiac signs most this year, so this year these signs will need to be especially careful with what they say, their relationships, the tendency toward infection, accident, and theft.

This star is ruled by the planet Venus. With the 7 star being an afflicted star, it will represent the negative qualities of Venus. Because Venus rules attractiveness and relationships, the negatives expressed would be problematic relationships, arguments, and narcissism.

Wherever the 7 star falls the tendency to cut off and loss follows. This can be cutting relationships off, lopping off jobs, or losing members of our families.

More than relationship problems and difficulties, this star can cause a host of problems from robbery, accidents, arguments, slander, gossip, injury, and illness of the lungs.

The most grave concern is the potential for injury of children in educational settings. Pay close attention to your child’s school setting and their protection. Another worry is having a pregnant woman in this corner as the 7 star could create worries with bleeding or loss of a pregnancy.

The 3 Killings Direction

This affliction moves each year to a new cardinal direction, and this year it flies to the west. The 3 Killings can affect the ability to concentrate, communicate, and create harsh words between people. Lawsuits, slander, and libel are also a potential under the 3 Killings influence and create three kinds of loss, such as loss of reputation, loss of a loved one, or loss of money.

The 3 Killings take up 90 degrees on the compass. If you sit within those 90 degrees with your back to the direction of the 3 Killings, you’re exposing yourself to its harmful influence. Make certain that you avoid sitting with your back to the 3 Killings. This year that means you should FACE WEST.

Keep all these afflicted sectors in mind when you are assessing the feng shui of your home for the year.

The art of handwriting analysis, graphology, is much like feng shui.

Graphology is undertaken seriously by those who practice it, and those who don’t, often treat it esoterically. But, look at some interesting facts about handwriting analysis, or graphology.  The CIA, FBI and many police departments in the US look at handwriting to understand the minds of those they’re investigating.

How does graphology relate to feng shui? In feng shui, the mind and thinking are related to the hand, so by extension, the style of writing someone has provides some insight into that person’s personality and can influence their lives. In my own feng shui training, my teachers encouraged students to look at our signatures to make sure they looked successful and prosperous, with an emphasis of writing that had bold strokes that tilted up and to the right.
